Facts about the university
Humboldt University of Berlin was founded in 1810, based
on the visionary ideas of Wilhelm von Humboldt‘s unity of
teaching and research, freedom of scholarship, and allround education of its students, which have since served as
an example for all modern universities world-wide.
It began with 256 students
52 professors
and the 4 classical faculties:

In 1949 the university‘s name was officially changed to HumboldtUniversität zu Berlin after its founding father Wilhelm von
Humboldt and his brother Alexander von Humboldt:

Facts about the university
Today Humboldt University of Berlin is organized into eleven faculties,
several central institutes and interdisciplinary centers.
Our department belongs to Philosophische Fakultät II.
Our department also has links with
the Centre for British Studies and
the Centre for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies
HU: There are now 419 professors, 1,984 other academic staff , 1,516 nonacademic employees, plus 1,874 student assistants (as of January 2015).
During the last year HU had 31,098 students (excl. Medical Faculty).
