Religious life today is very different from what it was when I
entered the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany in 1963. The Church
was in the midst of Vatican II but religious women were still
wearing traditional habits that were symbols of our separation
from the rest of “the world”. We were assigned to different
places “filling slots” as needs arose in traditional ministries.
Today we do a wider variety of ministries in response to the
needs of the times, dress in contemporary clothing, and often do
not live in traditional convent buildings. I believe that the
changes that have taken place enable us to be more in touch with
those to whom and with whom we minister.
Our numbers have diminished and our median age has risen!
Women entering religious congregations today are not the
teen-agers that we were, frequently choosing religious life as a
“second career”.
Religious life may be defined by a public commitment to
respond to the Gospel call with the assistance of the vows of
poverty, chastity and obedience. Consecrated religious usually
make a lifestyle choice to do this by living in some form of
community with others who share the charism of their founder.
We all are called to live the Gospel by virtue of our Baptism,
whether we decide to do so as single, married or consecrated
persons. Being part of a religious community does not imply a
greater degree of holiness than that of any other person, nor in
these times do we see the ministries of the Church being done
exclusively by religious. One of the perks if you will of
diminishing numbers in religious communities is that many of
the ministries done by the sisters in the past are now being done
by qualified, committed lay people who have assumed their
proper place in the Church.
My Congregation celebrates the jubilees of their members
based on the day of their reception, which for me was July 2,
1964. I celebrated my jubilee at our Motherhouse in Allegany in
May and in June with my family. I would like to celebrate with
you, my parish family on Saturday, October 18th. We will
gather in St. Francis Church at 2:00 PM for a prayer service
followed by light refreshments in the Center. Being with you for
the past ten years has brought me much joy and I look forward to
celebrating with you next Saturday!

Franciscan Spiritual Center
presents:
Spiritual Direction
Are you interested in a deeper relationship with God? Do you
experience a desire to pray always? Are you searching for a better
understanding of the actions of God’s grace in your life?
Spiritual Direction is not about problem solving. It is neither
counseling nor therapy. It is about enhancing one’s prayer life.
Directors help people recognize and respond to God’s will in their life
experiences. One Director summed up the process this way, “All I do
is listen. People already have a spiritual life; they are not starting
here. Often they need relief from the pressure that they are not doing
the right thing. I help them see the goodness in where they are on
their journey, not where they think they’re supposed to be.” God is
the real spiritual director.
The Diocese of Trenton has several training programs called an
internship. These are two or three year programs focusing on
deepening one’s own spiritual life and on learning the dynamics of
Spiritual Direction. Upon completion of the program a person
receives a Certificate from the Diocese.
Our parish has three certified Spiritual Directors and two interns.
During the internship period individuals give spiritual direction and
submit reports of the sessions for supervision.
There is no charge for Spiritual Direction. If you think this might
be a way for you to recognize God’s actions in your life please call:
Maryann Barrek, ofs, (609) 492-7502,
Barbara Horwath, ofs, (609) 384-6188, or
or Pat Simmons, ofs, (609) 661-1361.
Anne Bock, ofs, Intern, (609) 492-3015 or
Sharon DeSipio, ofs, Intern, (609) 492-4690.
An Invitation to Contemplative Living
This program calls out to those who desire to live more
contemplatively in the world, to grow in union with God and
others, and to become more aware, intentional and free. God
liberates us and heals us through the practice of contemplative
prayer. Monthly sessions on the practice of contemplative
prayer are scheduled. This group meets from 9:45 AM to
12:00 PM in the Sr. Lounge.
There will be NO MEETING IN OCTOBER.
Men’s Spirituality
The Men’s Spirituality group meets on the third Saturday of
each month from 8:30 to 10:00 AM in Room 212. We discuss
a broad variety of topics and share our views on how we can
see the hand of God at work in all things. All are welcome.
Next scheduled meeting: October 18, Room 212
RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
“What Does It Mean To Be Catholic?”
“What Is Catholicism?”
a 2,000 year old living tradition?...a mystery?
...a relationship?...a way of life?...a world view?
We invite those who are Catholic, those who want to have your
questions answered, those who want to learn more about the
Catholic Faith, those who are preparing to celebrate the
sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, and
those who are seeking to continue to find God in the everyday
goodness of life to join with us as we continue to journey in
faith with God and one another.
The RCIA is a process that enables us to reflect on our
identity and our mission as people of God.
Classes meet on Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:00 PM in Rm. 212
unless otherwise noted.
Next scheduled meeting: October 14.

Is God Calling You?
Vocational discernment groups meet to assist young men who
are discerning the possibility that God may be calling them to a
life of priestly ministry. These groups are designed to explore a
priestly vocation with other like-minded men through prayer and
sharing vocation stories and experiences. The group meetings
are not meant to convince anyone that the priesthood is their
vocation. They are designed to assist you in discovering if the
priesthood is your true vocation and build your relationship with
Christ along the way.
If you are a faithful, single Roman Catholic man, between the
ages of 18 and 40, and are asking yourself whether God is
calling you to be a priest, you are cordially invited to attend this
month’s discernment meeting on October 26th, from 4:00 to
6:00 PM at Saint Gregory the Great Parish, 4620 Nottingham
Way, Hamilton Square, New Jersey. Join Rev. Michael
McClane and Rev. Tom Vala, as they share their experiences of
the priesthood, followed by prayer and concluding with a great
meal and conversation.
Please register with the Diocese of Trenton Vocation Office at
[email protected] or by calling (609) 406-7449.
Join us at this exciting time as you discover and respond to His
invitation!
The JPIC Corner:
Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation
Natural law forms the foundation of Catholic teaching on justice
issues and the Church teaches that its moral conclusions are
based on human reason. A statement by Pope Benedict XVI
about the environment serves as an example: "Everyone can see
today that humanity could destroy the foundation of its own
existence, its earth, and therefore we can't simply do whatever
we want with this earth that has been entrusted to us, what
seems to us in a given moment useful or promising, but we have
to respect the inner laws of creation, of this earth, we have to
learn these laws and obey them if we want to survive. Existence
itself, our earth, speaks to us, and we have to learn to listen."
Pope Benedict was imploring all people, religious and not, to
recognize what is reasonable and possible.
