ATA-Associazione
Associazione Tecnica dell’Automobile (the Italian Automotive Society), with the
cooperation of Fiat, is organising the 4th International Conference on ‘Advanced
‘
materials
and technologies for transport-Lightweight
Lightweight materials: sustainable solutions for the next
vehicles generation.
This Conference is intended to be an event where car-makers
car
needs, research developers
and materials/technology suppliers offers, are shared together to discuss the future of
materials in automotive, also including cross fertilization with other transport sectors.
The issue of reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions is probably the most important
challenge for automotive research over the coming years. Hence, car makers have to face
the reduction of vehicle structural weight through the deployment of new materials in many
sub-systems
systems and components and on the optimization of the structural layout, including
complementary ways of achieving weight reduction through holistic, multi-functional
multi
design
and numerical simulation, considering the potential for the standardization of the materials
and the respective process technologies.
In this context, further medium-term
term research is required to accelerate the development
and applications of advanced lightweight materials and the respective production processes
in order to enable rapid introduction, while ensuring sustainability and viability by rapidly
achieving the appropriate economies of scale.
The analysis of the trade-off
off between the extra cost of lightweight design and the possible
gains from lower life-time
time costs for energy consumption and emissions is really important
and strategic.
Accordingly, innovation in materials engineering will play a central role in light weighting
strategies. In particular, significant evolution is expected over the coming years, as regards:
• steels offering improved performance
• aluminum and hybrid-integrated light alloys
• advanced plastics and composites
• new methodologies to predict long term behavior of novel materials and
multi-material solutions.
Likely, no particular class of materials will prevail but, after technical and economic matters
are solved, each different material will be used to exploit its potential in multi-materials
multi
solutions.
The Conference is chaired by
Rosanna Serra (Fiat-Chrysler)
