Charger bats on fire in
14-6 win over Pointers
by Tom Chillemi
The young Middlesex varsity baseball team delivered 17 hits in a 14-6
Conference 42 win over a more experienced West Point squad on April 10.
“I’m very pleased with the team
effort,” said Charger coach Tim Blake.
“I was really impressed with how my
young team picked up the signs . . .
bunts were crucial in advancing runners and that kept the pressure on West
Point.”
It was the first win of the season for
the Chargers (1-4). “It was a big win
for a young team,” Blake said, “West
Point has an older team with more
experience and depth, but we played
well and held up.”
Freshman Alex Fitchett pitched a
complete game, striking out 7 and
scattering 9 hits over 7 innings, while
walking only two. “He’s very effective
as long as he throws strikes, and he had
a good day on the mound and at the
plate,” Blake said.
Blake said someone pointed out to

freshman pitcher, but also had a freshman catcher in Greg Pitts. “I hadn’t
thought about it,” said Blake. “Greg
did a good job behind the plate.”
Austin Cooper, who usually starts at
catcher, was being used as the designated hitter due to a minor leg issue.
The Chargers posted 5-run rallies in
both the second and fifth innings, and
added two more insurance runs in the
sixth. They also scored a run in both
the first and fourth innings.
Leading the Charger attack was
Fitchett with four hits, three RBIs andfour runs. “It was a good job by our
lead-off batter,” said Blake.
Adding two hits, three RBIs and
scoring a run was Cooper.
Kyle Shelton contributed two hits,
an RBI and two runs.
Lawson ripped a pair of doubles, had
an RBI, and scored two runs. Lawson,

YMCA’s ages 12-15 team
places 2nd in tournament
The Middlesex YMCA hosted
a 12-15 year old double-elimination tournament on Saturday, April
12. Teams from Mathews County,
New Kent County, West Point and
the Northern Neck joined Middlesex
and coach Neal Barber in the tournament.
After a long day and some teams
playing up to five games, the tournament came down to Middlesex and
the Northern Neck in the championship game. Both teams played their
hearts out. With the kids being near
exhaustion, the game went into overtime. The score was still tied after
overtime and a penalty kick shootout ensued. Each team chose five
players to take the kicks and the team
with the most goals scored would
win the game. Middlesex showed
that they were on its game, scoring
three goals to the Northern Neck’s
one. Justin Newman showed a very
strong presence as the goalie, blocking shots that amazed both teams.
Middlesex came out on top of
the Northern Neck in the game, but
because it was the Northern Neck Y’s
first loss, the two teams had to play
another game to decide the championship. In the last game, with everyone exhausted, the Northern Neck Y
prevailed and took the trophy across
the river.
Special thanks to everyone who
helped make the tournament possible, especially to Matt Schaefer and
his players from Christchurch School
who refereed the day’s games.
Davenport rules at Virginia Motor Speedway
by Kelley Carlton and Dave Seay
For driver Jonathan Davenport of
Georgia, and car owners Kevin and
Leroy Rumley of Greensboro, N.C., the
Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth at
Virginia Motor Speedway was a highly
coveted victory. On Saturday the team
notched a big win when Davenport
overtook early leader Billy Moyer Jr. on
lap 17 and held off a hard-charging Scott
Bloomquist in the late stages of the
60-lapper to claim the $20,000 winner’s
check. The win also propelled Davenport into a tie with Chris Madden for the
National Dirt Racing League point lead.
Davenport was fastest in Group A of
Keyser Manufacturing Time Trials lowering the VMS track record to 16.745
seconds for the half-mile dirt oval.
However, it was hall-of-famer Scott
Bloomquist in Group B who picked up
the Bell Helmet’s fast time award when
he erased the record Davenport had just
set. Bloomquist tripped the clock at a
mind boggling 16.509 seconds. Earl
Pearson, Jr., Chris Madden and Don
O’Neal rounded out the top 5 qualifiers.
Wins in the 10-lap heat races went
to Davenport, Billy Moyer Sr., Gregg
Satterlee and Billy Moyer Jr. Finishing
second in heats and going to the redraw
were O’Neal, Bloomquist and Dennis
Erb Jr.

who walked three times, got on base
all five of his plate appearances.
Chris Blake delivered two hits and
an RBI.
Maurice Nelson singled twice and
scored.
Mason Phillips and Greg Pitts each
had one hit and scored twice.
Adam White singled.
The Chargers will play at Charles
City on Tuesday, April 22, at 5 p.m.
The game originally scheduled
against Lancaster for Friday, April 15,
has been canceled due to a conflict
with opening night of Little League.
The Chargers’ next home game is
Tuesday, April 29, against King and
Queen at Deltaville Ballpark.
MHS girls win 15-14 thriller
by Tom Chillemi
The Middlesex Lady Chargers
prevailed 15-14 in an action-packed,
lead-changing battle with West Point
on April 10 for a Conference 42 win.
Middlesex took advantage of 7
walks and 5 hit batters in the see-saw
game at the Middlesex Sports Complex in Locust Hill.
By the end of two innings, the Lady
Chargers held a 8-1 lead. However,
they watched that lead evaporate
when West Point scored 4 runs in the
third inning and 9 more in the fourth
inning to take a 14-8 lead.
Lady Charger head coach Wade
Traynham said he huddled his team
and told them they “were about to
find out something about themselves.
They needed to focus and fight back.”
They did.
In the bottom of the fourth inning
Middlesex scored 6 runs to knot the
score at 14-14.
Lady Charger pitcher Kaitlyn
Weber was spiked while trying to
cover home plate. However, despite
the injury she shut out the Lady Pointers over the next three innings, backed
by good defensive play.
In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Lady Charger Quinlan Moore doubled with 2 outs. Tambria Wake then
tripled over the left fielder’s head to
bring in Moore with the game-winning run.
West Point threatened in the seventh inning, but good defensive play
by Zariah Freeze, Austen Taylor
Dozier, Shelby Lewter and Tambria
Wake sealed the win.
At the plate for Middlesex, Freeze
went 2 for 4 with two doubles, 3 RBIs
and 2 runs. Moore was 2 for 3 with a
double, 2 RBIs and 3 runs.
Wake was 1 for 3 with the gamewinning triple and 2 runs.
Avis Keeling singled and scored a
pair of runs.
Weber walked 5 times and scored 3
runs. Rachael Howard doubled, had 2
RBIs, and scored.
Lewter and Dozier each scored.
Howard made 5 good putouts in left
field, and Quinlan Moore had 2 good
catches in center field.
“My girls showed a lot of focus and
played well, and hung in there when
the going got tough,” said Traynham.
Assistant coach Neil Wake has
returned after 18 days in the hospital.
“He’s an expert in attitude adjustment,
quality control, and his help is appreciated tremendously,” said Traynham.
The Lady Chargers (1-0, 3-3) travel
to Charles City on Tuesday, April 22,
for a 5 p.m. game.
Note: Last week’s story erroneously reported that the Lady Chargers defeated Rappahannock in the
Lancaster Invitational Tournament.
Actually, the Lady Chargers defeated
Rappahannock County.

MHS alumni basketball games planned
A pair of Delaware drivers, Kenny
Pettyjohn and Austin Hubbard, scored
wins in their respective B-Mains to
make the feature event. Series provisional starts went to Kent Robinson,
John Blankenship and Mason Zeigler.
At the outset of the Aaron’s event,
pole sitter Billy Moyer Jr. took command while Davenport sliced through
the middle of a 3-wide melee in turn one
to move to second, with the remainder
of the field locked in double formation
to complete lap one. Moyer Jr. moved
away as Davenport had to fend of challenges from Moyer and Satterlee.

door to door. Up front Davenport began to reel in Moyer Jr.
as they both began to encounter
backmarker traffic. By lap 15
Davenport was all over Moyer,
first stepping outside but finally
making the move around the hub.
Bloomquist slipped by Madden
and set after Billy Moyer Sr. as
they both drew to the rear deck
on Billy Moyer Jr. Over the next
several laps the Moyers raced
wheel to wheel with the elder
finally covering the spot. The
pass also allowed Bloomquist to
close in on Billy Moyer Jr. and
take another spot away one lap
later.
After the halfway mark, Davenport was in heavy traffic and
Billy Moyer Sr. was able to close
down on his fellow Longhorn
Chassis driver. Moyer began to
put some pressure on Davenport,
nosing alongside the leader on
multiple occasions. But the race
for the lead was quelled when the
event’s lone yellow flag waved.
For the restart, Billy Moyer Sr.
opted for the inside, which moved
Bloomquist to the outside. When
Davenport brought the field
back to green Bloomquist made
his move for second. Sweeping around the outside of turn
2 Bloomquist took over second
and set after the leader. With only
10 laps remaining, Bloomquist
pulled to Davenport’s rear deck.
Bloomquist threw all he had
at Davenport but a slick move
around a lapped car coming to
the white flag sealed the deal
and gave Davenport just enough
open space to grab the checkers
and the $20,000 check.
The top 10 finishing order:
Davneport, Bloomquist, Billy
Moyer Sr., Don O’Neal, Saterlee, Billy Moyer, Chris Madden,
Steve Francis, Dennis Erb, Jr.
and Jason Covert.
In the Budweiser Modified
Lucky Dog 30, Matt Quade
and Jimmy Duncan led the field
to green in search of a $3,000
payday. On the start Quade took
over the top spot with Duncan
in tow. On lap 7 Bret Hamilton
would get under Duncan for
third.
Quade would pull away and go
on to the $3,000 payday followed
by Michael Reynolds, Joey Polevoy, Ryan Toole and Bret Hamilton rounding out the top five.

MES celebrates the arts
What was all the buzz at
Middlesex Elementary School
on April 9? It was the 2014 Fine
Arts Festival “As Our World
Turn & the Days Go By.” The
annual event highlighted student talent in art, music, theater
and dance.
Art teacher Dixie Doerr and
music teacher Becky Wilhite
shared the honor of hosting the
evening festivities. The musical portion of the program
featured the 4th and 5th grade
choir, the ORFF ensemble, and
a recorder ensemble. Thomas
Wilson presented a surprise
performance on the saxophone
when he played “Easter Bunny
Blues.”
Members of the ORFF
ensemble
include
Jordan
Booker, Natalie Cutler, Isaiah
Hayes, Nyema Head, Ethan
Huggins, Jakim Lomax, RuthAnne Key, Delaney Ruark,
Jackson
Stamm,
Aniyah
Thompson, Jordan Ward and
Thomas Wilson.
The Orff Ensemble is a
group of students who follow
the teachings of Carl Orff
who combined singing, moving
and playing instruments to teach
music. Students play the instruments named after him. They
are mostly percussion instruments such as glockenspiels,
metallophones,
xylophones
and drums. Also included are
melody instruments such as
recorders in this method of
teaching music. The unique feature of the Orff mallet instruments is that the individual bars
are removable. This facilitates
playing pentatonic (5 tone)
melodies and chords.
The
recorder
ensemble
includes Mary Casto, Chyanne
Evans, Dylan Knight, Kori
Waltman, and Molly Weston.
The fourth and fifth grade
choir continued the theme for
the night singing songs throughout the calendar year such as
“Goodbye, Summer,” “Jolly
Old Saint Nicholas,” “Listen
to the Beat of My Heart,” “An
Irish Dance” and many more.
Molly Weston performed an
amazing Irish dance while the
choir sang.
The choir members include
fourth-graders
J o r d a n
Booker, Elizabeth Bristow,
Jack Bollock, Kelsey Clark,
Kaydence Congleton, Evee
Cook, Tyler Dinnell, Wyatt
Evans, Emma Hale, Skye
Haskiell, Emily Hall, Nyema
Head, Mason Hensley, Laniya
Hundley, Jerimiah Lemon, Abi
Marshall, Jordan Mills, Kacie
Moreno, Emma Oliver, Delaney
Ruark, Autumn Satterly, Victoria Snyder, Lillian Taylor, Eddy
Tennant, Aniyah Thompson,
Joseph Valencia, Will West, and
Thomas Wilson.
Fifth grade choir members
include Lane Anderson, Jordan
Ashburn, Amira Bailey, Claire
Batley, Airiana Beverly, Broke
Brohawn, Katie Brooke, Jordan
Bushong, Hannah Cannon,
Braydon Chandler, Katlain Collins, Hannah Croxton, Natalie
Cutler, Xiola Debeau, Aniston

Lakin Millen, Kylie Morino,
Sadasha Piper, Kaelyn Sibley,
Amaya Smith, Jackson Stamm,
Jade Tullos, Laura Walton, Kori
Waltman, Jordan Ward, and
Molly Weston.
Following the musical and
dance performance, students
and guests were invited to the
cafeteria to view the showcase
of art by students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
Proceeds from the fourth grade
garden art were donated to the
Middlesex Animal Shelter.
“All in all, it was an evening to
remember,” said a guest.
This article was written by
fourth grade reporters for the
MES newspaper, “Colt Chronicle,” Mikalya Dunham-Quigley, Kendall Lucas and Owen
Miller.

Did you see lots of orange
bags on Saturday around
Middlesex County? By all
accounts the first annual
springtime Clean Middlesex
Day was a smashing success. Hank “Trainor” Roden,
who was working in his studio/
gallery on Cross Street Saturday, observed, “It looked
like a parade of orange passing through town all morning
long.”
It was not a parade at all. It
was a lot of trash collected by
a lot of volunteers. Organizers
don’t yet know exactly how
many participated. With numbers still coming in, it looks to
be close to 100 folks clearing
enough litter to fill an estimated 500 large VDOT garbage bags and delivering them
to the stations before day’s
end. In addition to the bagged
litter, close to two dozen old
tires, large pieces of lumber
and other abandoned trash
too large to fit into a bag were
picked up. All of this trash was
found along the roadside, burrowed in ditches, and tossed
into the woods adjacent to
roads throughout the county.
Among the areas cleaned
were Urbanna Road and differing segments of Route
33 between Deltaville and
Saluda, Kilmer’s Point, Burchs
Mill Road, Town Bridge Road,
Stormont Road, Water View,
Wilton Creek area, Zion
Branch, Stamper’s Bay, Dirt
Bridge Road, and areas around
Deltaville.
Volunteers represented the
Rotary and Kiwanis clubs; the
neighborhoods of Deer Chase,
going to pick up the garbage” on the drive up, wrote
to Shuman, “Thank you for
the opportunity to help out the
community. . . .We used it to
teach our grandchildren that
community service is a good
thing.”
Perhaps the youngest community service volunteer was
the grandson of Ann and Ben
Marshall (Deer Chase). Young

Each year, Kiwanis clubs

of service. Kiwanis One Day
was established in 2007 to
unite the Kiwanis family and
their communities in the spirit
of service and camaraderie to
make an immediate and measurable impact on communities
around the world. The special
day of service seeks participation from the nearly 600,000
Kiwanis family members
involved in Kiwanis, Aktion

Builder’s Club and K-Kids in
80 countries around the world.
Kiwanis members identify
local community service projects relevant to their area’s
local needs.
On Saturday, April 5, mem-
bers of the Middlesex Kiwanis,
K-Kids and Key Club gathered at the Middlesex Family
YMCA for this day of service.
Volunteers spent the morning
painting, landscaping, washing the Y bus, and cleaning the
facility.
“I am so thankful for the
Kiwanis Club’s sense of service,” said Middlesex YMCA
Branch Executive Rosabeth
Ward Kissman. “They make
this community stronger and
believe in the collaborative
spirit, which makes us all stron-
ger. Through their efforts, our

“Even more than these
results, the true meaning of this
day is that we as a community
come together to touch lives—
to make our county better—to
be more for those who need
us,” said Kissman.
“A special thanks go to Terry
Rogers for coordinating the
event and to Wilton Cottage
& Garden for supplying landscaping materials,” said Kissman.

Lions celebrate Charter Night
by Jennifer Lucas
The Middlesex Lions celebrated 52 years as a club at
their Charter Night meeting on
April 8.
Five of the original members celebrated with their
fellow Lions. They were Lloyd
Apsley, Robert Dickerson
and his wife Evelyn, Charles
Bristow and his wife Betsy,
Raymond Benson, and Norton
Hurd. Dolly Thrift, wife of the
late Lion Sydnor (Syd) Thrift
Jr., also was our guest. Syd was
very instrumental in organizing
the Lions Club of Middlesex in
1962. Syd’s dream of forming
an organization in the county
that would “serve” our fellow
citizens has been realized in
the service provided, and over
the years has expanded in all
areas of help to the community,
state, nation and world.
Lion Norton Hurd expressed
his personal appreciation to
the Lions for all the monies
awarded in scholarships to
Middlesex students to further
their education.
Lion Hank Norton was recognized for his 20 years of
service, and to Robert Brooks
who has been a member since
1982. Reida and Chris Avery
were awarded 10-year member
pins and Bob Hatcher was recognized for bringing in two
new members.
Lions Thomas Hartley, William Perkins and Garland
Robins were remembered in a
special memorial service. They
were dedicated members of the
Middlesex Lions and their service will be missed.
Our Lions will have the Pedia
Vision Machine at the Healthy
Kids Day Event on Saturday,
April 26, at the YMCA. This
machine screens for vision
problems in our children.
On Saturday, May 17, our
Lions will be located in areas
throughout the county for our
annual White Cane Day. All
donations go to help the visually impaired.
Middlesex Lions meet the
second Tuesday of each month

(Continued from page B2)
chesapeake academy news
Students sign honor pledge
ment, manners, and life skills. Assistant Head
of School Julie Keesee said, “Our aim is to have
students accept differences and act honorably.
We teach manners and life skills so students
can learn how to treat others, how to react when
someone does something that bothers them and
how to respond when another person does something particularly nice.”
In lower school classes, teachers take time
every day to discuss challenges children face
and guide them in acting appropriately in solving problems. Middle school students engage
in similar conversations in multi-age advisory
groups that meet regularly.
The school has established a formal conflict
resolution process to help children who cannot
solve problems on their own. Keesee supervises
this process, which she says sometimes ends
with a handshake between students involved in a
conflict, at other times in a formal contract which
both sign acknowledging how they will behave
in the future.
YMCA to offer boxing classes
On Monday, April 21, the
Middlesex Family YMCA will
start a boxing program that fits
all ages and abilities. Former
amateur boxer Mark Jones will
coach the class, focusing on
discipline, fitness and, above
all else, boxing skills.
Mark was a nationallyranked boxer in New Jersey
and moved to Middlesex
County three years.
The class will take place
throughout the year on Mon-
days from 4-5 p.m.; Wednesdays from 6-7:15 p.m.; and
Thursdays from 7-8:15 p.m.
On Mondays, kids are welcome to take the Y bus from
the schools to the YMCA
to participate in the boxing
class. Participants will train
hard to have results that will
show throughout their everyday lives in strength, discipline and composure. For more
information, call the YMCA at

sports, which are open to students in grades 5-8 and include
the ones he coaches plus volleyball, track and field, crosscountry and golf.
Griffin points out that sports
at Chesapeake Academy are
meant to be more than fun and
games. “Our sports program
supports the school’s mission
in several ways. We promote
social responsibility, honor and
character, physical well-being
and personal development. We
are also keen on developing a
sense of good sportsmanship
in all our students, helping
them learn to win and lose with
grace,” he said.
As the spring semester
winds down, Griffin is devoting more of his time and attention to summer camps. “We
have a great lineup of activities
planned for youngsters of all
ages. I want every boy or girl
who attends to go away feeling
this was a great way to spend
part of their summer,” he said.
