Welcome from your chairman
I HOPE all of us survived Halloween with trick or treat and of course Bonfire Night with all
the wonderful displays. This is truly a time for the young ones and I hope all of the young
at heart, as we in the U3A are. So welcome to the November meeting, not long to
Christmas; we have our Christmas Lunch to look forward to and we must thank Norma
Shillinglaw for volunteering to organise the lunch. Tickets are available at the November
meeting. (ВЈ17.00 each by cheque to Mansfield U3A please.)
My wife, Sue, and I have just returned from the USA where we visited Washington and in
Thomas Jefferson's Monument there are inscriptions. I would like to share part of one
with you:
"I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws
and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As
that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made,
new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of
circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We
might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as
civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors."
I hope you agree that these words, written in 1816, are as relevant today. Cast your mind
back ten years, twenty years, thirty years and compare life then with now. Things change
quickly nowadays and we in the U3A need to keep abreast of them.
We have just changed our constitution and it will soon be on our website along with much
more information. The website may become more and more our main way of keeping up
with all the news of the U3A unless someone volunteers to service the notice boards as
the present volunteer is stepping down at the end of this year. So as another great man
said: "Ask not what your U3A can do for you but what can you do for your U3A”.
Volunteers please step forward.
As we look forward to the festive season it may be time to think of others not so fortunate
and after Remembrance Day still think of those no longer with us.

THURSFORD SPECTACULAR: 3rd, 4th & 5th December 2014
It is important that you pick up your packs for Thursford at the November meeting since they contain
your luggage labels, coach plans, itineraries and a couple of maps. The following information I shall
announce but am also writing it in the newsletter as a reminder. All those in the Mansfield Woodhouse area who would like to park at the Sidings or even get on the coach there after being
dropped off, must tell me at the meeting because the driver will obviously need to know and also the
Travel company have to be informed. You will need to be there by 9.15am and the rest should be in
front of 'Iceland' on Walkden Street no later than 9.45am. We shall be leaving at 10am.
DANUBE RIVER CRUISE: 11th - 20th April 2015
All deposits will be sent off to the Travel Company after the 21st November as I am hoping that I
can sell the last two cabins that are on the Panorama deck. The River Cruise Line is holding these

the excursions included, is very good value for money. Incidentally balances will be due no later
than the February meeting.

Book Table Report
SALE OF books in October raised ВЈ37.60. Figures are a bit down; perhaps Kindle has something to
do with it? Variable font size may help the visually challenged but our books are only 40p each.
For new members: the books are ALL 40p, cheaper than most charity shops and all the proceeds
go to keeping the annual Mansfield U3A subs down. Books are generally kept for 3 months in our
large dry garage, after which they are donated to charity.
From the back corner we have magazines (20p each) and cookery books. Then anticlockwise the
next table contains travel, autobiography and factual material. A couple of boxes of DVDs and CDs
(20p) and then round the corner books by male authors. Some types of book are more suited to
male readers, such as murder, war and horror. Patricia Cornwell etc. are kept in this section. Then
round the corner again are female authors' books.
Why not spend 10 minutes before the meeting starts picking up a book for Christmas? Then you
can see what books you can bring in the following month. Having said that, there is no book stall in
December so get down to the stall now and finish reading your magazine when you get home.

Antiques and Collectables anniversary
FOR OUR first anniversary meeting we invited all
the members who are waiting to join the group to
come along. Twelve of them came and together
with the regulars we had a full house.
Our guest speaker was Rodney Cousins, a
retired museum curator, who brought along some
objects from yesteryear for a quiz called Items
from Granny’s Attic’.
Some of the items looked familiar and others not
so. Each item was given a number and then we
were provided with a sheet of cryptic clues to
match to the items. Not too difficult you would
think except that there were more items than
clues to deliberately confuse us. As well as that
some of the clues could easily match more than
one object!
There was much discussion, laughter and
sharing of answers. More than once I heard
'What did you get for that one?' It was all very light-hearted and entertaining. The winners were Avril
McGee, shown with Rodney on the front page, and Sue Longden. Congratulations to them.

So 'Tu2, 2.30 - V M' would mean a group meeting on the 2nd Tuesday at 2.30pm Monthly but with
Variable finish times.
The main Mansfield and District U3A meetings are on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (except August
and December) at the Oakham Suite, 155 Nottingham Road, Mansfield from 10 am - 12.30 pm.

Groups News
Heartstart
LINDA LEIVERS'S Heart Start initiative, lead by Sharron Reynolds's team at William Kaye Hall,
Ladybrook Lane and funded by the British Heart Foundation, has suffered delays and set-backs to
their heart-awareness course over several months so I was delighted that my opportunity came up
recently.
What an important and helpful course it proved to be in bringing awareness, knowledge and skills to
anyone presented with a sudden heart-alarm incident.
Sharron says over 70 U3A members have taken the course, which might reassure members that
there is no safer place to be than a U3A general meeting! But sadly you might die as a result, if too
many first-responders leap on you in their eagerness to demonstrate newly-acquired skills and the
opportunity to help, or argue and waste valuable time in discussion.
Time is of the essence, they say. But so is knowledge!
Jackie Ling

Our November meeting is our little Christmas Party as we don't meet in December.
I would like to say a big thank you to everyone for their support throughout the year.
Subs are due by the January meeting. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Very
Merry Christmas and a Happy&Healthy New Year.

Art
WE MET on 15th October with 11 members. It
was self-portrait day and seemingly everyone
enjoyed this session either by using photographs of themselves or by using small
pedestal mirrors to look at themselves.
It was observed by Michael Morton that
everyone had made themselves look years
younger!
I left some wrinkles off mine. However, it is very difficult to show any kind of age on portraits and
achieving a resemblance to the sitter is virtually impossible for the novice, like myself.
We meet again on 19 November, when we'll be trying our hand at drawing or painting birds.
Linda Spray
Luncheon Club
OUR OCTOBER lunch at the recently-refurbished Denby Lodge at Ripley attracted four new
members who took-up my invitation at the October monthly meeting to join us as the best way to
overcome any understandable shyness they might feel in trying to make friends in a hall full of
people they don't know.
And the proof is in the pudding (pardon the pun!) as all four fitted-in quickly in true Mansfield U3A
style and told me they want to get involved with more interest groups. One even asked about
helping with the website, another offered to organise a lunch and a third about starting a golf group
Page 9 of 12
– all within the first three days of their membership! (Linda Leivers is now helping the golfer and I
hope she'll have news soon.)
Other interest groups that will soon have new recruits, if they haven't already, include Singing for
Fun, Chat & Stitch, Walking, Caravans & Motorhomes, Art, Gardening and Garden Visits. So many
thanks to Norma Shillinglaw, whose gave me the same advice years ago..
Thanks are also due to Gordon and Sue Howlett, whose debut lunch organisation was a triumph. I
don't know how they found such an outstanding combination of friendly and efficient service at such
low prices so we're all looking forward to more suggestions from them. (The cream on the top of this
lunch – another pun – was that many members indulged in some retail therapy afterwards at the
Denby Pottery factory outlet nearby.)
Our November lunch at Fothergill's – the refurbished Lamb's – is already sold out with a waiting list
but bookings are open for this year's 'Joyeux Noel' fine-dining lunch at Launay's on 11th December
with prices ranging from ВЈ15.95 for 2 courses to ВЈ38.50 for 5. (Guests welcome but pre-book
please with ВЈ10 deposit.). Menu highlights include oysters, seared salmon, blade of beef Bourguignon, beetroot risotto, guinea fowl, cassoulet, tarte tatin and chef's famous chocolate pot.
Please pre-book at the Lunch Club table or by email to [email protected].

Digital World
OUR OCTOBER theme of 'Autumn' had
members thinking colours, Halloween and
fireworks and many submissions demonstrated some new-found skills with the Lightroom editing software that's proving popular
with newcomers as a step onwards from
members' favourite Picasa, without the challenges of learning Photoshop.
We have a few vacancies so do come along
to Stanton Hill Baptist Church on any second
Friday in the month (2.00 – 4.00), apart from
December, and join in. It doesn't matter how
much or little you know or what camera you
use as we all gain by learning from each
other.

Antiques and Collectables
AT OUR September meeting, we celebrated our 1st birthday with a quiz with cryptic clues on items
from Granny’s Attic, provided by Rodney Cousins. It proved to be a fun event as Pat reports on
page 4 and I am sure everyone gained some knowledge.
During the course of the year, our meetings have covered many topics, Royal Memorabilia, Glass,
Christmas & Seasonal, Treen, Silver, Textiles, War Related Items, Paper, Books & Publications,
Advertising, and Bowls.
Each member brought an item relating to the topic and provided some interesting information about
it. Sometimes it was factual, other times anecdotal, but always very interesting. What would we do
without the internet for our research?
Many items prompted memories and often other members said “Oh, I had one of those”.
We had a coach trip to Hemswell Antiques Centre, there was an interesting’ variety of items for
sale, and it was certainly a trip down Memory Lane. There were various places serving food at reasonable prices and everyone seemed to have enjoyed the day.
Thank you to Pat Blackwell and her able assistants Marlene and Ian for setting up this group. We
have all learned more about antiques this year and look forward to next year.
Brenda Corbett
Gardening
THERE WAS a good turnout for the last Gardening Group meeting of 2014 earlier this month. Our
members have thoroughly enjoyed 9 months of interesting and varied speakers and topics and
what a glorious summer and autumn we have had to get into our gardens and enjoy visiting other
people’s gardens!
We have been learning about garden design and history, roses and lillies and even been behind the
scenes in a small nursery. We have shared produce and recipes from each other’s gardens, taxed
our brains in Jackie’s Quiz and learned how to arrange the flowers and foliage that we have grown.
How can we forget the beautiful sweet peas at Easton Walled Garden?
Now we have a short break, during which time the Gardening Group organisers will get our heads
together to arrange what we hope will be another exciting programme for 2015.

Keeping the brain active can keep mental deterioration at bay and even stave-off depression, researchers have found.
RETIREMENT usually coincides with the start of the natural decline in brain power and the switch
from busy work life to the slower pace of old age can leave a void needing to be filled with tasks that
are mentally stimulating. However, a hobby such as reading, socialising or travelling that is mentally
engaging and enjoyable preserves your brainpower and boosts mental health during retirement,
scientists have found.
The slowdown in activity when people start drawing their pension means the brain is used less and
less, having long-term implications for its ability to perform properly. Anyone who exhibits even the
mildest signs of depression is likely to suffer a decline in brainpower once they leave work.
The more pensioners took part in activities that are enjoyable and mentally demanding, the less
likely they are to experience a decline in brainpower, while keeping the activities varied boosts brain
health and longevity, it is said.
Clinical psychologist Dr Larry Baer led the study at Concordia University in Montreal. He explained:
"Retirement usually occurs right around the time when normal age-related declines in cognitive
function come to the fore. So it is important to understand what is happening to brainpower during
this period and to identify risk factors for mental decline, as well as protect against it … by getting
people to engage in a variety of cognitive activities even if they lack the motivation to do so."
Dr Baer's team looked at reports conducted over four years from 333 retirees, who had an average
age of 59 , were in good health overall and were without any serious mobility limitations.

Speakers' Corner
OUR speaker today is Matt Palmer, who has been teaching art for over 20 years. He
has appeared on Sky TV & on the Create & Craft programme. He uses the local
environment to inspire his paintings from rural Derbyshire to collieries. Also his
painting holidays inspire his works of the sea and coastline.
Today Matt will paint a winter scene for us giving tips along the way.
