From the Principal - Dr George Panagopoulos Feast of the Annunciation and Greek Independence Day: A National Day of Celebration of Democracy. On the 25th March we celebrated the Feast of the Annunciation of Our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos. The Feast commemorates the announcement by the Archangel Gabriel to Mary that our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, the Son of God, would become Mother of Jesus Christ. In addition, we also celebrated the anniversary of the beginning of the struggle for independence of the Hellenic Republic in 1821. On this day, it is fitting that we reflect on the enormous contributions the Greek people have made to humanity. I wish to thank all parents and students who participated in the planned events which have inherent educational value and are intrinsic components of the College’s Orthodox ethos and culture. «ΖΗΤΩ Η ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ» – “LONG LIVE FREEDOM” Parent Teacher Acquaintance Evenings I wish to thanks all parents who attended the recently held Parent Teacher Acquaintance Evenings which have served to provide an ideal opportunity for parents and staff to discuss important issues regarding the curriculum as well as the planned activities that will serve to support students in all aspects of learning. The Acquaintance evenings further serve to identify identification strategies through which teachers, parents and students can further improve ways of working together as they individually and collectively pursue the common goal of ensuring that each student reaches their full potential. School Zones I wish to remind parents that there is currently a 25 km/h school zone directly outside the Junior Campus and Senior Campus in Rose Street. This school zones ensure that school zones are effective and relevant to allow motorists to slow down to 25 km/h if a child is anywhere within the zone. In light of this, we request that all parents adhere to the 25 km/h zone as well as to the various parking restrictions imposed by the Council. Οι μαθητές είχαν την ευκαιρία να μυηθούν στους βασικότερους ρυθμούς κιόνων (Κορινθιακό, Ιωνικό, Δωρικό) που κοσμούν αρκετά κτήρια της Αδελαΐδας, όπως τον Άρειο Πάγο, τα Δικαστήρια, τη Βουλή, την Εθνική Πινακοθήκη. Φρατζής Μαρτίου έλαβε χώρα εορτασμός στο Κολλέγιό μας με τη Συντονιστής Τμήματος Ελληνικών Σπουδών συμμετοχή όλων των μαθητών μας και του διδακτικού προσωπικού. Τονίστηκε ιδιαίτερα ο διπλός χαρακτήρας ΦΩΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΕΣ της εορτής, δηλαδή η θρησκευτική και η εθνική της ΑΠΟ ΤΙΣ ΠΑΡΑΠΑΝΩ ΕΚΔΗΛΩΣΕΙΣ διάσταση. Εκτός του θρησκευτικού μέρους, ο εορτασμός μας ήταν ένα αφιέρωμα στους «Ήρωες και στις ηρωίδες του 1821». Την Κυριακή 25 Μαρτίου τελέστηκε η δοξολογία για την Εθνική μας Εορτή στον Ιερό Ναό του Αγίου Γεωργίου με ικανοποιητική αντιπροσώπευση από το Κολλέγιό μας. Στη συνέχεια συναντηθήκαμε στο Μνημείο του Αγνώστου Στρατιώτη όπου έλαβε χώρα η επιμνημόσυνη δέηση, η κατάθεση στεφάνων και η μαθητική παρέλαση. Οι εθνικές και θρησκευτικές μας γιορτές αποτελούν σημαντικό και αναπόσπαστο μέρος της σχολικής μας πράξης και αποτελεί υποχρέωση των μαθητών και των καθηγητών να βιώνουν αυτές τις ευκαιρίες που αποδεικνύουν και επιβεβαιώνουν την ταυτότητα του Κολλεγίου μας. Απευθύνω θερμά συγχαρητήρια στους μαθητές και στις μαθήτριες που τίμησαν τις παραπάνω εορταστικές εκδηλώσεις και προσκαλούμε όλους τους μαθητές μας να δίνουν το παρόν σε μελλοντικούς παρόμοιους εορτασμούς. Michael Griffin Visit On Wednesday 8th of February 7K was lucky to have a visit from Professor Michael Griffin. Mr. Griffin talked about three important words repetition, chunking and slow. One amazing fact that he told the class was that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert. Michael Griffin played Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 for us. Mr Griffin has played in one of the most famous and expensive hotels in the world. It is called the Burjalarab in Dubai. Year 5 Excursion to the Museum In week 8 the Year 5 classes went to the Museum to see the Rock & Mineral Collection. We saw rocks changing colour, crystal as thin as paper, a meteorite rock from the planet Mars, a lava bomb and calcite. We passed some rocks around. These rocks were quartz, magnetite, the lava bomb and many others. We looked at an ice wall and an astronaut suit. The highlight of the excursion was discussing with students our own age and of an Islamic background, what issues they face being Muslim and the ways in which they practice their faith. Overall, it was an interesting and eyeopening experience which has helped us understand Islam and Muslims much better. We had a lot of fun at the Museum looking at the rocks and some other fossils. It’s one of Australia’s biggest fundraising events. Over 125,000 people across the country participated to raise funds for people living with a blood cancer. A number of teachers shaved their beards off at a special assembly in the afternoon. Our students raised $1000 in support of the Leukaemia Foundation.
