Descendants of Theobald Or Dewald Klingler Generation No. 1 1. THEOBALD OR DEWALD1 KLINGLER was born Abt. 1714 in Near Weingarten, Germany. He married MARIA CATHERINE GOLBERT, daughter of HEINRCH GOLBERT and ANNA GEISS. Notes for THEOBALD OR DEWALD KLINGLER: I received the following information from Lila Jean Cambell which I note here for future research: "The children of Adams family in Perry Co. Ohio said the only Cousin they could remember visiting in PA was a cousin, Peter, who lived near the Schuylkill Mts. or river. I see you have a Peter b.1797 who would have been about the age of Adam's children. Do you know of any connection to the Klingers who lived in the same areas of PA.? One reference I saw said they were related through the Heist sisters and I also wondered about our Theobald whose wife's mother was Anna Rosina Geiss. the Alexander Klinger who immigrated here after theobald was married to Anna Elizabeth Geiss, whose father was Johann Adam Geiss and mother, Eva Grall. I will have to do some research on the areas from which they came. Theobald/Dewald born about 1714 in Southwestern Germany near a town called Weingarten which was only a few miles from the border of Switzerland. Near the Lake of Constance and just a few miles west of the Danube River. Debalt emigrated to escape Persecution as a Protestant. His path started at Weingarten in Wuerttemberg and continued north through the Palatinate, then to the Netherlands. His ship landed on 20th day of Sept. 1738 along with 130 other German immigrants. He was given the Qualified Oath at the Old Philadelphia Courthouse by 4 "Esquires" Clement Plumsted, Samuel Hassel, Andrew Hamilton, Thomas Griffith. He was 24 years old. His wife, Maria Catherine Golbert was evidently with him as their son, John, was born in Phila. in Dec. 1738. Reference: "The Moyer Family" by Rudolph Isaac Moyer in Union Co., Historical Soc. He married C ATHERINE ELISABETH BAIER April 14, 1784 in Berks Co, PA. She was born December 31, 1761 in Pennsylvania, and died March 02, 1847 in Brown Co., Ohio. (see end of these notes) Pension Records, National Archives, John was a Corporal ind 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment during the Revolution, discharged 17 January 1781. 4 March 1843 - 3 March 1847, pension No. W 4009 to widow was $88 per anum, Catherine appllied at the age of 85. John Klingler,Sr.(267 was born in PA in 1758. Revolutionary War Pension File Application indicates he served during the Revolutionary War. Marriage Records of Christ Church Tulpebochen Township,Berks Co.,PA indicate he married Catherine Elisabeth Baier 4/14/1784. Berks Co.,PA 1790 Census Records indicate that he, his wife, one son, and one daughter were living in Berks Co.,PA (Pinegrove Twnship). The family moved from PA to Mason Co.,KY in 1795. When they moved to KY they had at least one son, John Jr. (#20) and one daughter, Elizabeth (#270) and probably one other son, Frederick (#271). They later had two more children, Peter (#272) and Susan (#268). Susan was born in KY, 1800. The 1800 Census of Mason Co.,KY shows that he was still there. the eldest son John,Jr(#20), born 2/22/1787 in PA, married: Rachel Fee (#274) in Bracken Co.,KY on 8/11/1808. JOHN KLINGLER, SR (#267) MOVED HIS FAMILY TO CLERMONT COUNTY OHIO. THEY LIVED ON A FARM WHICH THEY OWNED IN WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP. THIS MOVE WAS MADE PRIOR TO 1810 BECAUSE HE IS SHOWN ON THE 1810 TAX LIST FOR CLERMONT COUNTY. (PROBABLY PRIOR TO 1803 BECAUSE A JOHN CLINGLER IS REFERRED TO IN "ELECTION 1803 IN CLERMONT COUNTY) HIS PROPERTY CAN BE LOCATED ON A CLERMONT 1815 MAP WHERE IT IS IDENTIFIED BY A NUMBER 765. (IT APPEARS THAT THE ELDEST SON JOHN (#20) ALSO MOVED TO CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO PRIOR TO 6/22/1809 WHEN HIS FIRST CHILD JOSHUA (#275) WAS BORN. HE AND HIS WIFE MAY HAVE MOVED TO OHIO WITH HIS PARENTS BUT BY 1820 HE WAS LIVING SEPARATELY. MORE ABOUT JOHN, JR (#20) LATER) IN A "HISTORY OF CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO-1880", PAGE 81, UNDER "COMMISSIONERS' EARLY PROCEEDINGS" THE FOLLOWING REFERENCE APPEARS "MARCH TERM, 1812, ------ON THE PROPOSED ROAD BEGINNING NEAR THE MOUTH OF INDIAN CREEK, THENCE UP THE SAME, PASSING "ABRAM'S MILL", THENCE NEAR JOHN LOWE'S PLANTATION, BY THAT OF JOHN KLINGLER, AND BETWEEN STEPHEN FRAZEE AND PETER MCCLAIN, AND PASSING THOMAS CARTER, TO INTERSECT THE COUNTY ROAD NEAR KELLY BURK'S MILL,THOMAS MARSH, JOHN BOGGESS, AND JOHN LOWE WERE THE VIEWERS WITH BOGGESS AS SURVEYOR" (RECORDS INDICATE THAT SON PETER KLINGLER (#272) MARRIED PHEBE FRAZEE IN CLERMONT COUNTY, 2/15/1816. THIS WAS PROBABLY A DAUGHTER OF NEIGHBOR STEPHEN FRAZEE.) THE NEXT WE KNOW OF JOHN KLINGLER, SR, (#267) WAS CONTAINED IN A WILL DATED 7/2/1818 WHICH STATES AS FOLLOWS: "IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I JOHN KLINGLER OF CLERMONT COUNTY STATE 3 OF OHIO BEING WEAK IN BODY BUT OF SOUND AND PERFECT MIND AND MEMORY AND BLESSED BE ALMIGHTY GOD FOR THE SAME DO MAKE AND PUBLISH THIS MY LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT IN MANNER AND FORM FOLLOWING. I DO ALSO GIVE AND BEQUEATH UNTO MY YOUNGEST SON PETER KLINGLER TWO DOLLARS. I ALSO GIVE AND BEQUEATH UNTO MY ELDEST DAUGHTER ELIZABETH TWO DOLLARS AND I DO HEREBY APPOINT MY WIFE SOLE EXECUTRIX OF THIS MY LAST WILL BY ME MADE IN WITNESS WHEREOF I HAVE UNTO SET MY HAND AND SEAL THE SECOND DAY OF JULY IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD ONE THOUSAND AND EIGHT, 1818. JOHN ROGERS ELIZABETH ROGERS PROVED AND ORDERED FOR RECORD NOVEMBER 4, 1818" (PLEASE NOTE THAT IN THE NEXT TO LAST PARAGRAPH THE YEAR IS WRITTEN ONE THOUSAND AND EIGHT, 1818. THIS IS EXACTLY AS WRITTEN BY HAND IN THE ORIGINAL WILL. IT SEEMS OBVIOUS THAT THIS WAS MEANT TO READ EIGHTEEN RATHER THAN EIGHT BUT WAS JUST MISS WRITTEN AND THE ERROR WAS MISSED) SUSAN KLINGLER (#268) MARRIED JOHN SELVAGE IN CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO 4/13/1820 WHICH WAS JUST PRIOR TO THE CENSUS OF 1820. IN 1820 BOTH FREDERICK KLINGLER (#271) AND PETER KLINGLER (#272) WERE LIVING IN WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP OF CLERMONT COUNTY. IT APPEARS FREDERICK HAD ASSUMED CHARGE OF THE FARM AND WAS LIVING THERE 4 WITH HIS WIFE AND A MALE CHILD 0-10. HE AND HIS WIFE WERE IN THE 16-26 AGE CATEGORY. ALSO LIVING WITH FREDERICK WERE A FEMALE 45+ (HIS MOTHER KATHERINE ELIZABETH (#266)??) AND A FEMALE 26-45 (HIS SISTER ELIZABETH (#270)??) ALSO LIVING VERY NEARBY WAS BROTHER, PETER KLINGLER (#272) 16-26 YRS OLD AND HIS WIFE PHEBE FRAZEE(#273) 16-26 YEARS OLD TOGETHER WITH TWO MALE CHILDREN 0-10 YRS OLD. IN 1820 JOHN KLINGLER, JR, (#20) WAS LIVING IN OHIO TOWNSHIP WHICH WAS ADJACENT TO WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP. HE WAS IN THE 26-45 AGE CATEGORY AND WAS WITH HIS WIFE RACHEL (#274) IN THE 26-45 CATEGORY. THEY HAD 4 MALE CHILDREN 0-10, 2 MALES 10-16, AND 1 FEMALE 0-10. THIS FAMILY WILL BE COVERED IN MORE DETAIL UNDER JOHN KLINGLER, JR (#20) LATER. IN THE "HISTORY OF CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO-1880" THERE IS A LIST OF PROPERTY HOLDERS IN 1826. THIS LIST INCLUDES JOHN KLINGLER (#20) AND FREDERICK KLINGLER (#271). ALTHOUGH THIS LIST IS FOR MONROE TOWNSHIP I SUSPECT THAT TOWNSHIPS WERE REFORMED AND PROBABLY THEY OWNED THE SAME PROPERTY WHICH THEY HAD AT THE 1820 CENSUS. (THIS WILL BE RESEARCHED AT A LATER DATE.) THE 1820 CENSUS INDICATES THAT FREDERICK (#271) AND PETER (#272) WERE IN AGRICULTURE AND THAT JOHN (#20) WAS IN MANUFACTURING. THERE WAS NO TRACE OF THIS FAMILY IN THE 1930 CENSUS OF CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO SERVICE PENN. That she is the widow of John Clingler who was a Corporal in the Third Regiment of Pennsylvania as an inlisted soldier in the war of the revolution and was discharged on the 17th day of January 1781 She states that she has always understood and verily believes that the said John was a soldier in the service of the United States prior to his said enlistment and served most all the time of the revolutionary war that he was at the battle of Bunker hill, Brandywine, Germantown and several others that she cannot now recollect. She states that she has often heard her said husband tell what officers he was under and describe the battles he had been in but she cannot now recollect the particular, she believes the rolls and other evidence in the proper department at Washington City will fully set forth his services, She states that when she was married to this said John Clingler which happened in 1784 he had then a discharge from service signed by Anthony Wayne B.G. and a sixty dollar Continental Bill which she said John always said he had received as part of his wages as a soldier in said war and that the said discharge and Continental Bill were since in the possesion of the said John until the time of his death and they now remain with her. And she has always understood that the said John never received any land from the United States, on account of his said service. And she believes if he ever received any papers entitling him to any land they would have been lost prior to his death. She further declares that she was married to the said John Clingler on the 14th day of April seventeen hundred and eighty four by Elder Emanual Schultz in Tulpehocken Township Berks County Pennsylvania. That her husband the aforesaid John Clingler died on the 18th day of August Elighteen hundred and eighteen. That she was not married to him prior to his having the service but the marriage took place previous to the first day of January seventeen hundred and ninety four e.g. on the day and year above stated. And further that she had a record of her marriage kept by the said John which about ten years ago was burned with her family Bible when the house of son Frederick Clingler was burned. her Katharine X Clingler mark Sworn to and subscribed in open court Nov 13th 1846 John H. THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS OR APPARENT DISCREPANCIES ARISE FROM THE ABOVE TEXT: THERE IS NO EXPLANATION OF WHY THE "REV" IN THE TITLE. THE TEXT REFERS TO "MRS RACHEL KLINGLER IN THE 7TH LINE YET REFERS TO "MRS. MARGARET KLINGLER" WIFE OF JOHN KLINGLER IN THE LAST PARAGRAPH. GIVES JOHN KLINGLER BORN 2/22/1787, DIED 11/1/1848 (61 YRS OLD) YET LINE 10 STATES "MR KLINGLER DIED, AGE 80 YRS. TEXT STATES "JOHN MARRIED TO SARAH ROBACK IN 1834", RECORDS AND FAMILY INFORMATION INDICATE THAT JOHN MARRIED SALLY BABCOCK, 8/12/1832, IN MARION COUNTY, INDIANA. JOHN AND RACHEL "CAME TO MARION COUNTY, INDIANA" IN 1830 NOT 1831. THIS IS EVIDENCED BY THE 1830 CENSUS OF MARION COUNTY. ACCORDING TO THE "BOONE COUNTY MARRIAGE RECORD NO. 1-JANUARY 12 1831 TO AUGUST 1844" FRANCIS MARRIED MARY MULLEN 2/25/1841 NOT POLLY MULLEN, 8/?/1841. ACCORDING TO THE SAME MARRIAGE RECORD, POLLY MARRIED ANDERSON P. GUTHRY, 1/17/1838 OR 1839, NOT ANDERSON BUTTERY, 1837. JOHN KLINGLER, JR (#20), AS SHOWN IN PRECEDING PARAGRAPHS, HAD 12 CHILDREN BORN WHILE HE AND HIS WIFE, RACHEL (#274), LIVED IN CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO. IT APPEARS THAT SOMETIME BETWEEN 6/1/1828 AND SOMETIME IN 1829 THE FAMILY MOVED BACK TO BRACKEN COUNTY, KENTUCKY WHERE SON RICHARD P. WAS BORN. THIS MOVE IS FURTHER DOCUMENTED BY AN ENTRY IN "INDIANA ORIGINAL LAND ENTRIES, 1820-1831 VOL 3 (BROOKVILLE-INDIANAPOLIS)" FOUND IN THE MADISON INDIANA LIBRARY, GEN COL 929.3 IND. THIS ENTRY STATES THAT JOHN KLINGER #11338; STATE OF RESIDENCE, KENTUCKY; PLACE OF RESIDENCE, BRACKEN PURCHASED 160 ACRES @$1.25/ACRE IN THE NORTH EAST QUARTER OF 3E (NORTH OF WASHINGTON & CLARK COUNTIES). THIS PURCHASE WAS MADE 9/8/1830. FROM THE MAP IN THE ENTRIES BOOK THIS APPEARS TO BE IN THE NORTH CENTRAL PORTION OF MARION COUNTY INDIANA. THE 1830 CENSUS OF PIKE TOWNSHIP, MARION COUNTY, INDIANA SHOWS THAT JOHN CLINGER (KLINGLER?) WAS LIVING THERE BUT WITHOUT THE 4 YOUNGER CHILDREN. SINCE THIS CENSUS WAS TAKEN AS THEY WERE MOVING FROM BRACKEN COUNTY, KENTUCKY TO INDIANA IT SEEMS REASONABLE THAT THESE YOUNGER CHILDREN WERE LEFT WITH FAMILY BACK IN KENTUCKY OR OHIO UNTIL THEY COULD ESTABLISH A PLACE TO LIVE IT APPEARS THAT JOHN KLINGLER (#15) WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN 19 YEARS OLD IN 1830 ON THE CENSUS DATE WAS STILL LIVING WITH HIS FAMILY. IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT THE SAME CENSUS PAGE CONTAINS ORLOW BABCOCK WITH 2 DAUGHTERS, 10-15 YEARS OLD. SARAH BABCOCK (#14) WHO IN 1932 MARRIED JOHN KLINGLER (#15) WOULD HAVE BEEN 13 YEARS OLD ON THE CENSUS DATE, SO THIS CENSUS FITS OTHER DATA. (A SON ORLOW, #63, WAS BORN 8/10/1833 TO THE MARRIAGE OF JOHN AND SARAH AND IN ORLOW'S ARMY PAPERS HE STATES THAT HE WAS BORN 8 MILES EAST & NORTH OF INDIANAPOLIS. IT IS QUITE POSSIBLE THAT THE YOUNG MARRIED COUPLE WAS STILL LIVING AT HOME SO THIS MAY LOCATE THE LAND WHICH JOHN KLINGLER, JR. (#20) PURCHASED AS DISCUSSED ABOVE.) THE 1840 CENSUS OF BOONE COUNTY, INDIANA SHOWS JOHN CLINGLER, 50-69 WIFE 40-50 AND 1 FEMALE 20-30, 1 MALE 5-10, 3 MALES 10-15, 2 MALES 15-20, 3 MALES 20-30 S MALE 30-40. THESE NUMBERS INDICATE ONE OF THE MARRIED CHILDREN MIGHT BE LIVING WITH A SPOUSE WITH FAMILY. VERY GOOD RECONCILIATION WITH AGES OF THE CHILDREN RECORDED IN OUR RECORDS. THE OCCUPATION LIST SHOWS ONE FAMILY MEMBER EMPLOYED IN AGRICULTURE. JOHN KLINGLER, JR (#20) DIED 11/1/1848 SO HE DOES NOT SHOW ON THE 13 1850 CENSUS, HOWEVER HIS WIDOW RACHEL (RACHAEL) CLINGLER (KLINGLER) IS LISTED ON PAGE 328, BOONE COUNTY, DISTRICT 7 GATHERED 9/19/1850. CHILDREN, SAMUEL, 26; WILLIAM,22; JOSEPH (JOEL?),18; AND POLLY ARE LIVING WITH HER, WITH THE 3 BOYS LISTED AS FARMERS. VALUE OF REAL ESTATE IS LISTED AS $1200. SAMUEL, WILLIAM AND POLLY LISTED AS MARRIED. (WHERE ARE SPOUSE AND/OR CHILDREN?) RACHEL'S SON, FREDERICK, 33, WITH WIFE, MURINEY, 27 AND 3 CHILDREN ARE LISTED IN AN ADJACENT RESIDENCE VALUED AT $350 AND HE IS LISTED AS A FARMER. THE CHILDREN ARE SAMUEL H.,6; MALIZA,3; AND MARIAH,1. RACHEL'S SON, GEORGE,36, WITH HIS WIFE NANCY,22, WITH NO CHILDREN ARE LIVING IN AN ADJACENT RESIDENCE VALUED AT $300 AND HE IS LISTED AS A FARMER. RACHEL'S SON, FRANCIS L.,30, IS LIVING IN DISTRICT 7 BOONE COUNTY WITH WIFE MARY (POLLY?),24, BORN IN NORTH CAROLINA AND CHILDREN, RACHAEL,8; SARAH,7; KATHERINE,6; POLLY,4; AND JOHN,1. REAL ESTATE WAS VALUED AT $300 AND FRANCIS WAS LISTED AS A FARMER. (WIFE MARY LISTED AS NOT BEING ABLE TO READ OR WRITE.) RACHEL'S SON, RICHARD,20, IS LIVING IN DISTRICT 7, BOONE COUNTY WITH WIFE, ELIZA,20, AND A SON, WILLIAM,1. ELIZA WAS BORN IS OHIO. NO REAL ESTATE VALUE IS LISTED. RICHARD LISTED AS A FARMER. RACHEL/S SON, ELIJAH,23, AND WIFE, MARY,19, ARE LIVING IN DISTRICT 7 OF BOONE COUNTY WITH A SON, PLEASANT, 11 MONTHS OLD. MARY WAS BORN IN OHIO. NO REAL ESTATE VALUE GIVEN AND OCCUPATION LISTED AS FARMER. RACHEL'S SON, JOHN (#15),39, WAS LIVING WITH HIS WIFE, SARAH,34, BORN IN NEW YORK, IN NEARBY CLAY TOWNSHIP, HAMILTON COUNTY, WITH CHILDREN, ORLOW,17,BORN IN INDIANA; MARTHA,13,BORN IN INDIANA; RACHEL,7,BORN IN ILLINOIS; AND WILLIAM TAYLOR,1,BORN IN INDIANA. JOHN IS LISTED AS A COOPER AND SON ORLOW AS A FARMER. NO REAL ESTATE VALUE IS LISTED. I have a copy of a Family Group Record produced by Mrs Harold E. Weller, 306 Voorhees St. Rockville, IN. When but 5 years of age his parents moved to Kentucky which was at that time one dense forest and white settlements were few to be found. Two years later they moved to Marion Co., IN which was wilder than that from which they came. Moved in 1837 to Boone Co., IN where they spent the rest of their days. He and wife Nancy J. Wolf died within little more than a year of each other, no children except one which they adopted and reared as their own son. He lived with this boy, Thomas. (note from James B. He married SARAH BABCOCK August 12, 1832 in Marion County, IN9, daughter of ORLOW BABCOCK. She was born November 06, 1816 in Washington Co., NY, and died April 11, 1888 in Richland Center, WI. Notes for JOHN THOMAS KLINGLER: 22 JOHN THOMAS KLINGLER, SR, (#15) From History of Richland County,WI-1884. John Klingler, a native of KY born Nov.28,1810,came from Marion Co.,IN, and on the 23rd day of June 1852 settled on the SW Qtr of Sect.27 Richland and there engaged in farming until his death, which occurred May 6, 1874. He left a wife and five children: Orlow, Martha, now the wife of George W. Miller, Rachel, Frank and John. "EARLY TIMES IN BOONE COUNTY INDIANA 1887" in Madison IN Library has an article about his father and family which indicates he was born in Ohio, Novembeer 28, 1810. This was probably Clermont Co.,OH. 1850 Census from Hamilton Co., IN (Clay Township) says born in Ohio, occupation cooper; 1910 Census in Richland Center WI, listing Orlow Klingler indicates that his father was born in KY and his mother in Ohio. In 1884 wife and son Frank still resided at the homestead on land owned and occupied by John and Sarah from 1854. JOHN KLINGLER, JR.,(#15) WAS BORN IN CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO, 11/28/1810 AND MOVED WITH HIS FATHER JOHN KLINGLER, JR., (#20), MOTHER RACHEL (#274) AND BROTHERS AND SISTER TO BRACKEN COUNTY, KENTUCKY IN 1828 OR 1829 FOR A SHORT PERIOD AND THEN IN 1830 WITH THEM TO MARION COUNTY, INDIANA. ON 8/12/1832 HE MARRIED SARAH BABCOCK IN MARION COUNTY, INDIANA. THE FOLLOWING CHILDREN WERE BORN TO THIS MARRIAGE: ORLOW (#63) b.8/10/1833, INDIANA, d.5/1/1917, RICHLAND CENTER WISCONSIN; MARTHA (#65) b.ca.1837, INDIANA, d.5/10/1906, WISCONSIN; RACHAEL (#62) b.ca.1843, ILLINOIS, d. , WISCONSIN; WILLIAM TAYLOR (#79) b.ca.1849, INDIANA, d. , ; FRANCIS M. (#64) b.9/?/1853, RICHLAND CENTER, WISCONSIN, d. , : JOHN THOMAS KLINGLER (#6), b.6/18/1856, RICHLAND CENTER, WISCONSIN, d.5/12/1927, SAVANNA, ILLINOIS. THIS FAMILY WAS IN HAMILTON COUNTY, CLAY TOWNSHIP, INDIANA AT THE TIME OF THE 1850 CENSUS. JOHN THOMAS KLINGLER, SR(#15) WAS LISTED ON THAT CENSUS AS A COOPER AND THAT HE HAD BEEN BORN IN OHIO, HIS WIFE SARAH AS HAVING BEEN BORN IN NEW YORK, CHILDREN: ORLOW b.IN, MARTHA b.IN, RACHAEL b.IL AND WILLIAM TAYLOR b.IN. ORLOW WAS LISTED AS A FARMER. (RESEARCH, SO FAR, HAS FAILED TO LOCATE THIS FAMILY IN 1840, AND WHY RACHAEL WAS BORN IN ILLINOIS) THE FOLLOWING TEXT IS FROM "HISTORY OF RICHLAND COUNTY". THIS IS RICHLAND COUNTY WISCONSIN, THE HISTORY WAS PUBLISHED IN 1884 AND THE TEXT WAS ON PAGE 1185: "JOHN KLINGLER (#15), A NATIVE OF KENTUCKY, BORN NOV. 28, 1810, CAME FROM MARION CO., IND., AND ON THE 23D DAY OF JUNE, 1852, SETTLED ON THE SOUTHWEST QUARTER OF SECTION 27, RICHLAND, AND THERE ENGAGED IN FARMING UNTIL HIS DEATH, WHICH OCCURRED MAY 6, 1874. HE LEFT A WIFE AND FIVE CHILDREN--ORLOW, MARTHA, NOW WIFE OF GEORGE W. MILLER; RACHEL, FRANK AND JOHN. MRS. KLINGLER AND HER SON FRANK STILL RESIDE AT THE HOMESTEAD. ORLOW KLINGLER, OLDEST SON OF THE ABOVE, WAS BORN IN MARION CO., IND., AUG. 10, 1833. HE CAME WITH 23 HIS PARENTS TO WISCONSIN, AND ON THE 6TH OF SEPTEMBER, 1855, WAS MARRIED TO RACHEL J. MILLER. AUG. 13, 1862, HE ENLISTED IN COMPANY B, 25TH WISCONSIN, AND SERVED UNTIL THE REGIMENT WAS MUSTERED OUT OF SERVICE. SINCE THE WAR HE HAS BEEN ENGAGED IN GENERAL FARMING AND NOW OWNS 235 ACRES, WITH FIRST CLASS IMPROVEMENTS. MR. KLINGLER VOTES THE REPUBLICAN TICKET BUT TAKES LITTLE INTEREST IN POLITICAL AFFAIRS. THE ONLY CIVIC SOCIETY OF WHICH HE IS A MEMBER, IS THE GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC. MR. AND MRS. KLINGLER HAVE ONE DAUGHTER--SARAH J." THE LAND REFERRED TO IN THE ABOVE TEXT IS EASILY LOCATED ON AN 1874 MAP OF RICHLAND. JOHN T. KLINGLER, SR (#15) OWNED THE 80 ACRES AND SON ORLOW OWNED 120 ACRES ADJACENT. THE PINE RIVER FLOWED THROUGH THE NORTH EDGE OF BOTH PROPERTIES AND THE PINE RIVER CEMETERY IS ABOUT 1/2 MILE EAST OF THE PROPERTY, JUST ACROSS THE PINE RIVER. SHORTLY AFTER THE DEATH OF JOHN T. KLINGLER, SR (#15) A SERIES OF ARRANGEMENTS AND TRANSACTIONS WITH FAMILY MEMBERS AND OTHERS ENABLED ORLOW TO ASSUME OWNERSHIP OF JOHN'S (#15) 80 ACRES PLUS ADD SOME ADJOINING PROPERTY SO THAT THE FARM TOTALLED APPROXIMATELY 235 ACRES. THIS CLEARLY SHOWS ON A RICHLAND MAP OF 1895. AN ADDITIONAL TEXT FROM A BOOK LOCATED IN THE GENEALOGY SECTION OF THE RICHLAND CENTER LIBRARY ENTITLED "RICHLAND CENTER, WISCONSIN" BY TAYLOR PUBLISHING, ON PAGE 260, IS AS FOLLOWS: "BERNARD AND PHYLLIS (KEYS) KELLER #635" "ORLOW KLINGLER, ORIGINALLY FROM INDIANA, MARION COUNTY, PURCHASED FARM LAND IN RICHLAND COUNTY ON NOVEMBER 10, 1855. THE FAMILY STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE OF SALE SIGNED BY PRESIDENT FRANKLIN PIERCE. RACHEL MILLER, DAUGHTER OF CAMPBELL AND PRISCILLA MILLER, MARRIED ORLOW KLINGLER IN 1855. ORLOW SERVED IN THE CIVIL WAR IN CO. B 25TH VOLUNTEER FROM WISCONSIN. THE GREATGRANDCHILDREN NOW HAVE HIS DISCHARGE PAPERS, AND HIS GOLD HEADED CANE AND BUTTONS FROM HIS MILITARY JACKET. (AT THIS POINT IN THE TEXT THERE IS INSERTED AN EXCELLENT PORTRAIT OF ORLOW AND RACHEAL MILLER KLINGLER WITH GRANDCHILDREN GLEN KEYS, JAY KEYS AND ODA KEYS SCHMITT.) ORLOW AND RACHEL HAD ONE CHILD SARAH JANE KLINGLER, WHO MARRIED CHARLES B. KEYS, MARCH 1884. THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN: ODA C. KEYS SCHMITT, C. GLEN KEYS AND JAY HOLLIS KEYS. ODA MARRIED WILLIAM SCHMITT OF BLUE RIVER IN 1908. THEY HAD NO CHILDREN. JAY KEYS DIED IN 1918 WHEN STRUCK BY A TRAIN IN PENNSYLVANIA. GLEN KEYS MARRIED VELMA CARTER, DAUGHTER OF JOHN AND MYRTIE CARTER OF SEXTONVILLE, 24 IN FEBRUARY 1929. THEY FARMED THE FAMILY FARM "FRESIAN PARK FARM" (NOW OWNED BY RAYMOND AND SYLVIA SCHMITZ SOUTH OF RICHLAND CENTER) UNTIL GLEN'S HEALTH FAILED IN 1936. HE WAS PROUD OF HIS REGISTERED HOLSTEIN COWS AND SHOWED A GRAND CHAMPION AT THE CHICAGO WORLD FAIR IN 1933. GLEN AND VELMA HAD FOUR CHILDREN: NORMA JEAN KEYS ALF, AUGUST 7, 1930; PHYLLIS MARIE KEYS KELLER, APRIL 21, 1931; HELEN RUTH KEYS MOSER, JANUARY 20, 1933; AND WILLIAM GLEN BILL KEYS, DECEMBER 21, 1937. THE KEYS CHILDREN ATTENDED RICHLAND CENTER HIGH SCHOOL. JEAN ATTENDED STOUT AND EAU CLAIRE COLLEGES AND MARRIED JOHN ALF OF ELEVA. THEY NOW LIVE ON A FARM NEAR ELEVA AND HAVE THREE CHILDREN: STEVE, KAREN, AND LORRI. PHYLLIS ATTENDED STOUT COLLEGE AND WORKED FOR SCHULTZ BROS. AND DR. J.F. HENKEL BEFORE SHE MARRIED BERNARD L. KELLER, SON OF OTTO KELLER AND MABEL DRAY KELLER, IN FEBRUARY 1951` IN RICHLAND CENTER. BERNARD WAS IN THE SERVICE FROM 1951 UNTIL 1953, STATIONED IN FORT SILL AND OKLAHOMA CITY. AFTER BEING IN THE SERVICE, THEY MOVED BACK TO RICHLAND CENTER. BERNARD (BUN) KELLER WAS A CITY POSTAL LETTER CARRIER FOR SEVENTEEN YEARS UNTIL 1980 WITH FORCED RETIREMENT BECAUSE OF ARTHRITIS. PHYLLIS WORKED AT BURNHAM JEWELERS FROM 1953 UNTIL 1972 WHEN THEY PURCHASED THE STORE FROM THE FAMILY OF ROBERT BURNHAM. BUN AND PHYLLIS HAD THREE CHILDREN: ELLEN DAWN, RANDALL JAY (RANDY), AND RICHARD WILLIAM (RICK). ELLEN MARRIED RANDY BIRD IN 1976. THEY HAVE TWO CHILDREN: LAURA DAWN AND RYAN LEE. RANDY MARRIED JEANINE SMITH ON OCTOBER 27, 1984; AND RICK MARRIED JANET JOHNSON ON JULY 13, 1985. HELEN RUTH KEYS MARRIED ALLAN "BUD" MOSER AND SHE WILL TELL ABOUT HER FAMILY IN ANOTHER PART OF THIS BOOK. WILLIAM GLEN "BILL" KEYS MARRIED JUDY ALLISON OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON. THEY HAD TWINS, CULLY ANN AND BILL BORN IN DECEMBER 1963, AND A BOY, CHUCK, BORN IN JUNE 1965. I REMEMBER AUNT ODA SCHMITT TELLING OF AN INDIAN MAN AND WIFE WITH A LITTLE BABY TRAVELING THE PINE RIVER BY CANOE. THEY STOPPED AT THE FARMHOUSE TO GET MEDICINE FOR THE SQUAW. AFTER QUITE A TIME TRYING TO COMMUNICATE, THEY FINALLY GOT ACROSS THAT THEY WANTED "SORGHUM MOLASSES" TO CURE "THE MISERIES". SUBMITTED BY PHYLLIS KELLER." THE PRECEDING PAGES PERHAPS TELL MORE ABOUT SON ORLOW KLINGLER (#63) THAN ABOUT THE FATHER JOHN THOMAS KLINGLER, SR (#15) BUT DOES GIVE A GOOD HISTORY OF THE FAMILY. AS CAN BE SEEN BY THE RECORDS ORLOW WAS THE FIRSTBORN SON AND WAS 23 YEARS OLDER THAN HIS BROTHER JOHN THOMAS KLINGLER, JR (#6). MORE ABOUT (#6) ON ANOTHER PAGE. 25 (A PERSONAL NOTE HERE, I, JIM KLINGLER (#1) VISITED RICHLAND CENTER, WISCONSIN IN AUGUST 1990. A COUSIN, PHYLISS MARIE (KEYS) KELLER (# ), WHO IS THE AUTHOR OF A LENGTHY TEXT SHOWN ABOVE AND IS INCLUDED IN THE TEXT WAS STILL RESIDING IN RICHLAND CENTER AS WAS HER SISTER RUTH. AT THE TIME OF THE TEXT SHE OWNED A JEWELRY STORE BUT AT THE TIME OF MY VISIT SHE OWNED A VERY NICE DRESS SHOP, "CLASSIC FASHIONS", ON THE CORNER OF COURT AND CHURCH ST.. SHE WAS KIND ENOUGH TO VISIT WITH ME IN HER SHOP, WAS VERY EASY TO TALK WITH. SHE HAD LIVED ON THE KLINGLER FARM AS A LITTLE GIRL AT WHICH TIME THE FARM WAS SOLD LEAVING KLINGLER FAMILY OWNERSHIP. I VISITED THE FARM THEN OWNED BY RAY AND SYLVIA SCHMITZ WHERE I FOUND SYLVIA PAINTING A FENCE IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE. SHE WAS EXTREMELY KIND, WHEN LEARNING OF THE REASON FOR MY INTEREST, INVITED ME INTO HER FINE HOME, AND TALKED TO ME ABOUT THE FARM HISTORY. SHE SEEMED VERY AWARE AND PROUD OF THE HISTORY. SHE STATED THAT THE ORIGINAL HOUSE AND FENCE HAD BURNED IN 1928. A NUMBER OF THE KLINGLERS ARE BURIED IN THE PINE RIVER CEMETERY WHICH IS JUST ACROSS THE PINE RIVER FROM THE KLINGLER FARM.) Some of you have had this before but I think it is so touching and helps explain the things that made her what she became. She wrote all of this in longhand and I typed it as she wrote it. I gave her a copy in double space so she could correct any errors. She never did. There are a few factual errors but they do not detract from the story and the genealogy file can straighten that out. Love, DAD (GRANDPA)Jim January 27, 1998 by Grace Marie (Johnston) Klingler James and Freida Johnston moved to Davenport, Iowa from Buffalo, IA when I, Grace, was 2 yrs. Old, 1918. My grandfather, August Huetter built our house on 2720 Whitewood Ave, Davenport, IA (the first street north of Telegraph Rd. In 2700 block. In 1928 Mom had this so called friend that owned a hotel in Walcott, IA and he decided to sell it to Mom, Dad thought it would be good for our family to run and make a good living. He gave Mom a down payment with three promissory notes that weren't worth the paper they were written on. He had no money in his own name. It was all in his wife's name so Mom and Dad couldn't use the notes to pay on the hotel so we lost it and we moved back to; Davenport in 1929. We moved into a house we rented on 1713 East 13th St. I went to East Intermediate school. I had to walk about 12 blocks to school. A black girl in my grade used to stop at our house and call for me on her way to school. I'd forgotten her name but she was a real nice girl. She was a little heavy and she wouldn't eat hardly anything and she got sick and died before very long. She dieted too seriously. I had a chance to go to work for a family and get my board and room and $5 a wk. I could work during the summer vacation as I had to go to school till I was 16. I told this lady I was 15 but I was only 14 and I shouldn't have lied because she found out I had lied to her. (She had a sterling silver coffee pot that I plugged in one day to make the coffee and the spout fell off and base and handle all fell apart. I was scared to death, I'd forgotten to put water in the pot before plugged it in. Mr Alexander was home and he came into the kitchen and told me to put it all in a paper bag and he put it in the garbage can. He didn't want his mother to see it as she'd bought it for them a few years before. He was real nice to me and I told him I'd pay for it so much a wk. Till pd. For and he said no, he'd buy a new one and she would never know. They were the nicest couple. They had one son. In a later year their son was the 1st Davenport son killed in that war. I washed, ironed and cleaned for them.) My father left one day to go out with his brother from Rock Island, his brother, Joe, was single and he didn't have any children. Dad was gone several days and he came home sick besides having to much to drink. Mother put him to bed and called the Dr. and he had pneumonia. Dr. said liquor and Pneumonia don't mix. Dad died after about a wk. In bed. He was only 39 yrs. old. It was 1930 and I was 14 yrs. old. My mother got a card that she could use to go downtown twice a month and get foods, commodities that the government passed out to poor families. I used to go down with my 43 brother Charles to help carry the food. We had to stand in line for a long time, sometimes. I hated it. We'd get different things at different times, flour, rice, salt pork, lard, margarine (butter sometimes). Mom baked every other day, bread for us and we ate a lot of bread, I tell you. Once in awhile Mom baked bread, rolls, and coffee cakes and we would go out and try to sell them door to door. (I hated it!!) I used to bake bread for our family on days mom didn't bake to sell. When we lived on Whitewood Ave. Before I was 12 years old I helped a neighbor lady clean her house especially scrub floors and she worked in a cookie factory and she'd bring a box of cookies home for me to take home once in awhile. She knew I used to listen to the Cubs ball team (in Chicago) play on the radio, one day she and her husband, Chauncey Smith, took me on the train to Chicago to watch the Cubs play. I was thrilled to death. My mom had to go to work to; feed all the children. There were 7 children younger than myself and my sister, Ev. She was 3 years older than I was. I had to quit school, at 15, to help Mom with the children as she worked nights cleaning offices at a big office building downtown. My one brother, Frankie, who was about 3 yrs. Old got sick and died within 6 months after my father died and also my youngest sister, Helen, who was a baby less than a year old died within a year after my Dad died. I went to part time school until I was 16. We couldn't pay the rent on the house so we moved down into the west end on 6th street across the street from the Buchanan school. Rent was less there. I forgot to tell you we had a lady stay with us who had polio in her younger years. She couldn't use her one arm. She was a friend of my Moms and she helped her a lot with the children. She didn't move with us as we didn't have enough room for her so Mom really missed her. Mom had a hard time making enough money to pay rent and also feed the 7 children so she got a job cleaning offices downtown from 5PM to 1AM. It was hard on her as she didn't get enough sleep. Mother got sick and Dr. said she had a Tumor and needed an operation. She was sent to Iowa City as we couldn't pay a Dr. That was a very good hospital, it's still well known for the good care they have there. Mom survived the operation and friends of my Mom picked her up and brought her home. She never was very healthy after that, she had heart trouble and was on nitroglycerine. She died at 40 yrs., 1935, 5 yrs. after Dad died. Evelyn, my older sister, worked at an Insurance Company in Rock Island and she wanted to move into a nicer, larger home but after a few months rent she realized she couldn't pay the rent so we had to move to an apartment upstairs above a drugstore. We had to put our wash machine on the back porch and carry water from the kitchen to wash clothes. I was lucky enough to get a job in the Insurance Office my sister Evelyn worked in when I turned 17 so I could begin helping my sis with the bills. My mother got sicker and needed another operation and she called the priest at St. Alphonsos to come see her. She asked if there was any chance of the St Vincents Home to take the 3 youngest children, Dorothy, Dick and Ted as with Evelyn and I both working there was no one to take care of them and he came back and told us they would keep them but Evelyn and I had to pay so much a wk. For their board and room. We sure missed them. 44 Mother died that following May, 1935, so there were Ev, Chuck, Don, Lyle, Dorothy, Dick, Ted and myself left. My brother Chuck had a friend with a car and he would take us to the home to see Ted, Cick and Dorothy and once in a while we'd take them out for ice cream and they loved it. After Mom died Evelyn and I still had to pay for the 3 in the home and the bill kept getting bigger and bigger. We paid the Home for years after we both were married. As soon as I married, I took Ted and Dick out of the home and sister Evelyn took Dorothy to live with her. I married the following yr., 1936 and Chet was good to the boys. The yr. After Mom died my brother Dugan fell off of his bike delivering papers and hurt his knee and it got infected and the Fr. Said he had T.B. They put him in a TB (tuberculosis) Hospital and the knee kept getting worse and worse. It finally opened up thru a bed sore on his leg. Drs. Checked the pus that drained from the leg and said he didn't have TB at all, just a bad infection. Drs. Then operated on the leg and Lyle was left with 1 stiff leg and he was such a great kid he didn't complain much at all. Lyle was a super brother to all the family. Our youngest brother Ted worked for a pipe covering Co. And he saved his money and bought his own business, Insulation Co. And he hired Chuck an Do;;n to work for him. He lived with me and saved and bought his own home. He is a wonderful brother to all of us and he always was ready to help any of us out. He was a good friend of Jens Nielsen and his wife Marilyn and they treated him like he was one of their family, when Jens Nielsen died of a heart attack Ted was very good to Marilyn and their children. He ended up marrying Marilyn and I was glad as they were happy together. Ted was good to Marilyn's children and she's been a good wife to Ted and they've had many happy years together. In the last yrs. during Ted's sickness Marilyn and Mike, her son, have been a life saver for him. They, Marilyn and Mike have both done a super job of taking care of Ted for the past 2 yrs.. Ted didn't want to go to a hospital and Mike has given up his life to take care of him.
