1b. Vocabulary Unit 1-Part 2 Pulling Apart Words

Vocabulary Unit 1-‐Part 2: Pulling Apart Words How do root words help define a word’s meaning? YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT A WORD MEANS SUCH AS USE: 1. Useless-‐ “Well, less means without, so useless must mean without use. If something is useless you usually don’t use it.” YOU LEARNED WHAT THE 2 ROOT WORDS MEAN SO YOU CAN PUT THEM TOGETHER: 2. Microphone-‐ “Well, phone means sound, so I know it’s something with sound. I know that micro means small, so if I put the two root words together, it would mean some sort of a small sound.” YOU LEARNED WHAT 1 ROOT MEANS AND RESEARCHED TO SEE IF THE WORD HAS ANOTHER ONE. TURNS OUT THAT IT DID! 3. Bicycle-‐ “Well, bi means two, and when I looked up cycl, it means round or recurring. So bicycle must mean something with 2 round things or 2 things that recur. I know from my own knowledge what a bicycle is so it makes sense that it has 2 wheels that are round and they keep on going and going.” YOU LEARNED WHAT 1 ROOT MEANS AND RESEARCHED TO SEE IF THE WORD HAS ANOTHER ONE. TURNS OUT THAT IT DID NOT SO NOW YOU WOULD HAVE TO USE YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND ALSO LOOK AT IT IN CONTEXT! 4. Miniature-‐ “Well I know that min means small and when I looked it up, iature and ature did not have a definition so it’s most likely not a root word. I then looked up miniature in a sentence and found this: Since the sentence is talking about kids clothes versus adult clothes it must mean a smaller version. Since min means small, it makes sense, so I think that miniature means smaller version.
