The Emperor’s New Clothes
Once there was an emperor who liked new clothes. One day two bad men came to see him.
“We have some very beautiful cloth,” they said, “But our cloth is not the same as other cloth.
Foolish people can’t see it.” “Oh, it’s wonderful cloth,” said the emperor. He gave a lot of money to
the two men and told them to make his clothes.
Some weeks later, the emperor called a great man. He said, “Go to see the new cloth.” The
great man went to the two men. The two men said, “Our cloth is very beautiful, isn’t it?” The
great man looked and looked, but he could see nothing ― because there wasn’t anything there.
“Am I foolish?” he thought. “I will never tell anyone that I can’t see the cloth.” The great man
said, “Oh, yes. It’s very beautiful.”
The great man went back to the emperor and said, “The cloth is very beautiful!” Soon all the
people in the city were talking about the beautiful cloth. “It’s so beautiful that foolish people can’t
see it,” they said.
One week later, the emperor took all his great men and went to the two men. “Isn’t the cloth
beautiful?” said the two men. And they pretended to hold the cloth in their hands. “I can see
nothing.” the emperor said to himself. “Am I foolish? If I’m foolish, I can’t be the emperor!” He
said to everyone, “Oh, the cloth is beautiful. I like it very much.” All the great men there looked
and looked. But of course they could see nothing. “Beautiful! Lovely! Very pretty!” they all
said. “Tell the men to make some clothes from this cloth. Then you can put them on and walk
through the streets. All the people will see how great you are.” The emperor was now very happy.
The two men pretended to work hard. And one morning they cried out, “The emperor’s new
clothes are ready.” The emperor came to the two men. All the great men came with him. “Here
are your clothes,” the two men said to the emperor. “We’ll put these new clothes on you.” The two
men pretended to dress the emperor in the new clothes. “How nice! They are just right for you!”
all the great men cried out.
The emperor walked through the streets in front of all the great men.
People cried out, “Oh,
how beautiful our emperor’s new clothes are!” Then a little child said, “But the emperor has
nothing on!” It went from one to another. “But he has nothing on!” All the people at last cried out.
The emperor was angry because he knew that the people were right. But he had to go on through
the streets.
