1. Choose your favourite scene from the novel so far. Choose a character
involved in that scene and write a diary entry from their point of
view. You should choose your language carefully to recreate their
specific voice.
2. Choose a chapter and write an alternative ending. Share this with a
friend, parent or carer and discuss why you made the changes you
have made.
3. Research the author’s life and where she found the inspiration to tell
the story.
4. Read another novel by Susan Hill and discuss your thoughts and
feelings about it.

the novel – remember to use a full range of punctuation and varied
sentence types for effect.

include details about the house from the point of view of someone
