President’s Trip to Crete...
My fellow Cretans,
I have recently returned from my first trip to Crete as president
of our great organization. My family and I were there for several
weeks and had the opportunity to meet with several religious
leaders and dignitaries from the island. We had prearranged a few
meetings, but once we arrived there, we were bombarded with
requests to meet with mayors, presidents of organizations and
several others. We tried to meet with as many as possible.
We began our visits with a blessing and a rare honor of a Doxologia for our organization at St. Mina in Heraklio by His Eminence
Archbishop of Crete Irineos. He prepared for us a full program,
which was followed by a presentation from the local cultural youth
club, their dance and singing groups, and lyra and laouto players.
This was followed by a Trisagion and a “kerasma.” His Eminence
expressed his heartfelt blessings and well wishes for our organization and its new board.
Later that day we met with regional director of Crete, Mr. Stavros Arnaoutakis, at the old prefecture building. We were greeted
at their headquarters by the regional director, 3 vice regional
directors, and members of the press and media. I relayed to Mr.
Arnaoutakis our concerns for the island and for Greece in these
difficult economic times that our motherland is currently experiencing. I suggested a few ideas that we could work on together to
promote Crete as the ideal spot for tourism in the Mediterranean
and to promote its products and its people through our magazine,
website and contacts here in the states.
The annual meeting of the World Council of Cretans took place
Saturday, August 6, at the Cultural House at Rethymno. All of the
Federations were there with their representatives this year to
elect a new president. The Australians were voted in with Antonis
Tsourdalakis as the new president. I met with Mr. Tsourdalakis and
discussed in length several ideas and thoughts of how our organizations may be able to work together to support the WCC.
We received an invitation and had several PAA board members
and members join us for a private tour of the Venizelos Museum
and home in Halepa. It is truly a wonder to see the progress made
on the home and museum in honor of the ethnarch and great
Cretan Eleftherio Venizelo. They are in the process of digitizing and
archiving the thousands of books and memorabilia in their collection and suggested we add a link on our website.
We were also invited to and visited the Crete University Press
at the University of Crete in Heraklio, which began through funding
of the PAA through the PEF many years ago. We also visited the
new Museum of Natural History and the aquarium, both in Her-

aklio, and that same evening the observatory in Anogia at the top
of the mountain next to Psiloriti! Each was a wonder in itself. The
aquarium is one that I would compare to the one here in Chicago
and is the second most visited attraction in Crete after Knossos.
The observatory works with the University of Cal Tech and had a
Cretan American from Berkeley University working there.
We attended the Annual meeting of the PEF in Crete. The committee meets annually with the dean of the University of Crete and
the directors of the various colleges to present the donations allotted annually for each of the projects which the committee votes to
support. In attendance was also the new dean-elect who was very
pleased to meet us and thanked the PAA for its years of support
and contributions. Each of the directors made a presentation on
their progress over the past year and their plans for the future.
The local committee for PAA-MVI met to discuss the progress
of the project and the status of timeshare sales. It was beneficial
for both sides to hear about the sales of the units as well as the
forward moving progress of the project, as it promises to be a large
boost for Crete and Greece in these difficult economic times.
Everywhere we went and everyone we met all held the
Pancretan Association of America with the highest regard and respect! They recognize our organization as the strongest of all of the
federations, the one that has done the most and has helped our
motherland the most over the years. For this we have to thank our
predecessors and acknowledge all of their work over the years for
the funding and support of projects, people and events in Crete.
I, for one, feel a great need to maintain our ties, our support
and our love for this island and its people, as it is the reason we do
what we do and the reason our organization exists! It represents
our culture and our history and what we must pass on to our
youth.
I would like to thank all of the board members, PYA and PAA
members, along with our friends and my family for attending these
events with me. It truly represented our strength and support for
our great organization. I was very proud to be in the company of
these great people representing our organization and I thank you
for that.
Now, it’s time to get back to work here in the States, to schedule and coordinate our upcoming board meetings, and to work on
our projects and goals for the upcoming two years.

Aναφορά Ταξιδιού του Προέδρου στη Κρήτη...
Αγαπητοί φίλοι,
Πρόσφατα επέστρεψα από το πρώτο μου ταξίδι
στην Κρήτη ως Πρόεδρος της μεγάλης οργάνωσής μας.
Η οικογένειά μου και εγώ ήμασταν εκεί για αρκετές
εβδομάδες και είχαμε την ευκαιρία να συναντηθούμε με
διάφορους θρησκευτικούς ηγέτες και αξιωματούχους από
το νησί. Είχαμε προγραμματισμένες αρκετές συναντήσεις,
αλλά μόλις φτάσαμε εκεί, μας βομβάρδιζαν συνεχώς με
αιτήσεις για να συναντηθούμε με Δημάρχους, Προέδρους
οργανισμών και πολλούς άλλους. Προσπαθήσαμε να
συναντηθούμε με όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερους.
Ξεκινήσαμε την επίσκεψη μας, με μια ευλογία και μια
δοξολογία για τον οργανισμό μας στον ναό του Αγίου Μηνά
στο Ηράκλειο από τον Σεβασμιότατο Αρχιεπίσκοπο Κρήτης
κ.κ. Ειρηναίο, που ετοίμασε για μας ένα πλήρες πρόγραμμα
το οποίο ακολουθήθηκε από μια παρουσίαση από τον
τοπικό πολιτιστικό σύλλογο νεολαίας με χορό και τραγούδι
συνοδευόμενο από λύρα και λαούτο και συνεχίστηκε με
τρισάγιο και κέρασμα. Ο Σεβασμιότατος εξέφρασε τις εγκάρδιες
ευχές του και μας έδωσε τις ευλογίες του για το καλό του
οργανισμού μας και του νέου Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου.
Αργότερα εκείνη την ημέρα που συναντηθήκαμε με τον
Περιφερειάρχη Κρήτης, κ. Σταύρο Αρναουτάκη στο παλιό
κτίριο Νομαρχίας ο οποίος μας υποδέχτηκε ο ίδιος μαζί με
3 αντιπεριφεριάρχες, μέλη του Τύπου και Μέσων Μαζικής
Ενημέρωσης. Μετέφερα στο κ. Αρναουτάκη τις ανησυχίες
μας για το νησί και για την Ελλάδα σε αυτούς τους δύσκολους
οικονομικά καιρούς που η πατρίδα μας αντιμετωπίζει
σήμερα. Πρότεινα μερικές ιδέες που θα μπορούσαμε να
εργαστούμε από κοινού για την προώθηση της Κρήτης ως το
ιδανικό σημείο για τουρισμό στην περιοχή της Μεσογείου
και για την προωθήσει των προϊόντων και των ανθρώπων
της μέσα από το περιοδικό μας, την ιστοσελίδα μας και τις
επαφές μας εδώ στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες.
Η ετήσια συνάντηση του Παγκόσμιου Συμβουλίου
Κρητών έγινε Σάββατο 6, Αυγούστου, στο Πολιτιστικό Σπίτι
στο Ρέθυμνο. Όλες οι Ομοσπονδίες με τους εκπροσώπους
τους ήταν παρών για την εκλογή νέου Προέδρου. Ο
Πρόεδρος της Ομοσπονδία της Αυστραλίας, κ. Αντώνη
Τσουρδαλάκη, εκλέχτηκε ως ο νέος Πρόεδρος του ΠΣΚ.
Συναντήθηκα με τον κ. Τσουρδαλάκη, συζητήσαμε αρκετά
θέματα και ανταλλάξαμε αρκετές ιδέες και σκέψεις για το
πώς οι οργανώσεις μας μπορούν να εργαστούν από κοινού
για την υποστήριξη του ΠΣΚ.
Λάβαμε μια πρόσκληση, και είχαμε αρκετά μέλη του
Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου και μελών της ΠΕΑ μαζί μας για
μια ιδιωτική περιήγηση στο Ίδρυμα «Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος»
και στο μουσείο στη Χαλέπα. Είναι πραγματικά άξιο
θαυμασμού να δείτε την πρόοδο που έχει σημειωθεί στο
σπίτι και στο μουσείο προς τιμήν του μεγάλου Κρητικού
Εθνάρχη. Όπως μας ενημέρωσαν βρίσκονται στη διαδικασία
ψηφιοποίησης και αρχειοθέτησης χιλιάδων βιβλίων και
αναμνηστικών που έχουν στη συλλογή τους και προτάθηκε
να προσθέσουμε ένα σύνδεσμο στο δικτυακό μας τόπο.
Ήμασταν επίσης προσκεκλημένοι και επισκεφτήκαμε
τις Πανεπιστημιακές Εκδόσεις Κρήτης του Πανεπιστημίου
Κρήτης στο Ηράκλειο που ξεκίνησε με χρηματοδότηση της
ΠΕΑ, μέσω του Παγκρητίου Ταμείου Επιχορηγήσεων (PEF)
πριν από πολλά χρόνια, στη συνέχεια στο νέο Μουσείο της
Φυσικής Ιστορίας και στο Ενυδρείο που βρίσκονται και τα
δύο στο Ηράκλειο, και το ίδιο βράδυ στο Παρατηρητήριο
των Ανωγείων στην κορυφή του βουνού δίπλα στο
Ψηλορείτη! Το κάθε ένα από αυτά ήταν ένα θαύμα από
μόνο του. Το Ενυδρείο είναι εφάμιλλο και μπορεί κάλλιστα
να συγκριθεί με αυτό στο Σικάγο και είναι το δεύτερο
πιο δημοφιλή αξιοθέατο στην Κρήτη μετά την Κνωσό. Το
Παρατηρητήριο συνεργάζεται με το Πανεπιστήμιο Cal
Tech και ένας Κρητικοαμερικανό από το πανεπιστήμιο του
Berkeley εργάζεται εκεί.
Επίσης, παρακολουθήσαμε την ετήσια συνεδρίαση του
Παγκρητίου Ταμείου Επιχορηγήσεων (PEF) στην Κρήτη.
Η επιτροπή συνεδριάζει κάθε χρόνο με τον Πρύτανη του
Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης και τους διευθυντές διαφόρων
κολεγίων, και παρουσιάζουν και κατανέμουν τις δωρεές που
ψηφίζει η επιτροπή να στηρίξουν κάθε χρόνο. Παρών ήταν
επίσης και ο νέος Πρύτανης ο οποίος μας συνάντησε και
μας ευχαρίστησε για την υποστήριξης και τις εισφορές της
ΠΕΑ. Κάθε ένας από τους διευθυντές έκανε μια παρουσίαση
σχετικά με την πρόοδό τους κατά το παρελθόν έτος και τα
σχέδιά τους για το μέλλον.
Η τοπική επιτροπή του Μινωικού Χωριού στο
Ατσιπόπουλο (PAA-MVI) συναντήθηκε για να συζητήσει την
πρόοδο του έργου και την κατάσταση των πωλήσεων των
μετοχών. Ήταν επωφελής για τις δύο πλευρές που δόθηκε
αναφορά για τις πωλήσεις των μονάδων καθώς και για την
σημαντική πρόοδο του έργου, δεδομένου ότι υπόσχεται να
είναι μια μεγάλη ώθηση για την Κρήτη και την Ελλάδα σε
αυτούς τους δύσκολους οικονομικούς καιρούς.
Όπου και αν πήγαμε, και όποιον και αν συναντήσαμε
έβλεπαν την Παγκρητική Ένωση Αμερικής με μεγάλη
υπόληψη και σεβασμό! Αναγνωρίζουν την οργάνωσή
μας ως την ισχυρότερη όλων των Ομοσπονδιών, αυτή
που έχει κάνει τα περισσότερα και έχει βοηθήσει την
πατρίδα μας, με τη πάροδο των χρόνων. Για αυτό θα
πρέπει να ευχαριστήσουμε τους προκατόχους μας και να
αναγνωρίσουμε τη δουλειά του και τον κόπο τους κατά
τη διάρκεια των ετών, για τη χρηματοδότηση και την
υποστήριξη των ανθρώπων και των έργων στην Κρήτη.
Προσωπικά, αισθάνονται μεγάλη ανάγκη να
διατηρήσουμε και να εμβαθύνουμε τους δεσμούς μας,
την υποστήριξή μας και τη αγάπη μας για το νησί μας και
το λαό του γιατί, αυτός είναι και ο λόγος που κάνουμε
ότι κάνουμε, ο λόγος ο οποίος οργανισμό μας υπάρχει!
Αντιπροσωπεύει τον πολιτισμό μας και την ιστορία μας και

αυτό που πρέπει να περάσουμε στη νεολαία μας.
Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω όλα τα μέλη του
Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου μου, τα μέλη της ΠΕΑ και
της ΠΝΑ, τους φίλους μας και την οικογένειά μου για
την παρουσία τους σε αυτές τις εκδηλώσεις μαζί μου.
Αντιπροσώπευε πραγματικά η δύναμή μας και έδειξε
την υποστήριξη για τη μεγάλη οργάνωση μας. Είμαι
πολύ περήφανος που τέτοια άτομα εκπροσωπούν την
οργάνωσή μας και τους ευχαριστώ γι ‘αυτό.
Τώρα, που γυρίσαμε πίσω στις ΗΠΑ, ήρθε η ώρα
για δουλειά, για προγραμματισμό και συντονισμό των
προσεχών συνεδριάσεων του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου
μας, και για να εργαστούμε στα προγράμματα και τους
στόχους μας για τα επόμενα δύο χρόνια.
Να έχετε ένα καλό χειμώνα!

Προς τον Πρόεδρο της Παγκρητικής Ένωσης Αμερικής

Αγαπητέ πρόεδρε.
Έχουν περάσει μερικές ημέρες από την επιστροφή
σου στην Αμερική και η Κρήτη αναζητά ήδη, εσένα και την
όμορφη παρέα που σε συνόδευε στο ταξίδι σου.
Όλα τα μέλη της αποστολής, Δ.Σ και άλλοι,
εντυπωσίασαν με την άψογη παρουσία τους και με
την έκδηλη αφοσίωση σε σένα και στους στόχους της
Παγκρητικής. Με συνεργάτες σαν κι αυτούς ο πήχης για τον
Πρόεδρο ανεβαίνει πολύ. Επίσης ανεβαίνει από το γεγονός
ότι στην συντροφιά σου βρέθηκαν σε κάποιες εκδηλώσεις
και οι τρείς τελευταίοι Πρώην Πρόεδροι της Οργάνωσης,
υποδηλώνοντας έτσι την στήριξη στο πρόσωπο σου.
Σου εύχομαι Πρόεδρε, αγαπητέ Γιάννη να τα καταφέρεις
καλλίτερα και από όσο φιλοδοξείς. Θα είναι προς όφελος
της Μεγάλης Παγκρητικής.
Σε συναντήσεις που είχα μετά την επίσκεψη σας, με
πολλούς από τους φορείς που συναντήσατε, εισέπραξα
άριστα σχόλια για την συνολική σας παρουσία, αλλά και του
καθενός ξεχωριστά.
Αν μου επιβαλλόταν να ξεχωρίσω κάποιον από όλους
που σε συνόδευαν στην επίσκεψή σου θα ξεχώριζα τα
παιδιά της νέας γενιάς. Με συγκίνησε το αποτέλεσμα
που είχατε να μας επιδείξετε σαν γονείς, όλοι όσοι
συνοδευτήκατε από τα παιδιά σας. Οι παρουσία τους
στις δημόσιες εκδηλώσεις, στις επίσημες επισκέψεις, και
στις κοινωνικές εκδηλώσεις, ήταν πληθωρική, άψογη,
υποδειγματική και γεμάτη Κρήτη. Μπράβο! Να τα χαίρεστε!
Αγαπητέ πρόεδρε να είσαι σίγουρος ότι θα
επαγρυπνούμε στο πλάι της νέας διοίκησης για ότι και
όποτε χρειαστεί να φανούμε χρήσιμοι.

Dear Ms. Manousakis and Venizelion Scholarship Committee,
Please consider this correspondence as an expression of
my appreciation to have been selected to receive the Hedwig Varouh Memorial Scholarship. My family has known Mr.
Varouh for years, and I am honored to be one of this year’s
recipients. The generosity of the Varouh family throughout the years has allowed many students to continue their
education. I am proud to be one of those students and will
remember Mr. Varouh for his generosity and his influence

He was born in Crete and immigrated to the United States at the age of 7, studied architecture and currently runs the
largest thrift banking institution of Illinois. He is also the president of a commercial real estate management company,
partner in a grocery store chain, and former president of several civic and philanthropic groups. Let’s meet the new PAA

Tell us about your family.
My mother and father are from the same village, Vilandredo from Rethymno, Crete. I was born there in 1960 and
immigrated to the states in 1967. Really starting out with
very humble beginnings, they worked hard and raised and
educated myself and my sister Debbie. My sister is married to Peter Balis (Spartiatis). She is a dentist with her own
practice, and they have two children, Zachary and Vanessa.
My dad passed away in 1994, and my mom is now retired
and lives in Chicago.
I am married to Elena Kyriakos Manos. She and her family are from Nemea, Corintho. We were married in 1986.
She is a graduate from the MTSU with an economics degree.
She and her family immigrated and lived in Murfreesboro, (a

ταπεινά και εργάστηκαν σκληρά για να μεγαλώσουν και να
μορφώσουν εμένα και την αδερφή μου Ντέμπι. Η αδελφή
μου είναι παντρεμένη με τον Πήτερ Μπαλή (Σπαρτιάτης),
είναι οδοντίατρος με δική της πρακτική της και έχουν
δύο παιδιά τον Ζαχαρία και τη Βανέσα. Ο πατέρας μου
απεβίωσε το 1994 και η μητέρα μου είναι συνταξιούχος και
ζει στο Σικάγο.
Είμαι παντρεμένος με την Έλενα Κυριάκου Μάνος και

a mutual friend’s home in Chicago on Thanksgiving of 1985
and were engaged five weeks later, New Year’s Eve. She is as
Cretan as I am; she loves Crete and our home there. Elena
has been a member of the Cretan ladies club for many years
and supports and helps run several events there.
Our first child Patricia was born in October 1987. She
graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in
political science. She works for a commissioner for the City
of Chicago. She is beginning her studies for a master’s in
communication this fall. She is currently the Cretan Youth
of Chicago chapter president. Our second child George is a
senior at Valparaiso University and is a finance major. Our
third child is Eleni Eleftheria who will be a sophomore at
Loyola University as a pre-med major. They are all members
of the Cretan chapters of Chicago; they have and are active
members of the PYA and local youth chapter. They love
Crete, Cretan dancing, music and the PYA and PAA. I am very
proud of all of them and their accomplishments.
What is your relationship with the Cretan community?
From the time I was old enough, I have served the Chicago chapter, starting with the youth club, member of the
dance group and dance instructor for many years, a member
of the board, and as former president. I am currently on
the board of the Cretan Fraternity of Chicago. I am proud to
say that my entire family revolves around the “CFC” (Cretan Fraternity of Chicago) and the PAA, their functions and
various events. My children have been a part of the Youth of
Chicago; my wife, mother, cousins and friends all belong to
“Amalthea,” the ladies chapter of Chicago.
The Cretan House for my family was the place where we
could find our fellow Cretans. We all came together there
to share memories and nostalgia of our villages and of the
beautiful and great island we left behind. The Cretans who
gathered there helped each other to get a new start in a
new country; and, more importantly, they taught and passed
on to their children their culture and proud heritage.
At the Cretan House I learned what it meant to be
Cretan: the true meaning of “filotimo and filoxenia,” how
to dance, how to make wine, tsikudia and many priceless
lessons that made me who I am today. These are the lessons
that I, along with the help of the PAA, proudly pass on to my
children, Patricia, George and Eleni.
In what positions have you served the PAA?
Over the years I have served on the board of the Pancretan Endowment Fund and as vice president of the PAA
Minoan Village Board since its inception, and am excited
that we have finalized the plans and are proceeding with
the fundraising for it. I served as 2nd vice president for two
2-year terms and one term as 1st VP. I am blessed to have
had the opportunity to work with some great fellow Cretans.
What is your goal as the new PAA president?
I believe that the main goal of our organization should be

Τμήματος του συλλόγου στο Σικάγο για πολλά χρόνια και
υποστηρίζει και βοηθάει πολλές εκδηλώσεις εκεί.
Το πρώτο παιδί μας, η Πατρίσια γεννήθηκε στις 19
Οκτωβρίου 1987. Αποφοίτησε από το Πανεπιστήμιο της
Αϊόβα με πτυχίο στις Πολιτικές Επιστήμες. Εργάζεται
για έναν Επίτροπο στη πόλη του Σικάγο και αρχίζει το
Διδακτορικό της στην Επικοινωνία αυτό το φθινόπωρο.
Αυτή την περίοδο είναι Πρόεδρος της Κρητικής Νεολαίας
του Σικάγου.
Δεύτερο παιδί μας, ο Γιώργος σπουδάζει στο
Πανεπιστήμιο του Valparaiso στον κλάδο των Οικονομικών
και το τρίτο παιδί μας είναι η Ελένη Ελευθερία και είναι
δευτεροετής φοιτήτριας στο Πανεπιστήμιο Loyola με
σπουδές στον κλάδο της Ιατρικής
Είναι όλοι μέλη του Κρητικού συλλόγου στο Σικάγο,
είναι ενεργά μέλη της ΠΝΑ και του τοπικού συλλόγου της
νεολαίας. Αγαπούν τη Κρήτη, το Κρητικό χορό, τη μουσική,
την ΠΝΑ και την ΠΕΑ. Είμαι πολύ υπερήφανος για τα
κατορθώματα τους.
Ποια είναι η σχέση σας με την Κρητική κοινότητα;
Από τη στιγμή που ενηλικιώθηκα, υπηρέτησα τον
σύλλογο του Σικάγου, αρχίζοντας με τον σύλλογο της
νεολαίας ως μέλος της ομάδας χορού και διδάσκαλος χορού
για πολλά χρόνια, αργότερα ως μέλος του Διοικητικού
Συμβουλίου, και ως Πρόεδρος. Αυτή τη στιγμή είμαι στο
διοικητικό συμβούλιο της Κρητικής Αδελφότητας του
Σικάγου. Μπορώ υπερήφανα να πω ότι όλη η οικογένειά

to promote the Cretan heritage and culture here in the States
and to create programs and opportunities for all of its members. As president my main focus is to rejuvenate our chapters, for I see a need to bring back and strengthen our base
and our core and to increase membership and programs.
“The PAA is its chapters,” and our main focus should be to dig
deep to see what their needs are and how the PAA can better
help them. The Leadership Conferences were a good start to
this and we can now take this information and create a comprehensive communications strategy between and among
chapters. This can be accomplished in communication with
our district governors and the 3rd vice president. We have
been getting closer to our fellow Cretans in Canada for the
past few administrations; good progress has been made and
there are many benefits for both organizations to unite.
What is your plan for our Cretan youth?
The Pancretan youth IS the PAA of tomorrow, and establishing and strengthening our support for our children is vital.
As the father of three children, one just out of college and
two in college, I know all too well their needs and wants. I believe we need to establish a network where we can give our
youth the support they need, require and demand. The needs
of today are different from those of the past. We no longer
have the immigrants looking for a place to live or for a job to
be able to get by. We now have their grandchildren looking
for support, support to gain access to good universities and
gain employment and internships into Fortune 500 companies. Our new young professionals or CAN (Cretan Alumni

Το Κρητικό Σπίτι για την οικογένειά μου ήταν το μέρος
όπου μπορούσαμε να βρούμε τους φίλους μας. Όλοι
μας πάμε εκεί για να μοιραστούμε τις αναμνήσεις και
τη νοσταλγία των χωριών μας και το όμορφο νησί που
αφήσαμε πίσω. Οι Κρητικοί οι οποίοι συγκεντρώθηκαν
εκεί βοήθησαν ο ένας τον άλλο να κάνουν μια νέα αρχή
σε μια νέα χώρα, και το πιο σημαντικό, να διδάξουν και
να περάσουν στα παιδιά τους τον πολιτισμό μας και την
περήφανη κληρονομιά μας.
Στο Κρητικό Σπίτι έμαθα τι σημαίνει να είσαι Κρητικός:
το αληθινό νόημα της λέξης φιλότιμο και φιλοξενία, πώς
να χορεύω, πώς κάνουν το κρασί και την τσικουδιά και
πολλά ανεκτίμητα μαθήματα που με έκαναν τον άνθρωπο,
το σύζυγο και το πατέρα που είμαι σήμερα. Αυτά είναι τα
μαθήματα που έχω περάσει με υπερηφάνεια στα παιδιά
μου με τη βοήθεια της ΠΕΑ.
Τι θέσεις έχετε υπηρετήσει στην ΠΕΑ;
Έχω υπηρετήσει στο Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο του
Ταμείου του Παγκρητίου Κληροδοτήματος, Αντιπρόεδρος
του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου του Μινωικού Χωριού
από την ίδρυσή του, και είμαι ενθουσιασμένος που
έχουμε οριστικοποιήσει τα σχέδια και προχωρούν με τη
συγκέντρωση χρημάτων για αυτό. Υπηρέτησα ως δεύτερος
αντιπρόεδρος της ΠΕΑ για τέσσερα έτη, και δύο στη θέση
του πρώτου αντιπροέδρου. Είμαι ευλογημένος που είχα
την ευκαιρία να συνεργαστώ με μερικούς εξαίρετους
συμπατριώτες Κρητικούς.
Ποιοί είναι οι στόχοι σας ως ο νέος Πρόεδρος της ΠΕΑ;
Πιστεύω ότι ο κύριος στόχος της οργάνωσής μας θα
πρέπει να είναι η προώθηση της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς
και του πολιτισμού της Κρήτης εδώ στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες
και η δημιουργία προγραμμάτων και ευκαιριών για όλα
τα μέλη μας. Ως Πρόεδρος, κύριος στόχος μου είναι να
αναζωογονηθούν οι σύλλογοι μας, γιατί διαπιστώνω
την ανάγκη να έρθουν πίσω και να ενισχύσουν το κορμό
της οργάνωσης μας, να αυξήσουμε τα μέλη μας και τα
προγράμματα μας. Η ΠΕΑ είναι οι σύλλογοι της, και για
αυτό, βασικός μας στόχος πρέπει να είναι να κοιτάξουμε
βαθιά και να δούμε τι ανάγκες που έχουν και πώς η ΠΕΑ
μπορεί να βοηθήσει καλύτερα. Τα Συνέδρια Ηγεσίας ήταν
μια καλή αρχή και μπορούμε τώρα με τις πληροφορίες που
συλλέξαμε να δημιουργήσουμε μια συνολική στρατηγική
επικοινωνίας μεταξύ της ΠΕΑ και των συλλόγων. Αυτό
μπορεί να επιτευχθεί με την διαρκή επικοινωνία με τους
Διοικητές Περιφερειών και τον τρίτο αντιπρόεδρο. Είμαστε

and Mentoring program.” We have the people.
We have the resources. We have to tap into them
to allow this to come to fruition.
With what other organizations are you involved?
I am a member of several civic and philanthropic groups. I have served on the board of
my church for many years, and I am a member
of AHEPA. I was president and chairman for two
terms. I am a member of the executive board of
the United Hellenic Voters of America (UHVA), a
non-partisan civic organization, which inducted
me into their Greek-America Hall of Fame two
years ago in 2009. I was also recognized by the
same group years before and given the GreekAmerican Businessman of the Year Award in
2007.
As President of UHVA, my mission was to
support Greek-Americans and their issues here
and in Greece. I organized and have been sending a group of our representatives to the United
States Embassy in Greece to represent our organization for their annual Fourth of July Celebration Gala. Over the years I assisted several of our
Greek-American youth in obtaining deserved
jobs in city- and state-level positions.
Tell us about your professional career.
I studied architecture at the University of
Illinois and received a bachelor’s degree from
there. After practicing architecture for several
years, I moved into the construction industry, and
then began a design/build company with my wife
Elena in Nashville, Tennessee where we lived for
eight years. Upon our return to my hometown of
Chicago, I became involved with commercial real
estate and started a company, Jemco and Associates, a property management/ownership company for several commercial retail strip shopping
centers in and around the Chicago Metro area.
This ultimately led me to my career and
current position as president of Bank Financial,
the largest thrift institution in Illinois with approximately $1.8 billion in assets. We specialize
in commercial real estate loans in approximately
14 States nationwide. I speak on commercial real
estate finance for several industry-related affairs
across the country.
My family’s commercial real estate property
and management company brought about an
opportunity, with my Cretan koubari/partners
to open a chain of grocery stores in and around
the Chicago Metro area. We carry a full array of
products which also include many products from
Crete.

ζωτικής σημασίας. Σαν πατέρας τριών παιδιών, ένα σχεδόν απόφοιτο

τους. Πιστεύω ότι πρέπει να δημιουργηθεί ένα δίκτυο όπου μπορούμε
να δώσουμε στη Νεολαία μας, την υποστήριξη που χρειάζεται, απαιτεί
και ζητά.
Οι ανάγκες του σήμερα είναι διαφορετικές από εκείνες του
παρελθόντος. Δεν έχουμε πλέον τους μετανάστες που αναζητούν ένα
μέρος για να μείνουν ή μια θέση εργασίας. Τώρα έχουμε τα εγγόνια
τους να ψάχνουν για υποστήριξη, την υποστήριξη για να αποκτήσουν
πρόσβαση σε καλά πανεπιστήμια, να αποκτήσουν απασχόληση και
πρακτική άσκηση σε εταιρείες του Fortune 500. Το τμήμα των νέων
επαγγελματιών της ΠΕΑ, το CAN (Cretan Alumni Network) είναι μια καλή
αρχή. Η συνέχεια αυτού μπορεί να είναι η “Δικτύωση ΠΕΑ και πρόγραμμα

Έχω υπηρετήσει στο Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο της Εκκλησίας μου για
πολλά χρόνια, και είμαι μέλος της ΑΧΕΠΑ. Ήμουν πρόεδρος για δύο
θητείες, και είμαι μέλος της Εκτελεστικής Επιτροπής του Οργανισμού
Ενωμένων Ελλήνων Ψηφοφόρων Αμερικής (UHVA), μια μη κομματική
οργάνωση, η οποία με τίμησε με το βραβείο Greek-America Hall of
Fame to το 2009. Aναγνωρίστηκα επίσης από την ίδια ομάδας ως
Ελληνο-Αμερικανός Επιχειρηματίας της Χρονιάς το 2007.
Ως Πρόεδρος της UHVA, η αποστολή μου ήταν να υποστηρίξουμε
τους Ελληνο-Αμερικανούς και τα θέματα μας εδώ και στην Ελλάδα.
Οργάνωσα και τώρα στέλνουμε ομάδες εκπροσώπων μας στην
Πρεσβεία των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών στην Ελλάδα που εκπροσωπεί τον
οργανισμό μας στην ετήσια γιορτή που διοργανώνει η Πρεσβεία στης
4 Ιουλίου. Με τα χρόνια έχω βοηθήσει αρκετούς Έλληνες της Αμερικής
και ειδικά τη νεολαία μας για την απόκτηση θέσεις εργασίας σε
πολιτειακό και κρατικό επίπεδο.

Σπούδασα αρχιτεκτονική στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Ιλινόις στο
Σικάγο και έλαβα πτυχίο εκεί. Μετά την εξάσκηση αρχιτεκτονικής για
πολλά χρόνια, έχω περάσει στην κατασκευαστική βιομηχανία, όπου
δημιούργησα μια αρχιτεκτονική και εργολαβική εταιρεία με τη σύζυγό
του Έλενα μου, στο Νάσβιλ του Τεννεσί όπου κατοικούσαμε για 8
χρόνια. Με την επιστροφή μας στο Σικάγο, άρχισα να ασχολούμαι με
στον κλάδο των εμπορικά κτηματομεσιτικών και δημιούργησα μια
επιχείρηση, τη “Jemco and Associates”, μια εταιρεία διαχείρισης/
ιδιοκτησίας για διάφορα εμπορικά κέντρα μέσα και γύρω από την
μητροπολιτική περιοχή του Σικάγου.
Αυτή οδήγησε τελικά τη καριέρα μου στη τρέχουσα θέση του
Προέδρου της Bank Financial, του μεγαλύτερου φορέα δανειοδότησης
εμπορικών ακινήτων στο Ιλινόις με χαρτοφυλάκιο 1,8 δισ. δολάρια.
Ειδικευόμαστε σε εμπορικά δάνεια ακινήτων σε περίπου 14 πολιτείες
σε στην Αμερική.
Η εμπορική ακίνητη περιουσία της οικογένειάς μου και η εταιρεία
διαχείρισης ακινήτων επέφερε μια ευκαιρία, με τους κρητικούς
κουμπάρους και συνέταιρους μου, για το άνοιγμα μιας αλυσίδας
καταστημάτων σούπερ μάρκετ μέσα και γύρω από την μητροπολιτική

● That there will be a tribute night to PAA
women at each Convention;
● That future Convention events showcase
the cooking skills of the PAA women and preserve
traditional Cretan recipes, and shall also utilize
Cretan olive oil;
● That two pages in KPHTH Magazine to be
available every month and will be produced by
PAA women with the same deadline;
● That it is resolved that the decision of the
Credentials Committee to deny the 2nd VP credentials are overturned.
● That a certificate be awarded to each of the
3 Chapters of the Youth, Women, and General divisions of the PAA which have the largest increase
in members each year.
● That one member from the Executive Board
(the one that lives in the area) should visit the chapter for the events to support the chapter if possible.
● That it is recommended that the PAA Board
to continue to have meetings in all Districts across
the country and to begin with the District that
had not had a meeting the previous two years.
● That the PAA Board coordinate the convention and pre-convention meetings in a way that
every delegate has a chance to participate and be
part of preparing the new resolutions.
● That it is recommended to the Cultural
Committee that it explore the production of a
CD of our Cretan Youth’s music for insertion in
KPHTH Magazine;
● That 7 scholarships of $2,000.00 each for
studies at the University of Crete be awarded
from the funds so designated in the scholarship
fund;
● That the PAA, through its Philanthropic Endowment Fund, endeavor to raise funds for and
support the Alzheimers Institute of Memory in
Crete;
● That the PAA, through its Philanthropic Endowment Fund, endeavor to raise funds for the
Rodanthos Cancer Treatment Center in Crete;
● That a committee consisting of Dimitris
Halivelakis, Helen Kohilakis, and John Kokolakis
work through the PAA Cultural and Education
Committee to raise funds for the maintenance of
the Kayale Statue in Chania, Crete;

Summary of Bylaws Changes adopted by
2/3 majority at the 42nd PAA Convention
Article 24 Dues: Dues will be $17.00, except that PYA members shall pay
$12.00. Of these amounts, $2.00 shall be earmarked for the Scholarship
Fund for studies at the University of Crete. Each family shall have one
subscription to KPHTH at the cost of $20.00.
Article 24 Outlays to PYA Conferences: The hosting chapter of each of 3
PYA conferences (2 winter conferences, and one summer conference in
the non-convention year) shall receive a $4,000 payment. The PYA and
hosting chapter must first submit an itemized budget for each conference
for approval by the PAA Board, and an after-event financial report.
Articles 8, 10, 11: Will permit checks to be signed by the Treasurer and
one other authorized officer, rather than by 3 officers.
Article 4: States that the Districts are subsections of the PAA, and not
independent entities, and requires the Board of the PAA to establish
guidelines for all the Districts to be used in lieu of District Bylaws.
Article 32: Cretan Professional Society name is changed to the Cretan
Alumni Network (CAN), and the mission is revised.
Article 29, PEF: The PEF Committee is expanded to allow two nonvoting honorary members

μίας ζωής γεμάτης αγώνα, ανιδιοτελούς
αγάπης για τον συνάνθρωπο, την φύση
και το Κρητικό στοιχείο.
Η ζωή του Γ. Βαρουχάκη από την
Καλυβιανή της Κισσάμου είναι η
ιστορία ενός μετανάστη που εργάθηκε
πολύ, δημιουργούσε διαρκώς,
σεβόταν τον άνθρωπο, προσέφερε
στην κοινωνία και δεν ξέχασε ποτέ τις
καταβολές του.
Από μικρός έμαθε να «βγάζει το
ψωμί του» πλένοντας μπουκάλια
κρασιού και λαδιού στην Αλεξάνδρεια
όπου τον έστειλαν οι γονείς του.
Συνέχισε την εκπαίδευσή του όταν
υπηρέτησε στο Ελληνικό Ναυτικό και
εργάσθηκε στην Αθήνα ως λογιστής.
Ακολούθησε την καρδιά του όταν
παντρεύθηκε την Αμερικανίδα Hedy
Klein που γνώρισε κατά τη διάρκεια
των διακοπών της στην Ελλάδα το 1937

In Memory of
George Varouh

Our compatriot, friend and PAA
great benefactor Mr. George Varouchakis passed away at the age of 103,
closing the chapter on a life full of
struggle, unselfish love for his fellow
man, nature, and the Cretan element.
The life of George Varouchakis from
Kaliviani, Kissamos, Crete is the story
of an immigrant who worked hard
constantly creating. He respected his
fellow man, provided for his community and never forgot his roots. From
an early age he learned to make a living
by washing bottles of wine and oil in
Alexandria, where he was sent by his
parents. He continued his education
when he served in the Greek Navy and
worked in Athens as an accountant. He
followed his heart when he married
Hedy Klein, whom he met during her
holidays in Greece in 1937, and did not
hesitate to follow her to Ohio where
they settled and had three children.
George Varouh, as he was known,
investigated many professional paths
until he successfully set up his own
fuel distribution company in 1957.
Since then has continued to expand its
operations in other areas securing his
family financially. But his
great economic
success did not
alter his kind nature. His Cretan
heart expressed
in every way his
love for his fellow man, Orthodoxy and especially the Cretan element
of America.
His first priority was to educate
the young members of our organization, and he donated $150,000 to the
PAA Scholarship Fund in memory of
his beloved wife and partner for 61
years. He also donated to the fund in
memory of his son Nicholas. In addition, he managed to create a scholarship fund for the Cretan Association of
Cleveland, which renamed their club
after him in 2009. His sons Aris and
Ronald followed the example of their
father and continued donations to the
Scholarship Fund of the PAA and to
Cretan clubs. His charitable acts were
extraordinary in the Greek-American
and the broader American society. He
also loved animals and offered financial
help to many animal welfare organizations.
Let us honor his memory and let us
express our gratitude for his contributions to our organization by volunteering in order to ensure the continuation
of our cultural heritage. I would like
to express to his sons Ari and Ronald,
his friends, and the great family of PAA
my sincere condolences on the loss of
this great man. His life will continue
to inspire us and teach us the values
of selfless love and charity to fellow
human beings and solidarity. His work
is a separate chapter in the history and
legacy of Cretan and more widely, the
Greek presence in the USA.
We will remember him forever.

στο Οχάϊο όπου εγκαταστάθηκαν και
απέκτησαν τρία παιδιά.
Ο κατά κόσμο George Varouh
ανίχνευσε πολλές επαγγελματικές
διαδρομές μέχρι να δημιουργήσει με
επιτυχία τις δικές του επιχειρήσεις
διανομής πετρελαίου το 1957. Κι από
τότε δεν σταμάτησε να επεκτείνει
τις επιχειρήσεις του και σε άλλους
τομείς εδραιώνοντας οικονομικά την
οικογένειά του.
Όμως η μεγάλη οικονομική του
επιτυχία δεν αλοίωσε την ευγενική του
φύση. Η Κρητική του καρδιά εξέφραζε
με κάθε τρόπο την αγάπη του προς τον
συνάνθρωπο, την Ορθοδοξία και κυρίως
στο Κρητικό στοιχείο της Αμερικής.
Από τις πρώτες του έγνοιες υπήρξε η
εκπαίδευση των νέων αφού δώρησε στο
ταμείο Υποτροφιών της ΠΕΑ $150.000
στη μνήμη της αγαπημένης του και επί
61 χρόνια συντρόφου και λίγο αργότερα
στη μνήμη του γιου του Νικόλα.
Φρόντισε όμως να δημιουργήσει Ταμείο
Υποτροφιών και στον Κρητικό Σύλλογο
του Cleveland ο οποίος από το 2009
φέρει το όνομά του.
Οι γιοι του Άρης και Ρόναλτ
ακολουθώντας το παράδειγμα του
πατέρα τους συνέχισαν τις δωρεές στο
Ταμείο Υποτροφιών της ΠΕΑ και στα
Κρητικά σωματεία.
Η φιλανθρωπική του δράση υπήρξε
μεγάλη μέσα στην Ελληνοαμερικανική
αλλά και στην ευρύτερη Αμερικανική
κοινωνία. Υπήρξε επίσης φιλόζωος και
προσέφερε οικονομική βοήθεια και σε
πολλούς οργανισμούς προστασίας ζώων.
Ας τιμήσουμε τη μνήμη του και ας
εκφράσουμε την ευγνωμοσύνη μας
για όσα έκανε έμπρακτα συνεχίζοντας
τον έργο του με προσφορά και
εθελοντισμό για τη διασφάλιση της
πολιτιστικής μας κληρονομιάς.
Εκφράζω στους γιους του Άρη
και Ρόναλντ, στους οικείους τους και
στη μεγάλη οικογένεια της ΠΕΑ τα
εγκάρδια και ειλικρινή συλλυπητήρια
μου για την απώλειά του.
Η ζωή του θα συνεχίσει να μας
εμπνέει και να μας διδάσκει τις
αξίες της ανιδιοτελούς αγάπης και
προσφοράς στον συνάνθρωπό και της
αλληλεγγύης.
Το έργο του θα αποτελεί ένα
ιδιαίτερο κεφάλαιο και παρακαταθήκη
στην ιστορία της Κρητικής και ευρύτερα
Ελληνικής παρουσίας στις ΗΠΑ.
Θα τον θυμόμαστε πάντα. !

It is with great pleasure that the Venizelion Scholarship Committee announces the 2011 recipients. The 30 students who were awarded this year showed exemplary capabilities, both in their participation in the PAA and the
high achievements in their studies. Also, their involvement in extracurricular activities and awareness of the needs
of their communities aided the committee in the selection of these very worthy students.
During the four years of my term as chair of the scholarship fund, I have come to know many of our
youth, personally, and I am proud to have worked so closely with them. Their dedication and love of the PAA
is very evident, as is the love for their Cretan heritage and culture. I found that most are living this culture,
enthusiastic about their homeland and living it with pride and conviction. The power of the PAA and its
influence, along with the many programs geared towards the youth, has been the major impetus behind this
success. I also found that the parents’ passionate involvement in their children’s activities regarding the PYA, in particular, is
immeasurable.
As my term has now ended, I am happy to turn over the chairmanship to Dr. Lefteris Zervos, who, himself, is a former scholarship recipient, having “grown-up” in the PAA. He had been involved in the PYA and PAA for many years and on the local level,
working, more recently, with the committees in the planning and execution of the 42nd PAA Convention in Florida.
It has been my honor and privilege to serve on the PAA board, having met so many wonderful people and forged so many
new friendships. It has truly been a memorable experience.

message from the PAA Scholarship Chair
It is with great pleasure I take on the responsibilities of scholarship chair. I am a graduate of the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in science, a master’s degree in developmental biology and
a doctor’s degree in dental surgery. In the past, I have served on the national board in several different
capacities. I was 3rd vice president under Mr. George Vardakis for four years. I was also on the University
of Crete Endowment Fund for four years under Mr. Emmanuel Velivasakis. I, too, was a recipient of a
Venizelion Scholarship. This program has been a cornerstone of Pancretan and has helped many young
Cretans in their educational endeavors. As scholarship Chairman, I pledge to administer the program per
the constitutional guidelines and continue the wonderful job the previous chairs have done. In addition,
my goal is to also reach out to past recipients and other potential donors to increase the corpus of the fund. Over the years,
Pancretan has given all of us an amazing opportunity to help and be helped. Programs like the scholarship fund validate PAA’s
philanthropic purpose. I am proud and honored to have the opportunity to participate in this worthy program. Please feel
free to contact me with any suggestions, concerns, or donations. With your help, we can elevate the scholarship program.

renaming Green to Sheiko Elementary was a decision that
wasn’t a difficult one. Kathy
has impacted over 13,000
students and families since
she began her years of service
to our district in 1985. She
always would help any young
administrator who entered
our district. She truly served
as an administrator’s administrator through her time,
knowledge, and giving spirit,
serving the community in a
way that no other administrator ever has in 26 years.”

Einstandig said Kathy exhibited passion, compassion, order and humor in a way that
gave students confidence in
themselves. “She did a great
job instilling self-confidence
in young minds and our
future leaders for generations,” Einstandig said. As a second generation
Cretan American, Kathy’s
comments seem “natural”
and embody our American
Ideals: “Green (school) has
always been a very diverse
community. Our children
came from many nationalities and ethnic groups. They
learned how to celebrate
and recognize their differences. We always worked
on our school themes. We
would highlight the diversity in our community and
celebrate it. For me to see
children getting along that
way was great.”

Farewell
Patrick Leigh Fermor 1915-2011

I dedicate the following lines to
the memory of my dear friend and
comrade in arms, Patrick Michael Leigh
Fermor. To those of us who knew him
in those days, his name was “Mihali.”
It was an honor to know him and
to work with him. From Lasithi to
Rethymnon, through the mountains
and along the seashores of Crete, it
was my pleasure to walk at his side.
Throughout these many years since
the war, Mihali honored me even
greater with our continued communication. We spoke on the phone
often. But in the last few years,
as his hearing began to fail him,
we would exchange letters. I will
always treasure these letters written
in perfect Greek and always ending
with the prayer “O Theos na mas ‘e
panto thinamoni!”
Mihali was extremely brave. But
bravery alone is not enough to assure survival. He was equally intelligent, athletic and strong. Handsome and charismatic, his smile and
good humor was enough to disperse
the gloom of any desperate situation or setback we encountered.
Many times when our outlook was
dark, his cheerfulness led to song
and dance. His favorite song, which
was very popular in those days, was
called “Filedem.” He sang it so passionately and so often that we gave him the
nickname ”Filedem.”
Mihali loved life in the mountains of
Crete. After the war he wrote many articles and gave many speeches all over
Greece. He always exalted the brave
patriotism and dedication to freedom
of the Cretan shepherds, “E voskee”. In
one of those speeches, where I had the
good fortune to be present, he stated
that the Cretan shepherds were guides,
protectors, and providers of food and
other support to the resistance. He
said, “…without their total participation, we could not survive in Crete.”
He went on to propose to the Greek
government the establishment of
a medal of bravery to be named
“Voskoparasimo” to honor the Cretan shepherds for whom he had so
much praise.
Patrick M. Leigh Fermor was
unquestionably a true and sincere
lover of all things Cretan. He assured me that he loved Crete, its
people, its landscapes and especially the “raki.” However, he feared
that if he settled in Crete, these
loves would present too much of a
distraction from his greater passion for his writings. He, therefore,
chose to live his life in Kardamili, in
Messinia.
Mihali, although we must say
“Farewell” to you, as Cretans we will
always embrace and hold close to our
hearts the memory of “Filedem”!

HOW I FOUND THE FIRST MINOAN SHIP

Formerly with Hellenic Department of Underwater Archaeology Greek Ministry of Culture
During the period known as Middle
Minoan II B (ca. 1750 B.C.), the maritime
trade of Minoan Crete was blossoming
across the Mediterranean Sea. The first
palaces at Knossos, Malia and Phaestos
had already been built and the developing economy contributed to a Minoan
thalassocracy that would last for many
centuries. The Minoans supplanted the
inhabitants of the Cyclades in sea commerce and an organized navy reached
Attica, Egypt and the Levant. Copper
was imported from Cyprus and Attica,
gold, semi-precious stones and ivory
from Egypt, and tin from Mesopotamia
reached them through their trading post
at the port of Ugarit in Syria. The Minoans exported olive oil, wine, aromatic

oils, pharmaceutical products, textiles
and the famous Kamares Ware, manycolored vases with floral decorations on
a black background. The expansion of
trade created the necessity to construct
the first artificial harbor installations at
Mochlos, Pseira and Pachia Ammos in
Lasithi, Plaka in the south of Herakleion,
and Stalos in Hania, to mention only
a few that I have personally surveyed.
The early harbour engineers built quays
and moles by flattening the rocky coast
or a natural reef so as to accommodate
large boulders on top for loading and
unloading the cargoes and protecting
them from rough seas and winds.
The Greek historian Thucydides in
his History of the Peloponnesian War
refers to the legendary King Minos as
the first ruler of the seas, someone
who created a great kingdom, rid the
seas of pirates, and protected sea
routes and trade. Evidence to date for
this Pax Minoica has been found especially in iconography, such as depictions
in seals, on vessels, on wall paintings,
and in ship models. Despite the fact
that through the centuries thousands
of ships have sunk in the Cretan Seas,
the location of even a single Minoan
ship remained no more than a dream
for archeologists and historians.
I long hoped in decades of service
for the Hellenic Department of Maritime Antiquities to find a Minoan ship,
but never had the chance to hunt for

one directly until 2003, when I was
entrusted with research funds from the
Institute of Aegean Prehistory (INSTAP).
Both the Cretan Sea on the north and
the Libyan Sea on the south present
promising locations to search for prehistoric vessels. Yet the seas around the
island still are scarcely explored, and
no ship of the Minoan period had been
found despite the efforts of several
international teams.
Most of the 20-day project in the
summer of 2003 was devoted to geophysical surveys. Using side-scan sonar
with Professor George Anastasakis of
the University of Athens, we located
dozens of targets. The most promising
we dived to investigate. There were
rocks, there were airplanes, and there
were ships of almost every period,
but nothing prehistoric. Finally as the
survey was drawing to a close, I tried
to reason out the most likely spot for a
ship to have sunk. It should be near an
island that was inhabited in antiquity
and would have to use ships to remain
in contact with mainland Crete. Thus I
directed our divers to search near the
Minoan harbour of the island town
of Pseira. Within a few hours we had
found the scattered cargo of a Minoan
shipwreck, marking a milestone in the
history of seafaring.

Bay of Mirambello, Lasithi Province,
East Crete, at a depth of around 40-50
meters. An additional survey in the
summer of 2004 convinced us that the
finds at the sea bottom truly were a
Minoan cargo, and convinced INSTAP
to provide continued financial support.
Research excavation followed during
the next 5 years and by 2009 over 200
artifacts had been recovered from the
sea bottom in exceptionally good condition despite remaining for thousands
of years underwater.
The majority of the finds belonged
to transport vessels of impressive size
suitable for liquids. Large numbers
of them were wine amphorae, and
beak-spouted jugs. However, elegant
cups, cooking pots and fishing weights
belonging to the ship’s crew were also
found. Our ship was not a merchant
trader traveling long distances for exotic
goods. It plied the shores of northern
Crete, carrying essentials for daily use.
The rocky bottom on which the ship
fell contained too little sand to preserve any of the wood from the ship.
Although we found no remains of the
wooden hull of the shipwreck, the over
200 artifacts from the cargo have given
us much information about a ship that
is 3750 years old. We have found the
first boat produced by a daring nautical
society that lived from maritime trade,
built sailing ships and transported goods
across the Aegean north of Crete. We
were able to estimate the length of the
boat, which was 10 – 15m. We found
the largest collection of Middle Minoan IIB amphoras and transport jugs
ever located on East Crete, which will
give future generations of archaeologists abundant material to study. What
remains is careful study of the artifacts,
an attempt to determine their place
of origin, their restoration, and final
display in the Museum of Sitia.
The team that carried out the
survey and excavation was almost
completely Greek. Key members of
our team were a trio of Cretan sponge
divers. We originally employed them
to dive on targets found by geophysical
methods, and they became enthusiastic supporters of archaeology, and
have been part of the project ever
since. Most other team members were
young Greek divers with specialties in
archaeology, architecture, and photography. This project would never have
been possible without the support
and encouragement of the Institute
for Aegean Prehistory. The dedication
of all the team members has been remarkable. They dived at great depths,
withstood uncertainties about weather
and arrival of permits, all for very modest compensation, love of the sea, and
the chance to participate in a project
they would remember forever.

A bet is a bet!
At the Board meeting in Detroit
earlier this year, newly elected PAA
President John Manos found himself
next to Former PAA President Stavros
Semanderes. Their conversation went
from discussing PAA business and the
PYA conference that was taking place
over that weekend to sports. Seeing as
how the meeting was being held as the
NFL playoffs were underway, their conversation quickly revolved around each
of their hometown teams that were
scheduled to play; namely, the Chicago
Bears (John’s team), and the Pittsburgh
Steelers (Stavros’s team). One thing led
to another, and after a few pentozalia
and as their Cretan spirit was high and
blood was rushing, they entered into a
bet as to which team would go farther
in the season. As the Cretan spirit
escalated to an even higher level they
decided that the loser would give the
winner a “Trago”--an old goat! Unfortunately, the previous year’s Super Bowl
champions, the Chicago Bears, lost the
following week and were eliminated
from the playoffs. Even worse, John
lost his bet because Stavros’s team
ultimately went on to play in the Super
Bowl against the Green Bay Packers.
John’s new dilemma was to find
an opportunity to pay his debt and
figure out where to find a trago! The
best opportunity John had to make
good on his loss was at the District III
Conference in Akron that was held on
May 14. He called upon his friends and
locals to assist in the search for the
Trago. There was ample supply of goats
at local meat markets, but none that
were alive. His friends in the area, Mr.
Denney, Mr. Kountis, Mr. Verikakis, Mr.
Vitakis, and Mr. Bourbakis, all went out

hunting for the prize. Days, weeks and
a month went by and no one could find
a live Trago. It seemed that they would
have to get one from Illinois and drive
it down to the District III Conference in
Akron. Mr. Manos could only imagine
it--his son and himself in a van with an
old goat for a drive of seven-hours!
Finally, Jim Denney called in a few
favors and drove a few hours away
from Girard, Ohio, picked up a beautiful
Trago, and brought him to Akron’s dinner dance. Needless to say, Stavros and
an audience of over 250 at the dinner
dance were in disbelief when the Trago
was escorted into the church hall by
John’s son George, and Mr. Manos then
presented it to Stavro. It was a beautiful Trago and one that John was certainly proud to present. To his surprise,
Mr. Semanderes would not accept it!
He stated that in order for him to accept the bet he wanted it to be cooked!
Mr. Manos will now be looking for the
next opportunity to prepare the cooked
Trago either in Chicago or in Pittsburgh.

Daughters of Crete
In 1938, seventeen Cretan Ladies
gathered in the little town of Morrison,
Colorado to form the Daughters of
Crete. They were brought together by
a love for their homeland and the desire to spend a few hours together with
those who shared a common heritage.
Through the years, as others came
into the group--new immigrants,
American-born children of the founders
and even non-Cretan wives of Cretan

men--the Daughters of Crete have done
more than just meet for afternoons of
companionship. Although the group
has rarely numbered more than 45 at
one time, their accomplishments are
many. Along with other Cretan groups,
they have contributed to hospitals, orphanages, churches, scholarship funds
and community Greek school awards,
truly fine and generous expressions of
the Cretan character.
The first Daughters of Crete President was Helen Milonas. Other women
following her lead were Katina Paterakis, Zabia Foteinou, Fofo Papantonakis,
Eleni Sampson, Mary Taylor, Jane Manos, Liz Touris, Stamatia Spanos, Mary
Plakorus, Christine Pavlakis, Maria
Tsikoudakis, Betty Grillos, Mary Naylor,
Eleni Athanasopoulos and Sandy Kounalis .
Today the Daughters of Crete of
Denver, Colorado, have proudly continued our culture and heritage. Our activities include church gatherings, baking kourambiethes (2400 for the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church festival), sewing costumes for our youth dancers,
philanthropic works, (assisting with Sandos baskets at Christmas), Christmas
party, summer picnic, fall Glendi, and fundraising for the benefit of many of the
church projects.
Our present officers are Sandy Kounalis, president; Eleni Athanasopoulos,
vice president; Maria Andretsos; Mary Elaine Priddy, corresponding secretary;
Mary Naylor, treasurer; and Alexandria Kounalis Melisaratos, youth advisor.
We have loved and nurtured our children in the knowledge of their Cretan
culture and support the Idomeneas Youth Chapter with their activities.
Thank you for giving us this opportunity to share our presence.

Condolences

in sleep in the Lord on July
20th in Syracuse, New York.

He fought cancer for years.

Stratakis, M.D., D.Sc, who has been named Scientific Director of the Division of Intramural Research (DIR) at the Eunice
Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child
Health and Human
Development.
“Dr. Stratakis brings
extensive research
experience and a broad
clinical background
to the position,” said
NICHD Director, Alan
E. Guttmacher, M.D.
“While there were an
impressively large number of extremely well
qualified applicants
for this position, it was
clear that—even apart from his outstanding performance as
Acting Scientific Director—Dr. Stratakis was the candidate
best suited to lead the intramural program over the coming
years.”
As the NICHD’s Scientific Director, Dr. Stratakis will
oversee the research programs of 85 scientific investigators
and more than 300 trainees. The NICHD DIR is made up
of 11 research programs with approximately 79 units and
sections. The objective of the DIR is to ensure the birth of
healthy infants, to ensure the health of infants and children
as they develop into adulthood, and to optimize the health
of women. Research in the DIR focuses on acquiring information to enhance understanding of the full range of human
development and reproduction.

“I am humbled to have been chosen to lead one of the
largest, most distinguished, of the NIH’s intramural programs, but I am also looking forward to it,” Dr. Stratakis said.
“I have already served in an acting capacity for more than
two years, but every day I discover new things at NICHD
and feel great admiration for the variety and strength of the
research taking place within the division.”
A native of Greece, Dr. Stratakis received his M.D. and
D.Sc degrees from the University of Athens. He trained at
the Hospital Cochin in Paris, France, before coming to the
NICHD, first as a student, then as a Visiting Research Associate, and then as a Research Fellow. He completed his
pediatrics residency, as well as fellowships in pediatric endocrinology and clinical genetics, at Georgetown University.
In 1996, he returned to the NICHD as a senior fellow, was
promoted to staff scientist in 1997, and appointed tenure
track investigator in 1998.
Dr. Stratakis is well known for the identification and characterization of the gene for Carney complex, a disorder that
increases the risk for benign tumors of the heart and adrenal glands. In subsequent work, he deciphered the genetic
underpinnings of a number of other endocrine disorders,
among them primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease, a rare disease affecting the adrenal glands, as well as a
class of disorders causing overgrowth of the adrenal glands
(bilateral adrenocortical hyperplasias).

The 24th Annual Scholarship Luncheon sponsored by
Minos-Crete and Cretan Ladies Society “Proodos” was held
May 12 at the Cretan Club in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Following a delicious roast pork dinner, the highlight of
the luncheon was hearing from the recipients themselves.
Those awarded scholarships were Alex Stebbins, MinosCrete Scholarship; Nikos Hatzis, Rovithis Memorial Scholarship; Nick Kamyk, Minos-Crete Scholarship; Victoria Perrakis,
Proodos Scholarship; Christiana Doulakis, Michael Doulakis
Memorial Scholarship; and Katerina Michelakis, Maria
Gombakis Memorial Scholarship donated by her daughter
Demetra Tsesmelis.
Chairperson for the event was scholarship committee
chairman Nick Fyntrilakis. Committee members were Demitri Hatzis, treasurer; Georgia Doulakis, secretary; Evangelia
