UEFA President’s message
Poruka predsjednika UEFA-e
After the huge success of UEFA Futsal EURO 2010,
when 12 teams contested the finals for the first
time, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Croatia
for UEFA Futsal EURO 2012, hosted by the Croatian
Football Federation in the beautiful cities of Zagreb
and Split. The state-of-the-art arenas in both host
cities are ready to welcome large crowds eager to
watch some of the best futsal players in the world.
The current attendance record, set by the 58,852
fans who attended the final tournament in Hungary
two years ago, could soon be broken.
The top quality futsal the continent’s most skilful
players will display over the next 12 days and the
great atmosphere created by the supporters
guarantee a great show at every match for players,
fans and the media alike. It only remains for me to
thank the Croatian Football Federation and its
president, Vlatko Marković, as well as the
authorities of Zagreb and Split and the numerous
volunteers, for all the work and commitment they
have put in to preparing and staging such a
major tournament.
Nakon velikog uspjeha prošlog Europskog
prvenstva, UEFA Futsal EURO 2010., kad je prvi put
12 momčadi sudjelovalo na završnom turniru,
zadovoljstvo mi je poželjeti vam dobrodošlicu na
UEFA Futsal EURO 2012. u ime domaćina - Hrvatskog
nogometnog saveza te gradova Zagreba i Splita.
Vrhunski izgrađene i opremljene arene u oba grada
turnira. Ta bi brojka uskoro mogla biti nadmašena.
Visoka kvaliteta najvještijih igrača kontinenta i
izvanredna atmosfera koju će stvoriti njihovi
navijači, u sljedećih 12 dana jamče izvrsnu
predstavu za igrače, ljubitelje futsala i medije.
Preostaje mi samo zahvaliti Hrvatskom
nogometnom savezu i predsjedniku saveza Vlatku
Markoviću, nadležnim organizacijama u Zagrebu i
predanosti u organizaciji i pripremi ovog
velikog turnira.

Predsjednik UEFA-e
Respect is a key principle of football and futsal and
the cornerstone of UEFA’s values. Respect for the
Game, Diversity and the Environment is a message
UEFA promotes at all its matches – with the aim
of preserving the integrity and health of the sport
at all levels, of protecting and perpetuating the
values of football, and of showing solidarity.
The Respect campaign highlights UEFA’s
commitment to banishing all forms of violence
and discrimination, and to promoting respect not
only for referees, opponents and match officials,
but also for rival supporters, national anthems
and flags. It encourages humanitarian aid and
respect for fan culture, intercultural dialogue
and a healthy lifestyle. Join in our call for Respect
and help us spread the message. Football unites
in the spirit of Respect.
Poštovanje (“Respect”) je glavno načelo nogometa
i futsala te kamen temeljac UEFA-inih vrijednosti.
solidarnosti.
Michel Platini
UEFA President
Kampanja poštovanja važan je dio UEFA-inih
nastojanja da se iskorijene svi oblici nasilja i
diskriminacije te promovira poštovanje, ne samo
prema sucima, protivnicima i dužnosnicima na
utakmicama, već i prema protivničkim navijačima,
nacionalnoj himni i zastavi. UEFA potiče
humanitarnu pomoć, poštovanje prema navijačkoj
kulturi, međukulturalni dijalog i zdrav život.
Pridružite se našem širenju poštovanja.

Welcome to Croatia
Dobro došli u Hrvatsku
From 31 January 2012, Croatia will host a big
sporting event, which is a great source of happiness
for us. With special excitement, we have agreed to
host the final round of the 2011/12 UEFA European
Futsal Championship – otherwise known as UEFA
Futsal EURO 2012 – knowing that this is a major
tournament. If there was ever any doubt, it is now
absolutely clear that futsal is developing incredibly
fast and has become one of the most exciting
sectors of football, as this final tournament in
Croatia will surely underline.
Od 31. siječnja 2012., Hrvatska će biti domaćin
velikog sportskog natjecanja, zbog čega smo vrlo
ponosni i sretni. S posebnim zadovoljstvom
prihvatili smo ulogu domaćina finalnog turnira
UEFA-ina Europskog prvenstva u futsalu 2011./12. tj.
finalni turnir u Hrvatskoj sigurno dokazati.
As a relatively small association, but one in which
all of us work for the love of football and with great
devotion to the game, we have done our utmost to
be able to welcome our sports friends to a superbly
organised event and to allow them to achieve top
results. We will continue our efforts until the very
end of the tournament, to ensure that it is a success
from start to finish.
Mi smo relativno mali sportski savez, ali svi radimo
s ljubavlju i predanosti nogometu te činimo sve
kako bismo našim sportskim prijateljima priredili
iznimno kvalitetno organiziran sportski događaj i
omogućili postizanje najboljih rezultata. Naša
nastojanja nastavit ćemo sve do samog završetka
turnira, kako bi osigurali njegov potpuni uspjeh.
Special mention must go to Zagreb and Split, two of
the largest cities in Croatia, who will do absolutely
everything to be the best possible hosts and to
make you want to return to our country one day. I
am sure too that all the participants will go home
with lasting memories of the two beautiful new
arenas, regardless of the results. Dear friends, let
football unite us once again, let the tournament
begin, and may the best team win!
Vlatko Marković
Croatian Football Federation president
Posebno moramo istaknuti Zagreb i Split, dva
najveća grada u Hrvatskoj, koji će također uložiti
sve napore da budu najbolji mogući domaćini i u
svim posjetiteljima probude želju da se jednoga
dana vrate u Hrvatsku. Siguran sam da će se svi
sudionici, bez obzira na postignute rezultate, nakon
turnira vratiti svojim domovima s trajnim
sjećanjima na dvije krasne nove arene. Dragi
prijatelji, neka nas nogomet još jednom sve
zbliži. Neka turnir započne i neka najbolja
reprezentacija pobjedi!

Football has taken Slaven Bilić around the world
but ask Croatia’s national team coach which city
he loves best and it is clear that his heart
remains in his home town of Split. Now, as UEFA
Futsal EURO 2012 comes to Split and Zagreb, he
gives an insight into both the stunning Adriatic
port and the Croatian capital.
“People in Split like to say it is the most beautiful
city in the world. It’s an extraordinary place with an
amazing old town. It is on the sea, folk are friendly
and the city is just the right size – neither too big
nor too small – to get to know in seven days. The
food is excellent too – the fish in Dalmatia goes
directly from the sea to your plate – with many
restaurants and great bars to enjoy it. More and
more people visit Split and Zagreb throughout the
year, not just summer, although Split especially is a
tourist destination. The climate is excellent, the
must-see old town features Roman Emperor
Diocletian’s Palace, the old Roman Peristyle and the
Sveti Duje Cathedral, and there are amazing
sea-front walks with coffee and lunch options along
the way. You should also visit Hajduk’s beautiful
shell-shaped stadium – the club is the symbol of
Split – and the hill-top Marijan forest, another great
location for a walk. The people of Zagreb are also
warm but the city is different from Split. Zagreb is
more continental and comparable to other
European capitals, with architecture similar to
Prague. It’s an attractive place to spend time and
has so much to offer – St Mark’s Church, numerous
museums, restaurants, bars, theatres and concert
venues. I’m sure the Futsal EURO will be well
organised and well attended. It’s a great
thing for Croatia and Croatian football.“
Zagreb
Uz nogomet je Slaven Bilić proputovao cijeli
svijet, no ako upitate izbornika hrvatske
njegov rodni Split. Sada, kada UEFA-ino
Europsko prvenstvo u futsalu 2012. dolazi u Split
i Zagreb, Bilić nas upoznaje s tim sjajnim
jadranskim biserom, kao i s hrvatskim
glavnim gradom.
“Ljudi u Splitu vole reći kako je njihov grad najljepši
na svijetu. I zaista, to je impozantno mjesto s
prekrasnim starim gradom.
u gradu imate mnogo restorana i barova u kojima
možete uživati. “Sve više ljudi cijele godine
posjećuje Zagreb i Split. Pogotovo Split je posebno
omiljeno odredište za turiste. Klima je fantastična, a
u starom gradu, kojeg obavezno treba pogledati,
nalazi se rimska palača cara Dioklecijana, stari
rimski peristil i katedrala Svetog Duje. Naravno, tu
vas čekaju i šetnice uz obalu sa stalnim odredištima
za dobro jelo i piće. Trebali biste posjetiti i prekrasni
“školjkasti” stadion Hajduka, sportskog simbola
Splita, a na vaš posjet čeka i šumovito brdo Marjan,
još jedna izvrsna lokacija za šetnju. “Ljudi u Zagrebu
usporediti s drugim europskim glavnim gradovima.
Arhitekturom nalikuje Pragu. To je pravi velegrad, s
mnogim zanimljivostima - od crkve Svetog Marka
do brojnih muzeja, restorana, barova, kazališta i
koncertnih dvorana.
Hrvatsku i hrvatski nogomet uopće.”

Croatia’s capital is home to around 800,000 people and its
stunning Arena Zagreb is the largest capacity venue to stage
UEFA European Futsal Championship final tournament matches.
MNK Nacional Zagreb were 2009/10 Croatian futsal champions,
but football’s GNK Dinamo Zagreb have enjoyed most success in
the city, winning the past six national titles and 13 in all since
the Croatian first league was formed in 1992. Former Croatia
coach Zlatko Kranjčar and his son and current international Niko
come from Zagreb as do skiing legend Janica Kostelić and 1997
French Open champion Iva Majoli.

Located in southern Croatia on the Adriatic coast, Split is the
nation’s second city with a population of around 180,000. Home
to six-times Croatian champions HNK Hajduk Split, the city has a
great sporting tradition and counts Slaven Bilić, Aljoša
Asanović, Alen Bokšić and Goran Ivanišević among its famous
sons. In futsal, MNK Split have been the dominant force and
reached the 2001/02 UEFA Futsal Cup semi-finals, perhaps
Croatia’s greatest achievement in the sport. Based in the Lora
district, near Hajduk’s Stadion Poljud, the Spaladium Arena
takes its name from the Latin name for Split.

utakmice finalnog turnira Europskog prvenstva u futsalu.
MNK Nacional Zagreb. GNK Dinamo Zagreb, najuspješnija
nogometna ekipa u gradu, osvojio je šest uzastopnih naslova
državnih prvaka, a ukupno 13 otkad je 1992. osnovana Prva
hrvatska liga.

stanovnika. Iz Splita je HNK Hajduk,šesterostruki prvak
Hrvatske, a slavnu sportsku tradiciju grada dopunjuju Slaven
Bilić, Aljoša Asanović, Alen Bokšić i Goran Ivanišević brojni
latinskog imena Splita.

As tournament hosts, Croatia are
back on the UEFA European Futsal
Championship stage for the first
time in over a decade and their
captain, Tihomir Novak, is
determined that they capitalise
on a golden opportunity “to do
something that will be
remembered in the futsal world”.
For Novak, UEFA Futsal EURO
2012 offers the perfect chance
to promote the sport in Croatia.
The MNK Split defender is
nonetheless aware that its
impact will be hugely increased if
the home team can give their supporters
something to shout about. “This is a great chance
to attract people to the arenas – the people who
have already shown that they like futsal and those
who are going to like it even more after this
competition,” says the 25-year-old. “But our
involvement in the competition is not enough; we
need to do something on the pitch, to achieve a
significant result.”
Key to the home side’s prospects, he adds, is their
ability to handle the “extra pressure” of playing in
front of large crowds with “huge expectations” –
something they are not used to. “We’re aware that
we’ll have our fans in the stands and we’re all
hoping we will respond well to that and put in the
extra effort for them on the pitch.”
Croatia kick off the tournament against Group A
rivals Romania before being reacquainted
with the Czech Republic side that
ended their hopes of qualifying for the
2010 finals. Novak has painful memories
of that March 2009 defeat in Ostrava –
needing only to draw, he put his team 2-1
ahead in the 39th minute, only for them to concede
twice before the final whistle and miss out. “We’re
waiting to avenge our defeat in the last qualifiers
and we’ll be playing at home,” he says.
Novak sees plenty of reasons to be optimistic about
his team’s qualities too, not least thanks to the
influence of coach Mato Stanković, who also
oversees his club side and is adept at “keeping
team spirit strong”. Meanwhile, players such as
Dario Marinović and Josip Suton possess the ability
to beat defenders. “We’re strongest in one-on-one
duels, also in dribbling,” says Novak, himself
capable of outfoxing opponents.
And
how far
can they go?
Novak considers
Spain the favourites,
followed by Russia,
Italy and Portugal, but he is
optimistic about Croatia’s
prospects. “I believe that if we
find our top form, and with a little
help from our fans, we can reach the
knockout phase. If we get past the group
stage, anything is possible.”
Kao domaćin turnira, Hrvatska ponovno sudjeluje
na UEFA-inu Europskom prvenstvu u futsalu, prvi
put u posljednjih deset godina. Njezin kapetan,
ekipa dosad nije navikla. “Jasno nam je da će
tribine biti pune naših navijača i nadamo se da
ćemo na to dobro reagirati i još se više potruditi na
terenu.”
skupine A: Rumunjskom, a zatim ih čeka utakmica s
Češkom koja je Hrvatsku izbacila u kvalifikacijama
2010. godine.
39. minuti, no do kraja susreta Česi su postigli još
dva gola i time Hrvatsku izbacili iz natjecanja.
“Želimo se revanširati za poraz u posljednjim
kvalifikacijama, a dodatno nam pomaže činjenica
on bitno utječe na održavanju momčadskog duha.
Igrači Dario Marinović i Josip Suton imaju dovoljno
vještine za nadmudrivanje protivničke obrane.
“Najjači smo u igri jedan na jedan i u driblingu”
kaže Novak, koji i sam spretan u nadigravanju.
No koliko daleko Hrvatska može dospjeti na ovom
turniru? Novak smatra da su Španjolci favoriti za
osvajanje naslova, zatim slijede Rusija, Italija i
Portugal, no optimističan je i kad je riječ o
izgledima Hrvatske. “Vjerujem da možemo proći
dalje, ako dostignemo vrhunsku formu i budemo
imali podršku navijača. Prođemo li u drugu fazu
natjecanja, sve je moguće.”

COACH
IZBORNIK
Mato Stanković 28/09/1970
Stanković was a lower-division football
player before switching to futsal, helping
MNK Split to the 1996/97 Croatian title.
It was there he began coaching and he
quickly proved successful, winning five
league titles in six years. After claiming
African and Arab titles as Libya coach,
he took over Croatia in 2010.
Izvorno igrač “velikog” nogometa, Stanković je
u sezoni 1996./97. osvojio prvenstvo Hrvatske u
futsalu s MNK Splitom. Ondje je započeo
trenersku karijeru i brzo dokazao svoju kvalitetu,
osvajajući pet prvenstava u šest godina. Nakon
osvajanja afričkog i arapskog prvenstva kao
izbornik Libije, 2010. vraća se u Hrvatsku
i preuzima reprezentaciju.

Croatia have been absent from the UEFA European
Futsal Championship finals since 2001 but, back
in the big time as hosts, they are aiming to make
a telling impact. Respected coach Mato Stanković
returned home in summer 2010 to revive the
team and oversaw positive performances that
November when his side won the inaugural
Mediterranean Cup in Libya by beating the hosts
on penalties, having previously defeated future
EURO qualifiers Turkey and Slovenia. Then, in June
2011, they overcame Argentina 3-0 in a friendly
to show they could handle the best.
The team’s key talent is 21-year-old forward Dario
Marinović, while Ivo Jukić is a fine goalkeeper,
and although they and their team-mates remain
unproven at this level, Stanković does not believe
their inexperience will prove costly. “I should say
that I’m afraid or something like that, just to give
me an excuse for failure in advance, but no,” he
explained. “I will say that I think there are four or
five national teams that are really better than us,
while the rest are also good teams, but we can
match any of those. Success in futsal also depends
on the day, the moment, luck. I hope the
atmosphere will be great.”
Qualifying results and tables, pages 45-47
Hrvatska na završnom turniru Europskog prvenstva
u futsalu nije nastupila još od 2001. godine, no kako
ciljaju visoko. Njihov izbornik, Mato Stanković vratio
se u Hrvatsku 2010. i preporodio reprezentaciju koja
je u studenome osvojila Mediteranski kup u Libiji
porazivši Tursku, Sloveniju i domaćine u finalu.
U lipnju 2011. pobijedili su i Argentinu 3:0 i time
način unaprijed dobiti izgovor za lošu predstavu, no
to neću napraviti,” objašnjava Stanković. “Ono što
ću svakako reći je da je 4-5 reprezentacija neupitno
bolje od naše, a s ostalima se, bez obzira na njihovu
kvalitetu, možemo nositi. Uspjeh u futsalu također
ovisi o tome kakav imate dan, o trenutku, o sreći.
Nadam se da će atmosfera biti izvrsna.”

Having seemed to be struggling to maintain their
top-class status prior to UEFA Futsal EURO 2010, the
Czech Republic’s run to finish third in Hungary put
them right back among the best. Their possession
game makes them very difficult opponents and
they have developed a habit of scoring crucial
late goals, both in qualifying and in their dramatic
6-5 group elimination of the hosts two years ago.
David Frič is the catalyst up front while brothers
Roman and Michal Mareš are the team’s stars.
Prije UEFA-ina Europskog prvenstva u futsalu 2010.,
no njeno treće mjesto u Mađarskoj ponovno
momčadi braća Roman i Michal Mareš.
The former Czechoslovakia were among the earliest
nations to play futsal competitively, but it was only
after Michal Stříž took over the separate Czech
Republic team that they became a force, qualifying
for the continental showcase in 2001, making the
semis two years later, acting as hosts in 2005 and
consistently reaching the finals since in both this
competition and the FIFA Futsal World Cup. Coach
Tomáš Neumann will be looking to avenge his
side’s loss to Romania in qualifying, and is relishing
a meeting with hosts Croatia. “In the last two
championships we’ve happened to play against
the home team in our group,” he said. “It’s great,
because we’ll play in front of a full house and
excellent supporters.”
kojoj se futsal počeo igrati profesionalno, no tek
dolaskom Michala Stříža na kormilo reprezentacije
Češke postali su prava sila. Kvalificirali su se za
Europsko prvenstvo 2001., dvije godine poslije igrali
su u polufinalu, bili su domaćin 2005. Nakon toga
stalno stižu do završnice ovog natjecanja, kao i
Svjetskog prvenstva u futsalu. Izbornik Tomáš
Neumann računa na osvetu protiv Rumunjske (koja
je Češku pobijedila u kvalifikacijama) i jedva čeka
da se ogledaju protiv Hrvatske. “Posljednja dva
prvenstva igrali smo u skupini protiv domaćina,”
izjavio je. “To je izvrsno jer tada igramo pred
punim dvoranama uz podršku odlične publike.”

Romania were latecomers to futsal, yet although
the national team were founded as recently as 2003
they are now in their second EURO in three editions
having first qualified in 2007. Players such as Florin
Robert Matei, Robert Lupu, Cosmin Gherman,
Gabriel Dobre, Ion Al-Ioani, Marian Şotârcă and
Dumitru Stoica have been in the team since the
early days and have tended to play together at club
level too, first with FC CIP Deva and latterly at
City’Us Târgu Mureş.
Lupu, Gherman and Matei can always be relied
upon to score vital goals, and given that they beat
Group A rivals Czech Republic in qualifying to reach
the finals, Romanian confidence is high. “In recent
years we’ve gained plenty of respect in the futsal
world and nobody will underestimate us,” said
Lupu, who is particularly looking forward to
meeting hosts Croatia in the tournament’s
opening game. “I know there will be 10,000
Croatians in the stands but there will also be
hundreds of Romanians and they are also noisy.
If you can’t handle pressure like that, you shouldn’t
be playing at these tournaments. We are really
looking forward to it.”

tribinama biti 10.000 hrvatskih navijača, no bit će
tu i stotine glasnih Rumunja.

COACH
IZBORNIK
José Venancio
27/06/1964
Venancio rose to prominence leading Segovia
FS to a 1998/99 treble and international
success. After spells with Guatemala and
Autos Lobelle de Santiago FS, he replaced
Javier Lozano at the Spain helm, having
assisted his predecessor, and followed up
UEFA Futsal EURO 2007 triumph with repeat
success in 2010.
Venancio svoju je uspješnu međunarodnu
trenersku karijeru započeo s klubom Segovia
FS u sezoni 1998./99. Nakon vođenja Guatemale
i ekipe Autos Lobelle de Santiago FS, zamijenio
je Javiera Lozana za kormilom Španjolske.
Reprezentaciju je doveo do titule prvaka
Europe 2007. godine a isti uspjeh je ponovio
i tri godine kasnije.

Dominant Spain are aiming for their fourth straight
title. Bolstered by brilliant goalkeeper Luis Amado,
the tactical nous of Kike and the flair of Fernandao,
Torras and new talents including Pola, Spain have
barely missed a step since established favourites
Javi Rodríguez and Daniel retired following the
2010 triumph. Their rise began when Javier Lozano
became coach in 1992 and he oversaw success
in the first unofficial European showcase in 1996
before claiming UEFA European Futsal Championship
glory in 2001 and 2005, and the 2000 and 2004
FIFA Futsal World Cups.
Dominantna Španjolska cilja na svoju četvrtu
uzastopnu titulu. Potpomognuta sjajnim vratarom
Luisom Amadom, Kikeovom taktikom
ieksplozivnošću Fernandaoa i Torrasa, Španjolska
Prvu
pobjedu izvojevali su na neslužbenom Europskom
prvenstvu 1996., a zatim su osvojili Europsko
prvenstvo 2001. i 2005. te Svjetska prvenstva
2000. i 2004.
Since José Venancio succeeded Lozano in 2007, they
have added two more continental crowns and only
lost the 2008 World Cup final to hosts Brazil on
penalties. In addition, they have not lost over
40 minutes in a competitive fixture since the 2005
European Championship group stage, when they still
won the tournament. “Our goal is to try to become
European champions for the fourth consecutive
time, which would be historic,” Venancio said. “But
it’s also true that we have to take things step by
step and first qualify for the quarter-finals.
Even though this group is negotiable, you have
to consider that Ukraine have a lot of experience.”
Otkad je José Venancio 2007. zamijenio Lozana,
dodali su još dvije europske krune i jedino izgubili
Svjetsko prvenstvo od domaćina Brazila nakon
izvođenja kaznenih udaraca. Još od skupina na
Europskom prvenstvu 2005. nisu izgubili utakmicu u
povijesni rezultat,” izjavljuje Venancio. Ipak,

COACH
IZBORNIK
Gennadiy Lysenchuk 18/12/1947
That Ukraine are a futsal force is down
to former football goalkeeper Lysenchuk.
Also president of the Futsal Federation
of Ukraine, Lysenchuk founded the team
in 1994 and led them to the final of the
2001 and 2003 UEFA European Futsal
Championships, as well as winning two
World University Futsal Championships.
Zasluge za uspjeh ukrajinskog futsala
pripadaju izborniku Lisenčuku. Kao predsjednik
Ukrajinskog futsal saveza, Lisenčuk je
nacionalnu momčad osnovao 1994. i odveo
je do finala UEFA-ina Europskog prvenstva 2001.
i 2003. S njome je također dva puta osvojio

Two-time UEFA European Futsal Championship
runners-up, the always well-organised but
attack-minded Ukraine are aiming to go one better
in 2012 and have a solid record at this level to back
up their ambitions. Gennadiy Lysenchuk set up the
team in 1994 and remains the coach, having kicked
off by reaching the 1996 FIFA Futsal World Cup
semi-finals in his first tournament. He then
led Ukraine to the 2001 and 2003 European
Championship showpiece games, losing to Spain
and Italy respectively, while at student level Ukraine
have twice sealed international university success.
Lysenchuk has blooded a new generation in recent
years after the retirement of key men such as Serhiy
Koridze. Those younger players include forward
Dmitriy Klochko and defender Dmytro Sorokin, while
Yevgen Rogachov, Valeriy Legchanov and Serhiy
Cheporniuk ensure there is still plenty of experience.
“I think we will reach the semi-finals and win one of
the medals,” Lysenchuk said. “Certainly we would like
to win gold. We have won silver twice, but that was a
long time ago, in 2001 in Russia and 2003 in Italy. We
have never won bronze, so any medal we pick up for
our performances in Croatia will be a real honour.”

Dvostruki finalist Europskih prvenstava, dobro
organizirana momčad Ukrajine, nada se konačnom
trijumfu ove godine, a njeni dosadašnji rezultati
govore u prilog ovakvim ambicijama. Genadij
prvom Svjetskom prvenstvu u futsalu 1996. godine
generaciji. Među mladim talentima su Dmitrij
Kločko i Dmitro Sorokin, dok Roganov, Legčanov i
Čepornjuk osiguravaju iskustvo. “Smatram da ćemo
stići do polufinala i osvojiti jednu od medalja,”
izjavljuje Lisenčuk. “Jasno, željeli bismo osvojiti
zlato. Dvaput smo bili srebrni, no to je bilo prilično
davno: 2001. u Rusiji i 2003. u Italiji. Broncu dosad
nismo osvojili, stoga će osvajanje bilo koje medalje
u Hrvatskoj za nas biti velika čast.”

COACH
IZBORNIK
Andrej Dobovičnik 14/10/1967
Dobovičnik works for a leading
telecommunications firm, but his passion
is sport and above all futsal; indeed, he
continues to play with his contemporaries.
A former Slovenia international, he won
titles at KMN Juventus, KMN Mizarstvo
Širovnik and EM Pelikani, coaching the latter
before taking over the national side in 2005.
Dobovičnik radi za vodećeg
telekomunikacijskog operatera, no njegova

Slovenia are one of several nations to emerge from
the former Yugoslavia with futsal as a popular
winter sport and they are in their third final
tournament at this level, showing they can compete
with more established nations on the international
scene. Andrej Dobovičnik has a young team with a
fine spirit and his players will be aiming to learn
from their defeats by Russia and Serbia at the 2010
finals – their first appearance for seven years –
when they tackle holders Spain and Ukraine.
i Srbije u finalnom turniru 2010. (njihovom prvom
u sedam godina) kada na teren izađu protiv
Španjolske i Ukrajine.
An injury to winger Gašper Vrhovec deprives
Dobovičnik of a vital link between defence and
attack, but, as befits one of the participating nations
at the 2008 UEFA European Under-21 Futsal
Tournament, Slovenia boast several young talents,
with the likes of Kristjan Čujec and Rok Mordej
aiding key man Benjamin Melink. Dobovičnik is also
hoping plenty of supporters will make the short trip
to Zagreb for their group games. “The fans can give
us that additional strength, that additional
motivation to the players that can lift them to play
above their capabilities, and I hope we’ll cause a
surprise together,” he said. “I believe in this team
and I’m taking this championship as a big but
pleasant challenge.”
obrane i napada.
utakmicama skupine. “Naši nam navijači daju tu
dodatnu snagu i motivaciju, podižu igrače iznad
njihovih mogućnosti. Nadam se da svi zajedno
možemo ugodno iznenaditi,” rekao je Dobovičnik.
“Ja vjerujem u svoju ekipu i ovo prvenstvo
smatram velikim, ali ugodnim izazovom.”

When Robert Jarni talks about winning converts to
futsal, it is worth listening. This, after all, is a man
who took up the small-sided game in his mid-30s
after hanging up his football boots – and ended up
pursuing it to international standard. “When I
was playing football in Spain, I’d see futsal on TV
and didn’t really like it, but once I started playing
the game I really loved it,” says the Croatian, now
an ambassador for the UEFA Futsal EURO
2012 tournament.
Explaining his conversion, Jarni, capped 81 times by
Croatia’s football team, continues: “When I finished
my career at 34, I switched to futsal because friends
asked me to go and train with them.” In the
process, he fell in love with the game. “It is much
more difficult playing futsal than football – in futsal,
there is no break, it’s four v four and if one person
makes a mistake or doesn’t cover a space then you
can lose the game. With 11-a-side, there is always
someone who can help you out.”
One pivotal difference he found was futsal’s greater
speed and intensity. “You run three, four metres
then have to stop and turn the other way. In
football, as a full-back you play a 60-metre pass
and until the ball comes back you can have a
coffee,” he jokes. If his own speed allowed him to
adapt, getting used to the different ball was less
straightforward. “A lot of times I’d fall over the
ball,” he remembers, though he cannot have been
red-faced for long given that he went on to
represent MNK Split in the UEFA Futsal Cup. Jarni is
encouraged by the sport’s growing popularity in
Croatia and believes its technical demands can help
with the development of young football talent too.
Pointing to the example of Brazil, he says: “Why do
Brazilians always have better technique than us
Europeans? Because they play futsal first and in
futsal you have to have good technique, so they
have that from when they’re small.”
Jarni, 43, played futsal as a boy in his hometown,
Cakovec, before embarking on a football career that
featured the highs of reaching the 1998 FIFA World
Cup semi-final with Croatia as well as the last eight
at EURO ‘96. “Getting third place in the world in
1998 as well as playing for Juventus and Real
Madrid – that’s what every player dreams of.” He
also recalls the “great pride” of playing for Croatia
as the nation took its first steps on the international
football stage in the 1990s. “More or less 90% of
the players were playing outside our country and
we were ambassadors for our country.”
There will be similar pride among Croatia’s futsal
players as they perform in front of their home
supporters. “We are very passionate about sport,
very ambitious and have great pride in our
country. It’s the first time we’re [hosting]
a European Championship, [but] we’ve a
fair amount of experience and can
aspire to do something.” Given the
threat posed by “Spain, Italy, Portugal,
Ukraine, Russia”, that something may
just be surviving the group phase. “Even
if we only get through the first stage, it
would be fantastic,” says Jarni, who is
hopeful of seeing signs of progress
elsewhere too. “This championship will do
a lot for the popularity of futsal in
Croatia and more kids will start to
play,” he adds, optimistic about
the possibility of
a new generation
of converts.
Roberta Jarnija vrijedi poslušati kad govori o tome
nogometne karijere, počeo igrati futsal i dogurao
do reprezentativne razine. “Kada sam igrao
nogomet u Španjolskoj gledao sam futsal na TV-u i
nije me osobito oduševio, no kada sam ga počeo
igrati, stvarno sam ga zavolio”, kaže nam Jarni, sada
ambasador turnira UEFA Futsal EURO 2012.
reprezentaciju Hrvatske, Jarni odgovara: “Kada sam
završio nogometnu karijeru u 34. godini, prijatelji su
me pozvali da treniram futsal s njima i ja sam
pristao.” Za vrijeme tih treninga zavolio je
futsal i počeo poštovati one koji ga igraju.
“Mnogo je teže igrati futsal od nogometa. U
futsalu nema prekida.
nogomet. “Trčiš tri - četiri metra, pa se moraš
zaustaviti i trčati natrag. U nogometu, kao
branič, ispucaš loptu 60 metara dalje i za
vrijeme dok se ona vrati možeš popiti
kavu,” šali se Jarni. Čak i ako mu
je njegova brzina pomogla
da se prilagodi
futsalu, naviknuti
se na drugačiju
loptu bilo je
malo teže.
“Stalno sam
padao preko
razvoju nogometnih talenata. Kao primjer navodi
Brazil: “Zašto Brazilci uvijek imaju bolju tehniku od
Europljana? Zato jer prije nogometne karijere igraju
futsal, a za futsal morate imati dobru tehniku. Time
još od malih nogu stvaraju svoju prednost.”
Jarni, danas 43-godišnjak, kao dječak je igrao
futsal, u svom rodnom gradu Čakovcu, prije nego je
započeo veliku nogometnu karijeru, u kojoj je igrao
i u polufinalu Svjetskog prvenstva 1998., kao i u
domaćini, no nakupili smo dobru količinu iskustva i
vjerujemo da imamo što pokazati na terenu.” S
STRAST i ponos
Passion and pride

The magic left foot; the 164cm stature; the stunning
goals and inspired assists; the dribbling skills you
thought only existed in video games. There are
many reasons to flag up Portugal’s Ricardo Filipe da
Silva Braga, alias Ricardinho, as futsal’s answer to
Leo Messi. The 26-year-old won futsal’s best player
award in 2010, the 2010 UEFA Futsal Cup and ten
domestic titles with SL Benfica. He also enjoyed
success abroad with Nagoya Oceans in Japan and in
Russia with PFC CSKA Moskva before returning to
Benfica in January. Here he lists his ingredients for
futsal success.
Desetka na leđima, čarobna ljevica, stas zbijen u
164cm, nevjerojatni golovi, nadahnute asistencije i
prozvan futsal verzijom Lea Messija. 26-godišnjak je
osvojio 10 domaćih naslova s SL Benficom, a 2010.
u Benficu. Evo njegovog recepta za postizanje
uspjeha u futsalu.
Ricardinhov ključ uspjeha
Fast feet, fast head
“The biggest quality a futsal player needs is
thinking fast – and executing fast. That makes the
difference. There are players who have bags of
technique and players who defend well. But if they
can’t think and execute quickly, they normally
won’t get the better of their opponents. That’s the
greatest quality.”
Brze noge, brza glava
“Odlika koja je igraču futsala najpotrebnija je
sposobnost brzog razmišljanja – i brzog provođenja
tih misli u djelo. To donosi prevagu.
obranu. No ako nisu u stanju brzo razmišljati i
djelovati, u pravilu neće moći nadmašiti svoje
suparnike. To je najveća kvaliteta u futsalu.“
Good legs, peak fitness
“The small pitch means fitness is underrated. But
futsal is all about sudden stopping, changes of
direction and explosive acceleration. You need to
work on getting a strong pair of legs and being in
good physical shape. You try to be better physically
than your opponent and have better skills. Then it’s
possible to gain an advantage.”
Jake noge, vrhunska sprema
“Tjelesna sprema je podcijenjena zbog malog
igrališta. No u futsalu su ključna brza zaustavljanja,
promjene smjera i eksplozivna ubrzanja. Potrebno je
raditi na jačanju nogu i dovođenju tijela u dobro
stanje. Trebate se potruditi da svog suparnika
nadjačate i tjelesno, isto kao i vještinama s loptom.
Tada je moguće ostvariti potrebnu prednost.“
Passing the exams
“There aren’t ‘water-carriers’ in futsal nowadays –
players who just deliver the ball to a team-mate.
More and more, the quality of your passing needs
to be high. In a match, you see more than 500
passes per team, so you need to be confident and
good over short and long distances. You always aim
for perfection.”
Dodana vrijednost
“U futsalu danas više nema ‘vodonoša’ – igrača koji
samo proslijeđuju lopte suigračima. Sve više i više do
izražaja dolazi potreba da dodavanja budu visoke
kvalitete.
Uvijek
trebate težiti savršenstvu.“
Attack and defence
“I remember someone telling Joel Queirós – one of
Portugal’s top players – that he’d be recognised as a
great striker but he wouldn’t make a mark as an
international if he didn’t defend. You need top
concentration, good positioning and the ability to
anticipate movements. You need to think like your
opponent – know where he’s going. In attack, it’s
more about improvisation. Scoring goals helps you
win, but there’s a team working behind the scorer
and sometimes that work isn’t valued enough.”
Napad i obrana
“Sjećam se da je netko rekao Joelu Queirósu, jednom
od najboljih portugalskih igrača, kako će uvijek biti
priznat kao veliki napadač, ali neće ostaviti traga na
međunarodnom planu ako ne bude igrao i obranu.
Trebate vrhunsku koncentraciju, dobro postavljanje i
sposobnost da predvidite idući potez. Morate
razmišljati kao svoj suparnik i znati kamo će krenuti.
U napadu je važnija improvizacija. Postizanje
ponekad taj rad nije dovoljno vrednovan.”
Tactical awareness
“Futsal is becoming more and more tactical. You
don’t see results like 10-2 any more. Teams have
improved tactically and differences are not so big.
Individual technique can make a difference but so
can tactical aspects and strategies in dead-ball
situations. As a percentage, I would rate the
importance of the tactical side at 60% and you
work on that in training.”
Taktička sprema
“Taktička strana sve više i više dolazi do izražaja u
futsalu. Više ne viđate rezultate 10-2 i slične.
Momčadi su se taktički poboljšale i razlike nisu toliko
velike.

Kike is one of only two players alongside goalkeeper
Amado to have featured in all four of Spain’s UEFA
Futsal EURO titles, and as the Roja target a record
fifth triumph, the 33-year-old says the motivation to
succeed is as great as ever.
Spain’s dominance of European football shows
no signs of abating and only Brazil are
considered serious rivals on the world stage.
What is Spain’s greatest strength?
Our confidence in each of us as individuals and
as a group. The team has understood for some
time that the group comes above everything else.
Our collective strength is enormous and when you
combine that with each player’s individual talent
it gives us every chance to win.
What does it mean to take part
in a UEFA Futsal EURO?
Everyone sees the EURO in a different light
and for me, at 33, it will be very different from
the 2001 tournament. I have a grounding in the
tournament and different experiences, but you
always hold the same high hopes and willingness
to give everything.
What was it like to lift the trophy
for a fourth time in 2010?
A feeling of pride. It signifies a job well done,
and done for your country. You have achieved
your objective, and alongside a group of people
you consider friends.
Does starting a tournament
as champions bring extra pressure?
There is always pressure when you are the team
to beat and the champions but they are pressures
Spain should be used to. You have to know how
to live with it because it is part of our daily lives.
Who are your biggest rivals for the title?
Russia always bring something to futsal. Portugal
have grown a lot over the years and have some
spectacular players. Then there are surprise
sides like Azerbaijan. It will be interesting
to see what Croatia, as hosts, will
do and what level Italy will be at.
The most important thing is for
us to impose our game on the rest.
You have won the FIFA Futsal
World Cup twice, and the
European title four times
in a stellar career.
What motivates you
most now?
Winning motivates
every sportsman.
it’s what we always
work towards. Victory
is so wonderful, you
always want to repeat
the feeling. We want
to continue making
history, continue to
be the global reference
point of our sport
and we want to be
European champions
again. We must
always aim for
the top.
futsalu. Sada, kada se popularni Rojasi spremaju za
osvajanje rekordne pete titule europskih prvaka,
svjetskoj razini. Koja je najveća
prednost Španjolske?
Naša vjera u nas same, kao pojedince i kao
momčad. Pojedincima je već duže
vrijeme jasno da je momčad
najvažnija. Naša je zajednička
snaga golema i kada tome
dodate talentiranost
pojedinih igrača,
imamo izvrsne izglede
za pobjedu.
Što za vas znači
sudjelovanje u
natjecanju UEFA-ina
Europskog prvenstva
futsalu?
Svatko na Europsko
prvenstvo gleda drukčije, pa
će i za mene, sada kada imam
33 godine, turnir biti mnogo
drukčiji od onog 2001. godine. Sada
sam dobro upoznat s turnirom i
skupio sam razna iskustva,
no i dalje je tu nada za
postizanje velikog uspjeha i
To znači
Bit
Svjetsko prvenstvo u futsalu osvojili ste dvaput,
a titulu prvaka Europe četiri puta u karijeri. Što
vas sada motivira?
Pobjeđivanje motivira svakog sportaša. To je ono
čemu stremimo. Pobjeđivanje je tako dobar osjećaj
da ga stalno želiš ponavljati. Mi i dalje želimo
ispisivati stranice povijesti i biti glavna referentna
točka futsala u svijetu, a želimo i ponovno postati
europski prvaci. Uvijek treba ciljati na vrh.

Spain’s dominance on the futsal court is matched
only by their compatriots in the eleven-a-side
game. Already world and European champions,
Spain added the UEFA European Under-21 and U19
Championship crowns to their collection in 2011 –
with the same slick, patient passing game that
the country’s futsal players espouse. As Spain
target a fourth successive Futsal EURO title, their
efforts will be closely followed by some star names
back home.
I love watching futsal
Volim gledati futsal
Xavi Hernández
“I love watching the sport and we will see what
Spain can do in the tournament,” FC Barcelona and
Spain midfielder Xavi Hernández said. “Sometimes
in regular football you cannot appreciate the talent
of the player, everything is more physical. But in
futsal you can really see the small details – quality,
class and tactics.” Kike himself added: “The style of
one-touch play, with the ball on the floor and quick
passing that generates a lot of possession, means
the two national teams are comparable. We enjoy
the football team’s success and even more so
because we can identify with their style of play.”
Španjolsku dominaciju u futsalu prati i dominacija
njihove “velike” reprezentacije. Već prvak svijeta i
Europe, Španjolska je među svoje nogometne
uspjehe 2011. godine dodala i pobjedu na
Europskom prvenstvu za mlađe od 21 godine (U-21)
te onom za mlađe od 19 godina (U-19). Nogometne
ekipe krasi ista tečna igra dodavanja koju rabe i
španjolski igrači futsala. Kako se Španjolska
priprema za osvajanje 4. uzastopne titule prvaka
ovog europskog natjecanja, njihova nastojanja
kod kuće će budno pratiti španjolske
nogometne zvijezde.
“Obožavam gledati mali nogomet i vidjet ćemo što
Španjolska može učiniti na turniru,” izjavio je vezni
igrač FC Barcelone i španjolski reprezentativac Xavi
Hernández. “Ponekad u “velikom” nogometu talent
taktiku.”
momčadi (futsala i “velikog” nogometa) svakako
prepoznati svoj stil igre.”

Road to Croatia
Put do Hrvatske
A competition record 43 nations entered the
2011/12 UEFA European Futsal Championship,
with 11 sides progressing from the qualifying
competition to join hosts Croatia in the final
tournament. Iceland, Norway, San Marino and
Switzerland were all competing for the first
time and kicked off in the preliminary round,
which Norway took by storm, scoring 19 times
in their three Group F games. In total, 24 teams
contested the preliminary round in January
2011 and the six section winners progressed to
the qualifying round the following month.
There they were joined by Europe’s 18
top-ranked sides, including all 12 UEFA Futsal
EURO 2010 finalists, who were given a bye. The
teams were split into six groups of four, and
the six section winners and five best runnersup advanced to the finals.
Rekordni broj od 43 reprezentacije nadao se
nastupu na finalnom turniru UEFA Futsal EURO
2012., a njih 11 pridružilo se domaćinima
Hrvatskoj nakon kvalifikacija. Island, Norveška,
San Marino i Švicarska natjecali su se prvi puta
u preliminarnim skupinama, gdje je Norveška
postigla čak 19 pogodaka u skupini F. Ukupno
24 ekipe borile su se na preliminarnim
natjecanjima u siječnju 2011., a šest pobjednika
preliminarnih skupina nastavilo je u
kvalifikacijsku skupinu sljedećeg mjeseca.
Tamo ih je dočekalo 18 najboljih europskih
reprezentacija, uključujući svih 12
reprezentacija iz finalnog turnira UEFA Futsal
EURO 2010. (koje su u kvalifikacije stigli bez
preliminarnih natjecanja). Kvalifikacije su bile
podijeljene u šest skupina od po četiri
reprezentacije, a šest pobjednika skupina i pet
najboljih drugoplasiranih ekipa plasiralo se na
završni turnir.

Italy was one of the first European countries to
embrace futsal as a competitive sport, so it was
fully appropriate that they were added to the roll of
honour as continental champions in 2003. Coached
by Alessandro Nuccorini during that era, Italy were
a tough, defensive outfit, but exciting talents such
as Vampeta and Gabriel Lima have joined 2003
veteran Luca Ippoliti since former assistant and
Under-21 coach Roberto Menichelli took over.
Menichelli certainly had a lot to live up
to when he grabbed the reins in 2009, with Italy
having not only been crowned on home soil in
2003 but also finishing runners-up four years later.
They had never failed to reach the semi-finals, in
fact, and graced the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Cup
showpiece, but a quarter-final exit beckoned at
UEFA Futsal EURO 2010 as Menichelli brought
through a new generation. Indeed, even ahead of
this year’s tournament, he has conceded that “we
are in a technical rebuilding phase, so we can’t
consider ourselves as favourites”. Italy and Group C
rivals Russia, the only two teams to have won the
competition other than Spain, have met six times
before in the finals, with Italy winning three and
losing two and one drawn.
Qualifying results and tables, pages 45-47
osvajanje Europskog prvenstva 2003. bilo itekako
prikladno.
Menichelli, sjajni mladi talenti poput Vampete i
Gabriela Lime pridružili su se veteranima Luciju
Ippolitiju. Menichelli je 2009. godine naslijedio
visoko kvalitetnu Italiju, domaćine i osvajače
natjecanja 2003. i finaliste četiri godine kasnije.
Italija nikada nije ispala prije polufinala.
natjecanja. U finalnom turniru susreli su se šest
puta. Triput je slavila Italija, dvaput Rusija, a
jednom je rezultat bio neriješen.

COACH
IZBORNIK
Sergei Skorovich 05/04/1973
Former football defender Skorovich switched
to futsal with MFK Sinara Ekaterinburg in 1995,
becoming first-team coach a decade later. He
won the 2007 Russian Cup and the UEFA Futsal
Cup the following season, before adding two
Russian titles. From 2009, he combined his
club role with coaching Russia, before taking
on the national team job full time in January.
Bivši nogometni branič, Skorovič je na futsal
prešao 1995. godine, nastupajući za MFK Sinara
Ekaterinburg. Njihov trener postao je deset
godina kasnije. Osvojio je Kup Rusije 2007., UEFA
Futsal kup sljedeće sezone i nakon toga još dvije
titule prvaka Rusije. Od 2009. je uz rad u klubu
trenirao i rusku reprezentaciju, dok se u siječnju u
potpunosti posvetio nacionalnoj momčadi.

Mini-football was played in the Soviet Union from
the 1950s onwards, with futsal rules adopted in
1990. Russia have been a world force ever since,
winning 1996 FIFA Futsal World Cup bronze and the
first official UEFA European Futsal Championship
three years later, inspired by the prolific Konstantin
Eremenko, who died in 2010. They have become
fixtures in the latter stages of major competitions
thanks to a patient and athletic counterattacking
game based around players from former European
champion clubs MFK Dinamo Moskva – including
Brazilian-born Cirilo and Pula – and MFK Sinara
Ekaterinburg, who boast Dmitri Prudnikov,
goalkeeper Sergei Zuev and, up to the end of 2011,
coach Sergei Skorovich.
Having lost out on penalties to eventual winners
Spain in the quarter-finals last time out, Skorovich has
his sights set on glory and will take inspiration from
leading Ekaterinburg to 2007/08 UEFA Futsal Cup
success. “The feeling you get when you claim such
a trophy is comparable to a birth of a child,” he said.
Group C rivals Italy beat Russia when these two sides
last met in the semi-finals in 2007 and Skorovich
expects a better outcome this time round. “A strong
team like ours should always aim for the highest
targets, which means at least reaching the final.”
Qualifying results and tables, pages 45-47

i prvom službenom Europskom prvenstvu tri
godine poslije, pod vodstvom velikog Konstantina
Eremenka, koji je preminuo 2010. Zahvaljujući svojoj
strpljivoj i aktivnoj igri protunapada Rusija je stalni
sudionik finalnih natjecanja. Igrači uglavnom igraju
za europske prvake MFK Dinamo Moskvu (Cirilo i
Pula) i MFK Sinara Ekaterinburg (Dmitrij Prudnikov,
Sergej Zuev i izbornik Sergej Skorovič).

COACH
IZBORNIK
Ömer Kaner 21/05/1951
Making his name as a football forward,
Kaner finished leading scorer in Turkey’s
top flight in 1974/75 and was capped once
by his country. He trained as a coach in
Germany and England and led Denizlispor
to promotion before taking charge of the
newly formed Turkish futsal team in 2006.
Kao nogometni napadač, Kaner je
bio najbolji golgeter turske prve lige
u sezoni 1974./75. Za trenera se
obučavao u Njemačkoj i Engleskoj.
Vodio je klub Denizlispor prije
preuzimanja novoosnovane turske
reprezentacije u futsalu 2006. godine.

They may only have played their first international
in December 2006 – losing 7-3 in Romania – but
Turkey have reached the UEFA European Futsal
Championship finals at the third attempt, and
as the only survivors from the preliminary round.
They also got past that stage in 2007, winning their
competitive debut 6-3 against Albania after losing
their first six friendlies, but disappointment then
awaited in the qualifying round. This time, they
beat UEFA Futsal EURO 2010 participants Hungary
and Belgium to go all the way, qualifying as one
of the best runners-up.
Coach Ömer Kaner is now hoping to spring another
upset or two, with a side featuring several players
from Belgian and Dutch clubs – including Cihan
Özcan, Kenan Köseoğlu, Aziz Sağlam and Hüseyin
Yıldız – as the Turkish league was only set up in
2009. He can also call upon 35-year-old midfielder
Altan Aksoy, once of Galatasaray AŞ, whose
technique has proved a boon. Kaner said: “I think
it’s a real success that we’re here and it’ll be a
good experience for us. It’s a very nice family, the
futsal family. But our group is very, very difficult,
because two of the best teams are in it with us.”
Qualifying results and tables, pages 45-47
preliminarnih turnira. Tu su razinu prošli i 2007.,
pobijedivši Albaniju 6:3 nakon poraza u prvih
šest prijateljskih utakmica, no u ispali su u
kvalifikacijama.
i Nizozemske (Cihan Özcan, Kenan Köseoğlu,
s nama dvije najboljie ekipe u Europi.”

COACH
IZBORNIK
Jorge Braz 25/05/1972
Canadian-born Braz was handed the
difficult job of replacing the charismatic and
long-serving Orlando Duarte in July 2010,
but the former Universidade do Minho and
GD Fundação Jorge Antunes coach had a
head start, having been an assistant since
July 2006. Early results have been promising.
Rođen u Kanadi, Braz je imao težak
zadatak zamijeniti omiljenog Orlanda
Duartea u srpnju 2010., no pomoglo mu
je što je prije preuzimanja reprezentacije
već bio Duarteov pomoćnik od 2006.

Portugal made a breakthrough by reaching the
UEFA Futsal EURO 2010 final and are now aiming
to go one better under new coach Jorge Braz.
Braz stepped up in summer 2010 after the man he
assisted, Orlando Duarte, returned to club coaching
following a decade in charge. Portugal had to wait
until the continental showcase in 1999 to grace
their first final tournament, but under Duarte
they became regulars on the European and global
stage, taking 2000 FIFA Futsal World Cup bronze
in Guatemala.
Hopes will again be pinned on the all-action
Ricardinho, who missed the 2010 finals through
injury but helped his side reach the last four on
home soil in 2007. Ricardinho’s fellow key men are
pivots Joel Queirós, Cardinal and Gonçalo and all
proved crucial as they steered Portugal to their
maiden final last time out, losing 4-2 to Spain.
“When I came to the national team under Orlando,
the first comment was, ‘This looks more like a club
than a national team,’ because there was a strong
collective identity,” Braz said. “Harnessing the
potential of that ends up being easy.” Braz has
plenty of talent to work with, underlined by
SL Benfica’s 2010 UEFA Futsal Cup win.
Qualifying results and tables, pages 45-47
Portugal je na Europskom prvenstvu 2010. stigao
do finala, a pod novim izbornikom Jorgeom Brazom
žele se popeti na najvišu stepenicu. Braz je postao
izbornikom 2010., nakon što se Orlando Duarte
vratio klupskom futsalu.
Ricardinha bit će Joel Queirós, Cardinal i Gonçalo,
takvog potencijala.” Braz može birati između
mnogih talentiranih igrača, tim više što je
portugalska SL Benfica osvajač UEFA Futsal
kupa 2010.

COACH
IZBORNIK
Aca Kovačević 27/8/1955
Kovačević was the greatest futsal player
in the history of the former Yugoslavia,
captaining the national team for eight years.
The coach, who now runs a private futsal
school in Belgrade, revived the Serbia side
in late 2006 and has guided them to three
straight futsal EURO final tournaments.
Kovačević je bio najbolji igrač futsala bivše
Jugoslavije i kapetan reprezentacije osam
godina. Sada vodi privatnu školu malog
nogometa u Beogradu. Preporodio je
srbijansku reprezentaciju kada ju je preuzeo
2006. godine, odvevši je do tri uzastopna
finalna europska turnira.

European final tournaments. Despite the absence of
the influential Marko Perić at these finals, fellow
stalwart Bojan Pavićević remains central to Serbia’s
plans and now has an exciting new generation
alongside him, including Mladen Kocić and Marko
Pršić. Yugoslavia were one of the first countries to
embrace futsal in 1987 but having made the first
European Championship 12 years later, they faded
from view until Kovačević took over the new Serbia
team in late 2006.
They qualified for EURO 2007, where they drew with
Spain and beat Ukraine. In 2010 they made it again,
topping their group ahead of previous nemesis
Russia before a quarter-final exit to Portugal.
Kovačević believes his side’s main quality is
“unpredictability”. He adds: “They are all great
players mentally and they play best against the best
teams. We showed that in the last two European
Championships where we played our best matches
against the best teams in Europe and the world
– and caused several surprises.”

Uprkos odsustvu utjecajnog
Marka Perića na ovim finalima, pouzdani Bojan
Pavićević ostaje centralni igrač u timu Srbije koga će
podržavati igrači mlade generacije, uključujući
Mladena Kocića i Marka Pršića. Sada on i Bojan
Pavićević uza sebe imaju novu generaciju igrača,
među kojima Mladena Kocića i Marka Pršića.
futsal, 1987. godine, no nakon sudjelovanjana prvom
Europskom prvenstvu u futsalu 12 godina poslije,
(ispred velikih rivala Rusije), prije poraza
od Portugala u četvrtfinalu. Kovačević vjeruje da je
veliki adut njegove reprezentacije “nepredvidivost”.
Tomu dodaje: “Svi naši igrači mentalno su jaki i
najbolje igraju protiv najboljih. To smo pokazali na
zadnja dva Europska prvenstva, gdje smo najbolje
utakmice odigrali protiv najboljih europskih
reprezentacija i iznenadili neke od njih.”

COACH
IZBORNIK
Alesio 27/09/1968
José Alesio da Silva was a successful
player in his native Brazil, Spain and
Russia, where he began as a coach. More
recently, he led Kairat Almaty to the
UEFA Futsal Cup finals and repeated the
feat with Araz Naxçivan, whom he took
over at the same time as Azerbaijan.
José Alesio da Silva bio je uspješan
nogometni igrač u Brazilu, Španjolskoj i
Rusiji, gdje je i počeo s karijerom trenera.
S dva kluba (Kairat Almaty i Araz
Naxçivan) kao trener je dospio do finala
UEFA Futsal kupa, a zatim je sjeo i na
izborničku klupu reprezentacije.

Azerbaijan’s run to the UEFA Futsal EURO 2010
semi-finals was one of the highlights of the
competition. They had never appeared in a major
tournament before and their charismatic style
captured the imagination of the fans in Hungary,
even though they were partly responsible for
eliminating the hosts in the group stage. They had
been steadily improving over the years, exiting
qualifying unbeaten three years earlier and
impressing during the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup
preliminaries.
But it was the appointment of experienced Brazilian
coach Alesio and his blending of South Americanborn talents including Biro Jade, Thiago, Felipe and
the larger-than-life Serjão with local favourite
Vitaliy Borisov and evergreen goalkeeper Andrey
Tveryankin that transformed Azerbaijan into a
top-class outfit. In the 2010 finals, they beat
Hungary and the Czech Republic in their group and
ousted Ukraine on penalties in the last eight before
Portugal ended their hopes in a shoot-out, and their
run was characterised by some innovative tactics,
notably the early use of flying goalkeepers.
“Azerbaijan can repeat the result of 2010,” said
Tveryankin.

Prodor Azerbajdžana do polufinala na UEFA Futsal EURO
2010. bio je jedna od najsvjetlijih točaka natjecanja. Nikad
Svjetskog prvenstva u futsalu 2008.
Mnogi su bili impresionirani njihovom igrom. Ipak,
transformacija u vrhunsku ekipu uslijedila je nakon
imenovanja iskusnog brazilskog trenera Alesija za
izbornika reprezentacije. On je igrače rođene u Južnoj
Americi, poput Biro Jadea, Thiaga, Felipea i
neprikosnovenog Serjãoa, kombinirao s lokalnim
miljenicima, npr. Borisovom i Tverjankinom, i time je
dobio iznimnu ekipu. Na finalnom natjecanju 2010.
pobijedili su Mađarsku i Češku u svojoj skupini i
Ukrajinu u četvrtfinalu, a u polufinalu ih je Portugal
pobijedio teškom mukom (nakon izvođenja kaznenih
udaraca). Igru Azerbajdžana krasila je inovativna taktika,
npr. rano korištenje igrača-vratara. “Azerbajdžana
može ponoviti rezultat iz 2010.,” uvjeren je Tverjankin.

COmpetition history
Povijest natjecanja
Is it a coincidence that Spain, world and European
champions in the outdoor game, have been a
dominant force in futsal? The players may be
different, but the emphasis on possession,
high-speed passing and exquisite control in tight
spaces is absolutely familiar. Spain set a benchmark
by beating Russia 5-3 in the final of UEFA’s pilot
European tournament in Cordoba in 1996, and they
have graced five of the six showpiece matches
since the UEFA European Futsal Championship was
launched in 1999, winning four of them. Players
such as goalkeeper Luis Amado, the Linares
Rodríguez brothers – Joan and Andreu – and the
captain of the 2010 champions, Javi Rodríguez,
have joined the likes of Russia’s late, lamented
Konstantin Eremenko and Croatia’s Mićo Martić on
the list of legends who have left indelible marks on
the history of the competition. Under former coach
Javier Lozano and now José Venancio López, Spain
have stuck to a clearly defined playing philosophy,
despite determined attempts by Russia, Ukraine
and Italy to knock them off their perch. The
presence of Iberian rivals Portugal in the 2010
showpiece posted a warning that other nations are
ready to challenge their standing too, and the
seventh final tournament – the second to involve 12
teams – will feature Turkey on the continent’s
biggest futsal stage for the first time.
zadržavanju lopte u posjedu, brzom dodavanju i
vještom kontroliranju lopte na malom prostoru ista
je u oba slučaja. Španjolska je ljestvicu postavila
već 1996. godine u probnom izdanju Europskog
prvenstva u Cordobi, kada je u finalu svladala Rusiju
sa 5:3. Od 1999. godine, od kada se Europsko
prvenstvo i službeno igra, Španjolci su igrali u pet
od šest finala, te osvojili četiri titule. Igrači, kao što
su vratar Luis Amado, braća Linares – Joan i Andreu
te kapetan pobjedničke momčadi iz 2010., Javi
Rodríguez, pridružili su se velikom (sada
preminulom) Rusu, Konstantinu Eremenku i Hrvatu
neizbrisivi trag u ovom natjecanju. Pod bivšim
(Javier Lozano) i sadašnjim (José Venancio López)
visoke plasmane. Tako će se na ovom sedmom
turniru (drugom s 12 reprezentacija) prvi puta na
ovoj razini predstaviti Turska.

RUSSIA
Hosts Spain
came back from 2-1
and 3-2 down to force
extra time, but after a 3-3
draw, Russia’s hero was
goalkeeper Oleg Denissov,
who saved two penalties
to win his side the
shoot-out 4-2.
Domaćin Španjolska
poravnavala je rezultat s 1:2
i 2:3 te izborila produžetke, no
nakon 3:3 u produžecima, heroj
izvođenja kaznenih udaraca bio je
vratar Rusije Oleg Denisov koji je
obranio 2 udarca za konačan
ishod 4:2 u korist Rusije.

SPAIN
Having
avenged their 1999

goal won them their
first title 2-1.
Spain looked

the final.

Nakon osvete
protiv Rusije u
polufinalu za poraz iz 1999.,
Španjolska je i ovoga puta u
finalu protiv Ukrajine morala stizati
gol” i priskrbio Španjolskoj prvo
osvajanje turnira (2:1).
U polufinalu se
činilo da je za Španjolce
utakmica izgubljena, kada
su 5 minuta i 49 sekundi prije
kraja utakmice gubili 0:2 od
domaćina Portugala, nakon velike
borbe izborili su finale i to nakon
izvođenja kaznenih udaraca.

Španjolci ovoga su se

Pobjeda od 2:1 (golove za

Pedro Galán Nieto has refereed at two FIFA Futsal
World Cups and served at every European futsal
showcase since the pilot tournament in 1996 – five
times as an active referee and, at the last two UEFA
European Futsal Championships, as a UEFA observer.
The Spaniard is completing his hat-trick by helping
supervise refereeing in Croatia, so who better to
run us through the basics of futsal from the
referees’ point of view?
How long does each game last?
“Each half lasts 20 minutes, with the clock stopped
when the ball is out of play. Each team can call
one 60-second time-out per half. Extra time
consists of two five-minute periods followed, if
needed, by a penalty shoot-out. There is no extra
time in the third-place play-off.”
Koliko traju utakmice?
”Poluvremena traju po 20 minuta, a vrijeme se
zaustavlja kad je lopta izvan igre. Svaka momčad
može pozvati jedan time-out po poluvremenu, u
pucaju kazneni udarci. U doigravanju za treće
mjesto nema produžetaka.”
Substitutions
“There’s no limit. But the match officials have to
make sure that the subs don’t enter the pitch before
the replaced player goes off – and that they enter
and leave via the substitution zone which runs for
five metres along the sideline, starting five metres
away from the halfway line.”
Zamjene
“Broj zamjena nije ograničen. Suci moraju paziti da
zamjene ne uđu na teren prije nego što s njega izađu
zamijenjeni igrači, te da se ulazi i izlazi u zoni za
zamjene, koja je pet metara duga (uz rub igrališta) i
počinje pet metara od linije koja označava
polovinu igrališta.”

RULES OF THE GAME
Pravila igre
The referees
“Sixteen have been selected. All of them were at a
course in Prague in December, when fitness was
assessed and guidelines were issued with a view to
achieving maximum consistency. Four are chosen
for every match: two as referees, one as the third
official and the other one as the timekeeper.”
The timekeeper
“Concentration is the key because the clock has to
be stopped and started when the game stops and
restarts, to make sure that exactly 20 minutes of
real time are played in each half – or five in extra
time. The referees are also timekeepers in a way,
because at set plays or when the keeper has the
ball, they raise an arm and count down with their
fingers the four seconds the player has to get the
ball into play.”
The ball
“Match officials have to check that the
circumference is 62-64cm; that the weight is
400-440g; and that the bounce when
dropped from 2m is between 50 and
65cm. At EURO, there will be eight
balls per game; one in each
corner and four with the
third official.”
The flying goalkeeper
“An outfield player can come
on and off as a substitute for
the goalkeeper. But the ref has
to make sure that the ‘flying
goalkeeper’ is wearing a keeper’s
jersey with his number – and that all the
team’s keepers wear the same colours.”
Free-kicks
“Fouls are counted during each half and, from the
sixth foul onwards, each gives the opposition a free
strike at goal from the second penalty mark – ten
metres out. If there’s extra time, fouls from the
second half are carried into the extra ten minutes.”
Suci
“Odabrano je šesnaest sudaca. Svi su u prosincu prošli
obuku u Pragu.
dižu ruku i prstima odbrojavaju četiri sekunde unutar
kojih igrač mora vratiti loptu u igru.”
Lopta
“Službene osobe moraju osigurati da je površina
62-64 cm; da je težina 400-440g; i da lopta odskače
između 50 i 65 cm kada je bačena sa visine
od 2 m. Na Europskom će se prvenstvu
koristiti osam lopti na svakoj utakmici
- po jedna u svakom kutu igrališta i
četiri kod trećeg suca.”
Igrač-vratar
“Jedan od vanjskih igrača može
mijenjati vratara. Sudac mora
paziti da “igrač-vratar” nosi majicu
vratara s vratarevim brojem te da svi
vratari jedne ekipe nose majice
iste boje.”
Slobodni udarci
“Prekršaji se zbrajaju za svako poluvrijeme. Od šestog
prekršaja nadalje, ekipa koja je počinila prekršaj time
protivnicima dodjeljuje nebranjeni udarac na gol s
točke drugog kaznenog udarca (deset metara od
gola). Ako se igraju produžeci, prekršaji iz drugog
poluvremena se prebacuju i na produžetke, tj.
dodatnih 10 minuta.”

A red card means the penalised team plays for two minutes with
four players

Red cards
“A red card means the team plays for two minutes
with four players. If the opposition scores, a fifth
player can be brought back on, but if the team with
four players scores, the numbers don’t change. I
hope we don’t see any red cards in Croatia!”
Crveni kartoni
“Crveni karton znači da ekipa koja ga je dobila dvije
minute igra s ukupno četiri igrača. Ako protivnici
postignu pogodak, peti igrač se vraća, no ako ekipa s
četiri igrača postigne pogodak i dalje ostaje s četiri
igrača (do isteka crvenog kartona). Nadam se da u
Hrvatskoj neće biti crvenih kartona!”
