RainGear Windshield Wiper Install
Many times when you are restoring a
classic Chevy you will find that the original
wiper system doesn’t function properly or
is missing altogether. Instead of trying
to find NOS or remanufactured wiper
transmissions, or replacement cables to
rebuild your originals, why not upgrade
to a modern style wiper system that uses
solid shafts and never requires adjustment?
Follow along as we install one of the
RainGear systems in our 1956 test car
(1955 installations are identical, 1957
installations are very similar). It’s really
not that hard and you will love the results.
Danchuk Parts you will need…
• #12825 RainGear Wiper System
with Intermittent Switch
• #12828 RainGear Universal Washer Kit
• #913 Wiper Switch Tool
• #912 Wiper Escutcheon Nut Tool
(included in kit)
Tools you will need…
• 3/16" and 1/4" Clutch Head Screwdrivers
or Drivers
• Phillips and Flat Blade Screwdrivers
• 7/8"-1/2" Drive Socket
• 1/2" and 9/16"-3/8" Drive Deep Sockets
• 3/4"-3/8" Drive Deep Socket or
Box-End Wrench
• 5/16" Nut Driver or Open-End Wrench
• 1/4" Open-End Wrench
• 3/8" Open-End or Box-End Wrench
• Crescent Wrench
• Plastic or Wood Mallet
• Steering Wheel Puller
• 3/8" Drill
• 9/32" Drill Bit
IN THIS ISSUE:
Before you start, go to the Danchuk website
and download the RainGear instruction
sheet. You will find it posted under part
#12825. It will be easier to follow the article
if you have the instructions handy. Also,
you may find it easier to do this install if
you remove the steering wheel from your
vehicle, just to get it out of the way.
1.) Disconnect your battery.
2.) Remove the
glove box insert
and radio. We
also removed
the glove box
door using
our Phillips
screwdriver and the ashtray for better
access. Pic 1
3.) Remove the
Phillips screws
that hold the
instrument
cluster in place
and at least pull
it away from the
dash far enough to get in behind it. (We
removed ours to make it easier to install
the drivers side wiper drive unit.) Once
it is loose, reach in and unclip the wiring
harness. Clear the wiring away making
room for the new wiper unit. Pic 2
Note: You may find it easier to loosen
the column and pull it down a bit to gain
access to the lower 2 Philips screws on the
cluster. To do this, remove the lower column
cover with your 3/16" clutch head driver.

bolts with your
1/2" deep socket
a n d 3 / 8 " - d r i ve

the column down
enough to gain
easier access to
the lower cluster
screws.

9/6" socket and
3/8"-drive ratchet.
The rod will not be
reinstalled. If you
have a manual
transmission
remove the clutch
pedal return spring for better access. (We
installed a 3/8"-16" X 3/4" bolt in the lower
rod hole in the dash so the column would
remain supported.) Pics 8-9
4.) Remove the
wiper control knob
and cable from the
dash with your
wiper switch tool.
Save the knob and
wiper bezel for
use with the new
electric switch.
Pic 5A
Now we will begin to install the RainGear
system.
5.) Remove the
wiper arms and
blades and set
aside. A flat blade
screwdriver may
be needed to help
unclasp the tabs.
Pic 6
6.) Dismantle the
original wiper
system. Star t
by removing the
wiper escutcheon
nuts with the
supplied wiper
escutcheon nut
tool. Remove
the
wiper
escutcheons.
Remove the
original pivot shafts. Remove the wiper
motor and center drive unit from the firewall.

8.) On the drivers
side wiper drive
assembly there
is a “locator tab”
that will need to be
bent to line up with
the body. Bend it
forward about 30 degrees or enough to have
as little gap as possible. (Refer to figure 2 in
the instructions.) This tab mounts where the
support rod we removed bolted to the firewall.
Pic 10
9.) Plug the wire
harness to the
wiper motor drive
assembly. Pic 11
10.) Raise the wiper drive assembly up under
the dash to the left of the steering column and
guide the pivot shaft through the wiper hole
in the cowl. It helps to clear the wires out of
the way with one hand and move the drive
assembly into place with the other.

washer, aluminum
spacer and nut
on to the pivot
shaft. With your

tighten the nut up
snug…not tight.

secure the wiper
drive assembly to
the firewall with the
supplied 5/16"-18"
x 1/2" bolt. The
assembly bolts
into the hole where
we removed the
dash support rod.
If there is a gap
between the locator tab and the firewall
remove the unit and bend the tab a little
farther. Pic 15
13.) Assemble the
t wo link halves
to g e t h e r u s i n g
the longer of the
two sets of holes.
Secure them
together with the
supplied hardware
with your 5/16" nut
driver and 3/8"
wrench.
Pics 16-17
14.) Install the
molded plastic
bushings into the
link ends. Install
the one with the
flanged end first
with the flanged
end towards the
pivot shaft. They
will be very tight
and you may
need to use your
plastic mallet, do
not smash them.
Install the outer
plastic ring next
to complete the
assembly. If you
need to use your
mallet be gentle.
Pics 18-19-20
15.) Assemble the
extended end of
the long link to the
pivot fitting on the
passenger side
pivot shaft. Make
s u r e i t m o ve s
freely on the
shaft. Install the
supplied washer
and then secure
the link to the shaft
with the supplied
J-clip. Use your 1/4" open-end wrench to
push down on the clip and work it into place.
Refer to the wiper instructions figures 5 and
6 for more information. Pics 21-22
16.) Place the left
end link close to
point “D” on the
drivers side wiper
drive unit and pass
the passenger
side pivot shaft
thru the cowl. Refer to figures 3 and 5 in the
instruction sheet. Install the rubber washer,
aluminum spacer and nut on the passenger
side pivot shaft like you did in Step 11. Pic 23
17.) Attach the long
link to the driver
side wiper drive
at point “D” and
attach it as you
did the passenger
side in Step 15.
Refer to figure 3
in the instruction
sheet. Pics 24-25
Note: It is very
impor tant that
the lever on the
passenger side
pivot shaft ends
up in the 10 o’clock to 2 o’clock position.
Refer to figure 5 in the instruction sheet. If
the lever ends up in the 6 o’clock position
the wipers will run backwards and you will
remove the paint from your hood. Ours
ended up at 10 o’clock.
18.) Secure the gauge cluster wires and any
other under dash wiring well out of the way
of the moving parts we just installed with
tie straps.
Now it is time to install and wire the intermittent
wiper switch. The intermittent switch MUST
have the black wire grounded and it will not
function if the car body is not grounded.
You CANNOT use a battery charger to test
the system.
19.) Install the
new wiper switch
in the original
location using
your original bezel
and knob. (If your
car was originally
equipped with a
washer system
you can retain the
original washer
button with just
a l i tt l e b i t o f
additional work.
Just cut the rod
off the push button
and slide the push
button back into
the knob.) Thread
the jam nut onto
the switch shaft
approximately
7/16" from the
bottom. Install the
star washer with
the teeth pointing
towards the back
of the dash. Slide
the switch in from
the back of the
dash, thread the
wiper nut onto the
shaft and tighten
with your wiper
switch tool. Push
the knob on the switch and stand the knob
off enough to allow movement for the washer
function. Tighten the knob with a small flat
blade screwdriver. Pics 26-27-28-29-30
the kit. (If you are installing a washer system
you can wire the washer at this time as
outlined in the wiring diagram, we did not.)
Route the wiring harness using the supplied
clamps and attach to the hole in the lower
portion of the drive assembly. Refer to figure
3 of the wiper instruction sheet. Make sure
all wires are clear of the moving parts under
the dash.
If you are installing the washer kit proceed to
step 26. If not proceed to step 21.
2 1. ) I n s t a l l
the wiper
escutcheons
and nuts in the
reverse order
of removal and
install the nuts with your wiper escutcheon
nut tool. Pic 30A
22.) Test the electrical operation. DO NOT
install the wiper arms and blades yet, we
need to confirm and possibly adjust the park
position for the system.
2 3 . ) Tu r n t h e
m o to r o n , a n d
then off to park
the motor. Using
masking tape or
wire ties make a
“Flag” on the pivot
shafts in the approximate wiper position so
you can see the operation of the system.
Pic 31
Every attempt has been made to adjust the
drive arm on the motor so the unit will park
correctly at the end of the stroke. If the wipers
park early or late then adjustment will be
necessary. Our kit required no adjustment.
Refer to figure 3 in the instruction sheet
to see the proper “Park” alignment. If
adjustment is necessary adjust as outlined
in the instruction sheet.
24.) Put the dashboard back together. You
may need to leave the rear support off of your
original radio to clear the long link.
20.) Ground the black wire from the switch to
a good body ground. Connect the RED wire
to a 5 amp fused power source controlled by
the ignition switch. Wire the rest of the switch
according to the wiring diagram supplied in

RADIATOR SPECIALS
Aluminum Downflow radiators feature fully welded construction (no epoxy) and dual 1" tubes. Radiators are available
in either a standard or Tripleflow configuration. Tripleflow
radiators achieve the maximum temperature drop by creating walls which force the coolant
to pass through the core 3 times resulting in greater temperature reductions. Aluminum
radiators do not have transmission coolers. An auxiliary cooler will be required so be sure
to check out our transmission coolers on page 346-347 of our catalog. When mounting
#13274 the hood baffle may require modification on 55-56 application. All triple flow radiator upper inlets are on driver side of top tank. Radiators fit both standard and automatic
transmission equipped cars, and don’t forget to order a fan shroud, parts #16625-16627C

STREET RODDER TOUR
Over Labor Day Weekend last year the
Amsoil/Street Rodder Road Tour came
to Indianapolis. Invited to participate by
the NHRA they camped out all weekend
at the US Nationals and on Tuesday
morning headed out towards their
destination, Shades of the Past in Pigeon
Forge, TN. Since Indianapolis Raceway
Park, home to the US Nationals, is
barely a 5-minute drive from Danchuk
in Brownsburg we thought it would be
cool to invite them over for a little lunch
and a look around the new Danchuk
Indiana digs.
Our thanks to Jerry Dixie and Ed Zinke,
as well as the Danchuk customers and
Shades of the Past Tour participants,
who came by to enjoy the afternoon. You
guys were great and we had a Blast!!
Check it out!!!

A Trade Turns into . . .
Danchuk customer turns his passion
for classics into a business with this
Award Winning 2-Door 55
Tony Wood, owner of Tony’s Hotrod
Shop in Meridian, Mississippi, had always
wanted a ’55 Chevy. One afternoon, in
2004, a friend told him about a ’55 he had
seen sitting in a barn. Tony went to look
at it and got to talking with the owner. He
had a ’48 Olds 2-door Coupe, the Wood
family hot rod, that he rebuilt when he was
in high school, but he had lost interest in
it. He liked the ’55 and proposed to the
owner a body for body trade. The ’48 for
the ’55. The owner accepted and Tony
became the proud third owner of a 1955
210 2-door sedan.
Originally, Tony was going to build a nice
driver. But when Tony started thinking
about opening a business of his own he,
along with his wife Felicia, felt they needed
something more. Something to park
outside his new shop to show off his talents.
They needed an award winning show car.
Two years later, that was exactly what Tony
and Felicia would have.
In 2008, the car was disassembled and a
14
rotisserie restoration was begun. Every nut,
every bolt, everything would be reworked
or replaced. That’s how these projects go
and, of course, Tony would do practically
everything. After all, you can’t have a car
that showcases your talents and sub it all
out to someone else to build, can you?
Tony started with the frame, which was
blasted and painted with PPG Jet Black
base and clear. A custom transmission
cross member was added to support the
TH-700-R4 he would install and custom
motor mounts were added for the 468 big
block he was planning to build. Tony wanted
the car to handle as well as look good, so
he went to the experts for his suspension.
Heidt’s polished stainless tubular upper
and lower a-arms were installed along
with their 2” drop spindles in the front. In
the rear, an Art Morrison triangulated 4-bar
setup was installed with “custom for the
application” coil-over shocks. Sway bars
were added front and rear along with a
complete Baer disc brake system, “Track”
in the front with 13” rotors and dual piston
(800) 648-4728 • www.danchuk.com
Meridian, Mississippi
calipers and “Touring “ with 11” rotors in the
rear. Instead of a 9”, which is usually the
case with a Morrison set up, Tony went with
the rear end out of an ’89 Firebird which he
narrowed 4” and stuffed with Moser axles
and 3.27 gears. A 605 box rounds out the
modifications on the frame to assure the
’55 would steer as well as it handled. For
wheels and tires Tony chose “Chicaynes” by
Billet Specialties, 17x8 up front and 17x9.5
in the rear shod with Kumho 215/45R17’s
and 275/40R17’s respectively.
Any great show car needs lots of go
power and the 468 Tony planned would
not disappoint. Tony built it with all the
right parts, Keith Black 10.5 to 1 pistons, a
Comp Cams bump stick, Edelbrock Air Gap
intake, Barry Grant 830 carburetor and a
Summit ready to run distributor: all topped
off by a chrome Street and Performance
Front Runner pulley system. For exhaust,
a set of ceramic coated Patriot full length
headers got the nod along with Edelbrock
RPM mufflers and a 2-1/2” X pipe exhaust
system.
With the frame, suspension and drive train
taken care of Tony turned his attention to the
body. Starting with the hood Tony removed
the area where the stock hood bird usually
sits. He replaced it with the rear section of
a doaner hoods center hood peak so the
peak would run the full length of the hood.
Next, the front outer fender extensions
were welded into the front fenders and the
wheel well lip was extended all the way to
the bumper. The hood, fender and trunk
emblem holes were welded up as well…
this car would not be sporting emblems,
just side stainless. The vent windows were
removed and the doors were set up for onepiece front door glass. Next he removed
the cowl vent, welded it up and smoothed
it out. The complete floor was repaired and
new floor sections installed along with a
new trunk section. All the body gaps were
reworked and all the body panels were fitted
and gapped.
Once the metal work was complete and
the body was massaged to perfection, it
was time for Tony, and his brother James,
to shoot the custom mixed Platinum Silver
base coat clear coat paint. Six coats of the
base along with three coats of clear give the
car it’s beautiful finish.
Once the paint was done it was time to
reassemble the car. Tony installed the
Danchuk grille surround, grille, headlight
bezels, park and tail light assemblies
smoothie front bumper and door handles.
The reworked and re-polished original side
stainless was installed along with the front
and rear glass with new seals, also from
Danchuk. New Danchuk door and trunk
seals were installed along with the rest of
the weather stripping.
Tony enlisted the help of Stewart’s Kustom
Interiors in Tuscaloosa, Alabama for the
interior work, the only task he would sub
out. Stewart’s would install the custom
console that Tony built, along with custom
front buckets, a custom rear seat, door
panels and trunk upholstery all covered in
Lipstick Red leather. Tony whipped up a
custom mix of paint to match the leather
Danchuk . . . “There’s No Comparison”
in both color and especially sheen to use
on the dash, garnish moldings and window
trim just to make everything perfect. The
interior was finished out with an Ididit
steering column, Custom Rod Gauges,
Lokar brake and gas pedals, Lokar shifter,
Clayton Machine Shop door and window
cranks and a Pete’s Fabrications custom
dash trim purchased from Danchuk.
The car was finished early in 2010 and it
was an immediate hit wherever it went.
It has won a number of awards since
completion, most notably the Goodguys
Builders Choice Top 10 at the Goodguys
2010 Nashville event and it was the
Goodguys Choice in 2010 at Bowling
Green, Kentucky. At Shades of the Past
in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee it was one of
the top 25 cars in 2010 along with some
stiff competition. And it won Best in Show
at Scraping the Coast in Biloxi, Mississippi
in 2011.
Thanks for letting us share your 55 in the
Danchuk Update, Tony...it’ a real work of art!
