Superintendent’s Message
Dear Parents,
Every week that I sit down to write my Gecko article I’m amazed at how fast the time is passing by. This week is
already midpoint of the second quarter which only leaves us a hand full of teaching days until the Holiday break. ItВґs
hard to believe! With the end of the semester just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to look at your child’s
academic program with a critical eye, probing for areas that need to be fine-tuned. Have you followed through on the
improvement plan you developed during your parent-teacher conference? Has your child followed through on the
improvement plan you developed during your parent-teacher conference? Is your child up to date on all homework?
Have you asked your child if all assignments are up to date? Are you happy with your child’s overall sentiments about
school? If you answered NO to any of these questions, it’s time to get things back on track! Give us a call and schedule
a meeting with the classroom teacher. Preventive maintenance should play an important role in your family’s academic
plan.
For the leadership team, these next couple of weeks will be especially busy as it is the official start to the recruiting
season. The principals and I are preparing to attend our regional AASSA job fair following the Thanksgiving weekend.
It’s an exciting event and critical to the continuation of our excellent school program. Rest assured that we’ll be looking
for next year’s batch of first-rate teachers who can carry on the great progress made this year. Leading up to the fair,
teacher teams in each division will be skype interviewing potential candidates and passing on the top finalists to be
interviewed by the principals and myself. It’s a long process to review CV’s, interview candidates, and perform critical
background checks. We have your children in mind as we are at the AASSA recruiting fair looking for the best of the
best, those inspirational few who are ready to join the ranks of our community.
Have a great weekend while keeping safe and sane.

Christmas for Everyone
Sponsored by the Lincoln High School Community Service Club
Our goal is to “share” a meal during the Holiday Season with local families from La Lucila, Barrio La Rana, Barrio
Martin y Omar, en San Isidro and a school in Salta. We are ambitiously aiming to provide 150 families with holiday
boxes.
HOW DO YOU VOLUNTEER?
Get together a group of people (family, friends, colleagues, class, advisory group) and email
[email protected] before Friday, November 21st. Let her know how many boxes you want to
prepare. On Wednesday, November 26, you will be matched with a family (you will be given: family name,
members, gender and age of the kids in the family). Please bear in mind that your word of intent to participate in this
project implies a commitment.
HOW TO PREPARE A HOLIDAY BOX
1. Get a heavy and durable box, properly sealed with packing tape and fill up with items from the list below.
2. Make sure that the heavy items are in the corners and weight is evenly distributed.
3. Once all items have been placed in the box, if there is any room left over, fill it up with folded, shredded or balled
up newspaper for shipping. Boxes are being shipped as far away as Salta so this is very important.
4. Close the box, making sure to use an abundant amount of packing tape.
5. Wrap the box in colorful holiday paper or decorated plain paper as if you were wrapping a present.
LIST OF ITEMS:
Friday Flash

How stress affects our life?
As adults, we tend to view the world of children as happy and carefree. What could they possibly have to worry about?
Plenty! Even very young children have worries and feel stress to some degree.
Sources of Stress
Stress is a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that demands exceed the personal and social
resources the individual is able to mobilize.
These demands often come from outside sources, such as family, jobs, friends, or school. But it also can come from
within, often related to what we think we should be doing versus what we're actually able to do.
- In preschoolers, separation from parents can cause anxiety.
- As kids get older, academic and social pressures (especially from trying to fit in) create
stress.
- Many kids are too busy to have time to play creatively or relax after school.
Friday Flash
Page 4
November 14, 2014
-
Kids' stress may be intensified by more than just what's happening in their own lives. World news can cause stress.
Also, complicating factors, such as an illness, death of a loved one, or a divorce.
Signs and Symptoms
It's not always easy to recognize when kids are stressed out. These are some of the symptoms:
• Short-term behavioral changes, such as mood swings, acting out, changes in sleep patterns, or bedwetting.
• Trouble concentrating or completing schoolwork. Others might become withdrawn or spend a lot of time alone.
• Physical effects, including stomachaches and headaches.
• Pick up new habits like thumb sucking, hair twirling, or nose picking; older kids may begin to lie, bully, or defy
authority.
• Nightmares, difficulty leaving parents, overreactions to minor problems, and drastic changes in academic
performance.
How can I cope with and prevent stress?
Stress is a part of life, but the healthier you are, the better you’ll manage stress when it happens.
#1: Avoid unnecessary stress
Not all stress can be avoided, and it’s not healthy to avoid a situation that needs to be addressed. You
may be surprised, however, by the number of stressors in your life that you can eliminate.
#2: Alter the situation
If you can’t avoid a stressful situation, try to alter it. Figure out what you can do to change things so the
problem doesn’t present itself in the future. Often, this involves changing the way you communicate and
operate in your daily life.
#3: Adapt to the stressor
If you can’t change the stressor, change yourself. You can adapt to stressful situations and regain your sense of control
by changing your expectations and attitude.
#4: Accept the things you can’t change
Some sources of stress are unavoidable. You can’t prevent or change stressors such as the death of a loved one, a serious
illness, or a national recession. In such cases, the best way to cope with stress is to accept things as they are. Acceptance
may be difficult, but in the long run, it’s easier than railing against a situation you can’t change.
#5: Make time for fun and relaxation
Beyond a take-charge approach and a positive attitude, you can reduce stress in your life by nurturing yourself. If you
regularly make time for fun and relaxation, you’ll be in a better place to handle life’s stressors.
#6: Adopt a healthy lifestyle
You can increase your resistance to stress by strengthening your physical health. Exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet,
reduce caffeine and sugar, avoid alcohol, cigarettes, drugs and get enough sleep.

Greetings from the Elementary School Principal’s Office!
We have certainly been busy since the last Friday Flash. Math Morning was celebrated today. Our internal and external
(MAP) testing results illustrate very positive, above expected norm, Math results for our students. We have found
EveryDay Math to give our students a very strong conceptual base as well as supporting and strengthening creativity.
Math Morning was a wonderful way to learn more about our EveryDay Math program and to play, with your child(ren),
the educational Math games which are integrated into the program. In order to promote positive school spirit and a
connection to this year’s theme: “Care, Share, and Be Fair!” we are also recognizing random acts of kindness. Come see
how these random positive acts are being celebrated on our RAK tree outside of the Library.

Our teachers love to teach! They love to direct learning! To do this, consistent student attendance is essential. I cannot
begin to tell you the number of teachers from whom I received these connected comments. We really value our teaching
time and so we ask your full support in having your children in school all day long, every day for the remainder of the
semester and the school year. Missed instructional time is also compounded by the missed learning opportunities that
take place during directed peer interaction. Let’s work together to make full use of our resources.
On Monday 17 November our Physical Education classes will be all wet! We will begin to have PE Classes in the
Lincoln pool. Swimming is such a wonderful example of a life skill which promotes physical and emotional health.
Lincoln School is fortunate to have the facilities and teachers to make this happen. Proficiency and confidence in
swimming are positive characteristics which go hand in hand. As swimming is an integral part of the P.E. curriculum, it
is important that your child be prepared to swim for every scheduled class. If your child cannot swim due to a medical
condition, please provide a doctor’s excuse. Otherwise, we will encourage all students to swim! Click on this link to find
more information about the Lincoln Elementary School Swim Program.
Next week will end with two big events. On Friday 21 November, all of Grade 1 will be hosting our Fabulous Friday
and a “Wax Museum” presentation of historic autobiographies will be hosted by our 5th graders. Reading
autobiographies can help us to learn more about ourselves. Here is an interesting blog on leadership and learning entitled
Five Reasons to Read More Biographies. Both events are open to all parents and will take place in the Auditorium. The
Fabulous Friday happens at 8:00AM. The wax museum will take place from 11:00 to 11:50AM. Don’t miss either!
Have a wonderful weekend!

SPANISH COLLECTION VISITS
ItВґs time to return library books. Next week all elementary students will be visiting the library with their Spanish
teachers. We are asking that all students return their library books at the beginning of the week. This will allow them
to take full advantage of our Spanish collection.

EMPOWERING BYSTANDERS TO BECOME UPSTANDERS
Friday Flash
Page 6
November 14, 2014
One of the important topics that I have been discussing with students in counseling classes is that of becoming an
“upstander” – someone who stands up and gets involved when others are being treated in a hurtful way, as opposed to
just standing by and doing nothing.
Some of the things that we encourage the children to do, to be an upstander, are:
п‚· Don't laugh or encourage the bully in any way
п‚· Stay at a safe distance and help the target get away
 Don’t become an "audience" for the bully
п‚· Reach out in friendship
 Very confidentially say this isn’t cool or funny to the bully (if you feel comfortable doing so)
п‚· Sit with the target at lunch or in class (especially after an incident)
п‚· Support the victim in private
п‚· Include the victim in some of your activities
п‚· Tell an adult in confidence
As adults in the lives of our children, here are some ways we can then empower bystanders to become upstanders:
• Encourage empathy.
• Talk to your child about what to do if they see bullying.
• Role play responses to specific situations
• Help to understand tattling is different from reporting
• Behave with kindness, integrity and courage yourself. Teach your child to value these traits in others.
• Reinforce accepting personal responsibility for choices
• Normalize fears and worries.
• Emphasize strength in numbers.
• Communicate the expectation to take action.
• Teach skills and strategies to take a stand.
• Notice and acknowledge caring behaviors.

GRADES 6 AND 7 END OF QUARTER EXAMINATIONS/PROJECTS
Grade 6 and 7 students will have end of quarter examination / project in their core subjects (English, Math, Science,
Social Studies, Lengua and Est. Sociales). Core subject teachers are expected to plan a culminating exam/project from
December 11 -15. The examinations will be held during regular class time from December 11-15. End of quarter
examination grades will be incorporated into the 2 nd quarter grade.
SPANISH DEPARTMENT
Every year, grade 6 SSL new students led by Ms. Masutti, carry out an activity which helps students incorporate
vocabulary and grammar structures related to the topic of food. The activity involves going to a neighborhood
supermarket with the purpose of buying food to cook in class. During the visit, students read the labels of the products,
ask the staff for information, choose products, look for prices and offers, and learn how to manage Argentine currency
and pay the bill (interaction with the cashiers). Then they come back to school, put everything together, and prepare the
recipes. The result of this experience is very positive. Students show great interest and learn hand on.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL “SPAMALOT”
Come laugh a lot at with the Lincoln High School Arts Department and Spamalot, the musical lovingly ripped off from
the internationally renowned comedy team’s most popular film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. A huge cast of the
brightest stars at Lincoln, wonderful singers, our top musicians, and best technicians make up the delightfully
zany Monty Python's Spamalot, running in the theatre November 20 at 7pm, Nov. 21 at 7pm, and Nov. 22 at
3pm. This highly irreverent parody of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is the recipient of three Tony
Awards, including Best Musical and fourteen Tony Award nominations. The Lincoln Arts brings you a chorus line of
dancing divas and knights, flatulent Frenchmen, a killer rabbit and more madcap mirth than a headless knight! Tickets
are available in the mansion.

Girls’ and boys’ high school basketball practices start next week, beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The teams will

UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS
Please encourage your son or daughter to complete the university applications well before final exams in December. It is
very important that an adult review the application and essay before submitting. Please remind your child that Ms.
McDowell is willing to look over their work. It’s important to plan wisely and not wait until the last moment.
DEADLINES
Deadlines for students are approaching quickly! Any student who is applying to a college/university with a deadline
before February 2015 must complete a Transcript Request Form and submit it before 24 November so that it can be
processed before the summer holiday. Any request which is submitted after this date will not be guaranteed to be
completed before the university deadline. Please speak to your child and impress upon him/her that meeting this
deadline is of utmost importance! If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. McDowell.
Any student request for a teacher recommendation should have been completed by 7 November. Please speak with your
child and make sure he/she has taken care of this important part of the university application process.
UCAS Applications
Any student applying to university in the UK must have his/her application completed and submitted online to Ms.
McDowell by 1 December for it to be processed before the deadline. Any application submitted after 1 December is not
guaranteed to be submitted before the university deadline. If there are any questions, please contact Ms. McDowell.
SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Seniors applying to attend university in the US and who is interested in applying for a scholarship should pick up the
information and application for the Margaret Sanders Foundation International School Scholarship from Ms McDowell.
The application form, essay and supporting information is due to the counseling office by Thursday, 20 November.
Scholarship money is paid directly to the university to cover educational expenses. Ask your son or daughter to see Ms
McDowell if there are any questions.
Juniors and SAT
If your child is planning on attending university in the US or any another location where the SAT is required, it is
recommended that he/she takes the SAT on the 24 January test date (registration deadline is 18 December). It is most
important that your child set up the College Board account and register for the test using his/her full (passport) name. If
there are any questions, please contact Ms McDowell in the HS Counseling Office.
Ms. McDowell will be out of the office next week (19-21 November) while she attends the Council of International
Schools Forum on University Admissions. The conference of over 500 participants provides the opportunity for high
school counselors and university admissions officers to work together collaboratively in professional development.

Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys to children,
whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas.
In the past years the Girl Scouts have held a collection box at Lincoln school and it’s been a huge success.
This year the Girl Scouts want to help the US Marines Corps again and will be having a collection box at the entrance of
the elementary school, from December 1st to 5th, from 3:30 pm to 4:00 pm.
Help us to put a smile on children's faces this holiday season,
by giving new unwrapped toys.
