FORGIVENESS SUNDAY,(SUNDAY MARCH 17, 2013) Also called Cheese fare Sunday, is the final day of pre-Lent. It is the Sunday after Meat fare Sunday and the Sunday before the Sunday of Orthodoxy. On this last Sunday before Great Lent, the last day that traditionally Orthodox Christians eat dairy products until Easter, the Church remembers the expulsion expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise, as the icon above illustrates. God commanded them to fast from the fruit of a tree (Gen. 2:16), but they did not obey. In this way Adam and Eve and their descendants became heirs of death and corruption. On Forgiveness Sunday many attend Forgiveness Vespers on the eve of Great Lent. They hear on the Lord's teaching about fasting and forgiveness and enter the season of the fast forgiving one another so that God will forgive them. If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your heavenly Father forgive you your trespasses (Matthew 6:14). Κυριακή της Ορθοδοξίας (Κυριακή, Μαρτίου 17, 2013) Καλείται επίσης και η Κυριακή της Τυρινής, η τελευταία Κυριακή του Τριωδίου, η Κυριακή πριν την Καθαρά Δευτέρα. Η Σημασία της Εορτής. Αυτή τη Κυριακή η εκκλησία μας μνημονεύει τον εξορισμό των πρωτοπλάστων, του Αδάμ και της Εύας από τον Κήπο της Εδέμ, τον παράδεισο, όπως εικονίζεται στο εξώφυλλο αυτού του μηνιαίου δελτίου. Ο θεός πρόσταξε τους πρωτοπλάστους να μην φάγουν το φρούτο ενός δέντρου. (Γεν. 2:16). Οι πρωτόπλαστοι παράκουσαν την εντολή του Θεού. Μ’ αυτό τον τρόπο οι πρωτόπλαστοι και εμείς, οι απόγονοι των, γίναμε κληρονόμοι του θανάτου και της φθοράς. Είναι η τελευταία ημέρα που παραδοσιακά ο κάθε ορθόδοξος χριστιανός τρώει γαλακτικά τρόφιμα αφού έχει σταματήσει πλέον να τρώγει και τα κρεατώδεις τρόφιμα έως το Πάσχα. Αυτή τη Κυριακή η εκκλησία προσφέρει την ακολουθία του Εσπερινού της Συγχωρήσεως. Εμείς κατ’ οικονομία θα έχουμε τον Εσπερινό το απόγευμα της Καθοράς Δευτέρας. Τα διαβάσματα που διαβάζουμε, μας διδάσκουν του Κυρίου το θέλημα περί νηστείας και συγχωρήσεως, καθώς προχωρούμε στη Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή, συγχωρώντας ο ένας τον άλλον για να μας συγχωρήσεως ο Θεός. Sarantis Loulakis My dear brothers and sisters in Lord Jesus, greetings and blessings in Christ, our God! The New Year is approaching its third month already, the month of March. March is a month that is always being associated in the Church Calendar as the month when the Great Lent begins and as the saying goes, “March is never out of Great Lent!” It is fitting then to wish all of you a very happy and blessed Great Lent. Kali Sarakosti. Kali dynamis! As we associate March with lent, so we also associate lent with fasting. Lent is the period when all Orthodox faithful fast more than any other time throughout the year. In doing so, they hope that they might celebrate the Holy Resurrection with pure heart while hoping for eternal salvation in Christ, our Lord. Many people reflect that fasting has to do everything with food, with what we eat; avoiding eating meat or something else. True fasting, however, does not pertain to food alone, but more importantly we may fast by dedicating time in prayer, alms-giving, as we abstain from certain foods. One very important teaching of fasting that is being ignored by the faithful is to forgive those who have done wrong to us. Overall, forgiveness seems hard to be offered. It is a difficult task. It’s hard to do. Although, this may be true, forgiveness must be offered unconditionally to others. There are times when we hurt others due to our own (de)faults knowing or not. We say: "It's not my fault what happened." It creates a prevailing attitude in our culture. In order to avoid responsibility for our own actions, (not to forgive) we blame others, i.e., some would say "I wouldn't yell at my kids so much if my own parents had loved me more" or "I wouldn't speak unkindly about my boss if I was showed some respect." Resentment wells up until the victim is blind to everything except how his life is impacted by someone else's hurtful deeds. Then casting blame is easy! But God has a challenge for believers: Forgive those who done you wrong. The Lord’s Prayer (Our Father who are in heaven) states several of God’s duties - to provide for us, to protect us, to make us holy, to feed us and to forgive us, but lists only one for believers: to forgive debtors. The metaphor of debt describes sin well. A wronged person often feels that the responsible party owes something, such as an apology or compensation. (Mosaic Law) But by showing mercy (forgive unconditionally) to one who has sinned, we stamp his or her obligation to us “paid in full,” and so at the same time our own from God Himself. Sometimes our wounds are so deep that forgiveness does not come easily. Remember that Jesus Christ bears the scars of others’ sins, too, and His Holy Spirit enables us to carry out this difficult task. While our debtor may have done nothing to deserve our forgiveness, choose to give it anyway, just as Jesus Christ did for us. When God forgives, He forgets our wrong doings. This doesn’t mean that sins magically cease to exist. Instead, the Lord refuses to use past wrongs as a reason of our judgment. He set the pattern of debt cancellation, and we are to follow His example (Matt 6:15). My beloved, it is my fervent prayer that as we will be living the period of Great Lent, let us all come to terms with our innerself and change the attitude of fasting, not only to include the foods, but let’s us in prayer and alms-giving forgive those who have wrong us. Let us forgive their “debt” as the Lord will forgive ours. Then we will have a true meaningful fasting. Our God then will accept our gifts offered to Him, since He said: "Go and forgive your brother and then come and offer me your gifts.” On behalf of Presvytera Norma and my family I wish to extend to all of you and yours a blessed Sarakosti! Το νέο έτος πλησιάζει τον τρίτο μήνα του, τον Μάρτιο. Ο Μάρτιος είναι ένας μήνας που συνδέεται πάντα στο Εκκλησιαστικό ημερολόγιο να συμπεριλαμβάνει τη Μεγάλη Σαρακοστή, όπως λένε «Λείπει ο Μάρτης από την Σαρακοστή;» Αρμόζει λοιπόν στη συνέχεια να ευχηθώ σ’ όλους σας μια ταπεινή και ευλογημένη Σαρακοστή. Καλή και ταπεινή νηστεία. Καλή Δύναμις! Αδελφοί, όπως έχουμε συνδέσει τον Μάρτιο με τη Σαρακοστή, έτσι έχουμε επίσης συνδέσει τη Σαρακοστή με την νηστεία. Αυτή είναι η περίοδος που οι Ορθόδοξοι πιστοί νηστεύουν πολύ περισσότερο από κάθε άλλη περίοδο του χρόνου, προκειμένου να είναι σε θέση να ζήσουν τη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα με ταπεινοφροσύνη όσο το δυνατόν. Μ’ αυτό τον τρόπο, ελπίζουμε ότι θα μπορέσουμε να γιορτάσουμε το Άγιο Πάσχα με καθαρή καρδιά, ελπίζοντας για την αιώνια σωτηρία μας με τον Χριστό, τον Κύριον μας. Πολλοί πιστοί αντικατοπτρίζουν την νηστεία να γίνεται μόνο με τα τρόφιμα, με το τι θα φάμε, αποφεύγοντας την κατανάλωση κρέατος, ή κάτι άλλο. Η πραγματική νηστεία, ωστόσο, δεν ασκείται με τα τρόφιμα μόνο, αλλά το πιό σημαντικό είναι να αφιερώσουμε τον χρόνο μας στη προσευχή και ελεημοσύνη, καθώς απέχουμε από συγκεκριμένες τροφές. Ένα πολύ σημαντικό συστατικό μέλος της νηστείας που αμελείται πάρα πολύ είναι η συγχώρεση σ’ αυτούς που μας έβλαψαν. Συνολικά η συγχώρεση φαίνεται ότι είναι δύσκολη να δοθεί. Αν και, αυτό μπορεί να ισχύει, η συγχώρεσης πρέπει να χορηγείται σ’ άλλους. Καθώς είναι φορές που βλάπτουμε άλλους, γνωρίζοντας ή μη γνωρίζοντας. Ακούγετε να λέμε: «Δεν είναι δικό μου λάθος, δεν φταίω εγώ.» Προκειμένου να αποφύγουμε την ευθύνη των πράξεών μας, φταίμε άλλους. Μερικοί λέγουν "Δεν θα φώναζα στα παιδιά μου τόσο πολύ αν οι γονείς μου μ’ είχαν αγαπήσει περισσότερο", ή «Δεν θα φερνόμουν τόσο άσχημα στο αφεντικό μου αν μου έδειχνε λίγο σεβασμό». Η δυσαρέσκεια ξεχειλίζει τόσο πολύ μέχρι που το θύμα τυφλώνεται και να μην βλέπει πλέον καθαρά πώς η ζωή του επηρεάζεται από τις κακοποιήσεις κάποιου άλλου. Έτσι το βρίσκουμε εύκολο να φταίμε όλους. Το φταίξιμο είναι εύκολο . Αλλά, ο Θεός προσκαλεί (εντολή) τους πιστούς: Να συγχωρούμε όλους! Η Κυριακή προσευχή, (Πάτερ ημών ο εν τοις ουρανοίς) αναφέρει πολλά καθήκοντα του Θεού – όπως να προβλέπει για την προστασία μας, να μας κάνει άγιους, και να μας συγχωρεί, αλλά απαριθμεί μόνο ένα για τους πιστούς: Να συγχωρούμε τους «οφειλέτες». Η μεταφορά του χρέους περιγράφει καλά την αμαρτία. Το ζημιωθέν πρόσωπο αισθάνεται συχνά ότι ο «οφειλέτης» μας οφείλει κάτι, όπως μια συγγνώμη, ή αποζημίωση. Όμως δείχνοντας έλεος σε κάποιον που μας έχει βλάψει, του σφραγίζουμε τη εξόφληση του, και έτσι λαμβάνουμε από τον Θεό τη δική μας. Μερικές φορές οι πληγές μας είναι τόσο βαθιά που η συγχώρεση δεν έρχεται εύκολα. Ας μην ξεχνούμε ότι ο Χριστός φέρει τα σημάδια των αμαρτιών ΟΛΛΩΝ μας και το Άγιο Πνεύμα βοηθεί στους πιστούς να πραγματοποιήσουν το δύσκολο αυτό έργο. Ίσως η καρδιά μας να μας ψιθυρίζει και να λέει ότι δεν αξίζει στον «οφειλέτη» μας η συγχώρηση, πρέπει όμως να τη δώσουμε, ούτως ή άλλως, ακριβώς όπως έκανε ο Χριστός σε μας. Όταν ο Θεός συγχωρεί, ξεχνά όλες τις αμαρτίες μας. Αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι οι αμαρτίες μαγικά παύουν να υπάρχουν. Ο Θεός όμως ασχέτως αρνείται να χρησιμοποιήσει τις αμαρτίες του παρελθού μας τη ημέρα της κρίσεως. Το έκανε χρέος να ακολουθήσουμε το παράδειγμά του (Ματ 6:15). Αγαπητοί μου αδελφοί, είναι η ένθερμη προσευχή μου καθώς βιώνουμε αυτή τη μεγάλη περίοδο της Σαρακοστής να εξετάσουμε τον εσωτερικό εαυτό μας, να συμβιβαστούμε με τη ψυχή μας, και ν’ αλλάξουμε τη λανθασμένη στάση μας περί της νηστείας. Ωστόσο να περιλαμβάνει μαζί με τα τρόφιμα, την προσευχή, και την ελεημοσύνη δίνοντας την συγχώρηση σε όσους μας έχουν βλάψει. Κι ο Κύριος θα συγχωρήσει και τις δίκες μας. Upon the completion of the 40 days after the Resurrection of Christ, Ascension Thursday, these sheets are returned to the faithful and are to be kept in each person’s home. Upon the passing away of a loved one, it is traditional to take this sheet, which was once blessed by carrying the body of the Lord, and place it over our loved one on the day of his or her funeral. Ἐπειδή ὅμως αὐτή δέν εἶναι δυνατόν νά τηρηθεῖ στίς μεγάλες περιόδους τῶν νηστειῶν τοῦ ἐκκλησιαστικοῦ ἔτους, λόγῳ δύσκολων συνθηκῶν ζωῆς ἤ ἔλλειψης ζήλου, ἔχουν στήν πράξη ἐπινοηθεῖ διάφορεςδιευκολύνσεις, ὥστε νά εἶναι δυνατή ἡ ἐφαρμογή τῆς νηστείας ἀπό ὅλους τούς πιστούς. Στήν ἀρχαία ἐποχή οἱ χριστιανοί μετά τήν ἐνάτη ὥρα (3 μ.μ.) τῶν νηστήσιμων ἡμερῶν κατέλυαν μόνο νερό καί ψωμί. Σιγά-σιγά ὅμως ὄχι μόνο ἡ διάρκεια τῆς ὁλοκληρωτικῆς ἀποχῆς ἀπό τροφή περιορίστηκε στά συνηθισμένα καί ἄλλα εἴδη τροφῶν ἄρχισαν νά χρησιμοποιοῦνται, ὅπως οἱ καρποί, τά ὄσπρια, τά ὀστρακόδερμα. Μέσα στά πλαίσια αὐτά μπορεῖ νά κατανοηθεῖ καί τό ὅτι τρῶμε ἐλιές κατά τίς ἡμέρες πού δέν τρῶμε λάδι, καί αὐγοτάραχο (ταραμά) κατά τίς ἡμέρες πού ἀπέχουμε ἀπό ψάρια. Γιά τό πρῶτο μποροῦμε νά ἐπικαλεστοῦμε τό λόγο ὅτι οἱ ἐλιές τρώγονται ὡς καρπός, ἐνῶ ἡ ἀπαγόρευση τοῦ λαδιοῦ ἀφορᾶ στά φαγητά πού παρασκευάζονται μέ λάδι. Γιά τό δεύτερο ἡ δικαιολογία εἶναι λιγότερο εὔλογη, ἀφοῦ δέν ἰσχύει τό ἴδιο γιά τό γάλα ἤ τά αὐγά, ἀλλά καί αὐτά ἀπαγορεύονται κατά τίς νηστεῖες μας ὡς «καρπός… καί γεννήματα ὧν ἀπεχόμεθα» κατά τόν 56ο κανόνα τῆς Πενθέκτης Οἰκουμενικῆς Συνόδου. Υπαρχουν επιση και αλλοι λογοι που θα εξηγησουμε στο παροδοσιακο νηστησιμο γευμα της Καθαρς Δευτερας, 9 Μαρτίου. Page 8 Φεβρουάριος 2013 February 2013 Αγαπητοί μου φίλοι και ενορίτες της Αγίας Μαρκέλλας , Είναι με μεγάλη χαρά που γράφω αυτά τα λίγα λόγια μέσα από την καρδιά για να σας μεταφέρω την πρόοδο της αγαπημένης μας κοινότητάς μας, δεδομένου ότι αυτό είναι το πρώτο μήνυμά μου προς εσάς φέτος. Κατ ' αρχάς, θα ήθελα πάρα πολύ να ευχαριστήσω όλα τα μέλη του Κοινοτικού Συμβουλίου για τη επανεκλογή μου ως Πρόεδρος του Συμβουλίου για άλλη μια χρονιά. Όπως είμαι ευγνώμων για την εμπιστοσύνη τους σε μένα, έτσι πιστεύω ότι όλοι μας, ως Μέλη του Συμβουλίου ευθυνόμαστε όχι μόνο για τη διατήρηση, αλλά και τη βελτίωση της Κοινότητας μας σε υψηλότερα επίπεδα προόδου και επιτυχίας. Επίσης είναι πεποίθησή μου ότι η πρόοδος της Κοινότητας μας και η επανεκλογή μου είναι το αποτέλεσμα συνεργασίας και της υποστήριξής ΣΑΣ. Περαιτέρω, είμαι ευγνώμων για την εγκάρδια υποστήριξη, καθοδήγηση και συνεργασία που λαμβάνω από τον πνευματικό ηγέτη, πατέρα Σαράντη. Καθώς το νέο κτήριο της εκκλησίας μας έχει σχεδόν ολοκληρωθεί, είμαι υπέρ ενθουσιασμένος που βλέπω ότι τα προγράμματα της Κοινότητας μας ζωντανεύουν και καρποφορούν στις προσπάθειές τους, όπως και η τόσο μεγάλη επιτυχία της λαχειοφόρου της Πρωτοχρονιάς μαζί με τη χοροεσπερίδα μας. Παραμένω ευγνώμων στη αγάπη και υπεράσπιση σας. Επιπλέον, καθώς σας μεταδίδω αυτά τα λόγια, το Κοινοτικό Συμβούλιο κάνει μεγάλες προετοιμασίες για να έχουμε τα επίσημα εγκαίνια της κοινωνικής αίθουσας το Σάββατο, 9 Μαρτίου 2013, με εκδήλωση, δείπνο με αποκριάτικο γλέντι και χορό που είχε αναβληθεί τον Νοέμβριο λόγω των καιρικών συνθηκών. First, I wish so much to thank all the Members of the Parish Council for re-electing me as President of the Parish Council for another year. As I am grateful for their trust in me, I also do feel that all of us as Parish Council Members are responsible not only to maintain, but improve as well our beloved community to higher levels of development and success. It is also my belief that the progress of our community and my re-election is the product of YOUR cooperation and support. Η Καθαρά Δευτέρα ονομάστηκε έτσι γιατί οι Χριστιανοί “καθαρίζονταν” πνευματικά και σωματικά. Είναι μέρα νηστείας αλλά και μέρα αργίας για τους Χριστιανούς. Η νηστεία διαρκεί για 40 μέρες, όσες ήταν και οι μέρες νηστείας του Χριστού στην έρημο. Την Καθαρά Δευτέρα συνηθίζεται να τρώγεται λαγάνα (άζυμο ψωμί που παρασκευάζεται μόνο εκείνη τη μέρα),ταραμάς και άλλα νηστίσιμα φαγώσιμα, κυρίως λαχανικά, όπως και φασολάδα χωρίς λάδι. Από παλιά η Καθαρή Δευτέρα, πέρασε στην συνείδηση του λαού, σαν μέρα καθαρμού. Οι βυζαντινοί, την Καθαρή Δευτέρα την ονόμαζαν Απόθεση -Απόδοση, και τελούσαν δρώμενα. Τραγουδούσαν σχετικά άσματα, από τα οποία έχουν σωθεί μικρά μέρη μέχρι στις μέρες μας. Κούλουμα ονομάζεται η καθαροδευτεριάτικη έξοδος στην εξοχή και το πέταγμα του αετού. Οι χριστιανοί, παρέες βγαίνουν στην εξοχή, παίρνοντας μαζί τους νηστίσιμα φαγητά, και το ρίχνουν στην διασκέδαση και τον χορό. Εμείς εδώ στη κοινότητα μας θα εορτάσουμε τη Καθαρά Δευτέρα με το Μέγα Απόδειπνο και με νηστίσιμο γεύμα, παρασκευασμένο από όλους μας που θα μοιραστούμε έτσι με τη ευλογία του Κυρίου μας ως αδέλφια στη κοινοτική αίθουσα μας. Η κάθε οικογένεια καλείτε να παρασκευάσει κάτι νηστίσιμο τουλάχιστο να μοιράσει για δέκα άτομα η περισσότερα. Πρόγραμμα Καθαρής Δευτέρας. Απόδειπνο 6μμ – 7μμ Κατήχησης 7:15- 7:25 Αποκριάτικο Νηστίσιμο γεύμα 7:30μμ – 9:00μμ Page 12 HOW TO MAKE KOLYVA 1 cup shelled heat (I buy mine from Nature’s) 1/8 cup granulated sugar ¼ cup finely chopped walnuts ¼ cup slivered almonds ½ cup white raisins ½ tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. coriander ½ cup powdered sugar ½ cup finely ground zwieback toast Optional: seeds of ½ a pomegranate, ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley, ¼ cup pine nuts Decoration: slivered almonds, white candied almonds (Jordan almonds or Koufeta), large silver dragees (silver koufeta). Also pre-made Crosses & Initials are available at Logos Bookstore. ½ tsp. cumin Cover the wheat with water and soak overnight. Drain and rinse. Cover with 1 quart water in a large pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered several hours, keeping the wheat covered with water and stirring occasionally, until wheat becomes puffy and tender. (Cooking time varies with time of soaking.) Drain in a colander, rinse, and drain again. Spread the wheat out on a smooth dish towel to dry overnight. (If desired, burn a kandili/ vigil lamp beside the wheat as it dries.)Prepare all other ingredients but do not assembly until the day of the service to prevent mush like texture. On the day of the service light a censer and kandili/vigil lamp while making the kollyva (if there are two people, have one read prayers while the other prepares… if one person, I put on a CD of liturgical music). Combine all the ingredients except the powdered sugar, zwieback crumbs, and decorations. There are two ways to “present” your kollyva… on a tray or in a bowl. On a tray… cover tray with wax paper. Put combined mixture on tray and mold into a heaping mound toward the center, pressing it smooth. In a bowl… pour combined mixture into a bowl. Press it smooth on the top.Spread crumbs evenly over the top, making sure the wheat is thoroughly covered, and press down. (This layer keeps the wheat mixture from bleeding through to the top layer of powdered sugar.) Sift powdered sugar over the mound or bowl and press smooth with wax paper.Make a cross in the center with the koufeta or silver dragees For a memorial service (commemorating one person)… use slivered almonds to form the initial of the first name of the deceased on the left side of the cross and the initial of the last name on the right. For a Saturday of Souls service, do not put initials of the deceased since kollyva for Saturday of Souls is generally made for more than one person.
