Not only does Katharin Czink ’91 love her job, she’s pretty good at it.
Czink has earned two coveted Emmy Awards for medical segments she
produced at WGN News in Chicago, one of the largest and most competitive television markets in the country. “I work closely with the
medical reporter to put these stories together,” Czink says, “but as the
producer, I’m responsible for the bulk of the research, interviews and
field work. It’s a great gig.”
Each day I have the opportunity to continue learning —
about medicine and research and life and death.

I came to Augustana in 1987 knowing I would major in English and go on to be a journalist. Over the course of four years that conviction did not
change except during a brief and misguided period when I fantasized about
law school. So I went about my business,
filling fall, winter and spring terms with
the appropriate credits — Modern Fiction,
Shakespeare and as many writing tutorials and journalism courses as I could
squeeze into my schedule. Then, during
my junior year, I discovered an entirely
new world (and building) — science.
That’s when I began combining
Parkander’s Chaucer with Tallitsch’s
Human Anatomy and Tweet’s TwentiethCentury Literature with Turnquist’s
Principles of Physiology. Certainly I
wasn’t organic chem-worthy or even 400-level biology material like my premed friends, but basic science had struck
a chord with me. And at the time I had
absolutely no idea that the coursework
would become so valuable.

Fast forward several years later. Today
my work is a reflection of my undergrad
combination, but not by design. In no
way did I ever imagine writing and science could blend together so well and
unearth an interest I didn’t even know I possessed. I truly credit my professors at Augie. I believe the combination of
English and science fostered my love of
writing about medicine. From my first job after graduation to my work today as medical producer at WGN News in
Chicago, science has become my beat.
One of the best perks of my work is the access. I have access to medical institutions, laboratories, surgeons and
scientists — people I find completely fascinating. My job is to interview them and
learn about the research they are conducting or the latest techniques they are using in the operating room. Then I write about their work and help put
their stories on television each night.
My job has led me to places and people I’ve never imagined. I’ve traveled
to a remote village in Alaska where I
spent three days with teen-age paramedics, 14- and 15-year-old girls who fight
fires and deliver medical care in a tiny
town with no doctor. I’ve interviewed
Iraqi physicians who came to Chicago to learn reconstructive surgery techniques
so they could return home and mend
patients severely injured from the war.
I’ve visited the laboratory where the very
first embryonic stem cells were isolated.
There I interviewed scientists who are
implanting newly formed neural cells
into the brains of primates bred with
Parkinson’s disease.
I’ve covered internet-fueled drug
abuse, spinal cord injury (in dogs!) and pediatric skin cancer. And then there are the patients who have allowed
our cameras to capture their most private
moments — at their bedsides before they
are wheeled into heart surgery or in the
labor-and-delivery room during childbirth. To be a part of it all is such an
honor.
I wish I could say I meticulously plotted my career path. But the truth is
I’m just lucky. Each day I get to do something I love and that I find fascinating.
Each day I have the opportunity to continue learning — about medicine and
research and life and death. And now
that I think about it, maybe that’s the
best part of the job.

“Elisa calls us and we put her in touch with
the regional organ bank,” Czink says. “It
turns out she is right.” Weeks later with the
help of WGN, the two meet each other.
Czink’s crew captures the emotional visit on camera.
To this day Elisa and Brian remain close friends. “The
story turned out to be a once-in-a-lifetime situation, and
hopefully we were able to raise awareness of organ donation as well,” Czink adds.

How easy, and how safe, is it to buy strong, addictive medications on the Web? With her mother’s credit card and her permission, a 12-year-old girl is asked to buy Vicodin, Valium and
Darvon over the internet. Even without a prescription, her order is
filled with no questions. “Websites promise online doctors will fill
your prescription, but in many cases the drugs are coming from overseas and the medication may not be what you bargained for,” Czink
explains. The series also showed how U.S. Customs agents screen tiny
packages believed to be narcotics coming into the country.
“The DEA is trying to fight the internet drug war,
but officials admit the vast ring of dealers on the
Web are eluding authorities,” Czink says.

A 1958 Augustana graduate continues to draw attention to the vanishing
American prairie. The University of Iowa Press has published two decades of
George Olson’s drawings and watercolors in the book The Elemental Prairie:
Sixty Tallgrass Plants. The book, which also features “The Running Country,”
an essay by John Madsen, presents 60 images of tallgrass plants, from the
familiar purple coneflower to the less common rattlesnake master. “George
Olson and John Madsen are the artist laureate and poet laureate of the prairie,” says Robert McCracken Peck, senior fellow and librarian, Academy
of Natural Sciences. “They capture its beauty, complexity and magic in
ways that allow us to really see and feel and understand this uniquely
American habitat and all that it represents.”

Dr. Dorothy Parkander —first person to be appointed to the first fully endowed
academic chair in the history of the college, first woman to have an academic
chair named after her when her former students raised the money to do so —
pause for breath — celebrated her 80th birthday last March.
Parkander, a member of the Class of 1946, taught in Augustana’s English
Department from 1947 to 1996. Close to 150 former students and Augustana
associates sent birthday wishes to her,

“I’m honored and grateful, and very proud of Jan’s achievements,” Parkander says.
A few months after Parkander’s birthday,
Bowman visited campus to read from her new collection of poetry entitled Carved Like
Runes. Karen Herseth Wee wrote the book’s
foreword, so it was only fitting that her
daughter, Rebecca Wee, former Quad Cities
Poet Laureate and an assistant professor of
English at Augustana, introduce Bowman.
At the reading, Bowman asked the audience’s permission to read a poem not
included in her newly published book. Much
to the delight of those gathered at the library,
Bowman read the piece she wrote for her former professor entitled “What I’d Like to Tell Dorothy.” The allusions are to The
Odyssey, which Parkander taught with great
love and success for many years.

A few months after Parkander’s birthday,
Bowman visited campus to read from her new collection of poetry entitled Carved Like
Runes. Karen Herseth Wee wrote the book’s
foreword, so it was only fitting that her
daughter, Rebecca Wee, former Quad Cities
Poet Laureate and an assistant professor of
English at Augustana, introduce Bowman.
At the reading, Bowman asked the audience’s permission to read a poem not
included in her newly published book. Much
to the delight of those gathered at the library,
Bowman read the piece she wrote for her former professor entitled “What I’d Like to Tell Dorothy.” The allusions are to The
Odyssey, which Parkander taught with great
love and success for many years.

Education classes at Augustana prepared her well, Sticca says, but
there’s nothing like standing in front of 23 first-graders in an actual
classroom. When MacDonald eventually gave her full responsibility for the class, Sticca was slightly surprised but extremely grateful.
“Suddenly I have this class but it worked out fine, and it gave me a lot
of confidence,” she says. “Christine and I worked well together from
the first day of school so it was a fairly seamless operation.”
Sticca led the first-graders through a unit on plants by herself. “I
enjoy hands-on science projects so this was especially fun for me,” she
says. After the students completed the unit, she videotaped them as
they pointed out the parts of a plant and explained how seeds grow.
“That meant a lot to me because they really got it!”
She always knew teaching was time-consuming, but her
Augustana friends were shocked at how much time she spent preparing lessons. Students can tell if a teacher comes in unprepared, Sticca
says. “If you want to be flexible and be able to respond to students’
interests, you have to be organized,” she adds. “Christine’s classroom
is so organized, any teacher can walk in and begin teaching.”
Today, Sticca has 23 first-graders of her own at Fiske Elementary
School in Chicago, near the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Her biggest challenge so far has been creating an organized classroom
that works for her and her students. Her experience at Eugene Field
gave her a resource to deal with the challenges she’s encountering.
Whether it’s moving students’ desks into small groups rather than
rows or sending a newsletter home to parents every Monday, Sticca
can build on ideas she has seen in action.
“I tried to share with her the knowledge I’ve gained over the
course of my career, both positive and negative,” MacDonald says.
“Most of all, I wanted her to realize that all kids can learn…a good
teacher has to find out how to help them.”

Once upon a time…
Augustana graduates are always doing interesting things, but how many can say
they’ve renovated a house with a member of royalty? Elizabeth Burke ’01 may be in a
class by herself after teaming up with Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, for a special
episode of the home design show While You Were Out on The Learning Channel (TLC).
At the time, Burke was a development associate with the Illinois division of SOS
Children’s Villages, an international non-profit child welfare agency that builds villages for children who have been removed from their biological families due to abuse,
neglect and/or abandonment. Unlike traditional foster care, SOS reunites children with
their siblings to live together with a trained
SOS foster parent until they reach adulthood,
Burke says.
SOS Children’s Villages Illinois consists of
two sites, one in Lockport and a relatively new
one on the south side of Chicago, which is the
first urban foster care village in the world.
“Fergie is SOS’s national spokesperson,
and she joined forces with TLC’s While You Were
Out to redecorate an entire house in Lockport
Village,” Burke says.
The surprise makeover was in the home
of an extraordinary SOS mother who took in
a group of eight siblings at Lockport Village
Elizabeth Burke ’01 and Sarah Ferguson
in 1995. After the two oldest siblings were
grown and moved out on their own, she legally
adopted the six youngest and accepted another 10-year-old child into her family. Burke
says everyone was inspired by this woman’s commitment to children in need, prompting SOS-USA, TLC and Ferguson to coordinate the home makeover.
This is the first time the program has taken on such an extensive renovation, as
well as the first time the show has been hosted by a royal celebrity.
“Fergie was so wonderful and gracious, even after working around the clock for 48 hours helping to get the house done in time,” Burke says.

Current students might take it as a word of caution: be careful what you pick as a topic for
that next paper. It just might turn into a career. When Anders Carlson ’00 had to write a
paper for Dr. Jeff Strasser’s geomorphology course, he thought he’d found a rather obscure
subject in the retreat of the Canadian ice sheet. Little did he know.
During graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, Carlson found that little was, in
fact, all anyone knew about the disappearance of the Laurentide Ice Sheet from northern
Canada. Now a doctoral student at Oregon State University, Carlson received the J. Hoover
Mackin Award from the Geological Society of America (G.S.A.) to support his research into
the long-gone glacier.
“We’ve sort of assumed that it was gone by about 7,000 years ago, but no one really
knows when it disappeared,” Carlson says. Or, for that matter, exactly why it disappeared.
And finding those answers might help scientists better understand not just the past, but
the future as well.
“There are two remaining ice sheets on a scale of the Laurentide—the one covering
Greenland and the one covering Antarctica. If Greenland’s were to melt, you’d see a sixmeter rise in global sea level. If Antarctica’s disappears, we’re talking about a 60- to 70meter rise,” he says. “So long, New York.”
Not that such a cataclysm is imminent, but Carlson’s work in describing the retreat of the
Canadian ice sheet may help us understand recent increases in sea level—whether they’re
related to melt in Greenland or Antarctica, and whether they’re due to anthropogenic
causes or natural processes.
According to Strasser, this represents a massive project for a Ph.D. thesis. “But Anders
has the self-motivation and determination to accomplish it. When he sees a problem, he
just attacks it,” Strasser says. “He’s well-deserving of the Mackin Award because of those
qualities.”

Sheet disappeared approximately 6,800 years ago. “The disappearance was rapid, and the
ice sheet wasted in less than 700 years,” he says. “This shows how sensitive ice sheets are
to a warming climate and suggests that the Greenland Ice Sheet may be similarly sensitive to
global warming…not good for the future.”

Once upon a time…
Augustana graduates are always doing interesting things, but how many can say
they’ve renovated a house with a member of royalty? Elizabeth Burke ’01 may be in a
class by herself after teaming up with Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, for a special
episode of the home design show While You Were Out on The Learning Channel (TLC).
At the time, Burke was a development associate with the Illinois division of SOS
Children’s Villages, an international non-profit child welfare agency that builds villages for children who have been removed from their biological families due to abuse,
neglect and/or abandonment. Unlike traditional foster care, SOS reunites children with
their siblings to live together with a trained
SOS foster parent until they reach adulthood,
Burke says.
SOS Children’s Villages Illinois consists of
two sites, one in Lockport and a relatively new
one on the south side of Chicago, which is the
first urban foster care village in the world.
“Fergie is SOS’s national spokesperson,
and she joined forces with TLC’s While You Were
Out to redecorate an entire house in Lockport
Village,” Burke says.
The surprise makeover was in the home
of an extraordinary SOS mother who took in
a group of eight siblings at Lockport Village
Elizabeth Burke ’01 and Sarah Ferguson
in 1995. After the two oldest siblings were
grown and moved out on their own, she legally
adopted the six youngest and accepted another 10-year-old child into her family. Burke
says everyone was inspired by this woman’s commitment to children in need, prompting SOS-USA, TLC and Ferguson to coordinate the home makeover.
This is the first time the program has taken on such an extensive renovation, as
well as the first time the show has been hosted by a royal celebrity.
“Fergie was so wonderful and gracious, even after working around the clock for 48 hours helping to get the house done in time,” Burke says.

Illinois. But every day he goes to work as part of the Teach for America Corps, he does so with the knowledge he’s doing his part
to address a problem with potentially critical consequences for our society.

When he completes his two-year commitment, Betzelberger says he’d like to continue working with Teach for America, possibly as a recruiter in addition to teaching. Actually, that process has already started. On September 22, he was on campus as part of an alumni panel at the college’s weekly convocation. Betzelberger talked about how his Augustana experience helped
him discover his true vocation.

In memoriam
J. Iverne Dowie, 93
An extraordinary member of the Augustana community, Dr. J. Iverne
Dowie died February 14. Blind since the age of 2, Dowie was already something of a celebrity at Augustana when he enrolled here in 1932. He had
been a featured soloist with the Augustana Band on its 1928 European tour,
during which some audiences were incredulous that the violin could be
played so well by a sightless adolescent. Tests of both his blindness and his virtuosity were required at several venues.
Graduating with honors in 1936, Dowie then completed his master’s
in history at the University of Chicago, and later his Ph.D. from the
University of Minnesota. He taught at the Augustana Synod’s Luther
Junior College in Nebraska from 1941 to 1958, and even served one year as acting president of the institution.
Dowie taught in the History Department at Augustana from 1958
to 1979, and served as its chair from 1969 to 1976. After retiring, Dowie
became one of the first clients of APRIS, the Augustana Public Radio
Information Service, a reading program for persons with visual and other
disabilities which is housed by WVIK, Augustana’s public radio station.
One additional note: not only did Dowie walk from his home at 80041st Street to campus, day in and day out for 21 years, but when the house
needed re-roofing, he did it himself.
Gertrude Lundholm, 92
As one longtime friend describes her, Gertrude Lundholm was an avid
reader who was quite knowledgeable and “always raring to go.” She
received her diploma from Augustana in 1941. Four years later, she married
Brynolf “Beany” Lundholm, professor of music and accompanist for the
Augustana Choir and the Handel Oratorio Society for many years.
The Lundholm home often was a gathering place for students, especially when their children — Mark ’70, Peter ’71 and Martha Lundholm
’78 Jansson — attended Augustana. In the Summer 1984 issue of Augustana
College Magazine, the Rev. Tom Church ’68 wrote of the Lundholms on the
occasion of Beany’s death: “The Lundholm house on 34th Street became
my home away from home. We talked about everything from girlfriend
problems to vocational goals. In a sense, some of the credit for my being in the ordained ministry to this day belongs to Beany and Gertrude.”
Following her graduation from Augustana, Gertrude taught elementary
school in Stanton, Iowa, and special education at the state school in Glenwood, Iowa. Later, she was a teacher at Longfellow Elementary School in
Rock Island. She volunteered at Holden Village, an ecumenical Christian
center for renewal, in Chelan, Wash., for 40-plus summers.
“To say that the Lundholm family were fanatics about Holden Village
would be an understatement!” Church said. “But finally I caved in and
applied for a summer staff position. I too am a Holden fanatic.”
Gertrude also was a longstanding member of First Lutheran Church in Moline and the Endowment Society of Augustana. She died June 30 in Rock Island.

J. Iverne Dowie, 93
An extraordinary member of the Augustana community, Dr. J. Iverne
Dowie died February 14. Blind since the age of 2, Dowie was already something of a celebrity at Augustana when he enrolled here in 1932. He had
been a featured soloist with the Augustana Band on its 1928 European tour,
during which some audiences were incredulous that the violin could be
played so well by a sightless adolescent. Tests of both his blindness and his virtuosity were required at several venues.
Graduating with honors in 1936, Dowie then completed his master’s
in history at the University of Chicago, and later his Ph.D. from the
University of Minnesota. He taught at the Augustana Synod’s Luther
Junior College in Nebraska from 1941 to 1958, and even served one year as acting president of the institution.
Dowie taught in the History Department at Augustana from 1958
to 1979, and served as its chair from 1969 to 1976. After retiring, Dowie
became one of the first clients of APRIS, the Augustana Public Radio
Information Service, a reading program for persons with visual and other
disabilities which is housed by WVIK, Augustana’s public radio station.
One additional note: not only did Dowie walk from his home at 80041st Street to campus, day in and day out for 21 years, but when the house
needed re-roofing, he did it himself.
Gertrude Lundholm, 92
As one longtime friend describes her, Gertrude Lundholm was an avid
reader who was quite knowledgeable and “always raring to go.” She
received her diploma from Augustana in 1941. Four years later, she married
Brynolf “Beany” Lundholm, professor of music and accompanist for the
Augustana Choir and the Handel Oratorio Society for many years.
The Lundholm home often was a gathering place for students, especially when their children — Mark ’70, Peter ’71 and Martha Lundholm
’78 Jansson — attended Augustana. In the Summer 1984 issue of Augustana
College Magazine, the Rev. Tom Church ’68 wrote of the Lundholms on the
occasion of Beany’s death: “The Lundholm house on 34th Street became
my home away from home. We talked about everything from girlfriend
problems to vocational goals. In a sense, some of the credit for my being in the ordained ministry to this day belongs to Beany and Gertrude.”
Following her graduation from Augustana, Gertrude taught elementary
school in Stanton, Iowa, and special education at the state school in Glenwood, Iowa. Later, she was a teacher at Longfellow Elementary School in
Rock Island. She volunteered at Holden Village, an ecumenical Christian
center for renewal, in Chelan, Wash., for 40-plus summers.
“To say that the Lundholm family were fanatics about Holden Village
would be an understatement!” Church said. “But finally I caved in and
applied for a summer staff position. I too am a Holden fanatic.”
Gertrude also was a longstanding member of First Lutheran Church in Moline and the Endowment Society of Augustana. She died June 30 in Rock Island.

flies the EA-6B Prowler, which provides an umbrella of protection for strike
aircraft, ground troops and ships by jamming enemy radar, electronic data
links and communications. Velez has flown combat missions in Operation
Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The following is his account of relief efforts following the December 26 massive earthquake and devastating
tsunamis in the Bay of Bengal.
I never thought i would be selected as one of the first
Americans to aid in the post-tsunami humanitarian relief efforts. After
all, I really didn’t have the skills my commanding officer needed, such as
foreign language skills or training in advanced first-aid. In fact, I didn’t
write down much on the volunteer assessment sheet—just some construction skills, basic first-aid and time spent as a physical therapy assistant.
Perhaps he wanted more intangible qualities.
When our aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln,
arrived off the north shore of Indonesia on New Year’s
Day, I was in the first wave of helicopters (helos) sent to
establish a logistical hub and move relief supplies from
the Banda Aceh airport. Not knowing what to expect as
we lifted off the flight deck, we quickly caught a glimpse
of the destruction. Numerous corpses floated in the water.
Proceeding further inland, we were amazed that the
coastal town was obliterated. You could see outlines of the foundations of homes. As the earthquake shook them
loose, the tsunamis washed everything out to sea.
At the airport, we found near chaos. No infrastructure
for relief efforts was in place. About 500 Indonesians had
made their way to the airport in search of food, water and a flight out of the area. A few Australians and the
Indonesian military had established a base, and were
accepting supplies. But they did not have helos to move the food and water.
As a Prowler pilot with no helicopter-flying abilities, I was initially sent in to be the liaison to move supplies
along the west coast. Quickly realizing there was no one
to actually liaise with, my executive officer and I became the
primary ground coordinators to
make this relief effort happen.
Working with the
Indonesians and the civilian
relief agencies, we established a system to have 12 helos flying from sunrise to sunset. The helos ferried everything from biscuits, rice, noodles,
milk and water to medical supplies. We transported medical staff, as
well. As our pilots dropped off supplies, Indonesian citizens rushed to
hug them with relief and joy.
Finally our helos were authorized to airlift any injured people they
found backВ to Banda Aceh. Their arrival was the most intense experience
of my life. These people had been hanging in trees, stuck on mountainsides or crawling on broken roads for days. Some of them were missing
limbs. Some of them were near death. Many of them were children.
The first time I ran to a helo with a stretcher, I felt like everything was in slow motion as the helo’s door opened. I stood and stared in awe because I couldn’t believe how many people were inside. Almost 20
injured men, women and children were piled on top of each other. I just
put it out of my head and helped run them to a tent for treatment. Once

were walking along a street in Siem Reap. One
of Jeffrey’s friends gave a cookie to a 10-year-old
boy who was missing a leg, probably from polio.
The boy immediately broke the cookie into four
pieces to share with his friends. When he was
then given a package of cookies, a crowd of children gathered and the bounty was shared
evenly.
“To me, that’s the epitome of Cambodian culture,” Ryder says. “The children take care of
each other because they see themselves in each
other. Their parents can’t take care of them
because they don’t have the money or they’re off
trying to work somewhere. That’s why I became
involved with the monks’ project at Wat
Damnak Pagoda.”
Somnieng Hoeurn is the head monk at Wat
Damnak Pagoda, a Buddhist temple in Siem
Reap. When he met Ryder last January, there was an instant connection between the two men.
When Hoeurn asked Ryder to help him take care
of the children of Siem Reap Province, Ryder
couldn’t refuse. The Life and Hope Association
assistance program, based at Wat Damnak
Pagoda, provides basic living assistance and educational opportunities to destitute children,
including orphans and street children. If the
children learn English, for example, they have a better chance of getting a job in tourism.
“Dr. Ryder is very important and useful man
for developing my program, the kind of man that
my children and I need,” Hoeurn says. “He is
full of skills and experiences, and most important he is a very good, kind man, and this world
needs the people like him. I should not say that
he is a dentist and a rich man…as you know,
there are many rich men and women in the
world, but they don’t do as him. Why?
“In the Buddhism way, we can say that Dr.
Ryder already has a name as a wise man, as this
is how this kind of person always has done for
this world.”
Ryder says he is not so much religious as he is philosophical. He enjoys finding answers to
life’s problems.
However he’s described, Ryder’s life has been transformed by a remarkable commitment
to less fortunate communities around the world.
And perhaps more importantly, he has channeled
his vision with perseverance, and a rare ability
to follow through. In Cambodia, or any other
country, people like Jon Ryder make a difference.

Let me tell you about one moment of joy
in his life that maybe, I guess, I’m the
only one who knows about. It was an
October day, about four or five years ago.
He and I always took a fall bike trip for
three or four days. We had about 20 miles
to go that day. The sky was deep October
blue. The wind was on our backs, but we
were getting tired. We stopped to rest in a small Illinois town along the border of
Wisconsin; somewhere up near Freeport
and Rockford, to eat a power bar. We
found ourselves leaning against the iron

“Much has been said this week about
Swanie’s listening and counseling…about
his capacity to be completely present to
the person with whom he found himself.
And maybe that’s why he was such a help to so many people. Because he had moments in his life of hurting and wondering and being afraid, like we all do. But I can tell you too that he had
times of great joy and great happiness and
to be near him when he was exuding that
happiness and joy was one of the greatest
experiences many of us have ever had….

the catechism gives this answer for those
early Christian children to learn. The
chief end of man is to glorify God and
enjoy Him forever. �Oh, Treddy,’ Swanie
said to me. �To glorify God and enjoy
Him forever.’ And he leapt up on his Trek
bicycle and sped off down the road as he
always was, way ahead of me, yelling over
his shoulder, �Enjoy Him forever!’”
