I just started working for the State three weeks ago. On my very first week, I went to the Capital Rideshare office and the two ladies, Mary and Annette, were very kind to explain the Capital Rideshare Program and all the rideshare options available to me. I immediately started carpooling with my coworker, which relieves the burden of having to drive from Gilbert to downtown Phoenix every single day. This morning, we just took the Express Bus for the very first time, from Chandler! The bus system was so easy the Park & Ride location was so convenient and parking was plentiful. The bus ride to the State Capitol went by so fast, I really enjoyed the experience and am looking forward to riding the bus 23 times a week. I am amazed at how convenient getting to work has become and I am quickly becoming a very happy Arizona State employee. Thank you Capitol Rideshare Program! Kim Kwong, Department of Administration Try transit! Bus Service Expansion in October Not sure where to even start to find a transit route? Call the Valley Metro experts at 602.253.5000. Editor: Annette Fettig Rideshare Review Air Pollutant Information Ozone (O3) - Ozone, a colorless, odorless gas, is produced by chemical reactions between oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the presence of sunlight. NOx and VOCs are directly emitted into the air by motor vehicles, power plants, and other sources of combustion. Weather conditions that favor ozone accumulation near the ground include sunny skies and calm or light winds. Elevated ozone concentrations are typically observed for the Phoenix metropolitan area between March and October when day lengths are longest. Short-term impacts on people include: shortness of breath, chest pain, throat irritation, and reduced lung capacity. People with preexisting lung diseases, children, and the elderly are at the highest risk for ozone health impacts. Coarse particulates (PM10) - Coarse particulate matter, such as dust, are 10 microns or less in diameter, which is smaller than the width of a human hair. Since Phoenix is an arid environment, soils tend to dry out frequently and are prone to becoming airborne. Strong winds can loft these dust particles and result in haze or blowing dust in the Valley. On the other hand, PM10 levels can also increase under stagnation. PM10 is a concern during anytime of the year depending on the weather pattern. Long-term exposure to elevated PM10 concentrations can adversely affect respiratory functions. Besides potential health effects, excessive PM 10 from dust storms can obscure visibility and result in dangerous conditions for drivers on the road. Fine particulates (PM2.5) - Some sources for PM2.5 include fuel combustion in motor vehicles, wood smoke, power plants, and other industrial processes. The most prominent time of year for elevated fine particulate levels in the Valley is during the winter when cold air traps the particulates near the surface. During the summer, wildfire smoke may also impact the Phoenix area. When fine particulates such as soot, smoke, organic chemicals, or dust become concentrated in the air, health risks can develop. Small particles reach deep into the lungs affecting the respiratory system and are absorbed into the bloodstream causing cardiovascular complications. Those most at risk include people with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children.
