As parents we provide stimulation
to develop bright children. We study
child development books. We teach
children basic math skills. Reciting
of the alphabet, forming words and
reading become a prime focus.
Planned outings are educational and
inspirational, with the ultimate goal
of creating successful children who
will excel in the world
One day, you are requested to meet
with a counsellor/teacher because
your child has been achieving low
grades. You discover that he/she
may have an identified learning
challenge. Or, perhaps there have
been behaviour issues which are
affecting marks. You ask yourself,
“How could this have happened?
We did everything possible to
make sure that our child was well
equipped for school with all of the
basic fundamentals and exposure.
We never thought that there would
be any issues!” This is where the
“We” factor of a strong parent/
child relationship breaks down and
becomes the “Me” factor.
You internalize all of the comments
as: “I have failed somewhere.
Something I have done has brought
us to this place.” You blame yourself
for the difficulty your child is now
facing. The focus is no longer “We.”
It is “Me” and the “W” has become
an “M”. Parents must learn to accept
and instead of doubt themselves,
immediately become proactive and
develop a plan of action for their
child which is right, and let the
“We” kick back in again. Deal with
this together. Your child is already
feeling inadequate. Don’t indicate
disappointment. You have been “We”
since the beginning. Never forget that!
Discover ways to help: Secure extra
help/special programmes at school,
communicate with teachers, provide
concentrated support at home,
educate yourself on the challenge,
know that outside support/resources
are available, talk to others who have
experienced this, and hire a tutor for
one on one needs and confidence
building. Too many parents think of
the learning challenge as a disability.
It is a learning challenge and life
is full of challenges. Don’t ever let
your child hear you say that he has a
disability. Hearing is believing!
As parents who have shown support
since day one, he/she needs you
more than ever now. Change the
new “Me” back to old “We” and your
child will grow, excel and thank you
for it.
2. The Gut: Digestive health is poised to
reign supreme amongst natural health
trends in 2015. Increasingly, natural
health products that support digestion,
including a diversifying probiotic
category, are being linked to
benefits beyond digestive health, such
as mental health, skin health, and
weight maintenance, among others.
3. Fermentation: The trend of
supporting digestion also extends to
fermented foods, which are no
longer limited to kimchi, tempeh and
sauerkraut. Fermentation can liberate

body better absorb them. For 2015,

5. Fancy Fats: In 2014 coconut oil
was all the rage, and while it has
many health benefits, we are seeing
more and more people using new oils,
each offering their own unique health
advantages. Some of those that will be
trending this year include:• Avocado

and vitamin E and with a high smoke
point which makes it better for use in
cooking than olive oil. • Camelina Oil Rich in mono- and poly-unsaturated

Toronto Zoo opens one of Canada’s largest indoor giraffe
viewing houses
Toronto, Ontario – The Toronto
Zoo is very excited to announce
the opening of one of the largest
indoor giraffe houses in Canada to
the public. The new habitat is 173
square metres and the giraffes can
be viewed inside where visitors will
get a unique opportunity to get up
close to this magnificent species.
The new giraffe house is currently
home to the Zoo’s 24 year-old Masai
giraffe ‘Twiga’ and her one year old
female calf ‘Mstari’ and is open year
round.
“It is estimated that there are fewer
giraffes in Africa than hippos and
they are facing ongoing threats in
the wild. The Toronto Zoo is proud
to be participating in the Masai
Giraffe Species Survival Plan (SSP)
and conservation efforts to spread
awareness of the plight of these
incredible animals”, said Maria
Franke, Curator of Mammals. There
are nine subspecies of giraffes with
two recently listed as endangered
and the others listed as least concern/
conservation dependent by the
International Union for Conservation
and Nature (IUCN). However, with
the overall 40% decline observed
in the wild giraffe population over
the past 15 years due to habitat
destruction and poaching, risk of
higher classifications is likely/
imminent.
The new indoor viewing house
has a beautiful African Savanna
landscape mural with several new
features that help the keepers
care for the giraffes. This includes
different feeding stations which
allow keepers numerous feeding
enrichment opportunities for the
tallest land mammal on earth, a
fallen log enrichment devise that
encourages the giraffes to use their
long, dark tongue to manipulate
and pull out food items, and hidden
raised waterers.
In addition, the new indoor house
includes a variety of graphics and an
interpretive area to provide visitors
with educational and interactive
information about this incredible
species. A life size custom illustration
of a giraffe head and neck greets you
in the front entrance vestibule, which
includes life-like giraffe vertebrae
visitors can touch and feel. Members
of the public will also be exposed to
wall-sized interactive illustrations of
all nine giraffes subspecies, where
they can compare their patterns and
where they live in Africa.
The Toronto Zoo’s new outdoor
Masai Giraffe Habitat opened to the
public in July 2014 which includes
three outdoor exhibits and a yard
covering over 4,370 square metres.
Although the exhibit will initially be
home to the Zoo’s giraffes, there are
future plans to add other species
that inhabit the African grassland
savanna, one of the most delicate
natural ecosystems on this planet.
The Toronto Zoo is Canada’s
premier zoo and a leader in animal
preservation and environmental
protection. More than a tourist
attraction, the Toronto Zoo boasts
a number of leading programs for
helping wildlife and their natural
habitats – from species reintroduction
to reproductive research. A worldclass educational centre for people
of all ages, the Toronto Zoo is open
every day except December 25 and
attracts approximately 1.3 million
visitors each year.

winter gear helps Canadians to ward
off the season’s bite for a time, but
there are other ways to keep the
persistent cold at bay for the long
term. The Canadian Health Food
Association (CHFA) recommends a
winter regime of exercise, a hearty
and healthy diet, and natural health
support to keep you warm, even
through the worst of the season.
Exercise
Regular exercise gets the blood
pumping and blood vessels dilating,
helping to distribute warmth to
our extremities. A good workout
also burns calories, a process that
produces lasting heat, so keep
moving. The rush of endorphins
we get from exercising is another
important benefit, especially in
winter, because they help to balance
our mood and combat the “winter
blues”, or seasonal affective disorder
(SAD). If the gym is not your thing,
try Ashtanga yoga, an activity that
teaches special breathing techniques
to promote internal body heat, as
well as mindfulness to combat stress.
Hearty Diet
What we eat and drink has a
lasting effect on our ability to keep
warm. In particular, spicy foods
help to raise our metabolism, which
allows our bodies to produce heat
faster. Try using ginger, cayenne
pepper, and more garlic when you
prepare hearty meals, as well as
other nutrient-rich ingredients like
tomatoes, leafy greens, and beans.
In addition, water is great at retaining
heat, so drinking eight to 10 cups of
water a day, will keep you hydrated
and warm. Drinking herbal teas or
infusing your water with seasonal
fruits adds nutritional benefits and
flavour.

Despite our best efforts, it is rare
that we are able to get all the nutrients
we need from our food alone.

(NC) Organizing the jungle that
is your closet is an excellent way
to harmonize your thoughts and
streamline your morning routine.
Plus, it’s a well-known fact that wellarranged closets equal better outfits.
Canadian style expert Janette Ewen
offers these steps to achieve closet
calm:
1. Host a closet intervention: Cleanse
yourself and your closet by inviting a
trusted (and stylish!) friend over and
sorting your closet together. Begin
with the items you adore but don’t
wear regularly. Imagine new ways
to wear them and determine if they
can be tailored. “If you figure out an
inventive way to revisit old favourites,
take a picture and store it in a fashion

2. Implement a system: Organize the
remaining items by clothing type

Buying a New Home: The importance of getting your lawyer

Believe it or not, it is common
practice for home buyers to sign an
Agreement of Purchase and Sale
and after the fact, provide it to their
lawyer for review. Some don't even
go through this process, thinking
that since the contracts are 'similar'
for all those buying from the same
builder, then it must somehow be
'okay'.
Just as you would include a
condition for obtaining financing,
ensure to include a lawyer's review
condition with a specific date. Most
importantly, take the agreement to
your lawyer for review as soon as
possible.
These agreements are
lengthy and you should give your
lawyer adequate time to review the
agreement. Do not wait until the
last day of the conditional period to
contact your lawyer.
Make sure to actually read the
agreement. It is vital that you as the
purchaser familiarize yourself with
what's in the agreement. As much
as your lawyer is knowledgeable
about the law, they were simply not
present when you were discussing

the purchase with a sales agent. You
might be under the assumption that
certain items, extras or arrangements
have been spelt out in the agreement,
while they were simply omitted.
Almost all contracts have a clause
stating that what is not included in

in the purchase price or you might
have been offered a certain bonus
package for purchasing a particular

(NC) Exercise is a key component
in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If
you are new to daily workouts, or
if you are just looking to ramp up
your existing routine, there are a few
things you might consider to achieve
success.
“Two of the most important first
steps are to set a realistic goal followed
by a plan to achieve that goal,” says
Stephanie Dupuis, National Director
of Personal Training with GoodLife
Fitness Clubs. “Being realistic will
help make a positive impact on your
overall health, but it also needs to
fit into your existing lifestyle. The
goal should be something you can
commit to.”

program, don’t overdo it. Tackle one

says. “Your warm up and cool down
are important for safety. A warm up
doesn’t have to be long—it can be
five to ten minutes. That short warmup will increase blood flow to your
muscles and help reduce your risk of
injury.”
After your workout, a proper cool
down is equally important. Dupuis
recommends, “Gradually reduce
the intensity and speed of your
activity in preparation for stopping
your workout.” A proper cool down
allows your heart rate to return to
normal and can help prevent you
from feeling dizzy or fainting.
When you first begin working out
it’s not uncommon for your muscles to
ache a little bit—not severe or sharp
pain, but a small amount of tension.
Soreness comes from using muscles
that haven’t been used in a while. It’s
normal to feel some soreness 24 to
48 hours after exercising. It will go
away. To sooth sore muscles Dupuis
suggests that you keep moving the
day after you work out. Even going
for a walk can help. Remaining still
will cause soreness to set in.
Most importantly, remember
that everyone starts somewhere. If
you need help, don’t be afraid to
reach out to a professional. Dupuis
advises, “Work at your own level and
incorporate things you like into your
workout. Exercise should be fun.”
