INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP on PHOTOIONIZATION and RESONANT
INELASTIC X-RAY SCATTERING
(IWP & RIXS 2014)
PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP
In Las Vegas, May 2011, the two communities active in the field of photoionization and resonant
inelastic X-ray scattering decided to combine the International Workshop on Photoionization and the
International Workshop on Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering into a single workshop. The first venue
of this joint workshop is in Sicily (26th August – 1st September, 2014). The aim of the workshop is to
discuss excitation and ionization of a variety of targets by photon impact , as well as the decay of these
photoexcited and photoionized species and the use of photon-in—photon-out techniques. Areas of
interest range from atoms to molecules, ions, radicals, clusters, liquids, adsorbates and solids. They
include fundamental studies, insights into applied systems, and research areas with significant crossover between different research fields, such as studies on biomolecules/biomaterials, clusters and
nanomaterials, or liquid/solid interfaces. Strong emphasis is also placed on novel instrumentation
approaches for excitation (new light sources such as free electron lasers and fs/as lasers), detection
(spectrometers) and sample preparation (liquid jets, nanoaggregate and biomolecule beams). A special
session will be dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dr. Uwe Becker who was initially a chairman of the
workshop.
ERICE AND THE “ETTORE MAIORANA” FOUNDATION AND CENTER OR SCIENTIFIC CULTURE
The «Ettore Majorana» Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture is named after an outstanding
Italian physicist. The Centre is situated in the old pre-mediaeval city of Erice near the western tip of
Sicily where three restored monasteries (San Rocco, San Domenico and San Francesco) provide an
ideal and idyllic setting for high intellectual endeavour. These ancient buildings are now named after
great scientists and strong supporters of the ‘Ettore Majorana’ Centre.
Since the establishment of the Center in 1962 by Professor Antonino Zichichi with the International
School of Subnuclear Physics, the Center has grown over the years and now is host to over 120 Schools
covering all areas of science.
REGISTRATION FEE
The fee for attending IWP&RIXS 2014 will be 700 euros per person. This fee includes housing, meals,
airport transfers and all social activities associated with the Center during your stay. For registration
deadlines and details please consult the web page.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
There are many flights from Rome and Milan to Palermo as well as a limited number of flights to
Trapani Birgi which is nearer to Erice. On the official arrival day transportation will be provided from
Palermo and Trapani airports to the Center. The same is true for the official departure day.
ACCOMODATION AND FACILITIES
There are living quarters in all three renovated monasteries for people attending the workshop. In
addition to these rooms some participants may be housed in local hotels. Meals are provided in a
variety of local restaurants.
