President’s Letter
The heat of August may seem a
long way from the refreshingly cool air
of November, but for many in Historic
Kenwood, now is the time when we
swing into high gear planning for our
16th annual BungalowFest on Saturday and Sunday, November 1 and
2 under the chairmanship of Julie
Longstreth. You’ll notice we’ve moved
back the evening event and day home
tour one day each to avoid competing
with Halloween on Friday, October 31.
Saturday evening’s street party will be
staged on the 7th Avenue “boulevard”
between 29th and 30th streets with
its twin roadways and wide separating median to give us extra room. The
event will have the usual superb mix of
delicious food from local eateries accented by live music. If you own a local
restaurant or know someone who does
that might be interested in participating in the event, please contact Dianne
Caton at [email protected]
The evening event will also feature
a celebration of Historic Kenwood’s
premier visual and performing artists.
Under the co-chair of Dianne Caton
and Sallie Hackett Brown, the works of
visual artists will be presented inside
a generously-sized living room of the
host home overlooking the street party
whose furniture will have been cleared
out for the event. Performing artists will
be given venues in the home’s back
yard, including poolside. Artists wishing to present on Saturday evening
and during Sunday’s home tour are
encouraged to contact Grandy Smith at
[email protected].
Sunday’s home tour will, of course,
represent the heart of our BungalowFest celebration. This year, we will feature homes west of 28th Street, lying
both north and south of 5th Avenue.
Jim Longstreth, home search chair,
and Kathy Young are now on the hunt
for the best of the best for our tour.
If you’re interested in showing your
home, as owner or tenant, or know
someone who may be, please email
Jim or Kathy at jimsellsstpete@
gmail.com or [email protected].
Speaking from personal experience, there’s no substitute for kick
starting and completing your home
project list than knowing you’ll be
on display for hundreds to enjoy.
BungalowFest is also a time
for our local businesses to promote themselves and acquire new
clientele through advertising in our
BungalowFest brochure given to all
who attend the home tour. Our tour
brochure has become an increasingly popular year-round directory
of local businesses. We distribute
copies at monthly meetings and,
most recently, at our St. Pete Pride
Festival booth where our entire supply of over a hundred was snapped
up by Festival attendees. This year,
we are encouraging advertisers to
include coupons with ads to assist
in demographic tracking. Ad prices
remain unchanged from last year.
For further information, contact
Bobbie Talley at bobbietalley2@aol.
com.
It’s been said so often about
Historic Kenwood, including most
recently by Mayor Kriseman, that
we exemplify one of St. Pete’s best
run neighborhoods. The word “sustainable” is often used to describe
our many annual events, strong
involvement, ever-present fun and,
ultimately, love of neighborhood.
BungalowFest is both a fuel and a
prize that most strongly exemplifies
all these qualities. So as we push
toward the final stretch of preparation, here’s your chance as an artist, homeowner, renter or business
to show with pride your best assets
to our neighborhood and to the
many hundreds who will come from
throughout Tampa Bay and beyond.

Brooklyn South is a Big Hit
Give Someone A Pat on the Back
June attendees for the HKNA meeting were
treated to an abundant and delicious array of gourmet
cheeses and sausages provided by Brooklyn South
- Cheese, Meats & Foods. Matt Bonano, the owner,
recently opened his gourmet shop which features
cheeses, meats and foods for the connoisseur. And,
as luck would have it, there just happened to be some
wine left over from Pinot in the Park. Together - WOW
- what a combination. Thank You, Matt, for the sampling of some of the finest cheeses and sausages
ever displayed at our meetings. Brooklyn South is
conveniently located at 1437 Central Ave. The phone
number is (718) 755-3003. Or visit [email protected]. Brooklyn South also is a current
“ad sponsor” in the Historic Kenwood News. Don’t
forget that when you visit Matt to let him know “HKNA
sent you!” – Dave Hollowell
We live in one of those neighborhoods where people
look out for each other all the time. So we may become
blind to some of the good deeds that we
see every day. Take time to recognize
a neighbor who did a good
deed for someone else or
maybe someone who has
really worked hard on fixing
up their home and garden.
Most of you frequent local
businesses along Grand
Central and Downtown; do
you know of a business that has done something to support the neighborhood? Who wouldn’t like a pat on the
back for a job well done? Let Audrey know if you would
like to recognize someone with a Great Neighbor, Home
and Garden or Great Business award by emailing Audrey
Wood: [email protected]. — Carolyn Gambuti

Great Neighbor Award
Karen and Matt Wiseman
212 30th Street N.
Part of the Pride parade runs through our neighborhood,
along 3rd Avenue N. and up 30th Street, as it makes its way
down to Central Avenue. With this year’s parade being at
night for the first time, the idea was to light up the neighborhood along those streets to make for a more festive atmosphere. While there were a few outstanding displays, the
one that caught my eye was the Wiseman’s display of over
the top colored Christmas lights. It really helped to ramp up
the festivities. As a parade walker, I know it was enjoyed by
all that night. — Bill Heyen

Featured GCD Business
Painting with Fire Studio and Gallery was the Grand
Central Featured Business of the month at our General
Meeting in July, and we would like to give a special thank
you to Barbara and Jim Lewis. Barbara surprised everyone with a live demonstration of her specialty, torch firing
enamel beads. The Painting with Fire Studio is located at
2428 Central Avenue, and Barbara is an award winning author. Her book, Torch-Fired Enamel Jewelry: a Workshop in
Painting with Fire, was recognized as the Best Craft Book
of 2011 by Amazon! Barbara and her team teach students
the art of torch firing enamel beads and pendants and
classes are available along with specialty enamels, vintage
beads and other jewelry and metal working supplies. Stop
by and visit this colorful, “really nice people” studio and say
hello to Barbara and Jim, who are also residents of Historic
Kenwood. See for yourself the fascinating and innovative approach to creating this beautiful art. For additional

New Restaurant Coming
to 2900 Block of Central
Our city’s revitalization continues to
head west into the
Grand Central District. Pom Pom’s
Teahouse and Sandwicheria, located on the corner of
Central Avenue and 30th Street, has a projected opening
date sometime in August. Some of their food combinations are out of this world and the tastes are amazing
— like a collaboration between the Mad Hatter and Willy
Wonka. They have custom pressed sandwiches, salads
with handmade salad dressings, unique sides, custom
blended loose leaf teas, local beer, wines, and desserts.
Owner Tom Woodard has been a longtime fan of Pom
Pom’s original location in the Milk District of Orlando,
whose owner has worked for such NYC restaurants as
Robert DeNiro’s NoBu, and the famous transvestite restaurant, Lucky Changs. When Tom retired from the
Orange County Sheriff’s Office, he immediately started
talks about opening a second location in St. Petersburg.
Pom Pom’s will be open seven days a week. Check out
their web site pompomsstpete.com for the menu, photos,
updates on hiring, and opening.Swing by for a great meal
and tasty desert! — Jeff Schorr
Known as the Queen of Kenwood in real estate circles, Debbie Cunningham has been servicing the Historic Kenwood neighborhood's real
estate needs for over 20 years. Through times of both hardship and
growth, Debbie has remained consistent in her commitment to the area
she worked so hard to help build. From purchasing her very first home,
to watching her children grow up there, and even opening her first real
estate brokerage in the district, Historic Kenwood will always hold a
special place in her heart. Debbie always has a steady supply of buyers
attempting to join our great neighborhood, but the current lack of Kenwood property on the market has kept them waiting. If you or someone
you know is planning to sell, please don't hesitate to call her directly at
(727) 460-5418. She can help you determine the true value of your home in today’s market and take
you step by step through the sale of your home.

Now is a good a time to join your association.
Not only is HKNA a great social network, but in
the recent past, we have been active in supporting the no-solicitation ordinance, expanded the
Crime Watch program, have worked with the
Nuisance Abatement board, hosted a candidate
forum, networked with businesses coming into
the area to further the interests of the neighborhood, and provided a forum for the concerns of
residents to be heard.
There is strength in numbers and we can’t do
this alone. Please fill out the below form and return to the PO Box or bring it to the next monthly
