Happy April Columbia Family,
I know April is not officially here until next week so that was a weak attempt at an early April
Fools. As April approaches, it signifies that this school year is almost over. Columbia is in its
third trimester and Mountain View is in its final quarter to put it in fractional terms. We still
have a lot of work remaining to ensure that your children are prepared to advance to the next
grade level. Teachers at both sites have been working diligently on assessments to determine
student growth. We have been and continue to have meaningful conversations about which
assessments to administer, why, and what to do with the results to ensure that every student
learns. For Columbia we have identified common assessments and timelines for administration
by grade level. Mountain View is in the same process. With common assessments administered
in the same time period for every grade level or department, teachers can have even more
meaningful discussions about what we want students to learn, and what we are going to do if
they don’t.
Speaking of student learning, please do not forget to join us for Open House at either campus
on April 10. This is a terrific opportunity to see what your students have been working on this
year and it gives you a chance to see potential classrooms for next year as well. Contact either
school office for exact times. Weather permitting, I will allow parking on the fields at
Columbia so please do not park along Old Oregon Trail.
At our Board meeting this week, the Board discussed the possibility of going out for a
construction bond. We had originally decided we would explore the feasibility in 2016, but I
have recently been told that Shasta Union High School District is going out for bond in 2016
instead of 2014. We did not want to be on the same ballot as the high school district as that
may be seen as a substantial tax increase by property owners and may limit our chance of
success. I am going to send a survey to all current parents via School Messenger (auto dialer)
with a link to the address in the email. The results and opinions will be used to create a survey
of all voters in our district. A company will then contact our constituents and determine what
level of support there is for a bond based on your feedback. I will keep you posted and your
feedback is going to be crucial to the process so be looking and listening for the survey soon.
We continue to work on our Local Control Accountability Plan and are adding a link to the
working document and goals for the next three years on the Columbia School District website.
I will have the newest version updated each Friday so that you can track our progress and
everyone is welcome to attend Site Council meetings if you would like to provide input. My goal
is to have the LCAP approved by Site Council at the May meeting. From there, we will have a
Public Hearing in June and then adopt it at our June Board meeting.
Spring Break is approaching quickly and there will be no school from April 14-21. Teachers will
be attending school on April 21st and we will be having our annual Kindergarten Round-Up on the
21st from 2-3pm. After we return from break, students in grades 3-8 will participate in the
statewide assessments. This is a Field Test year meaning that the state is using a new system
for assessments and all assessments will be administered via the computers. Even though we
have increased our number of computers significantly, the testing will likely take more time
than in the past so we will not be able to have all students assessed during the week of May 5-9
when we have minimum days. As this is a pilot year for the technology readiness of the state
and district, no student results will be available to either the school or the parents. We are
confident that our infrastructure to support this technology is adequate, but the Field Test will
also be a good indicator of our preparedness. Students in grades 3-8 have either begun or soon
will be taking practice tests and training tests in order to be more familiar with the new
format.
Road expansion update- Shasta County has been keeping me informed of progress for Old
Oregon Trail in front of Columbia south to Viking. Current plans are for construction of the
road widening, bike lane, turn lane, and straightening to begin June 9 which is the Monday after
our last day of school. If everything goes according to plan, the project will be completed by
the time school starts in the fall. Shasta County will also be paving the section of Jill Ln. along
our southern property line for the eventual use as an exit for Columbia.
Curriculum update- A teacher from every grade level or math department at Mountain View has
been involved in a three day process hosted by Shasta County Office of Education. The process
was to compare textbooks and to narrow the selection to possibly one curriculum used in Shasta
County. To this point no final selection or local decision has been made. The same process will
repeat next year for a possible Language Arts adoption and the year after that for science
including the Next Generation Science Standards. With our increased capacity to provide
access to technology, I am encouraging our teachers to look for curriculum that is accessible via
the internet.
Happy April!

Triple P: Positive Parenting Program:
http://www.triplepshasta.com
Number 5 of the 5 Main Steps to Positive Parenting is: Take Care of Yourself as a Parent
Raising children can often feel like a full time job and it’s easy to get into a pattern of putting off your own
personal needs. But parenting can actually be easier when you take the time to seek out peer support,
companionship, intimacy, recreation and even time alone! If your own needs as an adult are being met, it’s
much easier to be patient, consistent and available to your child. Some tips to help you take care of yourself
include, balance work and family by having realistic expectations of yourself at work, when you are upset with
your child take time to identify what negative things you might be saying to yourself and try to change those
thoughts to more helpful ones, and work as a team with your partner by finding ways to back each other up.
The school year is winding up or down, depending upon your outlook. Enjoy the Spring Break coming up
and stay healthy. Focus on the joys in life and remember to laugh.
“Nacho” Average Bookfair
This will be the biggest and best bookfair ever! Why you ask? This year if we reach our goal
of 1513 books sold our whole school will be treated to Nacho’s! That’s right Nacho’s for the
school and our very own Mr. Ross will be sportin a Serape, Sombrero and riding a burro
(okay the burro part we may have to stretch a bit). If you need any new books for summer
reading, birthday gifts etc., now is the time to get them. Come on out and support
Columbia at “Nacho Average Bookfair”!
