The Structure of Latin and Greek (INTR)
Cleveland School of Science and Medicine 2014/15
Rev. B.A. Gregg, Latinist and Hellenist
[email protected]
Cell: 312.286.0601
Office Hours: 3:30-4:45 p.m.
Vision:
Students will be able be challenged at all times to think about how language
works, to question their usage and application of language, to view the world as
an ongoing process that stretches back from their current surroundings and
modern mind-set to a place removed in both geography and millennia yet a
world that remains in so many ways, very much the same.
Big Ideas
° As the foundational language for the common-usage languages of the United
States, Latin and Greek advances students’ understanding of other languages.
° More, the structure of Latin and Greek grammar provides a clear scheme to
unpack how language works. By seeing how each part of a language functions,
we can see how language as a whole creates meaning and expresses ideas.
° Additionally, through studying Latin and Greek, students gain mastery of Latin
derivative words found in college admissions and placement examinations, and
in college-level courses in science and medicine – gaining power and clarity in
their speaking and writing.
° Finally, through understanding the product and practices of the Ancient World,
students gain insight into the foundations of Western Civilization and will be
able to compare and contrast these Roman and Greek products and practices
with those current in society.

Procedures (4 B’s)
To preserve order and learning, during the formal class time, students
will remember:
Be on Time. This means all homework is turned in either before school
or at the beginning fo class. You have your quiz paper and clicker, and
you are in your seat when the class begins.
Be Professional. This, no matter how many stuffed animals you see, is
still CSSM. The same rules apply across the threshold as beyond it.
Be Prepared. To each class, bring: textbook, completed homework,
paper, pencil and pen, highlighter, Vade Mecum, and academic planner.
Be Respectful. Respect others through treating others as you would be
treated. Respect the school through treating it as you own it. Respect
yourself by doing your own homework and not copying or plagiarizing
work. Respect for, and by, the teacher is assumed.
Guidelines for This Love and Logic Classroom
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
I will treat you with respect, so you will know how to treat me
Feel free to do anything that doesn't cause a problem for anyone else
If you cause a problem, I will ask you to solve it
If you can't solve the problem, or choose not to, I will do something
What I do, will depend on the special person, and the special situation
If you feel something is unfair, whisper to me, "I'm not sure that's fair,"
and we will talk

B.G.1.1.1.3. Diacritics
Polytonic orthography (πολύς "much", "many", τόνος "accent") is the
standard system for Ancient Greek.
ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ δησπότης ἐστίν.
The acute accent ( ), the grave accent ( ), and the circumflex ( )
indicate different kinds of pitch accent. These pitch accents are not
necessary for understanding and will be mostly absent on the Quia
Exams, due to the limitation of mobile technology.
‘ο υ'ιος του θεου δησποτης εστιν.
The rough breathing ( ῾ ) indicates the presence of an /h/ sound before a
vowel, while the smooth breathing ( ᾿ ) indicates the absence of /h/. Due
to Quia and mobile technology, smooth breathing will not be noted. The
apostrophe (‘) will occur before an initial vowel.
ὁ θεὸς ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἐστίν.
'ο θεος εν τω[ι] κοσμω[ι] εστιν.
The iota-subscript was a iota (i) that lost its separate power and became
written under a long vowel. These iota subscripts do not affect
pronunciation and will occur only with certain vowels (e.g. ᾳ ῃ ῳ). The
iota subscript is very important for understanding Case. What’s “Case”?
You’ll find out soon enough!

Greek definite articles
function as Adjectives:
They modify nouns based
on Gender/ Number/ Case.
For example, προς τον

would be MAS/ S/ ACC.
Sometimes, the definite

example, ἐν δε τῷ ἀγρῷ in
