It wasn’t that long ago when a saw was the only tool used for tree care. Then, a revolutionary idea said that not all trees should be cut down. Some trees, many trees in fact, could be saved. If we just understood the science of tree care better, we could develop an entire field of “tree medicine” to protect and beautify some of our urban area’s most valuable resources. From this revolutionary idea, tree healthcare was born and the arboriculture game was changed forever. Chainsaws are, of course, still widely used in arboriculture, but today’s tree care requires a much What Does It Mean To Be A ‘Game Changer’? Frankly, there are plenty of invasive insects that kill trees. If this were, say, the emerald catalpa borer or the emerald buckeye borer, we wouldn’t be talking about this. Emerald ash borer (EAB) is different mainly because there are so many ash trees that their loss affects not just forests, but public safety, politics, ecosystems, and last but not least, budgets. In many ways, the management of emerald ash borer is pretty easy to understand: You can either treat the trees, or cut them down. Simple as that. Now we are getting a better idea of what treatments give the best protection under different circumstances with new research. The only constant in EAB is change. Stay tuned, the story of emerald ash borer is likely not over yet.... THE EXPONENTIAL DEATH CURVE: Impacts other than ash trees that are affected by EAB: It’s a rule of biology: Give any group of lifeforms an unlimited food supply and no natural enemies, and that group will reproduce at an exponential rate until one of those factors changes. Right now, EAB populations are growing exponentially, and ash trees are dying just as fast. EAB populations grow slowly at first with just a few dead trees. Then a few more, then a few more, until it hits a tipping point where the number of dead trees is staggering. Planning for this phase has become a key focus in EAB management across the country. Public Safety Impacts Millions Political Impacts Thousands The iQ Tree Infuser was invented with emerald ash borer management in mind from the beginning. See more about the iQ System on pages 6-7. Emerald ash borer is deadly to ash trees because the larvae feed right under the bark. This is where a tree conducts water and nutrients from its root system up to its leaves. As the number of larvae increases, more of the tissue is damaged which blocks the flow of water and nutrients, and the tree dies. After a tree is infested, these symptoms often take several years to show up, adding to the challenge of management. No matter who we’ve talked to about ash trees — homeowners, city officals, or property managers — a greener option for emerald ash borer was well recieved. TreeAzin is changing the way people and municipalities are thinking about saving trees. In research trials, trees in lower risk areas have been successfully protected with Xytect soil treatments, Transtect bark sprays, emamectin benzoate, and TreeAzin treatments fairly equally. As the trees get larger and the likelihood of infestation becomes greater, the number of options go down. Tree injection is recommended for the largest and highest risk trees. (shown in blue) The larvae of the beetles eat the growth rings under the bark of the tree. A heavily infested tree can no longer transport water and the top dies. The beetles will move on to the next ash tree. www.treecarescience.com 5 TREE CA PREDICTABLE RESULTS [ARBORICULTURAL RESEARCH] PROVEN PRODUCTS PROVEN PRODUCTS PREDICTABLE RESULTS THE GAME CHANGING EQUIPMENT iQ Tree Infuser How Does It Work? The iQ Tree Infuser was designed with you, the professional, in mind. We looked at all aspects of application from dosing, application time, ease-of-use, durability, and safety. We came up with an easy-to-use injection system that is fast and dead-on accurate. Did we mention that NO expensive plugs are needed for these treatments? Well, they are not, and that’s not the only feature you will love. The iQ Tree Infuser is chock full of solutions to common pitfalls of other injection devices. 1. Dose The iQ Tree Infuser is a smart-powered, smartdosing, and smart-designed injection device created by and for tree people just like you! We are constantly thinking, “Who designed this stuff? Clearly not the guy who had to use it all day.” So, we set out to create the first device with the technician involved from the beginning. We interviewed dozens of applicators and business owners across the country about what features they hated about current devices and what they would love to see on a new device. The result is the iQ Tree Infuser, born from the collective smarts of all the people who would actually use it. Precision Dosing Plug-less System Tree healthcare treatments are expensive to waste, chemical exposure is risky, and calibration is a hassle. We addressed all three of these with one, intuitive way to dose. The #1 thing we heard from our interveiws was “No plugs, please.” They are expensive, an extra step to install, and a production killer when they run out. You wanted no plugs, you got it. • Stainless steel tip seats snuggly into a 15/64" hole. • No mixing in the field. That means no funnels, no tippy graduated cylinders, no bottle caps — nothin’. • Save time and money by not messing with plugs. • Set the total dose and inject away — no need to keep track of the dose and you cannot overdose a tree — no waste! • Indicator light lets you know when the injection is finished and it is safe to remove from the site. Smart battery Compressed air tanks are a pain to deal with, not to mention an additional hidden cost of production. Manual triggers get tiresome and extension cords are often just not practical. So, we found a battery with enough juice to get the job done day in, day out. • Holds up to 2 lithium ion batteries • Easy to recharge • Up to 5 hours of field time per battery • No calibration required and is dead-on accurate to 1/1000 of a milliliter other awesome features Awesome Feature Why Is That Awesome? Utilized by large utility companies to keep trees out of powerlines, but largely ignored by tree health professionals. Today, growth regulators are better understood, widely used, and regulating growth is just one of the ways they are benefiting trees. Growth Control Still the #1 use, slowing tree growth helps reduce conflicts and extends the life of urban trees. 2004 2011 Oak tree growth slowed significantly following Cambistat treatments. This makes Cambistat an ideal tool for complementing other tree healthcare practices and treatments. Cambistat has been shown to reduce growth as well as increase a tree’s ability to withstand drought conditions and the effects of urban tree stress. Trimtect is an innovative formulation of Cambistat for use on shrubs, small trees, and bedding plants. Trimtect consistently reduces the shoot growth of plants by 30-70% during the growing season. Sprayed on the foliage, Trimtect is the newest generation of growth regulators formulated specifically for shrubs, flowers, and other landscape plants to maintain a manicured appearance with less maintenance. Expectations Expectations Cambistat will reduce the shoot growth of trees by 30-70% and the effects will last approximately three years before needing to be applied again. A response can be noted in most species within 30 days. Trimtect is an annual treatment. Treated plants have smaller leaves and can display darker foliage and enhanced plant health. Yes, they can. We discovered over the years that drill bits play a huge role in the speed of uptake and success of results with tree injection. A high-helix bit changed every 5-10 trees can completely change how long you spend at the job site, and ultimately, how many trees you can protect in a day. Imagine, something as mundane as a drill bit changing your injection game. 15/64" High Helix Drill Bits 5/16" High Helix Drill Bits 3/8" High Helix Drill Bits 9/32" High Helix Drill Bits Item # 5314 Item # 5318 Item # 5327 Item # 5328 www.treecarescience.com 15 Miticides [ARBORICULTURAL RESEARCH] PROVEN PRODUCTS PREDICTABLE RESULTS PROVEN PRODUCTS PREDICTABLE RESULTS RTSA Horticultural Oil Forbid Floramite SC Hexygon DF Item # 1111 1112 1105 1107 11151 11182 305 302 304 Active Ingredient Acephate 97.4% Acephate 97.4% Abamectin 2% Abamectin 2% Petroleum Oil 98% Spiromesifen 45.2% Bifenazate 22.6% Hexythiazox 50% EPA Signal Word Caution Caution Warning Warning Caution Caution Caution Caution Avid Purespray Compares To Unit Size 10 oz. pouch 20 foil packets 250ml bottle 1 quart 2.5 gallon1 55 gallon2 8 oz. 1 quart 6 oz. Traditionally, these pesky pests could be managed only through spray applications. Lepitect was the first soil applied treatment available that controlled mites as effectively and quickly as spray treatments, while being a whole lot easier to apply. Understanding and managing the soils trees grow in has become a key factor in tree health management over the past decade. Either as drench application, or incorporated using an Air-Spade, mycorrhizae and bio-stimulant treatments are changing the way arborists care for trees. 2101 2103 Active Ingredient Iron (Fe) Manganese (Mn) Unit Size 50 packet box 488g canister Units per Case 12 Units 1 Unit Uses If you do any mite control treatments, see how Lepitect could change the game for you.
