DEPARTMENT OF ELDERLY CARE & STROKE
The department currently has

Older Persons Mental Health Liaison Team
Secretarial staff currently consists of 4 grade 4 secretaries. The new consultant will be allocated appropriate
secretarial support.
Elderly Care and Stroke provide services on the Stafford Site from Ward 10, (21 bedded Older Persons ward),
Acute Stroke Unit (10 beds) and on the Cannock Site from Fairoak (28 bedded Unit: 16 stroke rehab,4 older
people,6 orthogeriatric and 2 for rheumatology.). Two of the consultants take it in turn to manage ward 10 on
a 2 weekly rota.
The department runs TIA Clinics, rapid access clinics (hot clinics) and Falls clinics.
Development is underway with the introduction of a comprehensive geriatric assessment within the Acute
Medical Unit and outreach services to the General Medical wards. The post holder with the support of other
colleagues in elderly care will be expected to develop this service further.
Daily input to Trauma & Orthopaedics is also in place.
There is an agreed local health economy clinical strategy for the care of the Frail Elderly which will be
implemented over the next few years with an emphasis on intensive reablement, structured discharge and

anticipatory care. The post holder will play a key role in taking forward new ways of working in support of this
strategy.
THE POST
The post holder will play a pivotal role in the management and further development of Elderly Care in the
Trust. The post holder will work closely with the senior clinical managers and the administrative staff of the
Acute Care Directorate to continue the development of an efficient, high quality service for patients
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
a. To take forward the further development of services within the Department.
b. To undertake the duties outlined in the Consultant job plan, including out-patient clinics, ward referrals and
ward rounds.
c. To undertake supervision of teaching and training junior medical staff, attached nursing staff, medical
students and interested primary care colleagues.
d. To participate in a regular programme of medical audit.
e. To cover the Elderly Care/Stroke Department during periods of Colleagues’ annual or study leave.
f. To participate in the affairs of the Acute Care Directorate and the Department of Elderly Care/Stroke.
g. To develop a special interest.
h. Actively contribute to the development of closer working relationships with primary care in the area. The
delivery of Elderly care services is undergoing great change throughout the country and, in common with many
Acute Trusts; from time to time there may well be a need to review the working practices of the Elderly Care
Physicians in order to provide the best care to patients.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
The successful appointee will be employed by the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, subject to the
national Terms and Conditions as per the new Consultant Contract (2003) as amended from time to time. They
will be required to have and maintain full registration with the General Medical Council. The appointee will
participate in appraisal and revalidation. This job description is not exhaustive and may be updated from time
to time, with consultation, as the needs of the service dictate. A Local Medical Negotiating Committee is in
place and any revised Terms and Conditions will be negotiated within that Committee.
SALARY
In accordance with the Locum Consultant salary scale, currently ranging from £74,504 to £100,446 per annum
based on 10 Programmed-Activities. The post comprises 10 Programmed Activities per week in accordance
with the Consultants Contract 2003.
ANNUAL LEAVE
There is an Annual Leave entitlement of 32 working days and 8 Public Holidays. All requests for Annual Leave
will require a minimum of 6 weeks notice to the Directorate.
