Annual Report - Institute for Educational Advancement

Annual Report
Connecting bright minds; nurturing intellectual and personal growth
From the President
Over the past 16 years, I have had the pleasure of nurturing and supporting the growth of IEA from a “mom
and pop” organization (thank you, Jim Davis) to a nationally recognized institute committed to providing
exemplary services that incorporate the needs of the mind, body and spirit of the gifted child.
“Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
2015 Highlights
•
IEA recorded and released two new videos
documenting programs and services designed
to meet the needs of gifted youth today.
•
In November, IEA held a two-day Public Policy
symposium with experts in business, gifted
research, and gifted education to discuss the
needs of gifted youth and how these issues
might be addressed on a national scale.
•
IEA Academy hosted several new offerings,
including a series of successful Mini-Lectures
and Workshops.
•
This year, CDB Scholars and Alumni received a
number of prestigious awards and scholarships
including the Fullbright Foundation Grant and
the Gates Cambridge Scholarship.
IEA remains devoted to advocating for and serving gifted young people from all backgrounds. The staff and
team of volunteers at IEA are resilient, determined, and share a sense of purpose that facilitates a flow of
new ideas and different approaches to meet the unique needs of each highly able child in our community. GROWTH
Our strategic plan focuses a great deal on purposeful growth. Reinventing the Apprenticeship Program
to adapt to the needs of teens today will allow more students to participate in this impactful mentoring
experience. Expanding the CDB Scholarship initiative will ensure over 25 new scholars will be identified each
year – increasing the number of scholars in high school to approximately 105 a year. We have identified a
new Yunasa Fellow, whose commitment to our cause will be integral to the growth of Yunasa. Academy has
touched the lives of local gifted young people by providing engaging classes and a sense of community that
bolsters confidence and joy in the children we serve.
COMMITMENT
Our leadership has been consistent and mission-driven. The IEA board, Fellows,
and staff have demonstrated their personal passion for the mission and vision of
the organization through hours of tireless work and nearly 100% participation in our
annual fund. INSPIRATION
Every child that enters our community brings a new challenge, a new element of
responsibility, and a new light to our team. We are grateful for each opportunity to
enter the precious world of a new child. One camper recently said to me, “Betsy,
don’t ever worry, you got this right – IEA is a miracle for the gifted child and it is nirvana for me.”
I hope you find this report informative as well as engaging. We are proud of our accomplishments and aware
that there is still much to be done. Thank you for your support and belief in these wonderful beings. These
kids need us and we need them (plus they are a blast)!
Mission Statement
The Institute for Educational Advancement (IEA) is dedicated to the intellectual, creative, and personal growth in our
nation’s gifted and high potential youth. Central to the mission of IEA is a commitment to the development of the whole
child through engaging learning experiences that promote optimal challenge, mentorship, exploration of ideas, and
recognition of personal potential. IEA seeks to connect like-minded individuals and supports a diverse community that
creates a sense of belonging and affirmation.

Yunasa campers Sultan Shah and
Saad Khan, along with their little
sisters, advocated for Yunasa by
organizing two fundraisers last year.
In August, they performed a concert at
a local gas station in their home town
of Memphis, TN. The campers and their sisters created a Yunasa
banner and decor, brought their guitars and sound equipment, and
entertained a small audience. They donated their earnings to Yunasa.
Sultan and Saad continued their fundraising efforts by petitioning
several buisinesses for donations. Many thanks to Sultan, Saad, and
their wonderful sisters for their help in making Yunasa a reality.

“I always look forward to going to my Academy classes. It is fun
that we can discuss exciting subjects and let our discussions
go really deep. I feel like I can ask as many questions as I want!
When class is over, I keep on thinking about what I learned,
which inspires me to research more about it, because it is so
interesting. I have been thinking about my own experiment
related to the Delayed Choice Quantum Eraser Experiment,
that involves people observing the quantum state of the
entangled particle. If my experiment is successful, it should
predict the future!”

“I believe I am proof that this program is more than just a
financial award. I have received opportunities I could not
have even imagined as an enthusiastic yet slightly nervous
7th grader about to begin her finalist interview. In every
endeavor, I am supported by a far-reaching network of likeminded CDB Scholars. When I toured colleges, CDB Alumni
were there to welcome me, guide me, take me to classes,
and answer my many questions, from specifics about
Middle Eastern Studies programs to “How’s the food?” When
it came time to apply for scholarships, CDB Alums wrote
letters and spoke to program coordinators on my behalf. Being a member of this group – and we’re not just limited
to this room; we extend throughout the country and the
world, in every discipline and career – being a member of
this dynamic, kind, and brilliant community is a reward so
much greater than any monetary amount could ever be. I’m so honored to count myself among the CDB family, and
as I move out of high school into college, I welcome the
opportunity to assist future Scholars as Alumni have done
for me.”
