CONTRIBUTION TO LICHEN RECORDS FROM ANTALYA
PROVINCE (GÜZELÇAM YAYLASI))
Gülşah ÇOBANOĞLUi, Mustafa YAVUZii
KEY WORDS: Lichenized fungi, Antalya, Turkey.
ABSTRACT
A list of 79 lichen taxa is reported from Güzelçam Yaylası in the province of Antalya. 4
taxa are new records for the province.
INTRODUCTION
The knowledge of the distribution of lichens in many provinces in Turkey is still
insufficient. Records from the province of Antalya are quite a lot (PISUT 1970, JOHN 1992,
1996; VEZDA 1996; NIMIS & JOHN 1998; SCHINDLER 1998; JOHN et al. 2000; BREUSS
& JOHN 2004; ÇOBANOĞLU & SEVGI 2006), however, no earlier records particularly from
Güzelçam Yaylası. The present contribution is the first lichenological survey in the area. The
collection referred to this paper was reported as a consequence of one-day excursion to
“Güzelçam Yaylası” made by Turkish Lichenological Association in 2005.
The study area in the province of Antalya is situated in the Mediterranean Region of
Turkey (Figure 1). According to data from Antalya Meteorological Station, the climate is
typical Mediterranean. The average annual mean temperature is 18.6 C° and annual
precipitation is about 1039 mm (Figure 2).
MATERIALS AND METHODS
This study is based on specimens collected by the authors during a daily excursion of
Turkish Lichenological Association (TLT) to GÜZELÇAM YAYLASI in 2005. The lichen
material was collected from two localities on different substrates including all epiphytic,
saxicolous, terricolous and surprisingly pine cones.
The taxa on cone are documented in YAVUZ & ÇOBANOĞLU (2007). The locality
information is given below.

The specimens determined by applying light microscopy and chemical spot tests were
identified with the aid of flora books and identification keys (CLAUZADE & ROUX, 1985;
PURVIS et al., 1992; WIRTH, 1995). The material is preserved in the herbarium of the Faculty
of Science and Arts, Marmara University, Istanbul (MUFE).

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Seventy-nine lichen taxa are listed alphabetically. 4 taxa are new for Antalya. An
asterisk (*) indicates the new records for the province of Antalya. The herbarium numbers
pertain to GÜLŞAH ÇOBANOĞLU (G.Ç.) in MUFE.
The names of authors are abbreviated according to BRUMMITT & POWELL (1992).
The nomenclature follows the recent literature (BLANCO et al., 2004).
Below are the abbreviations used for substrates data in the list of taxa: PC: Pine
Cones, SR: Siliceous Rocks, CR: Calcareous Rocks, CS: Calcareous Soil, WM: With Mosses

DISCUSSION
The list includes 79 taxa (78 species and 1 subspecies) belonging to 41 genera. Four
taxa are new for the province of Antalya. The most frequent genera within the study area are
Lecanora (represented by 8 species), Caloplaca (represented by 5 species) and Physcia
(represented by 4 species).
The lichen composition in both collecting sites is almost similar to each other. Fortytwo taxa were recorded from 1. collecting site and 54 from 2. collecting site while 17 taxa are
common in both sites.
As significant forest vegetation is present in the study area, the epiphytic taxa are
rather rich and higher in number with sum of 62.03 % in the both sites scattered on Cedrus
libani and Pinus brutia (Figure 3). The collected saxicolous taxa follow the epiphytes with
37.97 % of the whole. Physconia perisidiosa was recorded as the only terricolous species (1.27
%) nearby mosses. Substrate preferences of the taxa are comparatively given below in
percentages. The total number of corticolous taxa is higher on Pinus brutia (44.30 %) than on
Cedrus libani (16.46 %). The taxa live-on “pine cones”, firstly recorded in Turkey, are common
in the area with 21.52 % of the all. The number of taxa on calcareous rocks (30.38 %) is quite
more than those on siliceous rocks (11.39 %); only three taxa are common on both calcareous
and siliceous substrates. The relation between substrate types and the taxa correspond with the
literature.
