A Letter From The Pastoral Staff...

as possible if you are moving.

St. Francis Parish. Group Baptisms are the 2nd Saturday at
10:00 AM and the last Sunday at 12:45 PM each month at
St. Francis Church in Brant Beach. Baptisms during Mass are
celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of each month at the last Mass in
each Church. Call the Parish Office for availability and
requirements: at (609) 494-8813 ext. 154 or 155.
Faith Formation and Education: For children ages six
through high school. Please call Theresa Cassata, ofs at
(609) 494-8813 ext. 153 for more information.
Marriage: In accordance with the Common Policy of the five
Dioceses of New Jersey, arrangements must be made ONE
YEAR in advance. Couples are required to attend Marriage
Preparation classes. Weddings are performed on Friday or
Saturday. Weddings are NOT performed on Sundays, the
beach, Memorial Day, Fourth of July or Labor Day weekends.
Pastoral Visitations: Please notify the Parish Office if you or
any of your loved ones are ill, homebound, in SOMC, nursing
homes or rehabilitation centers.
The Second Book of Chronicles contains the history of the
divided monarchy of the Jewish Kings, starting with Solomon
til the period of the end of the Kings and the Exile to Babylon.
The major sin of the people was that time was infidelity,
idolatry and false gods. The punishment by God was to remove
favor from the people. The result was the destruction of the
beloved temple in Jerusalem, then the exile into Babylon. The
first reading states that God sent messengers to the people so
that they would change their behavior and attitudes away from
idols. The messengers were rejected by the people. The word
“anger” in the reading is used by the writer. Interesting a
non-believer will be the redeemer of the people, the Persian
King Cyrus. He will defeat the Babylonian Empire and free the
people of God to return to their homes in Jerusalem. The image
of God in Chronicles is an image of God that I can relate to as
a small child. Our image then was one of fear. If you crossed
the line away from God, you or I would be struck down by
lightning. Now either I wasn’t that bad or that image of God
was not the real image of our God. In Luke’s Gospel Jesus
speaks during the Crucifixion, “Father, Forgive them, they do
not know what they are doing”. That does not seem to fit with
the Chronicles image of an angry God; I would prefer a
forgiving and compassionate God.

Passion (Palm) Sunday Masses - March 28/29
The Gospel Reading from John tells us about Nicodemus.
Scholars describe Nicodemus as a Pharisee, and perhaps a
member of the Sanhedrin or council. The council was
composed of 70 Elders, High Priests, Scribes, and Pharisees.
Secondly, biblical scholars point out that he was probably a
wealthy man as well. The question of Nicodemus was why did
he visit at night in secret? The popular thinking is that he was
afraid of the consequences. He may have been shun by his
fellow Jews and the council or maybe it would have hurt him
financially.
In the next couple of weeks we will hear that the Sanhedrin
will plot to arrest Jesus and put him to death. I often wondered
how I would have reacted to Jesus. Would I have been a
hidden, quiet believer or braved the public opinion and did what
I felt was the right thing to do, following Jesus. I will never
know but I often look harshly on a person like Nicodemus’
timid personality. I hope that I would have the direction and
courage to be a faithful follower in all situations.
Perhaps we can take a minute and pray for the people who
are persecuted or put to death for their faith. I hope our prayer
will strengthen them and change the attitudes of their
persecutors.

Immigration Reform: How often do we let our fears overtake
our Christian values? Though a nation of immigrants, how
often is our country swayed by fear rather than fact regarding
undocumented immigrants?
Let us prayerfully consider some facts:
1. Most undocumented immigrants are here for more than 10
years – working, paying taxes, and contributing to our
communities,
2. More than 5,100 children whose parents are undocumented
immigrants are in the U.S. foster system because their
parents have been detained or deported,
3. Many immigrants come at the U.S.’ invitation to work in
agriculture and meet other U.S. employer’s needs.
Immigrants create one-fourth of new businesses, providing
many new jobs.
During Lent, let us fast from our fears and reconsider
immigration policies that ensure family unity, protect the rights
of immigrant workers, and provide a pathway to citizenship for
the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. today.
