SUMMARY OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS: SB CONCEPCION

Sylvia B. Concepcion is currently the Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Mindanao and is
currently a Professor of the School of Management. She received her PhD in Sociology from the
University of the Philippines Diliman in 1998, Master in Management (Business Management) from
the University of the Philippines Cebu in 1984 and Undergraduate degree in Business Administration
from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1978. Prior to her appointment as Chancellor of UP
Mindanao, She was the Vice Chancellor for Administration of UP Mindanao and the Dean of the
School of Management for 2 terms. Prior to her joining UP Mindanao, she was the college secretary of
the College of Business Administration of UP Diliman.
Prof. Concepcion has more than two decades of research experience and her main research interests
are specifically in the field of agribusiness supply chains, market and consumer research, and smallholder farming studies. She has led and conducted various researches mostly on the relational aspects
of these areas. These researches were funded by international funding agencies like the Australian
Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the International Institute for
Environment and Development (IIED). She was involved in several research projects and
collaborative producer group studies as project leader. Among them are: Supply Chain Improvement
of Sago in Selected Regions in the Philippines funded by PCAARRD from January 2013 to December
2015; Scoping Study for Supply Chains of Fresh Vegetables in the Philippines, in collaboration with
UP Diliman and Curtin University from September 2005 to March 2006; Measuring the Level of
Awareness and Consumption Patterns of High School Students and Elementary Pupils for the
Vegetable Industry Council of Southern Mindanao (VICSMIN) Pre and Post Vegetable Campaign in
Selected Private and Public Schools in Davao City from January to April 2005; Increasing the
Efficiency of the Agribusiness Supply Chain in Mindanao ASEM/2000/10, in collaboration with
Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia, PCARRD and ACIAR from 2000 to 2005. She
was a Visiting Research Fellow at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia from
June to December 2004. She was a Country Paper Writer in 2004 on the Philippine Vegetable
Industry: Enhancing Linkage Between Upstream and Downstream Agents in the Chain / Re-governing
Markets: Securing Small Producer Participation in Restructured National and Regional Agri-Food
System at the International Institute for Environment and Development, London and SEAMEO
Regional Centre for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture.
Currently, Prof. Concepcion is the project leader of the project, “Developing Vegetable and Fruit
Value Chains and integrating them with Community Development in the Southern Philippines,” with
partners from University of Queensland, University Philippines Los Banos, Visayas State University
and Landcare Foundation funded by ACIAR. Her research works were published and cited in many
international and local journals as evidenced by her H-index of 7. She is one of the 64 UP Scientist
and Researchers who has been named as one of the Top 150 Filipino scientists by Webometrics in
June 2015. Her research on “Agribusiness Supply Chain Research” was given an award in 2006 and in
2010 as the Best Higher Educational Institution Research Program for Region XI by the Commission
on Higher Education”. She was also a recipient of the Agora National Award for Excellence in
Marketing Education by the Philippine Marketing Association in 2007 and Datu Award for Excellence
in Marketing Education in Mindanao by the Philippine Marketing Education, Davao Chapter in 2007.

As acknowledgement of her research accomplishments, she was awarded a Professorial Chair Award
in 2003, 2007, and 2010, by the UP Mindanao Foundation, UP Foundation, and Southeast Asian
Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture, respectively. UP Diliman awarded
her a UP Faculty Scholarship Grant in 1994 and the UP Business Research Foundation Diliman
awarded her a Faculty Research Grant in 1989. She is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society
since 2008.
Prof. Concepcion has published in numerous leading publications such as that of ACIAR Proceedings,

local, national and international conferences.
Aside from her research expertise, Prof. Concepcion has also made a remarkable contribution in the
area of teaching at the School of Management, University of the Philippines Mindanao. Her teaching
was consistently rated by her students as excellent despite her administrative loads as chancellor of the
university. She was a recipient of the Metrobank Foundation’s Regional Winner Search for
Outstanding Teacher in 2012.
