Where Christ is, there is His Church. “The Church is an earthly heaven in which the super-celestial God dwells and walks about. It represents the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Christ. It is glorified more than the tabernacle of the witness of Moses, in which are the mercy-seat and the Holy of Holies. It is prefigured in the patriarchs, foretold by the prophets, founded in the apostles, adorned by the hierarchs, and fulfilled in the martyrs” (St. Germanus of Constantinople). For, this Church is His Mystical Body, the Ark of Salvation, and the life of the Holy Consubstantial and Undivided Trinity in our very midst. No power in heaven, on earth or under the earth can subvert and overcome the Church. St. Athanasius says: “True is the word, firm is the promise. The Church is insurmountable, even if hell itself were moved, and the rulers of darkness summoned turmoil.” Her mission in this world to bring us into the tranquil harbor of heaven will not be denied. Because of this let us never separate ourselves from the Church. Let it be our constant enterprise to run to the Church in order to seek God’s forgiveness, and learn to live a life worthy of our calling “with all humility and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:2). I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. The ladies of the Philoptochos were very busy during the month of December. As every year, the Philoptochos sponsored our Annual Christmas Card. Alexandra Tsaganos and her committee worked very hard throughout the months of November and December collecting names, getting them to the printer and mailing them to all of us. I thank them and all of you for being included. The money we raised goes to our various charities. The ladies of the Philoptochos took time out of their busy schedule to celebrate the season. Our annual Christmas luncheon was held on Saturday, December 11th at the Mendenhall Inn. Pauline Snell and her committee did a great job. The food was delicious and the company great. We sang Christmas carols and visited with friends. I would like to thank Fr. Costa, Fr. Jerry, Fr. Stamatis, Fr. George and their Presbyteres for making the event extra special by joining us. Kai tou hronou! The next day, Sunday, December 12th, we held our monthly Board meeting. We discussed the events for the end of the year and the beginning of the next. Our ladies also baked the Christmas bread (Christopsomo) on Tuesday, December 14th. I would like to thank all the ladies who gave of their time and especially Olympia Kledaras who took orders and Vickie Karakasidis who ordered our supplies. I would also like to thank all the parishioners who bought our delicious bread. (picture below) Our final event for December was our Communion Sunday held on December 19th. I would like to thank all the ladies who made the breakfast for the children of our community and brought items for the coffee hour that was served for the whole community. I would also like to thank the Sunday School teachers for serving and helping clean up. As our calendars turn to January, I’d like to give you some dates to keep in mind. The first event of the new year will be Vasilopita Sunday. This will be held on January 9th. Ladies, please remember to bring in your vasilopites. We will also be passing a tray that day to help with the needs of Saint Basil Academy. Our January Board meeting will take place on Sunday, January 16th after the coffee hour in our room on the balcony. The General meeting will take place on Saturday, January 22nd at 11:00 am. This meeting will be our Annual soup meeting, please join us. Have a wonderful January. Fountzoulas Σπρεξέο γεληέο Lucky generations Οκνινγνπκέλσο όιεο νη γεληέο ησλ αλζξώπσλ κεηά ηνλ Γεύηεξν Παγθόζκην Πόιεκν, By all accounts, all generations of humans on earth after the Second Word war (WWII), at least the ones who live in West Europe and North America and in a few other countries of the rest of the world, are lucky from every point of view. They have not suffered from the calamities of another big war, the economies of their countries have improved dramatically, and science and medicine have achieved miracles. Tourism and fast telecommunications have brought humans closer to each other. Even better, most of the inhabitants of these countries have access to a lot, various kinds of food at affordable prices. My generation, the generation after 1950, although it suffered initially, managed to survive successfully and to create many things, however, always based on the big sacrifices of the previous generation, the generation of the war, and the generation of the civil war for the Hellenes in particular. Although we did not have many comforts, we were happy, because we could dream for a better world and we were working towards a better future. Our toys were not as elaborate and many as today, but we were happy because we were making our own toys almost from nothing. This was due to the joy of creativity, one of the unsurpassable elements of the human happiness. Even though, our access to a phone was limited, our communication with our human fellow was frequent, humane and personal. Since my own were born, I have been observing our children closely. On the one hand, I envy them for the so many material things they have available to them that I did not have growing up, and on the other hand I am scared by their limited personal communication with the other kids. They have so many toys, but none can give them the same joy with a toy, a creation of their own imagination. Even worst, the “famous” text messaging has been creating a “new language and culture”, which is having an unknown yet impact on the thought process of the future generations. The last generation is lucky indeed; however, is it happier than the previous ones? Or again growing older, I have become more pessimistic, thus resembling to my father who was bothered by most of the things he could not possess and enjoy any longer? GOYA NEWS On December 11 the GOYA held a Pre-Christmas get together with Father Costa. We would like to thank Father for the very educational program he prepared. We asked all members to bring hats, scarves or gloves to that event so that we could collect for the less fortunate. Over 75 items were collected and given to the Ministry of Caring. Thank you to all who donated. Later that evening the GOYAns decorated the hall with garland and had an evening of fellowship. I would like to thank all of the chaperones that evening and also the Halakos family for donating pizza. Plans are underway for our basketball tournament February 19 and 20, 2011. Please save the date for this event. On behalf of Wilmington GOYA I want to wish all of you a Blessed New Year! Serving in the kitchen that day were Vickie, John, Steven and Angie Karakasidis, and Tina Ganiaris. Our sincerest welcome and thank you to the Karakasidis family for their generosity to this Ministry of Caring dining room and to Susie Kelleher for her thoughtful contribution towards this meal! We also thank Tom Lempesis for preparing the food for the day. Thank you all for your acts of kindness during the Christmas month. George Koukedis will start us off in the New Year by sponsoring the meal on Wednesday, January 12th in loving memory of his parents, George and Jenny Koukedis and his uncle, Renos Tsakataras. All are welcome to join George that day, or on the 12th of each month throughout the new year. New sponsors are needed to fill a few months, so if you would like to become a part of this worthy cause with your family, friends or church organization, please contact Nikkie Tsakataras at 655-2252 or Tina Ganiaris at 764-2183. Thank you! The Emmanuel Dining Room is located in the Old Asbury Church at 3rd and Walnut Streets. We sponsor and serve the luncheon meal on the 12th of every month from noon until 1 p.m. Happy, Healthy New Year to all! Holy Trinity Food Pantry HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVES A GREAT SUCCESS Because of the generosity of parishioners, over 60 bags of food were delivered to St. Stephen’s Food Closet and to the Sunday Breakfast Mission in time for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. It is so easy to forget the poor of our community when we ourselves have heated homes and food on our tables three (or more) times a day. The scarcity of food has become a critical problem across our nation and major companies, businesses, and banks have become involved in the gathering of food to feed the poor. Even supermarkets have large containers near their exit doors with signs for food donations. With unemployment reaching an all time high, it is time for all of us to become involved in this humanitarian endeavor. Always needed ate: Peanut butter, jelly, pasta, rice, canned soups, tuna fish, fruit, beans, baby food, cereal, tea, coffee, sugar, flour, ready-to-eat meals, cookies, etc. Anything that will not spoil. There are two drop off locations for your convenience; one by the church office and one in the Narthex. Let us make this one of our New Year’s resolutions – to help feed the poor on our community – and the easy way to do this is to bring in a food item whenever you come to church. We thank Steve Nicholas for making several deliveries during December to St. Stephen’s food closet and to the Sunday Breakfast Mission. Wishing all Parishioners a Happy, Healthy New Year from John, Nikkie, Tina, & Steve Synaxis of John the Holy Glorious Prophet, Baptist, & Forerunner / January 7 Reading: Today we celebrate the Synaxis in honour of the most sacred Forerunner, since he ministered at the Mystery of the Divine Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ. Rest from labour. Fish allowed. Apolytikion in the Second Tone The memory of the just is celebrated with hymns of praise, but the Lord's testimony is sufficient for thee, O Forerunner; for thou hast proved to be truly even more venerable than the Prophets, since thou was granted to baptize in the running waters Him Whom they proclaimed. Wherefore, having contested for the truth, thou didst rejoice to announce the good tidings even to those in Hades: that God hath appeared in the flesh, taking away the sin of the world and granting us great mercy. Kontakion in the Plagal of the Second Tone The Jordan accepted Your presence in the flesh and reversed its course in fear. John, fulfilling the spiritual ministry, fell back in awe. The ranks of Angels, seeing You in the flesh, baptized in the river, were amazed, and all who were in darkness were filled with light, praising You who appeared and enlightened all. You followed the straight paths of the Baptist and became a desert dweller. By prayer you confirmed the universe. Wherefore, intercede with Christ our God to save our souls. Kontakion in the Second Tone Forsaking the uproars of life O venerable one, you completed your life in quiet, fully imitating the Baptist. Therefore, we honor you with him, O Anthony, Father of Fathers. Apolytikion courtesy of Narthex Press /Kontakion courtesy of Narthex Press Athanasios & Cyril, Patriarchs of Alexandria / January 18 Apolytikion in the Third Tone Shining forth with works of Orthodoxy, ye quenched every false belief and teaching and became trophybearers and conquerors. And since ye made all things rich and with true piety, greatly adorning the Church with magnificence, Athanasius and wise Cyril, ye both have worthily found Christ God, Who doth grant great mercy unto all. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone O great Hierarchs of piety and brave champions of the Church of Christ, you watch over all who sing, "Save us who in faith honor you, O Compassionate." Apolytikion courtesy of Holy Transfiguration Monastery /Kontakion courtesy of Narthex Press /Icon courtesy of Theologic Systems Timothy the Apostle of the 70/January 22 Reading: The Apostle Timothy, who was from Lystra of Lycaonia, was born of a Greek (that is, pagan) father and a Jewish mother. His mother's name was Eunice, and his grandmother's name was Lois (II Tim. 1:5). He became the disciple of the Apostle Paul when the latter first preached there, and he followed St. Paul during the whole period of the Apostle's preaching. Afterwards, Timothy was consecrated by him as first Bishop of the church in Ephesus. Under the supervision of John the Evangelist, who governed all the churches in Asia, he completed his life as a martyr in the year 97. He was stoned to death by the heathens, because, as some surmise, he opposed the festival held in honor of Artemis (Diana). The Apostle Paul's First and Second Epistles to Timothy were written to him. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone Since thou hadst been instructed in uprightness thoroughly and wast vigilant in all things, thou wast clothed with a good conscience as befitteth one holy. Thou didst draw from the Chosen Vessel ineffable mysteries; and having kept the Faith, thou didst finish a like course, O Hieromartyr and Apostle Timothy. Intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved. Kontakion in the First Tone With hymns let us, the faithful, sing Timothy's praises as Paul's divine disciple and faithful companion; with him let us also laud Anastasius the godly-wise, who shone forth with splendor like a star out of Persia and doth drive away from us our bodily sickness and spiritual maladies. He was born about 377. Since his mother had been barren, he was named Euthymius-which means "good cheer" or "joy"-for this is what his parents experienced at his birth. He studied under Eutroius, the Bishop of Melitene, by whom he was ordained and entrusted with the care of the monasteries of Melitene. Then, after he had come to Palestine about the year 406, he became the leader of a multitude of monks. Through him, a great tribe of Arabs was turned to piety, when he healed the ailing son of their leader Aspebetos. Aspebetos was baptized with all his people; he took the Christian name of Peter, and was later consecrated Bishop for his tribe, being called "Bishop of the Tents." Saint Euthymius also fought against the Nestorians, Eutychians, and Manichaeans. When Eudocia, the widow of Saint Theodosius the Younger, had made her dwelling in Palestine, and had fallen into the heresy of the Monophysites which was championed in Palestine by a certain Theodosius, she sent envoys to Saint Symeon the Stylite in Syria (see Sept. 1), asking him his opinion of Eutyches and the Council of Chalcedon which had condemned him; Saint Symeon, praising the holiness and Orthodoxy of Saint Euthymius near whom she dwelt, sent her to him to be delivered from her error (the holy Empress Eudocia is commemorated Aug. 13). He became the divine oracle of the Church, or rather, "the vessel of divine utterance," as a certain historian writes. He was the instructor and elder of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified. Having lived for ninety-six years, he reposed in 473, on January 20. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone Be glad, O barren one, that hast not given birth; be of good cheer, thou that hast not travailed; for a man of desires hath multiplied thy children of the Spirit, having planted them in piety and reared them in continence to the perfection of the virtues. By his prayers, O Christ our God, make our life peaceful. Kontakion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone Creation found delight and joy in thine august nativity and the good cheer of thy numberless miracles on thy divine memorial. Now bestow thereof richly on our souls and wash clean the stains of our every sin, Euthymius most righteous, that we may chant: Alleluia! Reading courtesy of Holy Transfiguration Monastery / Apolytikion courtesy of Holy Transfiguration Monastery Kontakion courtesy of Holy Transfiguration Monastery / Icon courtesy of Theologic Systems Translation of the Relics of St. John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople January 27 Reading: This event took place on this day in the year 438, when Saint Theodosius the Younger had been Emperor for thirty years; he was the son of Arcadius, and Eudoxia, who had exiled Saint John. The Archbishop of Constantinople at that time was Proclus, who had been the Saint's disciple (see Nov. 13 and Nov. 20). Apolytikion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone The grace of your words illuminated the universe like a shining beacon. It amassed treasures of munificence in the world. It demonstrated the greatness of humility, teaching us by your own words; therefore, O Father John Chrysostom, intercede to Christ the Logos for the salvation of our souls. Kontakion in the First Tone The holy and august Church is mystically gladdened today on the translation of thy holy relics. And though she had kept them hid in concealment like precious gold, by thine intercessions she unceasingly granteth, unto them that praise thee, the divine grace of healing, O Father John Chrysostom. Some of them preferred Basil, while others preferred Gregory, and yet others preferred John Chrysostom, quarreling among themselves over which of the three was the greatest. Furthermore, each party, in order to distinguish itself from the others, assumed the name of its preferred Saint; hence, they called themselves Basilians, Gregorians, or Johannites. Desiring to bring an end to the contention, the three Saints appeared together to the saintly John Mavropous, a monk who had been ordained Bishop of Euchaita, a city of Asia Minor, they revealed to him that the glory they have at the throne of God is equal, and told him to compose a common service for the three of them, which he did with great skill and beauty. Saint John of Euchaita (celebrated Oct. 5) is also the composer of the Canon to the Guardian Angel, the Protector of a Man's Life. In his old age, he retired from his episcopal see and again took up the monastic life in a monastery in Constantinople. He reposed during the reign of the aforementioned Emperor Alexis Comnenus (1081-1118). Apolytikion in the First Tone The three most great luminaries of the Three-Sun Divinity have illumined all of the world with the rays of doctrines divine and true; they are the sweetly-flowing rivers of wisdom, who with godly knowledge have watered all creation in clear and mighty streams: The great and sacred Basil, and the Theologian, wise Gregory, together with the renowned John, the famed Chrysostom of golden speech. Let us all who love their divinely-wise words come together, honouring them with hymns; for ceaselessly they offer entreaty for us to the Trinity. Kontakion in the Second Tone Receive, O Lord, the Sacred Heralds who preached God, the pinnacle of Teachers, unto the enjoyment of Your riches and rest. You have received their labors and their suffering as being above and beyond all fruitful offering. For You alone glorify Your Saints.
