Therefore, I will begin by reminding us of these questions: What is our purpose as a Parish? What is the ultimate GOAL of all these efforts that we have undertaken? Why are we making such great investments of Time, Talent and Treasure? The answer is: Because we have a great Commission from the Lord for us after His Resurrection “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded to you; and I am with you always, to the close of the age. My desire is to protect the parish from anything that will turn us away from the Ultimate Goal. My duty is to protect it when I see anything that is dangerous to its unity and peace, or even to its fiscal stability and future growth. I see myself as the glue that holds the parish together. For the last three years, I have been serving you in this spirit and I intend to continue to serve you in the same way for a long time, as God gives me strength. Γιορτάζοντας την εκατονταετηρίδα της Εκκλησίας μας το 2016 και τιμώντας την κληρονομιά μας, η κοινότητα μας τίμησε τον Ορέστη Τ Δημητριάδη το Σάββατο 15 Νοέμβρη. Αυτός είναι μία πολύ γνωστή και σημαντική προσωπικότητα της ραδιοφωνιας που έχει υπηρετήσει την Ελληνική Κοινότητα μέσω των ραδιοφωνικών προγραμμάτων του από το 1952. Η εκδήλωση ήταν υπέροχη, καλά οργανωμένη, και οικονομικά πολύ επιτυχημένη. Το φαγητό ήταν εξαιρετικό. Το τιμώμενο πρόσωπο και κάθε επισκέπτης είχε μια καταπληκτική βραδιά. Instead of serving Me, you in‐ dulged serving your own passions. But what was it about Me that made you avoid me? Why is it that you do not want to come to Me? Do you pursue that which is good for you? Whatever is good in life I possess. Do you seek a blessed life, I offer it to you. Do you seek that which is beautiful? What is more beautiful than Me? Do you seek kindness? Who is more compassionate than the Son of God and the Virgin Mary? Do you seek that which is the most blessed thing in life? What is more blessed than the Kingdom of Heaven? Do you desire glory in life? Who is more glorious than Me in the world? Do you seek after riches? All the most profound riches in life are found in Me. Do you seek to acquire wisdom? I am the Wisdom of God. Do you seek a faithful friend in life? Who could possibly be friendlier than Me who gave His life for the sake of all of you? Are you looking for help in life? Who else in the world can help you like I can? Υou seek healing from a doctor? Who else can heal you like I can? Are you looking for joy in life? Who else can give you the joy the way I can? Koinotis Recipe Corner ΣΥΝΤΑΓΗ ΣΑΛΑΤΑ ΚΟΥΝΟΥΠΙΔΙ ΜΕ ΡΟΚΑ CAULIFLOWER ARUGULA SALAD 1 Head Cauliflower cut into florets 4 bunches baby arugula 4 χούφτες ρόκα 1 κεφάλι κουνουπίδι πλυμμένο και κομμένο σε τούφες 2 tablespoons lemon juice (about 2 lemons) 2 κουτ. σούπας χυμός λεμονιού 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 4 κουτ. σούπας λάδι ¼ cup golden raisins ¼ cup pine nuts toasted 1/8 tsp crushed red chili pepper flakes Shaved Parmesan Cheese (can be served without parmesan during lent) Salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste ¼ φλυτζ. σταφίδες άσπρες ¼ φλυτζ. κουκουνάρια καβουρδισμένα 1/8 κουτ. red pepper flakes (μπούκοβα) Αλάτι και πιπέρι Ξέσματα παρμεζάνας (προαιρετικό) Αλοίφω το κουνουπίδι με λάδι, αλάτι και πιπέρι και το ψήνω σε λαδωμένο ταψί γιά Preheat Oven to 400 degrees F. 30’ περίπου ή μέχρι να ροδήσει. As we enter the holiday season, we reflect and we honor the legacy of our immediate families, our Church families, and our friends, all the people we are thankful for who make our lives richer in value. This was the premise behind the 100th Anniversary Committee’s Tribute to Orestes Demetriades – an evening for Somerville parishioners and friends to say thank you for decades of broadcasting our ethnic heritage was held on Saturday, November 15. Soon after Christmas, on January 31, we are hosting an evening with Greek artist Katerina Delegas. Learn how to draw and bring home your own finished painting at the end of the night. See flyer included. So much has been accomplished these first two years – 2013 and 2014. Meetings are held at least once a month, our mission statement has been completed, a Treasurer was appointed, the theme “Honoring Our Legacy” established, Logo decided, 2 Plant Sales held, the Axion Estin weekend hosted, the Tribute to Orestes Demetriades event realized, a photographer has stepped forward to record our history, a collection of parishioner’s wedding pictures for an al‐ bum is in place, and much work and research for the 100th Anniversary Album has begun. As the year 2014 comes to a close the last planned event for 2016 will be finalized. ALL of our goals have been met. So what do we need? You. In the mean time, the lessons of traditional Greek dances and the children’s choir are a huge hit with the students. They cannot wait for it to be time to have the dance lessons and to practice singing. By adding the dance lessons and the children’s choir to our curriculum this year, was the best decision we made. As our school is steadily growing, we must look to its future. The number of students must also grow with the school, and that falls solely on us. Who ever loves this church, must also talk lovingly about the school to others. These students are the future of this church let’s not forget that. The PTO welcomed all new families to our Parish in September during our cookout for all new and returning students. All the families enjoyed a tasty BBQ lunch which was prepared by Jason Schrieber, John Stefanou and Michael Ververis. Fortunately we continue to grow each year which is a testament to all the love and good deeds we are performing as a par‐ ish. The future is getting brighter. The Greek School students performed with poems, songs and dances, while the audience was admiring their all their talents. “OXI DAY” Celebration Sunday, October 26, 2014 Meaning Behind “OXI DAY” October 28th 1940: Greece rejects Mussolini’s ultimatum On this day in 1940 during World War Two, the Greek government rejected Italian dictator Benito Mussolini’s demand that the Greeks allow the Italian army to enter and occupy the country. At 3 a.m. the Italian ambassador to Greece, Emanuele Grazzi, delivered Mussolini’s ultimatum to Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas. The Prime Minister replied with"Alors, c’est la guerre" (“Then, it is war”). The people of Greece celebrated Metaxas’s defiant “Oxi” (Greek for ‘no’) and resisted when the Ital‐ ian army crossed the Greek border. This is such a festive time of year. First we give thanks and then we celebrate Christ’ birth. We are all familiar with the usual seasonal music at this time of year, hymns of Thanksgiv‐ ing, hymns of preparation for Christmas and then the Christmas hymns themselves. Music began in the Church. This means we sing some of the oldest music in the world during our Liturgy. Throughout every period of music, musicians have composed great symphonic and choral works for this period of time, especially Christmas. We have early music from the Renaissance period (14th to 17th centuries), then the Ba‐ roque period (17th and 18th centu‐ ries), on to the Classical era (from about 1730‐1820), then comes the Romantic period (from around 1815‐1910), and ultimately to the current time we live in. So from the Renaissance period to the current is over 700 years of music! And each musical era has its own particular identity in manner of composition and performance practices. Add to that the music that started in the Church and we can go all the way back to some‐ time before the year 100. So there is basically a truckload of music written to celebrate the upcoming season, both liturgical and secular. Some of the most fa‐ mous and most‐performed music at this time of year comes from Johann Sebastian Bach (German Baroque), who is known for com‐ posing a Cantata (composition usually for a choir with instrumen‐ tal accompaniment) for every Sunday of the year. This isn’t necessarily because he wanted to become famous but more so out of necessity for his choir. They just needed something to sing each week. It was great to see many generations of Greek heritage, working together and sharing their knowledge with our younger parish‐ ioners. The delicious smell of our Greek homemade food, loukoumades and other irresistible pastries, attracted many repeat visitors to our event. It was also great to see, people enjoying live Greek music and attempting to dance like the Lykeion Greek dancers, who were outstanding. In short, it was great to see people enjoying themselves and having a great time. Despite the heavy torrential downpours we experienced in the afternoon, Saturday, 6 September 2014, our festival guests and our festival volunteers were not deterred by it and literally found shelter in our church. When the rain, lightning and wind stopped, very few people went home and most stayed and continued to enjoy the numerous festivities. Our festival volunteers went back to work, which exemplified their dedication to hard work, their lack of fear and of course their belief and dedication to our church and God. Like “agria louloudia” (Greek for wild flowers) they survived the bad weather and hurdled many unexpected festivals chal‐ lenges that pop‐up and like the wildflower they are still proudly standing. This year’s festival has ended but I still run into various people who attended our festival and continue to praise it. This is no co‐ incidence, for years we have consistently grown and have maintained high festival standards that are second to none. This “pathos”, success and teamwork needs to be replicated and implemented with everything we do for our church. On behalf of the other festival chair, Diane Karavitis we want to thank each and every one of you for making this year’s festival a special event that thousands of people support and look forward to every year. By the way, next year’s Music and Food Festival will be Sep‐ tember 11, 12 and 13 2015! Thanks to everyone, and onward to next year’s festival! Andy Galbadis 2014 Festival Co‐Chair Ήταν σπουδαίο να δεί κανείς γενιές ελληνικής κληρονομίας, να εργάζονται μαζί, και να μοιράζονται γνώσεις με τους νεώτερους ενορίτες. Οι μυρουδιές ελληνικών φαγητών, λουκουμάδων, κ.τ.λ., έφεραν πολλούς επισκέπτες στην εκδήλωσή μας. Ήταν όμορφο, επίσης, να διασκεδάζουν τόσοι με ελληνική μουσική, και να απολαμβάνουν τους χορούς του Λύκειου Ελληνίδων, που ήταν καταπληκτικοί. Στην δυνατή νεροποντή κατά το απόγευμα του Σαββάτου, στις 6 Σεπτεμβρίου, 2014, στο φεστιβάλ μας, επισκέπτες κι εθελοντές, βρήκαν καταφύγιο στην εκκλησία. Μετά το πέρας της βροχής, των αστραπών και του δυνατού αγέρα, όλοι σχεδόν οι επισκέπτες, συνέχισαν την διασκέδαση τους, οι δε εθελοντές, ξαναγύρισαν στις υποχρεώσεις τους. Σαν τα αγριολούλουδα, στην κακοκαιρία. Κάθε χρόνο, το φεστιβάλ είναι όλο και πιό καλό, εξ αιτίας του «πάθους» που διακατέχει όλους όσους εργάζοναι εκεί. We start out the month of November by offering the Coffee Hour on Sunday, November 2, 2014, for the Sunday of Cos‐ mas and Damianos. Once again, we will be celebrating on November 25, 2014, Saint Catherine’s Feast Day, who is the patron saint of our Society. We culminate the year with our Christmas Luncheon, to be held on December 7th. We will keep you posted as we organize more events. Thanksgiving is a time that we give thanks for all we have in our life. It’s also a time to give to the less fortu‐ nate. How about a nice home cooked meal for the less fortunate? Don’t forget that we cook for the Homeless Shelter once a month, so come and join us. Please contact any Philoptochos Board Member, if you are willing to help in any possible way, whether it is to volunteer your time cooking for the less fortu‐ nate or making a donation.
