“Ukiyo” and the Floating World
It was the end of the 17th century in Japan and the Shogun Hideyoshi was faced
with a unique problem: an increasingly wealthy middle class with time and
money on their hands. In the old world of serfs and lords, this had not been a
problem.
Edo, the capital city of Japan (later called Tokyo) was rife with sex clubs, ribald
entertainment and both male and female prostitutes. Sex was hot, and the local
priests were not happy.
So Hideyoshi took a large tract of land north of the city accessible only by canal,
which was called “Good Luck Meadow,” or in Japanese, “Yoshiwara.” He had
the remainder of the tract enclosed with a moat, so that the only access was by
water to keep minors and criminals out (and the sex workers in). Visitors got
the impression that the whole area was an island, and called it “The Floating
World.” The term applied not only to the geography of the place, but to the
floating feeling one has when in the throes of sexual satisfaction.
The area soon filled with brothels, teahouses, kabuki theaters, Sumo arenas
and other amusements. You may have heard New York referred to as “The City
That Never Sleeps” – the Yoshiwara was known as “The Nightless City” when
New York was little more than a fishing village in the middle of nowhere.
But this was no typical “Red Light” district – inside the Yoshiwara, unlike
the rest of Japan, there were no class or gender distinctions. Samurai were
technically forbidden in the Yoshiwara, so they had no authority there. The
floating world had its own rules. A farmer (assuming he had the money) was
treated the same as a high ranking Daimyo (lord). Women were not only
allowed, but encouraged to learn to read and write, and study music, the arts
and history. They were also allowed to run their own businesses. Some even
became very wealthy and had their own “concubines.”
People involved in mizu shobai (“the water trade”) would include hokan
(comedians), kabuki (popular theatre of the time), dancers, dandies, rakes,
tea–shop girls, Kano (painters of the official school of painting), yūjo (ordinary
prostitutes), courtesans who resided in seiro (green houses) and geisha in their
okiya houses. Homosexuality, cross dressing and fantasy role play were all
widely tolerated.
Also, for the first time, sex and sexuality were treated openly and freely. One
could seek out any fantasy one chose, without fear of reproach. Classes were
taught in sexual technique and were well attended. Safety became a concern
(accidents were bad for business). Shibari and Kinbaku (sexual bondage)
became art forms. Inside “the floating world” one could be whatever they
chose to be, if they were clever enough to achieve it.
Many years have passed since the 17th century, and some aspects of the
Yoshiwara, like prostitution and drug use, are no longer acceptable. But the
concept of the floating world (in Japanese, “Ukiyo” 浮世) survives to describe
a community of equality and acceptance of one’s own sexuality and the
sexuality of others. It has become the Japanese equivalent of what we in the
US call “the scene.”
When we first discussed this event, we wanted it to be a place for all the
alternative groups. We thought of the round table, the UN, the Worlds Fair. But
the one that rang true was Japan’s Floating World – a place of equality, respect
and above all, a completely sex-positive attitude.
So in 2007 we set out on a journey to recreate the Floating World. We never
dreamed it would be so successful. Twice the number of people attended than
we originally planned and the atmosphere on Saturday nights was absolutely
magical. We originally had no plans to make it an annual event, but after it was
over we saw how inevitable that would be.
We hope you come to feel the same way about it as we do.

We love our local Police & EMT Squads, but we want them at our event to learn and have fun, not to work.
Please make every effort to make sure neither needs to be called for an emergency, by being safe and
being courteous.

Dungeon Monitors (DMs) and Safety staff must be obeyed at all times. Persons not cooperating
with Safety staff will be removed from the event without refund.
Hazardous or unsafe play, or any play deemed unsafe by the event staff, is prohibited. Consult a DM
if you aren’t sure about the safety of an activity.
If you have a known medical condition that might affect play, notify both your partner and the
nearest DM before a scene.
The event safewords are “RED” and “SAFEWORD.” If anyone, Top or bottom, says one of these words
ALL PLAY MUST STOP. Tops will be allowed a reasonable time to respond before DMs intervene.
Bottoms who are restrained or gagged in such a way as to prevent them from loudly calling a
safeword must be given an alternate means of signaling distress such as a horn, ball or cloth that
can be dropped as a safeword. Partners may also arrange their own safewords as desired.
Alcohol or drugs – Intoxicated persons or persons carrying alcoholic beverages or drugs will NOT be
allowed in the play spaces.
No solo scenes, find a spotter. DMs don’t have time to monitor solo scenes.
No non-consensual staring/masturbation. Do not distract people involved in a scene or become
involved in a scene without prior agreement. In short, no wanking!
Barrier protection is to be used at all times, EVEN between “blood bonded” individuals. Gloves,
condoms and other equipment are provided; see a DM for locations.
Fire play is limited to isopropyl alcohol and paraffin wax. The Fire Marshal has final approval on all
fire play and must be notified any time anyone wishes to enjoy fire play.
Breath play – Restriction of the airway is allowed, but not to the point where the bottom becomes
cyanotic or loses consciousness. All parties in the scene must be able to communicate in some way
at all times, even if by hand signals. Notify a DM before starting a breath play scene.
Electrical play – Violet wands may be used anywhere on the body, with the exception of the face.
TENS and similar devices may be used below the waist. Homemade electrical devices are not
allowed except as part of a class or workshop. No stun guns or cattle prods! They are Illegal in the
state of NJ! Do not bring them into our event.
Water sports, golden showers and cum are prohibited as we don’t have adequate clean-up facilities
at the play space.
Singletail whips and other long-reach toys are restricted to designated play areas.
Medical scenes are restricted to medical play areas. Piercings, cuttings, suturing, and blood play,
including temporary piercings, are restricted to designated areas. You are responsible for all body
fluids and sharps disposal. Tops must wear gloves and safety glasses any time skin is penetrated.
Weapons/Uniforms – No firearms, pyrotechnic or ballistic devices allowed in play space. No
Police, government or emergency uniforms may be worn that are valid in the State of New Jersey.
Switchblades or automatic knives are illegal in the State of NJ.

Event Rules
1.
All activity must be consensual – both inside and outside the play areas. This includes demeaning or
humiliating remarks to people of different orientations or interests.
2. Nudity is allowed in play spaces and classrooms but not in any area visible to the general public, especially
the registration area.
3. Cell phones, cameras and recording devices are strictly prohibited in the convention Center – even in
classrooms, vending areas and restrooms. We recommend you leave them in your car or hotel room. If
found they will be confiscated by the event security and returned after the event (minus any images). An
event – authorized photographer will be available for souvenir photos. Registered event vendors may
use a cell phone in the vending area for business reasons.
4. Weapons – NO firearms, explosives or pyrotechnic devices, stun guns, cattle prods, switchblades or
automatic knives allowed. Replica (non-firing) guns, swords and knives are allowed but should be in a
bag or case when not being used in actual play. Alert DMs before using weapons in a scene.
5. Alcohol – No one carrying alcoholic beverages or who is noticeably intoxicated will be allowed into the
play spaces. No illegal drugs of any kind at any time, even in the parking lot.
6. Smoking is not allowed in the building by NJ Law. Please smoke outside – min. 15 Feet from the
Entrance of the Building.
7. Solicitation – Accepting pay for sexual services of any kind is illegal in NJ - that includes BDSM, Pro Dom/
sub services and “personal training” of an erotic nature, even when payment is made off-site. Solicitation
is prohibited; violators will be removed from the event without refund. In short - do not offer or accept
money for any goods or services unless you are a registered TFW vendor.
8. Security – Event Security, DMs, Convention Center Security, State and Edison Township Police and Fire
Marshals may all be on site to provide a safe environment for our event. Please cooperate with their
instructions. Persons not cooperating with a security or safety staff will be removed from the event
without refund. Security Volunteers are fellow lifestylers, looking to insure we all have a good and safe
experience. It takes a team effort to accomplish this. Security is constantly observing all of Floating
World. Feel free to communicate any and all requests and/or observations with and to them.
9. Registration – All attendees must be 19 years of age and provide government issued ID to verify age.
Attendees with known medical conditions must state those conditions at time of registration and alert
Safety/Medical staff before scenes.
10. Wristbands must be worn on the wrist at all time. Keeping it in your pocket or on your toy bag is not
sufficient. Attendees without proper wristbands will be removed from the event.
11. Facility – Remember, we are renting this facility and we would like to be welcome to return in the future.
Do not damage any part of the facility, and respect Convention Center Staff at all times, keeping in mind
that they may be vanilla.

Face it – two things make an event like this: the presenters and the facilities.
Without both of them the weekend will never be truly great. And since an
event like this requires “Special facilities” we decided to make ours the very
best anywhere.
First off – SIZE COUNTS! We have 80,000 square feet dedicated to play
alone. Nobody else even comes close. We have 10,000 sq ft dedicated to pony
play, more than some events have for the entire event! Yes, there is a special
space to swing an 8’ whip, yes, there is space to wrestle, yes there is special
space for fire and wax play or pull a pony cart or anything else your dreams
desire! And no, you won’t be disturbed by people trying to get by to get to the
rest rooms. This is no hotel ballroom – we have 28’ ceilings for our suspension
bondage towers, and concrete floors for fire play and wax play. We can even do
fire flogging! (the on-site Fire Marshall approves all fire play)

for this event is the legendary Frazier of the Washington, DC club The
Crucible. Frazier has done gay events, straight events, swing events, pony
events, age play events, indoor events and outdoor events. He also does
the famous Camp Crucible event every year – a 360 acre extravaganza with
30,000 sq ft of indoor dungeons. He’s been creating exciting dungeon play
spaces for over a dozen years. You’ve played in a Crucible dungeon if you’ve

One of the main functions of this event is to promote contact, communication
and exchange of ideas between individuals and across all the major scene
groups, and we can’t do that if we lock each group away in its own special
area. Plus, you wouldn’t be getting the most out of the event if you just hang out
with the usual crowd, would you?
That said, there are certain issues that are of special importance to the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community, so we are planning classes and
workshops that are of a primarily queer interest, taught by experts in the
community. Anyone, of any orientation, is welcome to attend.
There are also times when a person just wants to “hang out with the boys” or
enjoy a “woman-only environment” so we will be building “men only” and
“women only” playspaces. We encourage you to enjoy these as well as the
main playspaces and other facilities provided at the event.

A monthly gathering and support group for those in Edison,
NJ and surrounding metro areas (NY, NJ PA) in the
Dominant/submissive lifestyle. The group is open to anyone,

interested in D/s, B&D or S&M. We meet the 3rd Monday of
each month at the Hilton Garden Inn (Raritan Center) 50
Raritan Center Parkway, Edison, New Jersey in the private banquet room

Alt-Ed Inc (Alternative Educational Events, Inc)
Alt-Ed Inc is our management team, a nonprofit corp created just for this
event. Their job is to handle the “business” end of the event - the hotel,
dungeon gear, programs etc. The idea is, since their allegiance is to the event
and the event only we eliminate a whole lot of the politics that surround
many events. It’s a dictatorship, that’s true – but a benign one. And since it’s
100% nonprofit, all the money made at this event makes its way back to the
community.

If you were to judge me like a book, you’d find my cover redhead of
a certain age, neither homely nor handsome. In comparison, my pages
would be a delightful surprise. The war between control and addictions
has shaped my soul. Addiction to reading to soothe my soul and expand
my horizons; to writing to prevent the ideas from devouring my mind; to
adrenaline to feed my courage; to terror, to push me farther. Addiction
to pain to awaken my spirit, and to pleasure to make it smile. Addiction
to the mountain – the challenge, not for any hilltop view, simply for the
joy of the climb. Addiction to all-consuming fire, distilling my thoughts
to the most powerful – survival. Addiction to skipping to show the world I
love life. Addiction to caffeine and chocolate, rare steak and strawberries.
I am a creature of excesses, tempered by a twisted code of ethics – a
chameleon whose skin changes from one extreme to another but always
as a reflection of my soul. I crave … Travel to ease my itchy feet. Pain for
the pure joy of it – for the way it changes one’s scent and taste. Leather
for the smell, the flip of my heart, and the slick feel of death and life
rolled together. The kiss of a singletail. The searing fire of rawhide. The
gripping sting of rubber. The punch of a butch. Single-mindedness. Black

Maggs (AKA MaryAlice AKA Ms MAP in Heels), Assistant Event Director, Operations &
Event Training
MaryAlice has been an EMT since 1991 is a CPR Instructor & Rescue
Diver and she enjoys teaching Scene Safety, Personal Protection and now
DM classes at various munches and for Floating World (Do you have a
personal first aid kit and flash light in your toy bag???). She has been clean
and sober for over 30 years.
She attended her first public dungeon in Hawaii in 1995 and she has
been very active in the scene ever since. She has attended every Black

Rose Convention held since ’97, and has volunteered as a DM since
2001. Over the years, she has enjoyed being an active participant at
many munches, clubs and events all across the country, including: KFE,
DFP Fashion Shows, The Mission, ACDS, The Floating World, TES, Hellfire
(NYC), BTS (NJ & PA), BESS, Leather Retreat, Black Rose, The Fetish Flea,
The Crucible; Dark Odyssey Winter Fire, Wet Spot in Paradise, The Wet Spot

Amy, Head of Human Resources
Amy Hammel has been in the lifestyle for over 20 years. She is originally
from Connecticut and is now a 6-year resident of New Jersey. Since
moving and missing her community back “home,” she created ACDS
(Atlantic City D/s), a different type of munch: one that incorporates games,
discussions and/or demos in a private non-intimidating environment.
Her group recently celebrated its 5th anniversary. Two years ago she
started The Triad in Edison NJ, a tri-state munch group. She identifies
as a “submissive with a mind,” and although she misses The Group and
Society, back in CT, she can be seen enjoying meetings with NDD/s, Toms
River Munch, NJSubStation, Temptations Reign and The Gate. Amy is senior
staff and founding memeber of Black Phoenix and is also a member of
Libery Gay Rodeo Association. Along with volunteering for NELA, PETA,
and local organizations, her interests include motorcycles, poker, cooking,
swimming and animal rescue.

Cowboi Jen, Head of DMs
Cowboi’s name was proudly given after many years of competing on
the gay rodeo circuit. Founder of the Liberty Gay Rodeo Association, she
spearheaded the first gay rodeo in the Northeast called the Liberty
Stampede.
She has been visibly active in the leather lifestyle for over 9 years. Currently
living in Philadelphia, she is a proud member of Tribe, Crusty Old Leather

Dykes (C.O.L.D), Leather Tribe of Philadelphia, LSM and numerous pansexual
groups. Cowboi is teaching free DM and Dungeon Safety classes thru the
Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions as she feels you cannot put a price on
safety. You may recognize her as this is her 3rd appearance as a volunteer
for Floating World. Cowboi is also the producer of the first Philadelphia
Leather Pride Night (P-LPN) taking place this November 7th. This charity
event will benefit the Leather Archives and Museum and rumor has it there’s
a planned Disney invasion in December.
Most recently Cowboi won the inaugural title of Mid-Atlantic Leatherwoman
making her the first. She will continue to strive to bring the women’s
community together throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region and beyond.
Jerry, Head of Medical Services
Jerry has 30 plus years in volunteer fire rescue, EMS (Emergency Medical
Service), Dive Rescue Team experience. He is a National and NY State
certified EMT, Outdoor Emergency Care, SAR (Search and Rescue),
MCI (Mass Casual Incident) Crowd Control, Fire Fighter, Hazardous
Materials (Haz-Mat) response Tech and Technical Rescue (this is where
they play with lots of ropes). He is a Federal DMAT (Disaster Medical
Assistance Team) member. He assisted in the rescue efforts for Hurricane
Katrina and the Florida hurricanes (Frances and Igor). He has also been
an EMS coordinator for the Syracuse State Fair and one of the 165
NYSDOH chosen EMTs to be at Woodstock. He is a Dominant with
10 years of experience in the lifestyle. He teaches first aid, safety, and
knots. He is a member of Black Phoenix, Life in Nassau, Triad, Suffolk Supper
Munch, and DsF. When not sceneing with his girls, Jerry enjoys: camping,
spelunking, repelling, and teaching Wilderness first aid.
Zebrianna, Head of Programming
Zebrianna has been actively involved in public BDSM lifestyle events
and advocacy since 2000. She volunteers extensively, helping with the
management of her local munch group NDD/s, managing the East Coast
Group Leaders Forum, running fund raisers, and serving as a dungeon
monitor at many of the mid-East Coast lifestyle events. She presents on
her passions (all of the sharp implements) every chance she gets. Zeb has
done NeedlePlay, Skin Stapling, Cutting and/or Blood Play workshops
for NDD/s, BootCamp I & II, ACDS, The Floating World I & II, DsF/
Paddles NYC, Black Phoenix/Winter Solstice, Adventures in Sexuality/Winter
Wickedness, BESS/Charm City Fetish Fair, TES Fest, Leather Retreat, and
Black Rose. This is her first year working on the other side of presenting,
as Head of Programming for Floating World 2009. When not teaching
or volunteering, Zeb can be found in the dungeon at most any event she
attends as one of the last people playing into the wee hours of the night
(or morning).

JD, Head of Security
A Man with an authoritative presence. He has been active in the lifestyle
for approximately 10 years. He has attended multiple lifestyle functions
and this will be his third Floating World event working with Security. He
is currently working security in a professional capacity and has helped in
various other BDSM events over the years. “Capable and competent, you
can depend on JD to keep things running safely and smoothly.”
Lady Meri, Head of Vending
Meri has been in the lifestyle for the past 15 years. This Domme’s biggest
belief is in a safe environment for all. Her naturally outgoing personality
led her to start out by producing BBW weekends on LI. She ventured
out to Hell Fire and Paddles in NYC where she became a member of DsF.
Since then she has become an active member in Life in Nassau, Staten
Island Kink, Suffolk Supper Munch, Triad, MAsT LI and Black Phoenix. In
the past she was on staff for The Gorean Weekend in Las Vegas, one of
her most favorite events, and she has also been an active contributing
member of LI Leather n Roses.
Meri, along with her partner Sparky, created Life in Nassau, a lifestyle group
in Nassau County, NY. This group provides educational presentations
and socials. LIFE is one of The Floating World’s sponsoring groups and
one of the multi-group sponsors at Black Phoenix. LIFE also produces the
Annual Long Island LIFE Fetish Flea Market, a multi faceted event with
vendors, classes, demonstrations, food and a whole day of fun. Lady Meri
also hosts B&B weekends in the Poconos for lifestyle minded people who
need a safe and fun get-a-way. She has volunteered for the last two years
at The Floating World by holding numerous volunteer positions including,
DM, Transportation and Security. This year, she is now proud to be
included in The Floating World staff.
Morpheus, Attendee Services
Founder of the Pleasure Positive movement and The Pleasure Positive
Principle, MorpheusNYC has taught BDSM/Tantric/Sexuality/STI
classes for 12 years, has attended more than 300 classes, volunteered
for various events, organizations and hosts parties/events. Formerly, he
was a Russian Interrogator and Counter-Intelligence Agent with the US
Army having served a combined 13 years as an Enlisted Soldier then
Officer by way of Officer Candidate School. He served as Educational
Director for The Society of Janus and has taught classes for: AASECT, NJ
School of Medicine, Widener University, Mr. S, SMOdyssey, SOJ, DsF, TES,
Lifestyles Convention, PolyamorousNYC among others along with appearing
on national television. Also, he runs the nycALTevents list which is a
calendar of everything out of the norm in NYC. To join, send an email

Frazier, Dungeon Equipment Master
Frazier (aka “Uncle Frazier”), an unrepentant “Professional Dirty Old
Man,” owns and operates The Crucible in our nation’s capital. He is an
Emeritus Board Member of the Black Rose. Frazier also drives the “Truck
O’Torment” up and down the East Coast providing the dungeon for most
of the big events other groups put on, such as: TES Fest, Delta, the first
5 Leather Retreats, Alure, Ohio Leatherfest, Orlando Bash, and many many
more, including Floating World. Frazier also produces Camp Crucible, the
penultimate BDSM camping experience each Memorial Day weekend.
Frazier and his experienced Crucible Dungeon Crew hope you have a good

Jezebel, Program Book Design
In my life, I’ve had the pleasure to be quite a number of people, some of
whom I liked better than others. I guess I’m really an experience junkie,
which means I’ve had the chance to do a lot of pretty cool things. However,
that does have a tendency to bite back more often than you might think.
I’m also a “language slut.” I love the way words feel when I say them or
sign them – the way they sound and how they look (both in writing and
in American Sign Language) is what I can feel all over my skin. You can
imagine that I love to argue over subtleties of meaning. I’m often accused
of being “a devil’s advocate” and of “playing with semantics” – I am
guilty as charged.

Boyd B, Publicity
Boyd is a native of PA and is a human GPS on the streets of Philly and the
surrounding metro area. He is a member of ACDS, The Gate and Triad
munches. He is a founding member and staff at Black Phoenix. This is his
second year at Floating World as was honored to be asked to be Publicity
for the event. This event is special to him as he is getting married to Amy
on Sunday evening.
Sydney, Registration
Sydney Adams has been in the scene for nine years. She is a poly, bi,
switch, or as her husband Louis says: “Greedy.” She has lived in the Philly
area her entire life. As a member of The Gate and NDD/s you can usually
find her at one of their events. She is also an assistant organizer of the
Philadelphia Mindful Polyamory Meet-up Group. She enjoys volunteering
for lifestyle events, gardening, reading, cooking, and crafting.
Tina Rock, Transportation
Tina Rock has led Knot For Everyone (KFE), a central NJ bdsm support
group, since May 2001. Currently she puts on 3 munches and 1 or 2

parties every month, and she can be reached at [email protected] if you
want to attend. Tina worked registration at TES30, several TES Fests,
and Floating World I and II. She has also volunteered at Black Rose and
Camp Crucible.
Sparky and Boyd, Construction Crew
These two guys have been with The Floating World since the beginning. A
Jack of all Trades you can find them helping out all over; using their time
to help with construction, vending, registration, Ops, security where ever
needed, whenever called upon.
Sparky is a co founder of Life in Nassau which is a sponsoring group of
Floating World, and is also an active member in Staten Island Kink, Suffolk
Supper Munch, Triad, Mast LI and Black Phoenix. Boyd participates in Triad,
ACDS, The Gate, and is a founding member and staff of Black Phoenix.
