Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter
Caring about Others Sometimes when people come out of
Church they say, “Boy, I wish that so and so
would have come to church today to hear
Father’s sermon.” To be honest, I don’t want
anyone saying that. Instead, I would prefer
for everyone to take internalize it. The
question is “How does this sermon apply to
me?” and not “How does it apply to someone else?” Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes
4:9-10, “Two are better than one.” If one falls
down, his friend can help him up. But pity the
man who falls and has no one to help him up.
In life we do fall or get knocked down at
times. And how wonderful it is when we have
a friend who really cares enough to lift us up,
dust us off, and help us continue on. I saw a
movie once about two (2) athletes who were
friends competing in a track race together. One athlete was winning the race, and at one
moment he turned around to see if anyone
was close to him. When he turned around, he
saw his friend had fallen and injured himself
and could not get up. He thought,“What
should I do? Should I continue on and win the
race or help my friend who is down and injured.” Immediately he made the decision to
forget about the race and the trophies and
awards that came with winning. His decision
was to take care of his friend, to lift him up, pick up his spirit and finish the race together. The outcome was that they both finished the
race in last place.
Question: Would you do that to help your
friend? Do you know what it takes for a person to refuse the benefits of coming in first
and then end up in last place because he did a
good deed for his friend?
Do you know that the people in the stands
didn’t cheer for the person who won the race
but cheered for the person who helped out his
friend. Remember, there are some things in life
more important than finishing first. Do you
ever ask yourself on Sunday morning, “Why
am I going to church? Am I going because I
feel that I owe a debt to God, so I’m trying to
pay it back? Am I going to church because I’m
carrying a heavy burden that I hope will be
lifted? Or is it because I like hearing byzantine
music and the fellowship hour after church. Please ask yourself, “Why am I going to
church.”
We should be attending church for the right
reasons, and if we are genuinely interested in
others, the church becomes a training ground
where we learn how to help one another. During the Divine Liturgy the priest exclaims, “Let us love one another that with one
mind we may confess.” If you really want to
help someone when you come to church, all
you have to do is to be on the lookout. Let’s
see, over there is a mother with both hands
full trying to herd her kids through the door. Maybe she could use your help. Or sitting
near a visitor here for the first time, you
might try to introduce yourself and express to
him or her that you are really glad to meet
them, and let them know that you are there
for them. If they are non-orthodox, then you
can introduce them to the faith, and invite
them down to the fellowship coffee hour after
church. You could also notify the priest that
we have visitors today in church, and Father
will introduce them to the congregation.
We talked about the positive side of Caring for others, let’s look at the negative side. There are some people who will say that they
have enough troubles of their own to deal
with, why should we get involved to help
someone else? Do you realize that when you
help someone else, you begin to forget your
own problems. The Bible teaches us and the
psychologists are learning today that the
quickest way to get rid of our troubles is to
become involved in helping someone else. Then you wonder why God made this a Commandment “TO LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR.” It humbles us to realize that other
people have the same problems that we face
in our lives. Today, people believe that all the
problems of the world can be taken care of by
others such as Government, Social programs,
Organizations, etc. But, I believe this does
not solve the problems of the world, it just
pushes the problems elsewhere. I also believe
that “We” together as caring people can
make a difference by giving an example for
people to follow. Let’s take that giant step in
our lives and change the way we deal with
life’s problems.

MESSAGE FROM THE
PARISH PRESIDENT
Dear Parishioners,
On Sunday, September 22, 2014, the Parish Council Board
was sworn into office. I am extremely humbled to have been reelected by the Parish Council as President. I
give my solemn oath to serve the community
of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church
with integrity and humility.
I am very pleased to announce that this
year, we have the largest pre-kindergarten,
kindergarten, and 1st grade classes enrolled
in many years. We have run out of space for
our Greek School and Sunday School classes
and are in the development stages of opening a Learning Center in the Fellowship
Hall. The size of our schools have increased
so much that it has become crucial that we continue our mission
of renovating the Fellowship Hall for the our children. This Hall,
located next door to the School Building of our Church, needs
the basics before we can even begin a dialogue of expanding it
for our children. At a minimum, the building needs a security
system, fire alarm system, and a secured entrance. These items
will cost approximately twenty thousand dollars ($20,000). How can you help? First, consider buying a ticket or table to
the Saint Nicholas Name Day 60th Anniversary Grand
Banquet. If you are unable to attend, then please consider making a monetary donation towards the expansion of the School
program. If forty (40) people gave five hundred dollars ($500)
towards the school’s expansion, we would have enough funds to
make the necessary improvements. If twenty people (20) gave
one thousand dollars ($1,000) towards the school expansion, we
could complete the project even sooner. Any contribution
would be greatly appreciated, no matter how small. Please make
your checks payable to the “Saint Nicholas Learning Center.”
Together, we can work for the continued progress of our
Community and for the future which is our children.
Thank you and God Bless.
In Christ,
Demos Anastasiades,
Parish Council President

COMMUNITY NEWS ✧ ∫Oπ¡OΔπ∫∞ ¡∂A
GREEKTOWN CDC
A message from Colonel John E. Gavrilis, CEO
Based on the request from the community, the Greektown CDC
sent an impact letter to the Liquor Board for the hearing against Casa
Luna, 500 S. Lehigh Street. The bar had several violations on record.
The liquor board imposed a two week suspension and $3,500 fine.
We also are working with the licensee to increase the lighting outside
of the bar to improve the safety of our residents and his patrons.
The Greektown CDC and the Greektown Business Alliance
proudly supported the Maryland Star Spangled Banner celebration
by flying the United States 1812 flag. We thank all the other neighbors who also participated by showing their patriotism.
The Greektown CDC is working with the Greektown Business
Alliance to beautify our business district. A letter was sent to our
businesses to keep the area in front of their businesses clean, plant
flowers and trim the flower beds. We are pleased that so many businesses have cooperated with us.
We continue to promote the new home development of Athena
Square and Kettler’s O’Donnell Square in Greektown, located in the
areas around the 800 – 900 blks Oldham Street. Please tell your
friends of the wonderful opportunity to live in Greektown and buy a
beautiful new home.
As the Fall season is upon us and leaves begin to fall, we ask all
our neighbors to sweep the curbs in front of your home or business
and bag the leaves. The sewer drains are not to be used to dump the
leaves. This causes a problem during rain or snow and causes the
homes to become flooded when a back flow occurs. The City works
close with the Greektown CDC in cleaning out the sewers, however,
we need your help in keeping the leaves from entering the sewers!!!
The leadership of the Greektown CDC was instrumental in organizing AHEPA’s Lord Baltimore Chapter # 364, Mike Athas Memorial Golf Classic. The monies raised will go towards the scholarship
fund. This year the scholarship fund awarded seven scholarships
and a grant to the St. Nicholas Church’s Greek School.
A community meeting was held on the development of the
PEMCO site. The Greektown CDC Board attended the meeting. Limited new information was forwarded to the community by the developers. We continue to wait on some specifics from the developers
concerning the number of proposed of homes, type of retailers or if
any retailers have been committed, if an anchor store has been identified or committed, Environmental Protections Agency (EPA) results,
etc. A consensus was to hold off on approving any zoning changes
until such time that the development group could offer more specifics. We will keep the community informed as new developments unfold.
We need your help in calling 311. The City has been very responsive to our office, but they ask that the residents also get involved in calling in violations. You may also call 311 or submit online
at www.baltimorecity.gov use the “request service” icon for nonemergencies and to request City services (trash, zoning, liquor board,
etc.). 911 should be called for any criminal activity.
Believe in your community!

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
“Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.” Many of you are probably wondering what this phrase means. Some of you will probably
get this right away. Others will ponder over its meaning and what it
has to do with Sunday school. Think about this phrase and we will
let you know at the end of this article. But for now, the St. Nicholas
Church Sunday School classes for School year 2014 to 2015 are
underway. We are still registering students in the Sunday school
office and in the classrooms. We urge parents to bring their children
to Sunday school. They will not only learn about Orthodox Christianity, but also make lifelong friends who share a common denominator
– their faith. In addition, they will also learn about their church and
what their role is and what is needed to keep it running and open to
all the faithful.
We hope that our young students will learn something new every Sunday. Whether it’s about the history of Orthodoxy, our prayers and our Divine Liturgy. And especially how to
better prepare their lives here on earth to live an Orthodox life and to
follow the teachings of Christ, our God. If you haven’t enrolled your
children or grandchildren for Sunday school classes, make it a priority and do so as soon as possible. Our classes start with Nursery

the beginning phrase making the rounds on Christian networks and
sites on FB. “A father was approached by his small son who told him
proudly, “I know what the Bible means!” His father smiled and replied, “What do you mean, you ‘know’ what the Bible means? The
son replied, “I do know!”“Okay”, said his father. “What does the Bible

How well prepared are we in our quest for Paradise or Paradiso?
Do we as parents take the time to read the Bible with our children
and/or grandchildren? Do we as parents take the time to teach them
about God and Jesus and our Saints in the Orthodox Church? Do
we as parents teach them what it means to fast and prepare for
communion? In all of these questions, the number one role model is
and will continue to be—the parent/s. “Leading by example”, as Father Michael would say, is the best lesson a parent can give their
child. There will always be distractions. It’s just a matter of recognizing that on Sunday mornings… what is more important to you and
your family, the distractions or attending church? Make attending
church and bringing your children to Sunday school your main objective. Then you will see how everything else will fall into place.May
God be with all of you and your families and may you have a good
month of October. Kalo kai Evlogimeno Mina to all.

Stewardship
Introduction- Ten Point Spiritual Program
The final goal of man is communion with God. The path to
this communion has been precisely defined: faith, and walking in
the Commandments with the help of God’s grace. Saint
Theophan the Recluse
While it is true that the Orthodox way of life is not the normal
way of life for most people in our society, it is a most practical
life for married people with families faced with the challenges of
careers. In fact, it is the way of living that will make your life less
stressful and more meaningful.
The Orthodox Way of Life is NOT a monastic way of life.
Even though monasticism was part of the early church, we are
not required to live this most honored lifestyle. Only a few are
called to this style of life. We do, however, have the same goals.
Like the monks we seek holiness and union with God, but we are
called to live in the world with our families. The principles of our
spiritual growth are the same no matter which path we chose.
Most of us never take the time to reflect on the purpose of
our lives. Often we don’t do this until someone we love departs
from this life unexpectedly. During this moment of grief, our soul
has our attention and we begin to think about what life is all
about. In one way, life is about death. We all know this is where
we are headed, but we too often refuse to think about this seriously because of the unknown and the fear it presents.
The purpose of life taught by the Apostles and the Church Fathers is one of finding union with God. Jesus came to save us and
to open the gates of heaven for us. He showed us how to live
through His teaching and example. He showed us that we have
nothing to fear in death.
To begin, you must have faith in God and accept His love for
you. With a little faith, you can begin to live the Orthodox way
of life through our journey of the ten point program. This way of
life is given to us by Christ Himself through His Church. It is a
proven way of life that WILL bring you closer to God. As you
come closer to God, you increase your capability to deal with
any difficulty you may face. You increase your ability to live
according to the virtues.
During the next ten months, the Stewardship Committee will
present the ten point program to help each of us find union with
God. We will be discussing the following: Prayer, Worship, Liturgical Cycle. Jesus Prayer, Slowing Down, Watchfulness, Taming Passions, Putting Others First, Spiritual Fellowship, Reading
Scriptures and Holy Father. If you follow these ten point, it will
led you to everything you need to know.
Study each one of them with us and examine your current life.
Then seek ways to make the necessary changes in your life to incorporate them. Always pray for God’s help in this.

OCTOBER OR “OCTOBRIS”: THE MONTH OF SOWING
It’s the second month of the Fall. The Greeks also give the names:
ñ Ai-Demetris or Ai-Demetriatis (since the most important celebration's that of Saint Demetrius),
ñ Broharis (because we get the first rains)
ñ Sporiates or Sporias or Spartos (since the sowing
starts) and
ñ Broumaris (which means foggy, gloomy).
During October, people would plow and sow
wheat, barley and oat. They would also complete the
vine harvest and the wine production, as well as collect the autumn fruit and potatoes.
According to the Roman calendar, October was
the 8th month of the year, since the first month was
March. That is how it received its name October for
octo for eight (8). When, in 46 BCE, January became
the first month of the year, and October became the
10th month. However, its name did not change. It was
a month dedicated to the god Ares (Mars) and was
depicted as a hunter.
This month is connected to agricultural events ever since the
ancient times, the most important being the production and testing of
wine and the hunting of small animals and birds. One of the greatest
celebrations of October in ancient Greece was “Thesmoforia”, which
was dedicated to Demeter, goddess of agriculture, and her daughter.
October is the ideal month for sowing. But, in order for the farmer
to sow, it needs to rain before - therefore, the first rains of the Fall are
indispensable, since with their slow and persistent rhythm they will
soften the soil, which has dried up due to the summer scorching sun.
And what if it doesn’t rain? What are we going to do then? Well, then
we are going to have a litany. The villagers gather at the church and,
after the priest reads a special prayer, they take the holy icons to the
valley. With the litany-prayer and with respect to God, the farmers
ask from God to bring rain. Good sowing is vital, since, whoever
doesn’t sow in October, will not have a good harvest, which means
no food.
At the same time, though, it is pretty common to have the “mini
summer” or “the mini Saint Demetrius summer”. At that point, the rain
stops, the temperature rises and people think that there is a second,
mini summer. This kind of weather favors chrysanthemums, which
are also known as “agiodimitriatika” (Saint Demetrius’ flowers).
Customs Of Saint Demetrius
There are so many people named Demetri as many there are
called George, since both saints have been particularly honored by
farmers and breeders, who consisted the biggest part of Greek popu-
lation. Riding their horses - Saint George’s is white, Saint Demetrius’
is red - they show with their weapons that they are determined to
protect the farmers and breeders from any kind of evil: themselves,
their families, their animals, their crops, their entire living. These two
celebrations are milestones in the lives of farmers and breeders.
What is more, on Saint Demetrius day, people open the barrels
and they taste the new wines. First, the priest has to come, to bless
the barrels by pouring a little bit of holy water. Then, the owner will fill
up a glass and will offer it to the priest, who will give his wishes. In the
villages of Peloponnese, people used to take a bottle of wine to the
church, to have it blessed. Then, they would pour a little bit of this
blessed wine into their barrels, so that the rest of the wine would get
blessed.
28th of October - OXI Day
On that day, in 1940, early in the morning, Gratsi, the Italian
Ambassador in Athens, handed an ultimatum of the Italian Government to the Greek Prime Minister. This ultimatum demanded that the
Italian troops be free to come through the Greek-Albanian borders,
in order to occupy some strategically important spots of the Greek
territory, that served their needs for supply and their later promotion
in Africa.
The Greek Prime Minister, after reading the text, replied back in
French: «Alors, c’est la guerre» = «Well, that means we are in war».
This phrase, became known later through the media as “NO”. Two
hours later, Greece entered Second World War. Every year on that day, ever since, we commemorate
and we honor all those people who fought with heroism for a free country, as well as, all the innocent war
victims.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,
for those who are called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28
