Company: The Politecnico di Milano University, Milan, Italy
Job Title: Researcher (Assegnista di Ricerca)
Start Date: 1st June 2011
End Date: 31st May 2014
A brief description of responsibilities, experience and knowledge gained
I was involved in a research program entitled Sanità Digitale per il cittadino: profili e lessici,
modellazioni, implementazioni / eHealth for the Consumer/Patient: lexicons, modeling,
implementations”. The research activity was focused on the development of processes and
models for implementing systems concerning the improvement of medical lexicons devoted to
or owned by the Consumer /Patient. Generally consumer skills on computer usage have
augmented, and consumers are becoming active in decisions about their healthcare (health
literacy). However, the communication gap between the doctors and the consumers/patients
persists.
In addition, I was the responsible for the hardware and software systems and services of the
Laboratory of BioMedical Informatics of the Politecnico di Milano. I was also responsible for the
development and the maintenance of the Laboratory website (www.ehealth.polimi.it).
Curriculum Vitae of Stefano Bonacina Page 1 Experience and knowledge gained:
1 – I am improving my skills on medical dictionaries, medical ontologies and language systems
(e.g. the Unified Medical Language system), and health literacy issues.
2 – I am improving my development skills on building ontologies using databases and
Ontology Web Language - OWL.

Personal Health Informatics using the Unified Modeling Language - UML.
The research activity focused on the development of modeling for processes and systems
concerning Personal Health Informatics (not only for patients and consumers, but also for
health professionals, e.g. for the General Practitioner).
In addition, I was responsible for the hardware and software systems of the Laboratory of
BioMedical Informatics of the Politecnico di Milano. I was also responsible for the development
