Spring newsletter 2014 Spring is always a busy time of year on the farms. Spring bulbs are now looking glorious and the children are planting seeds, ready for the growing season. The animals are enjoying the first signs of fresh grass and longer days. The farms are busy with animal births, too. At Nethercott we are hatching goslings after an incubator was donated earlier in the year in memory of one of our most loyal supporters, Peter Bell. The children will enjoy looking after the geese at all stages of their development. The fields at Treginnis are all activity, as spring brings an abundance of lambs. Schools have been there every step of the way, from birth onwards, helping to feed them, ensuring they are all healthy and watching them bouncing around. At Wick Court, the annual Wassail marked the start of the year and a great time was had by all. As well as the arrival of spring lambs, Wick Court saw the first calving from their small loan herd. Children from a school in Catford watched as John and Mel expertly helped the cow produce a fine, healthy calf. Our alumni have been active this Spring as well. Sally visited Nethercott as a child in 2002 - with her primary school from Middlesex - and is now working on a farm. She ordered herself a new Farms for City Children t-shirt in preparation for the lambing season. She, too, has a busy time ahead! We have also been working hard on the launch of our new website. We still have the same web address, it is a great place to catch up with all of the farm news, fundraising news, events and much more! Here are our favourite quotes that put a smile on our faces: “I’ve loved every minute, and this minute right now it the best.” “I love the goats. They are soft and friendly and I stroked them and milked them.” “Children came running into the boot room at the end of their shift bursting with facts and beaming smiles!” Children have a great time baking at our farms so we thought we would share Wick Court's bread roll recipe. Perfect for your bacon butty! 3) Knead for ten minutes by hand You will need: 500g strong white flour 1 tablespoon oil 1 teaspoon salt 1 sachet dried yeast ½ pint (275 ml) warm water 6) Bake in oven for 30 minutes at 230˚C 4) Shape the dough and place on a baking tray (12 – 15 rolls) 5) Leave in a warm place to prove Method: 1) In a large bowl mix together the flour, salt, oil and yeast 2) Stir in the water and mix to a soft dough Thank you to our fantastic fundraisers! Ros walked the twelve bridges of London to celebrate her birthday and raise money for Farms for City Children. She raised an amazing £955 and had a brilliant time. With friends and family supporting her, Ros even walked back home (donning one of the best lamby hats we've seen for a long time!). It is the season of births, new beginnings and some endings, too. We wish Ana Green all the very best as she moves on from her post at Treginnis after a productive two years in charge. Ana introduced some fantastic new ideas, including the John Muir Award, which is all about exploring the wild landscape of the Pembrokeshire coast. As soon as she arrived, Ana rolled up her sleeves to get cooking with the children and, to the delight of her cooks, organised a Before Christmas, The Grosvenor Group held a �Grosvenor’s Got Talent’ night in aid of Farms for City much-needed new kitchen as well. Children. Grosvenor staff were joined by Joanna Lumley, After more than ten years working for this fantastic charity, I am also moving members of the War Horse cast and some of the Farms on to new and exciting challenges. It has been a pleasure and an honour to for City Children team. Joey from War Horse made an work with the charity’s staff, farmer partners and Trustees; I stand in awe of amazing guest appearance too. the skilled and dedicated teachers that accompany the children to the farms.
