November Club Bulletin - Roseville Rock Rollers

The Rollin’ Rock
Bulletin of the
Roseville Rock Rollers Gem & Mineral Society, Inc.
Volume 55, Issue 11 - November 2014
From the President’s Pen
What a wonderful Rock Hound organization we have!
Many members have given of their time and talents to
help keep this hobby alive and moving forward for our
next generation. There's always something that you can
do. Many of our current membership are reaping the rewards of the labor of love given/built for us. Always ask
yourself, what can I do to help keep this great rock
hounding hobby vibrant for others. Then do it.
When there's a class offering, take it - the instructor or
class may not be here next time. We've been very fortunate to have class offerings from our members of lapidary, carving, opal, intarsia, turquoise, wire wrapping,
mineral ID and petrified wood. One of those great classes
rarely seen elsewhere will be here! The Basics of Petrified Wood Identification class will be Saturday, November 15.
Educational Program
for November 11, 2014
Field Trip to Trona,
by Teresa Johnson
For more than seventy years, countless thousands
of visitors have come to Trona to collect some of
the best and most desirable evaporite mineral
specimens in the world. This year was one of the
best! Our November 11th program will update
you on this wonderful field trip.
Our next educational presentation will be about how a
couple of Rock Rollers went to the Trona 2014 outing.
Their internal batteries were recharged as they met other
rock hounds who were just as enamored with rocks and
lapidary as we are. It's great to know that we're not alone,
that others share in our love for rocks, geology, earth science and lapidary. Sometimes, it's just about getting outside. Other times, it's about finding a hidden treasure in
our surroundings..
— Teresa Johnson
Field Trip Chairperson Wanted!
Inside this issue:
This officer position is a great way to spend time with other Rock Hounds.
It does entail going to RRR Board meetings and reporting on upcoming
trips. RRR is part of the Field Trip Chairman's Association (Co-op). As
our club Field Trip Chairperson, you will:
• Be coordinator of club field trips.
• Attend and participate at the quarterly Co-op meeting, where you collect information on other club field trips, then disseminate collected
field trip information to our club members by making announcements/
reports at club meetings and through the bulletin.
• Plan a field trip to share with other Co-op clubs.
• Last but not least, follow club policies involving waivers, sign-ins, and
insurance.

More Precious than Gold
Hard to believe now, but aluminum was once a very precious
metal that was very difficult to refine. Finally, in 1886 the
new Hall–Héroult process used electricity to heat molten cryolite mixed with bauxite to make pure aluminum. Then cryolite became a scarce resource because it was abundant in just
one deposit in Ivittuut, Greenland. After that ran out, cryolite
was artificially produced so we could keep making beer cans
and airplanes.
Cryolite from Greenland
A small but very expensive aluminum pyramid was set atop the
Washington Monument on its completion in 1884 to serve the functional purpose of a
lightning rod. "Americans wanting only the best to commemorate our founding father
George Washington, fashioned the Washington Monument apex out of the uncommon
metal." The pyramid was so expensive that it was displayed at Tiffany’s before being installed atop the monument.

Blue Topaz Is Irradiated
Gemstone irradiation is a process
in which a gemstone is artificially irradiated in order to enhance
its optical properties. High levels
of ionizing radiation can change
the atomic structure of the gemstone's crystal lattice, which in turn alters the optical
properties within it. As a result, the gemstone's color
may be significantly altered or the visibility of its inclusions may be lessened. The process, widely practiced in
jewelry industry, is done in either a nuclear reactor for
neutron bombardment, a particle accelerator for electron
bombardment, or a gamma ray facility using the radioactive isotope cobalt-60. The irradiation enabled creation of certain gemstone colors that do not exist or are
extremely rare in nature.
The most commonly irradiated gemstone is topaz,
which becomes blue after the process. Blue topaz is very
rare in nature and almost always the result of artificial
irradiation. According to the American Gem Trade Association, approximately 30 million carats (13,000 lb) of
topaz are irradiated every year globally, 40 percent of
which were done in the United States as of 1988. As of
2011, no topaz is neutron irradiated in the US; major
treatment areas are Germany and Poland. A lot of linear
accelerated treatment is done in Bangkok.
Where Is It From?
While it is a very risky
thing to attribute a location to a piece by looks
alone, this wonderful
group of amethyst crystals is almost immediately recognizable as coming from Las Vigas, Veracruz, Mexico.
Why? First of all, most amethyst crystals are stubby,
these are not. Second, they are on a thin plate covered
with a druse of green epidote crystals. Last, the crystals start out white or clear at the bottom and then
grow larger and dark purple at the top. In general, you
should not try to guess where a specimen is from by
looks alone...but sometimes looks are enough.
