Free Children’s Dental Clinic The Poweshiek County Dental Coalition has partnered for a third year with local dentists to offer a FREE children’s dental clinic on Friday, February 6th from 8am to noon. The clinic is for children ages 3-18 who have Medicaid/Title 19 or no insurance due to lower income and will offer screenings and limited services as needed. A parent/guardian needs to make an appointment prior to January 31st by either calling Dental Associates in Grinnell at 641-236-6174, Family Dentistry in Grinnell at 641-236-6169, Family Dentistry in Montezuma at 641-623-2013, or Family Dentistry in Victor at 319-647-2141. Appointments will be scheduled on a first come first served basis. A parent/guardian is encouraged to attend the clinic with the child, although if cannot a consent form must be completed at the office prior to the clinic day. Transportation will be available upon request when making the appointment or during the clinic day. A FREE breakfast after the dental appointment is also provided for those who attend! The Give Kids a Smile Day event is part of February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month. Three BGM Students Attend the Dorian Music Festival Justin Slaymaker, Andrea McFarland & Randi Kephart Every second weekend in January the Dorian Vocal Festival is held at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. This choir consists of over 1200 students from schools in Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, South Dakota, Missouri, and Nebraska. BGM sends anywhere from two to five students to this event every year where the students sing for two days and end with a festival concert on the last day. This year Justin Slaymaker, Alli Kephart, and Andrea McFarland attended the festival. All three students sang four songs and learned a lot about more technical aspects of singing, as well as the community of singing. They all claimed that the last song was their favorite, "Let Everything That Hath Breath", which was a gospel song directed by a guest conductor this year. Kiwanis Sixth Grade Student of the Month… Rose Britts Rose Britts was named Sixth Grade Kiwanis Student of the Month for February. Rose is the daughter of Lisa Bender and Jeff Britts. Students are selected for this honor by the elementary staff. Geert Boelen Chosen as Kiwanis Outstanding Senior for February Geert Boelen is the son of Dorine & Jan Bolen. He has three brothers, Joris, Teun & Hessel. He also has a sister Dieuwertje. Geert’s family owns and operates Bear Creek Dairy. Geert said he has worked on the farm his whole life. He also worked for two years as Casa Margarita. When not working he enjoys sleeping, watching movies, and playing games with his siblings in the basement. Basketball, football, track and cross country are sports that Geert actively participates in. He advanced to state Cross Country this summer and participated in the Junior Olympics as well. Geert has been on the honor roll for four years. College is the next step for Geert. He would like to thank his parents for always supporting him in everything that he does! Freshmen to Participate in Youth Respect Retreat On Tuesday, February 3rd at 9:00 a.m., all 9th grade students from BGM will be a part of a Youth Respect Retreat. This event is in coordination with Montezuma and HLV freshmen as well. All three school's 9th graders will take part in an all day event that downtown Brooklyn. All three schools will provide will be held at the M. J. Manatts Center 8-10 11th or 12th grade High School mentors that will come and help lead these students through various activities. Coach Matt Smith presents Kayleen Beck with a plaque and the game ball from her 1000 point shot. Kayleen Beck scored her 1,000 career point against HLV on 1/6/15. Kayleen is only the second documented player in BGM girls 5 on 5 basketball history to achieve this milestone. Kayleen is truly grateful for all the support she has received from her family, friends and teammates over the last 4 seasons. Kayleen will be the first to admit that this was not a goal she set out to reach after scoring only 4 ppg her freshman year, but as time went on she knew that it was a possibility. She will also tell you that she couldn't have done this without the help of her teammates and coaches. What is BGM SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Chapter Up to??? Who We Are: The BGM (Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcom) SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Chapter shares the SADD National mission, which is to provide students with the best prevention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, and other destructive decisions. While the program is aimed at meeting the needs of students in grades 7-12, BGM SADD also invites families and community members to participate in selected events. We became a registered Chapter in the spring of 2013. The Recent Past: Our first goal of generating interest and participation in the SADD Chapter has been met, and we continue to gain new members. We identified and secured an available classroom in the BGM secondary school building and received administrative approval for its use. The room is used for SADD activities and events and provides a lounge atmosphere, as well. We were able to equip the room with attractive furnishings and make it inviting to students. Student interests and needs have guided the program, and recently students have been encouraged to take the lead in organizing activities and projects. One student-led highlight during the fall of 2014 was a “double” Halloween event. SADD participants organized and ran a party for children in 6th grade and younger on October 18, which featured games, snacks, costumes, contests, and a movie. That evening, these same SADD members held a dance for students in grades 7-12 and included a “haunted hallway” and snacks. One of the biggest developments during the past year has been starting an Outdoor Adventure Program in the spring of 2014. This project was based on student interest and has been a great fit for students in grades 7-12, some of whom have large amounts of unscheduled time on their hands, especially during the summer months. The Outdoor Adventure offers them a safe, healthy, engaging opportunity to spend some of those hours gaining lifelong skills and knowledge and enjoying each hour involved. The first year was a huge success as students immersed themselves in exploration of the outdoors. We went on numerous field trips that included but were not limited to Red Rock, Diamond Lake, Lake Nyanza, Rock Creek, Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve, and Bass Pro Shop. The most significant element of the program, however, was the planning and maintenance of a substantial (85' x 35') garden in the outdoor classroom at BGM Schools. With adult guidance, participating students helped make decisions about which vegetables to plant. They planted, watered, and weeded throughout the summer. The students then harvested the produce and learned to can and preserve a variety of vegetables. They made multiple batches of salsa and pepper jelly, both of which have been sold informally for free will donations, resulting in some income for our program. Later in the season, students carved pumpkins from the garden and baked pumpkin seeds. This gardening portion of the Outdoor Adventure Program met four primary goals: 1. Students will experience the complete cycle of plant life. 2. Students will comprehend where food comes from and what is needed to grow it. 3. Students will develop confidence and competence in terms of growing food. 4. Students will sample and enjoy the produce they have grown, eliminating the mystery of healthy food. Beyond the actual garden, participants in the SADD Outdoor Adventure Program familiarized themselves with BGM’s outdoor classroom, cleaning up some areas and doing some minor improvements. We began by contacting the fire department to do a prairie burn. In addition to creating the large vegetable garden, we planted sedums in one area and planted two plots of pollinator seeds that will attract butterflies and birds in future years. In addition to receiving a few small grants to help fund our program, we have benefited from donations of goods and money from individuals, businesses, and organizations in and around the Brooklyn community. One example is Hall’s Feed and Seed donating the time, equipment, and labor to till our entire garden as well as providing valuable advice and patient answers to our many gardening questions. The Brooklyn Ruritan organization provides a shed and a variety of tools for our use and covered the cost of work gloves and some of our plants last year. Where We’re Going: The BGM SADD Chapter holds weekly meeting and has several events planned for the near future. Our second annual 9th-12th grade Winter Semi-Formal Dance is scheduled for Saturday, January 17. A father/daughter dance and a mother/son movie meal night are being organized. The Brooklyn Kiwanis group has agreed to assist with both of these events. Movie nights and/or matinees will be scheduled throughout the remainder of the year, as well. In terms of the Outdoor Adventure Program, students will continue updating the school’s outdoor classroom. The next phase includes laying landscaping fabric on the walking trail and in other designated areas and then spreading wood chips on top and doing some additional planting. The Brooklyn Ruritans are generously supporting our mission again this year by agreeing to supply the landscaping fabric, a wagon, a hose reel cart, a wheelbarrow, work gloves, and plants for these projects. The design (see separate page) shows the outdoor classroom’s current set-up, as well as possible future additions such as seating and a stage. Our intent is not only to create an ideal space for the SADD Outdoor Adventure Program to utilize, but also to create an amazing educational resource area for BGM’s Pre-K through 12th grade classes to use (and possibly other area schools). We hope people from the community and surrounding areas will want to come walk around and explore in our outdoor classroom. The gardening portion of our program will continue in 2015. Current plans are to grow a variety of vegetables and add raised strawberry beds. We will expand our canning and preserving activities to include more produce. Besides the outdoor classroom and gardening projects, the Outdoor Adventure Program will continue to offer field trips, with more of an emphasis this year on hiking, fishing, orienteering, boating, camping, and biking. We are applying for a number of grants to help with the cost of equipment, supplies, and fees to make these field trips feasible. BGM’s SADD Chapter obviously incorporates a wide variety of activities to serve our young people. What all SADD-sponsored events have in common is providing a safe setting for youth to be together having fun without alcohol or other drugs. We strive to make it easier for young people to make healthy, safe choices by providing positive opportunities to replace some of the destructive activities they could be choosing. On Friday, February 27th National Honor Society will be sponsoring a Dance Marathon event from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM in the High School Cafeteria. Former BGM alum, Glenna Lovig, who is now a student at Iowa State contacted NHS about hosting the dance. There will be some students from Iowa State who will be attending and will help make it a successful event. All BGM 9th-12th graders are invited to attend. Cost of admission will be $3.00. NHS members will be raising support by asking pledges from people in the community. All money raised will be given to Children’s Miracle Network at the University of Iowa. Children’s Miracle Network assists sick children and their families by purchasing needed equipment and providing critical treatments. Community members may also donate by contacting Mr.Kriegel at 522-7058. In addition to dancing, other activities include; basketball, volleyball, corn hole, and dodge ball. So even if you are not a dancer you may still attend and have fun. Snacks will be provided. The goal is to keep everyone active for four hours in addition to raising money for Children’s Miracle Network. Please come out and help this worthy cause. The Iowa Department of Education has announced a series of February public forums and a statewide survey following a state panel’s recommendation to get public feedback on the Next Generation Science Standards. These are a set of learning expectations in science for students in kindergarten through high school. The Next Generation Science Standards were developed by 26 states, including Iowa. All states can consider adopting and adapting them to meet their needs. Public feedback will be used to provide guidance to the Science Standards Review Team, which is expected to submit a final recommendation regarding science standards to the State Board of Education later this year.
