Jake Coon, Assistant Coach
Following one of the more distinguished playing careers in the storied history of Nazareth College lacrosse, Jake Coon is
back for his fourth season as an assistant coach.
Rob Randall is getting used to assuming challenges. Aside from the
obvious obstacle he faced when he was hired in 2000 as just the second
lacrosse coach in the program's highly successful history, he also was
taken to task in 2003 as he led Nazareth to the Empire 8 Conference title
and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament after a one-year hiatus.
While it wasn't exactly tantamount to replacing Vince Lombardi with the Green Bay Packers or
John Wooden at UCLA, succeeding the somewhat legendary Scott Nelson, who built the Nazareth
lacrosse program from ground zero to three national titles in 15 seasons, was a somewhat
daunting endeavor.
Z
Coon was the team's starting goalie for four seasons and in 2000 became the program's first-ever four-time All-American.
He was a first-team selection in 1998 and 2000, each time being awarded with the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award as
the Outstanding Goalie in Division III.
As a freshman in 1997, Coon was the starting goalie on a Nazareth team that captured the NCAA Division III championship.
A native of Homer, N.Y., Coon was a three-sport standout at Homer High School. At Nazareth, he set records for most
career saves (769) and lowest single season goals-against average (7.32 in 2000). He also holds the NCAA Division III
Tournament record (as well as the Nazareth school record) for most saves in a game with 32. Coon has a degree in social science and still plays
professionally for the Rochester Rattlers.
"It was a huge challenge then and it continues to be," said Randall, who accepted the opportunity
after Nelson took the head coaching job at Division I Brown University. "It's a great situation to
be able to coach where I went to school. There's no place I'd rather be."
Chris Corcoran, Assistant Coach
After a somewhat disappointing season -- by Nazareth lacrosse standards -- in 2002 when the Golden Flyers finished 9-5 and missed the NCAA
playoffs for the first time in 12 years, Randall steered the program back in the right direction in 2003 as the Golden Flyers finished 12-4 overall and
captured the Empire 8 Conference championship with a thrilling 12-11 double overtime victory over Ithaca. For his efforts, Randall was recognized
as Empire 8 Coach of the Year, an honor he also secured in 2001.
Returning to the Nazareth lacrosse program for his fourth season as an assistant coach, Chris Corcoran completed his playing
career in stellar fashion in 2000. A regular as a long-stick midfielder, Corcoran earned honorable mention All-America honors and was chosen to compete in the prestigious North-South Senior all-star game.
Randall seemed like a natural coaching replacement for Nelson, having played at Nazareth in 1987 and serving on the staff as an assistant coach
for three seasons in the 1990s. He was on board in 1992 when the Golden Flyers captured their first national championship.
A native of Baldwinsville and a graduate of Bishop Ludden High School in Syracuse, Corcoran was a standout in basketball
and lacrosse there.
With Randall at the helm for his first season in 2001, the Golden Flyers picked up where they left off under Nelson, winning their first 15 games
and securing their 12th straight NCAA tournament berth. After bowing to Middlebury in the national semifinals, Randall was recognized as national
coach of the year by 360Lacrosse.com.
At Nazareth, Corcoran played three seasons of basketball, helping the Golden Flyers capture the ECAC Upstate title in 1997.
He also was a member of the 1996 national championship lacrosse team. He has a degree in business administration.
A native of Rochester, Randall spent the 2000 season as head coach at SUNY Geneseo. His coaching experience also includes a four-year stint as
head coach at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn. and three seasons as a Division I assistant coach at the U.S. Military Academy at West
Point. At Sacred Heart, Randall, like Nelson, started from scratch, building a program that would eventually be ranked fourth nationally in Division II.
He compiled a record of 41-20 in his four seasons there and twice was a finalist for Division II Coach of the Year honors. His 1996 team won the
ECAC Division II title.
As a player, Randall was a starting attackman and was named
the Golden Flyers' offensive most valuable player in 1987,
Nazareth's second season of intercollegiate competition.
He had 48 points on 18 goals and a team-best 30 assists.
Randall was a scholastic standout at Irondequoit High School and
went on to earn junior college All-America honors at Herkimer
County Community College before enrolling at Nazareth.
He earned a degree in sociology from Nazareth in 1988 and
a Master of Arts degree in teaching from Sacred Heart.
In addition to coaching lacrosse at Nazareth, Randall
oversees game management operations during the fall and
winter sports seasons. During the summer he operates the
popular Nazareth College Lacrosse Camp. This year’s camp
is July 5-9, 2004.
Randall steered the Lacrosse program in the right direction in
2003 as the Golden Flyers finished 12-4 overall and captured
the Empire 8 Conference championship.
Randall resides in Rochester with his wife, Barbara;
daughter, Carly; and son, Brett.

Sophomore Bryan Adams looks to build upon a
strong first season in which he scored 15 goals.
Senior T.J. Rogers transfered in from Hobart and
became an instant scoring threat with 13 goals
and six assists.
Others with experience include seniors Brian
Navarra and Mike Robbins, juniors Sean Lander
and Ryan Feltner, and sophomores Kyle Purcell,
Mike McGrath, Gerry Gordon, and Brian Gaffney.

Hubert, Conor O'Keefe, and Andrew Russo.
OK, so the secret is finally out and the
self-induced pressure that normally engulfs the
Nazareth men's lacrosse team has returned.
The Golden Flyers had a rare luxury in 2003
of fielding a team without the lofty expectations
of a conference champion and perennial
playoff contender.
It was somewhat surprising, therefore, when the
Golden Flyers claimed the Empire 8 Conference
championship and earned an NCAA Tournament
berth for the 14th time in 18 seasons.
"Just because some people considered us to be
in a rebuilding situation, our team goals didn't
change," said head coach Rob Randall, who
begins his fourth season with a record of 36-10.
"Our goal was to compete for the conference
championship and make it back to the NCAAs."
With that mission accomplished, attention turns
to 2004 and, perhaps, loftier expectations.
"We would like to compete just like we did last
year," Randall said. "Our conference schedule is
too difficult for us to look beyond that."
While they entered the 2003 season with much
to prove, there is a bit more stability in place for
2004, although there are still a number of
question marks, Randall cautions.
"We can't take anything for granted," he said.
The points won't automatically appear on the
scoreboard, but scoring goals should be
something the Golden Flyers achieve regularly.
The starting attack of sophomore Chris Balash,
junior Bryan Coon, and senior Brandon Brown is
back in place and will be bolstered by the return
of senior Justin Wahl, who gained an extra season
of eligibility after suffering a ruptured spleen in
the team's fifth game of '03. He was leading the
team in scoring at the time with 20 points,
including 13 goals.
Meanwhile, the Balash-Coon-Brown trio combined
to score 98 goals with Coon carrying away
first-team all-conference and honorable
mention All-America honors.
Sophomore Greg Kanellis played well in limited
action in 2003 and could be ready for a more
prominent role in '04. Junior Matt Ort also returns
after undergoing reconstructive knee surgery.
First-year players include Kevin Gibbons, Ryan
Hotaling, Jim Schultheis, and Jordan Hirsch.
The Golden Flyers took some graduation hits at
midfield with the departure of All-American Jim
Quackenbush as well as Jason Mordaci, David
Graham, Denny Patrick, and Erik Sullivan.
5
Randall recognizes a significant hole at long-stick
middie with the departure of conference Player of
the Year Matt Kent. He is pleased, however, with
the progress of sophomores T.J. Brescia and Jeff
Mangini, who are among the candidates to gain
playing time there along with freshman Francis
Donald.
On defense, junior Chris Cimini, a first-team E8
all-star, is back along with juniors Mike Field and
John Serron and senior Cory Kizielewicz. The area
also will be bolstered by the health of junior
Gordon Quonce, who underwent reconstructive
knee surgery last year after suffering a torn ACL.
Newcomers competing for playing time will be
freshmen Ryan Conley, Brian Kliszczewicz, Ryan
Perkins, Nick Spirito, and Will Tuttle.
The Golden Flyers entered the pre-season without
a clear-cut candidate to start in goal, although
junior Don Green has the most experience and
earned second-team all-conference honors in '03.
He will be pushed for playing time by a trio of
sophomores in Alex Civalier, George Polino and
transfer Patrick Mullin, who started last season
for Monroe Community College.
"We have a lot more experience now than we did
when we started last year," said Randall, who will
be assisted by Jake Coon, Chris Corcoran, and
Tim Booth. "It will be interesting to see how the
pieces fall into place."

It had all the ingredients of one of those rebuilding
seasons from hell.
Six of the top seven scorers, and five AllAmericans, were gone. Freshmen outnumbered
seniors 13-7. The inexperience was just too
obvious to overlook.
Then the overall pictured turned from cloudy to
downright ominous early in the season when two
of the team's captains, attackman Justin Wahl
and defenseman Gordon Quonce, went down
with season-ending injuries. But, a funny thing
happened to the Golden Flyers men's lacrosse
team in 2003 on their way to mediocrity -- they
never quite made it.
Midfielder Jim Quackenbush was an honorable mention All-American
Wahl was leading the Golden Flyers in scoring
(13 goals, seven assists) when he suffered a
ruptured spleen in the fifth game and was lost
for the season. That came just one game after
Quonce suffered a torn knee ligament that
required reconstructive surgery.
To the rescue offensively came a trio of
inexperienced attackmen -- freshman Chris
Balash, sophomore Bryan Coon, and junior
Brandon Brown -- who combined to score
98 goals.
Coon delivered an early-season message by
scoring five goals in an opening game win over
Washington College, then scored seven times in
an Empire 8 Conference win at Alfred. He wound
up with a team-high 45 goals and was an honorable
mention All-American selection.
Balash was glued to the bench for the first two
games before making the most of his opportunity
to play. He wound up with 26 goals and was tied
for the team lead with 17 assists. Brown also
played sparingly early in the season, then came
on strong late in the season to finish with 27
goals and 11 assists.
The midfield was bolstered by the strong efforts
of seniors Jim Quackenbush and Jason Mordaci.
Quackenbush earned honorable mention AllAmerican honors after contributing 28 points and
winning 56 percent of his face-offs. Mordaci was
the team's top-scoring middie with 34 goals.
Matt Kent earned Empire 8
Player of the Year honors.

The end result was impressive to say the least.
The Golden Flyers reloaded well enough to finish
12-4 overall. They regained supremecy in the
Empire 8 Conference and they returned to their
customary spot in the NCAA Division III tournament.

After missing the NCAA Tournament in 2002 for
the first time in 12 years, anxiety ran rampant
through the Nazareth coaching staff, although
head coach Rob Randall admitted that he "was
anxious to see how some of these guys develop."

honors. He spearheaded a defense that yielded
fewer than 10 goals per game and included
sophomore Chris Cimini and Mike Field, freshman
T.J. Brescia, and junior Cory Kizielewicz.
Cimini was a first-team all-conference choice,
while Field earned second-team honors along
with sophomore goalie Don Green.
Nazareth started the 2003 season looking much
like a toddler experiencing a pool of water for the
first time. The Golden Flyers were 3-3 through six
games with overtime losses to Rensselaer and
Adelphi and a two-goal loss to Cortland.
The Golden Flyers then embarked on a ninegame winning streak that carried them through
to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The
most exciting game of the bunch was a 13-12
double overtime victory over Ithaca that helped
the Golden Flyers win the E8 title and claim the
automatic bid to the NCAAs.
Trailing 10-5 late in the third quarter, Nazareth
rallied to outscore the Bombers 6-2 in the fourth
quarter to force overtime. Brown scored an
extra-man goal off a pass from Balash with :18
left to tie the score at 12-12. Then with 1:40 left
in the second four-minute overtime, midfielder
David Graham scored the game-winner off a
pass from Brian Navarra.
In the NCAAs, Nazareth scored a 15-4
opening-round win over Ohio Wesleyan, then
traveled to Middlebury and lost 21-12 in the
tournament quarterfinals.

Nazareth’s Athletic Mission and Philosophy
Academic Highlights
The Nazareth College Athletic Department will strive to empower its
student-athletes to grow as people and make a positive impact on
society, with life-skills development, mentoring, and leadership
opportunities through competitive and cooperative experiences.
• During the past 16 years, 24 Nazareth students have won Fulbright
grants to carry out research, teach, and study in countries around the
world. Few colleges and universities in the nation can match
Nazareth's record of preparing students for success in the Fulbright
competition – the U.S. government's most prestigious scholarship
program.
The Athletic Department is committed to assisting in the college’s
mission of educating students with a goal of fostering lifelong
commitment to intellectual, ethical and aesthetic values. The Athletic
Department will operate under firm institutional control of the college
and will always place the health and welfare of the student-athletes,
coaches and staff first in decisions regarding the athletics program.
• Nazareth has a distinguished history of teacher preparation with nearly
1,700 graduates currently teaching in Monroe County classrooms.
• Nazareth features an array of health professions programs,
including a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Music Therapy, Art
Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, and Physical Therapy.
The department will operate under the NCAA Division III philosophy,
through which academics are the student’s first priority and
sportsmanship, fair play, diversity and ethical conduct are constantly
taught and promoted.
• The Nazareth College Arts Center, which houses the departments
of Theatre Arts, Music, and Art, has welcomed more than two million
people to performances since it opened in 1967.
Campus Expansion
Community Service
In 2000, Nazareth contracted to purchase 73 acres of property
and buildings adjacent to the current campus from the college's
founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph. This opportunity doubles the size
of the campus and will enable the college to shape its future in ways
previously unimaginable.
Ninety-one percent of Nazareth undergraduates participate in
community service projects while they are students. In addition,
Nazareth offers an on-campus Center for Service Learning, which
serves as a resource for students seeking volunteer placements and
for faculty who want to incorporate service into the curriculum.
A three-phase master plan that will be implemented over the next
five to seven years, will integrate the existing campus with the newly
acquired property into one seamless and architecurally consistent
landscape. New academic programs, including a Master of Arts in
Liberal Studies, a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program,
and Information Technology have been joined by new athletic programs
in cross country, equestrian, softball, and track and field.
Alumni
Seventy-five percent of Nazareth's 23,000 alumni reside in New York
state. Nearly 70 percent are employed in service professions including
education, health care, child care, social work, and counseling.
Athletic Highlights
Undergraduate enrollment is projected to reach 2,000 students
within the next five years.
• The average grade-point average of student-athletes for the
spring 2003 semester was 3.06.
Faculty
Full-time
Part-time
Student/Faculty Ratio
• A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Nazareth
has 21 intercollegiate teams that compete at the Division III level.
Nazareth also competes in the Empire 8 Conference with Alfred,
Elmira, Hartwick, Ithaca, RIT, St. John Fisher, and Utica.
140
69
12:1
• Nazareth's men's lacrosse team won national championships
in 1992, 1996, and 1997.
Ninety-four percent of full-time faculty have received the highest
professional degree in their field.
• Nazareth finished 66th in the 2002-03 NACDA (National Association
of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) standings for Division III for its
second highest finish ever. The Golden Flyers were represented in
NCAA Tournaments in women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s
swimming, and men’s lacrosse.
Enrollment
Full-time undergraduate enrollment for the fall of 2003 will be
approximately 1,720. That number increases to about 3,100 with
the inclusion of part-time and graduate students. There are more
than 1,100 students living on campus.
Admission
The 2002-03 freshman class had a mean SAT score of 1131.
Over 31 percent finished in the top 10 percent of their high school
graduating class; 70 percent ranked in the top 25 percent.
Contact the Nazareth Admissions Office at (585) 389-2860 or toll-free
at (800) 462-3944 to find out more about the admission process,
including financial aid opportunities, to attend an open house,
or to arrange for a campus tour.
