Dear Parents and Karateka,
I hope that you all had a really good break and are as excited as me about the year ahead?
The 2012/13 Squad
As you know this is the first time that a squad has been selected. So far the squad members are students
that have won gold/silver in a tournament in 2011. There are 3 tournaments this year before July and if
you or your child wishes to get into the squad they should enter all three tournaments with a hope of a
medal. If you are already in the squad you will need to enter all three tournaments as part of the squad
training.
The ultimate aim of the squad is that we will compete in 2013(Date to be finalised but somewhere
between Sept-Oct) in Finland at the FUNAKOSHI SHOTOKAN WORLD TOURNEMENT. Only
squad member will be invited to this tournament.
To be an international competitor one has to without doubt, be committed and train very hard. It is with
this in mind that I urge students not to miss any sessions, should a student miss 2 sessions before
Finland he/she will be out the squad. The sessions will be once a month during term time and will cost
£8 per session (money to be handed in BEFORE the session starts please). The most famous Shotokan
Instructor in the world is Shihan Kanazawa and we are honoured that one of his god-children will assist
training the squad sessions; he has trained with Shihan Kanazawa for over 20 years.
The squad is divided into two categories: Junior which is from 10th kyu (Yellow Belt) – 6th Kyu
(Green/white stripe), they will train from 2-3.30pm and senior which is 5th kyu (purple belt) and above
as well as all adults students and they will train from 3.30-5pm.
