Parents count: including early
mathematics in early
intervention programs

How about your math skills?
FCEI 2016
Parents count: the project
• Investigating the early mathematics skills of DHH
toddlers
• Online parent intervention in the home environment
FCEI 2016
Why focus on early mathematics skills?
• Math skills important for development and participation
• Early math skills predict later math skills and school
success (Clements & Sarama, 2009; Duncan et al., 2007).
• Even stronger predictor than early literacy (Duncan et al.,
2007).
• DHH children are at risk, already at an early age (Kritzer,
2009; Pagliaro & Kritzer, 2013)
FCEI 2016
Role for parents
• Attention for math in the home environment important for
math skills (Segers et al., 2015).
• Stimulation is effective (Kleemans, ; Pagliaro & Kritzer, 2016)
FCEI 2016
What is early math about?
• Counting
• Math language:
first, second, long, short, slow, fast,
high, low, small, big, morning, evening,
tomorrow, empty, full, square, circle,
triangle…..
• Math activities:
puzzles, blocks, books, baking cookies, sorting…..

Goals intervention*
Helping parents of young D/HH children to improve their
children’s readiness in mathematics
• Use natural daily activities and experiences
• Improve parents’ knowledge of math development
and language/communication (in terms of their child)
• Increase parents’ awareness of their role in mediating
their children’s learning

Online Intervention
Website for parents
• General information about math
• Information about the three math domains
• Examples (video’s) of activities within the 4 contexts
At home
• Parents make video’s of activities (each domain)
• Parents send video’s to professionals
• Professionals give (positive) feedback

*Measurement incorporates a lot of
different contexts. For example, a person
can think about measuring size (big, little,
tall, long, small, extra large, inches, yards,
etc.), weight (heavy, light, ounces, pounds,
etc.), time (yesterday, today, Monday,
February, Christmas, winter, etc.), or
money (penny, cent, dollar, etc.).
* Based on Pagliaro & Kritzer
Measurement

There are a lot of games you can
play with your child that
incorporate measurement.
•Play “Grocery store”. How much
will this bottle of milk cost? How
much will the banana weigh?
In this video the boy is
building a tower with his
father. They talk about a
high tower, a higher one and
the highest one. They
“measure” if the tower is
higher than the boy.
Build a high and a small tower
with blocks.
Talk about size. Does an
elephant fit in our bath tube?
