Western Power Approved Inverters Document updated 4 November 2014 Approved inverters These tables list those inverters that have been assessed and approved by Western Power as meeting the criteria which makes them suitable for connection to the distribution network within the South West Interconnected System (grid). Listed inverters have been grouped into tables for Inverter Energy Systems (IES): 1. 3 kW or less that are pre-approved requiring only a connection notification; 2. Larger than 3 kW requiring a connection application and Western Power evaluation and approval prior to installation and energisation; 3. Incorporating energy (battery) storage facilities Inverters listed in tables 1 and 2 have been assessed as meeting the criteria for grid connection without the capability to incorporate battery storage. Therefore inverters in tables 1 and 2 shall not be connected to Western Power network in configurations that include battery storage facilities. Inverters listed in table 3 have been assessed as meeting the criteria for grid connection with the capability to incorporate battery storage. Battery capable inverters require a manufacturer declaration indicating that energy injection from the battery to the network can be prevented and that the inverter settings that enable this restriction can be secured from being changed. The inverter and protection equipment must be certified by a recognised testing laboratory and approved prior to being connected to the distribution network. It is the manufacturer’s or their agent’s responsibility to formally seek approval and to ensure that the inverter’s certification remains current. Inverters that do not have both the required independent certification and Western Power’s approval must not be, or remain, connected to the grid. For further information on the inverter certification process please refer to the Table Notes or Section 15 of the Western Australian Distribution Connections Manual located on Western Power’s public web site. Connection notifications and applications In addition to the inverter certification requirement all proposed customer Inverter Energy System installations and connections to the grid require the following: • • Submission of a connection “notification” or “application” to Western Power, which must nominate the approved inverter to be installed. Western Power evaluation and approval prior to installation for IES systems that fall outside the connection “notification” only eligibility criteria. Western Power application, evaluation and approval process considers the effect of an IES system on the local grid power quality which in some instances, especially rural areas, may result in rejection or alternatively a request for a revised application proposing inverter/s of reduced capacity. These lists detail all inverters which are acceptable for connection to Western Power’s distribution network at this time. Applicants wishing to participate in the buyback and feed in tariff schemes referred to above must ensure proposed inverter capacity is within the requirements of these schemes. 6. Inverter power ratings listed in this table are manufacturers published values of a.c. output of: • maximum power, or • maximum and nominal where the same, or • nominal where maximum value not published. 7. The Inverter power ratings listed in this table are usually shown as the maximum output but in some cases the manufacturer has chosen to limit the power output to establish a new maximum by using settings in the embedded control software. In such a case the rating is shown as, for example, a figure of 3.0 (3.3) where 3.0 is the new maximum limit pre-set by the manufacturer and (3.3) is the original maximum 24 output. In the case of inverters incorporating batteries 3.0 would be the factory pre-set grid injection limit and 3.3 the nominal input/output power rating. 25
