Honorary Doctorates
An Honorary Doctorate is the most prestigious award that the University of
Waikato can bestow. For their significant contribution to the University, the
Waikato region and the wider New Zealand community, the University was
pleased to award the following worthy recipients:
BRIAN RICHARD PERRY
CONFERRED 13 FEBRUARY 2008
JOHN GALLAGHER
CONFERRED 18 MARCH 2008
Founder of The Perry Group, Brian Perry established
and ran an organisation that is undoubtedly a major
factor in the prosperity of the Waikato region.
John Gallagher’s significant contribution to
“community governance”, includes a long history
of serving on community and commerical boards.
He has been a Waikato Regional Councillor and
a Hamilton City Councillor, including a term as
Deputy Mayor, and was the founding President of
Tourism Waikato. He is also a long serving Justice
of the Peace.
A long time supporter of this University, Brian’s
fundraising efforts and contributions date back to
the 1960s. He co-chaired the fundraising appeal for
the indoor recreation centre and in 1994 received
the University of Waikato Medal, reserved for those
who have provided distinguished service to the
University and its communities.
Today, the Perry Foundation helps individual
students achieve excellence through the Brian
Perry Business Management Scholarship, the Perry
Foundation Scholarship in Science and Engineering,
and Sir Edmund Hillary high-performance scholars.
Despite his significant business successes and his
extensive philanthropy, Brian has gone out of his
way to avoid personal recognition. He is highly
respected for his integrity, his kindness and his
passion to help fellow New Zealanders. He has truly
lived his own philosophy of putting back into the
community in a way that is commensurate with
what one takes out.
Many organisations and initiatives have benefited
from John’s ongoing philanthropic and mentoring
support.
This saw him made a Companion of the New
Zealand Order of Merit in 2002, and an Officer
of The Order of St John in 2000. In 2003 he
gained a Special Lifetime Achievement Award
at the Waikato Chamber of Commerce Westpac
Business Excellence Awards.
John Gallagher has served on the University Council
since 1990, and has filled the offices of both
Pro-Chancellor and Chancellor. He is currently
Chairman of the Foundation.

BILL GALLAGHER CONFERRED 18 MARCH 2008
This year is the 70th anniversary of the
founding of the family-owned electric fencing,
manufacturing and engineering firm that Bill
Gallagher has built into the internationallycompetitive Gallagher Group.
Bill was elected a Fellow of IPENZ, a Fellow of
the NZ Institute of Management, a Distinguished
Fellow of the Institute of Directors, and was
inducted into the National Business Review Hall of
Fame in 2004.
recipient of the Excellence in Communication
Leadership Award, and in 2002 was named the Ernst
& Young Entrepreneur of the Year.
Bill Gallagher is an exceptional “son of the Waikato”
with an outstanding record of contribution to
business, the Waikato economy and to the academic
and wider community.
(abridged citation)
Bill Gallagher was awarded the MBE in 1987, the
Queen’s Commonwealth Medal in 1990, and made
a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in
1998. In 1996 he was the first non-north American

RUUD KLEINPASTE
CONFERRED 7 APRIL 2008
DR TĪMOTI KĀRETU
CONFERRED 11 APRIL 2008
‘Bugman’ Ruud Kleinpaste has iconic status in New
Zealand. His ability to keep audiences of all ages
spell-bound with stories about the ecology, the
behaviour, and the vital role of insects is world
renowned and he has an international profile as a
media educator in these areas.
The outstanding ability of Dr Tīmoti Samuel Kāretu
as a multi linguist has formed the foundation of a
life dedicated to the revival of the Māori language.
Charged by the University in the early 1970s with
establishing the first stand-alone Māori Department
in any of the universities, he later became our
founding Professor of Māori.
One of this country’s leading science communicators,
Ruud writes for newspapers and magazines as well
as publishing books. He has also made a number
of television appearances here and has hosted
internationally syndicated television programmes
for the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.
Very closely aligned with the University’s own focus on
ecology, environmental conservation and sustainability,
Ruud maintains his research, works as a consulting
entomologist for Government departments and private
companies, lectures on ecology and entomology, and
is also deeply involved in New Zealand conservation
efforts. Ruud holds an MSc honours degree in
silviculture, animal ecology and conservation from
Wageningen University, Netherlands.
In 1987 Dr Kāretu was appointed the first
Commissioner and CEO of the Māori Language
Commission to promote the use of the Māori
language as an official language in New Zealand.
He is the current Chairperson of the Kōhanga Reo
National Trust, and the Executive Director of the
Institute of Excellence in Māori. He is also a QSO
and an Honorary Fellow of the NZ Educational
Institute.

A Brief History of the University
The University of Waikato had its genesis in 1956,
when a small group of visionary individuals began
working towards founding a university for the
people of the South Auckland region.
A college, a sub-branch of Auckland University,
was established in 1959 and in 1965, after opening
its doors in 1964, the University of Waikato was
officially opened by the then Governor-General, Sir
Bernard Fergusson (later Lord Ballantrae).
From modest beginnings, on what was largely
farmland and with a handful of temporary buildings
and staff, the University of Waikato has a student
population of 13,000 of whom more than 4,800
complete a qualification annually. Today, the
University employs some 2,000 academic and
support staff, making a significant contribution to
the local economy.
The University has built research quality to be
ranked No.3 in New Zealand and has forged strong
international links; 175 agreements have been
signed with universities around the world.
Our Vision
The overarching themes
of our Vision are
Excellence, Distinctiveness
and International
Connectedness; these drive
the University of Waikato.
We see our distinctiveness in terms
of three interdependent components;
Sustainability, Māori and Leadership.
Our real distinctiveness comes in
their synergy in the context of our
identity. We are a New Zealand
university, aware of our relevance
and responsibilities to the region,
and determined to compete on an
international stage.
THE CAMPUS
Our quality Hamilton campus environment, with
grounds covering an area of 65 hectares, continues
to be a source of community pride. The grounds
include sports fields, walkways, three lakes and
extensive gardens. Maintenance of the beautiful
grounds is a priority, along with developing the
built environment to accommodate the University’s
growing needs.
The Hamilton campus is also home to the WEL
Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts, a
high-technology facility for the performance of
drama, music, dance, and Māori and other cultural
performing arts. It is also a vital teaching facility
for the University, and a world-class performance
venue, welcomed by Hamilton and the wider
Waikato community who share it.
The University of Waikato has a campus at Tauranga
and a strong relationship with the Bay of Plenty
Polytechnic. Collaborative arrangements include
the sharing of resources and services and joint
provision of professional development and training
opportunities for staff.

Our Commitment
The University of Waikato is committed to delivering
a world-class education and research portfolio,
providing a full and dynamic university experience
which is distinctive in character, and pursuing strong
international links to advance knowledge.
Through sustained research and the attraction of
high levels of external funding from public sector
and industry sources, we aim to maintain a highly
competitive research profile. Our staff participate
in a wide range of research consortia, clusters, and
multi-institutional research teams locally, regionally,
nationally, and internationally. We are well-placed
to contribute to the local and national economies
by enhancing business capability in the region and
increasing opportunities for the commercialization
of intellectual property.
We play an essential leadership role in the prosperity
of the Waikato, defined also in terms of the tribal
boundaries of the 16 iwi affiliated to Te Rōpu
Manukura. We sit at the heart of a community
of strong regional partnerships and take pride in
serving the strengths and interests of our region.
Strength in
Numbers
The University of Waikato
showed its strength by
being ranked number
1 in New Zealand in 10
subjects in the Tertiary
Education Commission’s
2006 Performance-Based
Research Fund.
• Accounting and Finance
• Chemistry
• Communications, Journalism
and Media Studies
We are committed to increasing both the tertiary
participation rate of our regional population
overall, as well as the proportions of new schoolleavers and postgraduate students. We are also
committed to ensuring the ongoing relevance of the
programmes we offer, and the effectiveness of our
delivery of them.
• Computer Science, Information
Technology, Information Sciences
We foster a culture of internationalisation, measured
through the diversity of our student and staff
profiles, a long-standing pride in our reputation
for the pastoral care of our international students,
and the measures we take through curriculum,
programme design and our global networks and
connections to international influences.
• Music, Literary Arts and
Other Arts
From inception we have been at the forefront
of initiatives in support of Māori aspirations. Sir
Bernard Fergusson placed Waikato as “the first of
the New Zealand universities to be planted right in
the heart of traditionally Māori country”. Since our
foundation, we have worked closely with local iwi,
particularly Tainui, to make the University accessible
to Māori students and to foster an environment
of success. Today we are proud to have the
highest proportion of Māori students of any New
Zealand university.
We are proud too, of our evolution into a truly
New Zealand institution supporting our country’s
nation-building policies and reflecting our
nation’s identity.
• Ecology, Evolution and Behaviour
• Management, Human Resources,
Industrial Relations and
Other Business
• Molecular, Cellular and
Whole Organism Biology
• Pure and Applied Mathematics
We are also ranked #1 in Education
when University and College of
Education scores are combined.
Waikato showed impressive numbers
in its quality score for research
over a wide range of subjects. We
strengthened research performance in
more than 85% of our subjects.
The numbers reflect the quality
of our academic staff and firmly
establish Waikato as a top researchled university. The numbers also
show that students at Waikato are
taught by staff at the leading edge of
their disciplines.

Ceremonial Traditions
Elements of university graduation ceremonies have evolved from the 12th century
when the first universities emerged in Europe.
The organisation of medieval universities was
modelled on the established institutions of the day
– the church, the monastery, and the guild.
Latin was the language used by medieval scholars,
and it is from Latin that the words ‘university’ and
‘degree’ are derived. The Latin term universities
means a guild or union and universities started as a
scholastic guild – a self-constituted community of
teachers and scholars.
The word graduate comes from the Latin word
gradus, which means step. Admission to study a
bachelor’s degree was the first step taken towards
completing a university education. The second step
was to become a ‘master’. Masters were Master of
Arts graduates whose degrees licensed them to
teach. The Chancellor, an officer of the cathedral,
originally granted teaching licences.
CEREMONIAL ROBES AND
ACADEMIC DRESS
In the Middle Ages the corporate existence of
universities was recognised and sanctioned by
civil or ecclesiastical authority. The regalia worn
by graduates and university staff today reflect
this mix of medieval governance. Robes worn by
the Chancellor resemble those worn by the Lord
Chancellor of England. Graduates and academic
staff wear gowns similar to the dress of medieval
clergy. Hoods are also fashioned on an everyday
medieval garment, although the coloured lining was
a later addition to indicate the wearer’s university
and degree.

Let us then be joyful
Juvenues dum sumus
while we are young
Gaudeamus igitur
Let us then be joyful
Juvenues dum sumus

Post jocundam juventutem
After the pleasure of youth
Post molestan senectutem
After the burden of old age
Nos habebit humus
The earth will have us
Nos habebit humus
The earth will have us
