It includes some of the greatest challenges of the present age such as demographic change and ecosystem change, including the phenomenon of climate change. La sostenibilità è definita come “soddisfare i bisogni della generazione attuale senza compromettere la capacità della generazione futura di soddisfare i propri bisogni” (Commissione Bruntland, 1987). La sostenibilità include alcune delle sfide maggiori del tempo presente come ad es. i cambiamenti demografici e ambientali, ivi incluso il fenomeno del cambiamento climatico.
