The main scientific and technological objectives of the REWIND project were in
the area of design, development and integration of advanced wireless relay stations
based on OFDM technology. In order to reach this main objective, the objectives
described below have been realised:
1. A WiMAX relay based beta network has been implemented by:
Defining the network operators’ user scenarios, requirements and business aspects;
Creating the relay network architecture including networks’ components, interfaces and
specifications;
Developing algorithms and technologies for embedding within the WiMAX relay prototype for optimized performance;
Developing a WiMAX relay station prototype that meets the requirements specified by the network operator;
Interoperability testing of the relay station with standard compliant base-stations and mobile stations with a custom test suite for
base-station<>relay-station<>mobile station scenarios;
Lab and field testing of the prototype beta system under multiple user scenarios to demonstrate the coverage, capacity and
network optimization enhancements.

2. Participation in IEEE802.16j and WiMAX Forum relay standardization processes.
The following contributions were submitted to IEEE 802.16j Multi-hop Relay
Specification:
Improve the specification by restricting the transmission of MR HARQ Error Report
header by RS to MR-BS or super-ordinate RS as an unsolicited feedback in UL relay
zone and for intermediate RS forwards the MR HARQ Error report header toward the
MR-BS only in case of centralized scheduling
Improve the specification by mandating that in multi-hop relay systems with RSs
operating in distributed scheduling mode, upon receiving a DSA-REQ from its superordinate station to request for admission control decision, an RS should reply with a
DSA-RSP to MR-BS.
Improve the specification by improving the performance of DSA and DSC transaction in multi-hop relay systems with RSs
operating in distributed scheduling mode. The performance is improved by specifying that the MR-BS shall send a DSA-ACK to all
the RSs on the path together with only the modified service flow parameters.
