ω πασχα το μεγα και ιερωτατον
Η ανάμνηση της ενδόξου Αναστάσεως του Κυρίου μας είναι η αρχαιότερη, πλέον σεβάσμια και
σημαντικότερη εορτή της Εκκλησίας, η οποία ξεκίνησε από την αποστολική περίοδο. Το πάθος του
Χριστού, ο θάνατος Του και η Ανάσταση Του εορτάζονται τόσο κατά τη διάρκεια της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας
όσο και σε κάθε Θεία Λειτουργία. Η αρχαία Εκκλησία χαιρόταν και ευφραινόταν με το γεγονός της
Αναστάσεως. Οι Χριστιανοί συναθροιζόντουσαν κατά την πρώτη ημέρα της εβραϊκής εβδομάδος, την ημέρα
που ο Κύριος αναστήθηκε από τους νεκρούς, διακηρύσσοντας το θάνατό Του και ομολογώντας την
Ανάστασή Του. Αργότερα, αποκάλεσαν αυτή την ημέρα Ημέρα του Κυρίου, Κυριακή (Αποκ. 1:10). Τα
μάτια των ανθρώπων αποβλέπουν πλέον στον “Μέλλοντα αιώνα”, σε μια άλλη καινούρια ημέρα
καταπαύσεως του Θεού, που θα αντικαταστήσει την εβδόμη, όπως η Κυριακή αντικατέστησε το Σάββατο
των Ιουδαίων. Την ημέρα αυτή, κάποιοι πατέρες την ονομάζουν ογδόη, και την ταυτίζουν με την ημέρα του
Κυρίου.
Η κορυφαία αυτή λειτουργική εκδήλωση για την Ανάσταση του Χριστού, επεκτάθηκε από πολύ
νωρίς με τον σκοπό να γίνει ο ιστορικός αντιπροσωπευτικός τύπος της παρουσίασης του μυστηρίου του
Πάσχα. Ετσι λοιπόν γεννήθηκε η «Αγία και Μεγάλη» Εβδομάδα. Τα γεγονότα της δίκης, η σταύρωση, η
ταφή και η ανάσταση του Χριστού, εορταζόντουσαν επισήμως και αντιστοιχούσαν στην ημέρα της
εβδομάδας κατά την οποία είχαν πραγματοποιηθεί.
Η νηστεία έγινε αναπόσπαστο μέρος της τήρησης της πασχαλινής εορτής από την αποστολική κιόλας
περίοδο. Μέχρι τον τέταρτο αιώνα η νηστεία κατέστη παγκόσμια πρακτική που διαρκούσε ολόκληρη την
Αγία και Μεγάλη εβδομάδα. Η αρχική αυτή νηστεία γρήγορα μεγάλωσε ακόμη περισσότερο με την
προσθήκη των σαράντα ημερών της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής, η οποία μας προετοιμάζει να προσεγγίσουμε το
μυστήριο της σωτηρίας μας με συντετριμμένο και ταπεινωμένο πνεύμα.
Το Ιερώτατον Πάσχα μας βοηθά να συνειδητοποιήσουμε την ανυπολόγιστη σημασία της
Αναστάσεως του Χριστού, που καθιστά δυνατή και τη δική μας διάβαση από το θάνατο στη ζωή, και από
τον κόσμο της αμαρτίας στον κόσμο του Θεού. Επομένως καλούμαστε να συμμετάσχουμε σε αυτά τα ιερά
μυστήρια, που λαμβάνουν χώρα κάθε μέρα της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας, με ολόκληρο το σώμα, το μυαλό και
την ψυχή μας. Γεμάτοι με ακαταίσχυντη ελπίδα στο έλεος του Θεού, καλούμαστε σε ένα κοινό σκοπό: να
μετατρέψουμε τόσο τους εαυτούς μας όσο και τον κόσμο γύρω μας, ενθρονίζοντας την Βασιλεία του Θεού
μέσα μας και μέσα στον κόσμο. Ας προσεγγίσουμε λοιπόν αδελφοί τον Νυμφίο υμνόντας Τον, όπως μας
προτρέπει το Απόστιχο του Ορθρου της Μεγάλης Τρίτης:
“ Ὁ Νυμφίος ὁ κάλλει ὡραῖος, παρὰ πάντας ἀνθρώπους, ὁ συγκαλέσας ἡμᾶς, πρὸς ἑστίασιν πνευματικὴν τοῦ
νυμφῶνός σου, τὴν δυσείμονά μου μορφήν, τῶν πταισμάτων ἀπαμφίασον, τῇ μεθέξει τῶν παθημάτων σου, καὶ
στολὴν δόξης κοσμήσας, τῆς σῆς ὡραιότητος, δαιτυμόνα φαιδρὸν ἀνάδειξον, τῆς Βασιλείας σου ὡς
εὔσπλαγχνος ”

A NOTE FROM OUR
PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT
My dearest parishioners,
I hope you are all well and you have recovered from all the snowstorms we have experienced in the
month of February. We have entered March, an important month in our life, when we celebrate the Annunciation of the Theotokos, our Greek Independence day and it is also the beginning of Great Lent, which
is the time of preparation for the feast of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Our community has the opportunity every year to go to the Somerville City Hall and celebrate our Greek
Independence Day. This year it will be on Saturday, March 22nd, at Noon. Let’s all participate to honor
those who have given their lives for our independence and our national identity. It is our obligation to
them. I hope this year most of you will be able to come and enjoy a great program and be proud as Greek
Americans.
The Federation of the Hellenic American Societies of New England every year organizes a parade to
celebrate Greek Independence Day and commemorate the revolution of 1821. This year it will take place
on Sunday April 6th at 1PM. This is another opportunity for us to demonstrate that the Greeks not only
have given many contributions to the world but they still are an important and strong community in Boston
and the United States. Now is the time to be united, participate and show our strength. Without our participation this parade is in danger of being eliminated. This parade costs the City of Boston a lot of money.
Few thousand Greeks marching or attending will not justify the great cost and we may lose an important
vehicle to raise our voices and get attention to our concerns and issues. Please make a great effort to be
there, either marching or attending. Please also try to bring your kids. Teach them how to value and maintain their Greek identity, heritage and values. Teach them to appreciate what our ancestors have given us.
Lead them by example and be there. It is our obligation to our children, family, country and Greek community.
Once again this year, we will have the opportunity to watch and enjoy our Evzones marching in the
parade. They are young men from different Boston communities and some of them are from our church.
They have been practicing every Wednesday for weeks in our church. This year they have been invited to
participate in two more parades, one of which is in Chicago on Sunday, April 14th. Congratulations to these
young men, their families and their organizers.
Mrs. Hatzis, our Greek School Director is organizing our participation in the parade. We will all
march with some uniformity in the appearance and marching formation. We are also looking for individuals
who have traditional costumes in order to participate in the parade. Please contact Mrs. Hatzis. This year,
we will not use a bus, we will all march via foot. Some of you may be disappointed but this is a more appropriate way to participate. More information and details will be provided in the coming weeks. A bus will be
provided for our transportation needs to the parade and back to church.

ΚΑΙ ΣΤΑ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ....
Αγαπητοί μου ενορίτες,
Ελπίζω όλοι να είστε καλά και να έχετε συνέλθει απ΄τις χιονοθύελλες που είχαμε τον Φεβρουάριο.
Μπήκαμε στο Μάρτη, στον σπουδαίο μήνα για τη ζωή μας, που γιορτάζουμε τον Ευαγγελισμό της
Θεοτόκου, την ημέρα της ανεξαρτησίας μας και, επίσης, την αρχή της Μεγ. Τεσσαροκστής, επ’ευκαιρία της
οποίας προετοιμαζόμαστε για την Ανάσταση του Χριστού μας.
Κάθε χρόνο, η κοινότητα μας γιορτάζει στο δημαρχείο του Somerville την ημέρα της ανεξαρτησίας
μας. Φέτος, η γιορτή αυτή, θα γίνει το Σάββατο 22 Μαρτίου, το μεσημέρι. Όλοι μαζί, ας λάβουμε μέρος,
για να τιμήσουμε εκείνους που έδωσαν την ζωή τους για την ελευθερία μας και την εθνική μας ταυτότητα.
Είναι υποχρέωσή μας. Ελπίζω, εφέτος, να είμαστε περισσότεροι, να απολαύσουμε την γιορτή και να
νοιώθουμε περήφανοι ως Ελληνοαμερικανοί.
Η Ομοσπονδία Ελληνικών Σωματείων της Νέας Αγγλίας, κάθε χρόνο, οργανώνει την παρέλαση για
την ημέρα της Ελληνικής ανεξαρτησίας, τιμώντας την επανάσταση του 1821. Εφέτος, η παρέλαση θα γίνει
την Κυριακή, 6 Απριλίου, στις 1:00μ.μ. Μία άλλη ευκαιρία να δείξουμε ότι οι Έλληνες, όχι μόνο έδωσαν
στον κόσμο τα φώτα του πολιτισμού, αλλλά είναι μία μεγάλη δύναμη στην Βοστώνη και κατ’επέκταση,
στην Αμερική. Τώρα είναι η στιγμή να είμαστε ενωμένοι και να λάβουμε μέρος στην ετήσια παρέλαση, η
οποία κοστίζει πολύ στην πολιτεία της Βοστώνης, κι αν δεν είμαστε πολλοί η παρέλαση είναι σε κίνδυνο.
Άλλωστε, έτσι μας δίνεται η ευκαιρία να υψώσουμε τις φωνές μας και να επιστήσουμε την προσοχή στα
προβλήματα και στις ανησυχίες που έχουμε. Σας παρακαλώ, προσπαθήστε να είστε όλοι, παρελαύοντας,
ή παρακολουθώντας την παρέλαση. Φέρτε τα παιδιά μαζί σας. Διδάξετέ τα, να εκτιμούν την Ελληνική
τους ταυτότητα, την κληρονομιά και τα ιδανικά της φυλής μας. Διδάξτε τα, να σέβονται ότι μας έδωσαν οι
πρόγονοί μας. Είναι υποχρέωσή μας να είμαστε παρόντες.
Οι εύζωνοί μας, πάλι θα παρελάσουν. Είναι νέα παιδιά της μείζονος Βοστώνης και μερικά, απ΄την
κοινότητά μας. Κάθε Τετάρτη, για αρκετές εβδομάδες, κάνουν «βήμα» στον προαύλιο χώρο της εκκλησίας
μας. Εφέτος, μάλιστα, θα λάβουν μέρος και σ’άλλες δύο παρελάσεις, εκ των οποίων η μία είναι στο
Σικάγο, την Κυριακή 14 Απριλίου. Συγχαρητήρια σ’αυτούς τους νέους, στις οικογένειές τους καθώς και
στους οργανωτές των.
Η κυρία Χατζή, διευθύντρια του ελληνικού μας σχολείου, θα οργανώσει την δική μας συμμετοχή
στην φετεινή παρέλαση. Όλοι, θα παρελάσουμε ντυμένοι ομοιόμορφα. Χρειαζόμαστε εθελοντές που να
διαθέτουν εθνικές στολές, για την παρέλαση. Επικοινωνήστε με την κ. Χατζή. Δεν θα χρησιμιποιήσουμε
λεωφορείο. Όλοι θα παρελάσουμε με βήμα. Ίσως, μερικοί δυσσαρεστηθούν, αλλά παρέλαση με βήμα,
είναι καλύτερα. Περισσότερες πληροφορίες και λεπτομέρειες, θα ακολουθήσουν στις επόμενες
εβδομάδες. Φυσικά, θα έχουμε λεωφορείο για να πάμε στην παρέλαση και να επιστρέψουμε στην
εκκλησία.

WHAT IS SYMBOLIZED BY THE CANDLE, THE VIGIL LAMP
AND THE INCENSE ?
The Candle
The pure and soft wax candle symbolizes the suppleness of
our soul. As the wax melts quietly and illuminates, so we, by
the grace of God, should "melt" until our last breath, sacrificing for our neighbor. We must illumine and benefit those
around us quietly and without spectacle, for the sake of the
love of Christ.
The wax candle used in churches also symbolizes our "dead"
self. When you put it upright and ignite it in the candelabra,
it symbolizes the Risen Jesus and the confession of our own
resurrection. With candles used in memorials and funerals
and with the kolliva, we confess our faith in the Resurrection
of the Dead and the righteous judgment of all of us, rich,
poor, rulers, servants, when we will stand in front of the
Righteous Judge. With the candle used in the Sacrament of
Baptism we confess the spiritual resurrection of the baptized, and in the sacrament of Matrimony we confess that as
pure candles illuminate, so we by the Grace of God, will
stand as shining examples for our children and will not betray the honesty of Marriage.
One or two candles are enough for the living and the departed souls of our brothers. It is a wrong habit to ignite
many candles that supposedly will save us. Let us be careful
in the way of our life, because even if you light many candles, you will not be saved if you do not live in repentance,
confession, prayer and participation to the Church’s Sacraments.
The Vigil Lamp

the best and cleanest of all, worthy to be offered to the One
and True God. The lighting of the vigil lamp with oil is our
own small sacrifice, showing the gratitude and love that we
owe to God for the great sacrifice he made for us on the
cross of death. We thank Him for his Father's love, the
health he grants us, for our salvation, but above all for all
the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
A vigil candle should burn at all times at the ikonostasi of
our home, to remind us that our spiritual struggle must be
sleepless. We light it in front of the icons of our churches,
the altar, the Cross behind the altar, on the graves of our
beloved departed relatives.
The incense
It is was one of the three gifts offered by the three Magi to
our Lord. It symbolizes our prayer ascending like smoke towards the throne of God. As the incense in contact with the
lit charcoal melts, ascends upwards and spreads its fragrance, so our souls praying warmly and faithfully, should
not stick to earthly things when they worship God.
With the exaltation of our mind and soul upward, our
prayer becomes clearer and our communion with God more
meaningful. Incense carries us toward the One Holy and
True God and emphasizes the presence of the Lord and the
Saints in our lives. When the priest censes the Altar, the incense reminds us of the gifts of the Magi. When he censes
before the Great Entrance then the incense indicates the
balm of Nicodemus. During the Great Entrance it symbolizes
the Holy Spirit .

δούλοι θα σταθούμε έναντι
του Δίκαιου Κριτή. Με την
λαμπάδα στο Μυστήριο του
Βαπτίσματος ομολογούμε την
πνευματική ανάσταση του
Βαπτιζόμενου, ενώ στο
μυστήριο του Γάμου
ομολογούμε ότι όπως
φωτίζουν οι καθαρές
λαμπάδες, έτσι και εμείς με τη
Χάρη του Θεού θα σταθούμε
φωτεινά παραδείγματα των
παιδιών μας και δεν θα
προδώσουμε την τιμιότητα

αλυσίδες με δώδεκα
κουδουνάκια. Συμβολίζουν
τους τέσσερις Ευαγγελιστές
και τους δώδεκα Αποστόλους
αντίστοιχα. Η βάση του
θυμιατού συμβολίζει την
ανθρώπινη φύση του Χριστού
μέσα στα σπλάχνα της
Παναγίας Μητέρας Του. Τα
ανάμενα κάρβουνα
συμβολίζουν το πυρ της
θεότητας. Είναι η βάτος η
φλεγόμενη αλλά μη
κατακαιομένη. Η φωτιά
συμβολίζει και τη Θεία Αγαπη
πού ως φωτιά καίει την
καρδιά του κάθε πιστού.
Λιβανίζουμε στο σπίτι
μας κάθε βράδυ πριν την
προσευχή μας, όταν
διαβάζουμε παράκληση στην
Παναγία και όταν ζυμώνουμε
πρόσφορα. Λιβανίζουμε τις

1. On a sheet of paper, please print clearly the name of the bride (including her maiden

and the names of other people in the photo, if there are any and if you can identify them. Submit
the names and wedding date with a copy of each photo.

2. Scan in the photo using a setting of at least 300 dpi. Email to [email protected] together with the groom’s name, the bride’s full name, the date or approximate date of the wedding,

Lenten Artichoke Soup
Serves 4-6
1 can artichoke hearts in water (14 oz—400 grams)
1 leek chopped
2 carrots (medium size) chopped
1 medium garlic clove chopped
1 big potato chopped or diced
2 celery stalks chopped
½ cup white wine
5 cups water or veggie broth without tomato.
¼ cup lemon juice or as much as you desire
Salt and pepper
Sauté in olive oil chopped leeks, carrots, garlic, potato and celery. After 2 min pour the white wine and
5 minutes later add the 5 cups liquids and the rinsed artichoke hearts. Add salt and pepper. Simmer for
approximately 45 minutes. Purée everything and pass it through a sieve to catch hard parts from artichoke hearts. Return to boil adding the lemon juice and reduce it to desired thickness.

2 μέτρια καρότα κομμένα
1 μέτρια σκελίδα σκόρδου κομμένη
1 μεγάλη πατάτα κομμένη σε κύβους
2 κλωνάρια σέλινο κομμένα
½ φλυτζάνι άσπρο κρασί
5 φλυτζάνια νερό ή ζουμί λαχανικών χωρίς ντομάτα μέσα
Αλάτι και πιπέρι
¼ φλυτζάνι χυμό λεμονιού ή όσο εσείς θἐλετε
Τσιγαρίστε σε λάδι τα κομμένα λαχανικά πράσσο, καρότο, σκόρδο,
σέλινο, πατάτα. Σε 2 λέπτα σβήνω με κρασί. Σε 5 λεπτά προσθέτω τα 5
φλυτζάνια ζουμί και τις ξεπλυμένες καρδιές αγγινάρας, αλάτι και πιπέρι. Μόλις βράσουν τα λαχανικά
για 45 λεπτά περίπου τα πολτοποιώ και περνώ τον πουρέ από σίτα για να κρατηθούν τα σκληρά
κοτσανάκια από τις αγγινάρες. Ξαναβράζω το μίγμα προσθέτοντας τον χυμό του λεμονιού μέχρι να
φτάσει στην επιθυμητή πυκνότητα.

“A Youth Ministry for children between the ages of 7 to 13”
I am writing this article with much disappointment on behalf of our JOY/HOPE ministry. After trying to meet on the last Friday of the month, it seems that families have difficulty attending meetings or have prior commitments. Therefore, I welcome input from
parents on days and times that would work best for them and will discontinue trying for a
monthly meeting. My hope is that we can gather the children as well as their parents at
the Saturday of Lazarus retreat to discuss the future of this very important ministry. We
need the participation of all families to make this work. Children learn from adults and
model that behavior. If as parents we participate in this ministry so will our children. PLEASE REMEMBER
OUR CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE OF OUR BELOVED PARISH.

Σας γράφω αυτό το άρθρο, αρκετά δυσαρεστημένη, εκ μέρους του «Χαρά/Ελπίδα». Μετά απο
προσπάθειες να γίνονται συναντήσεις κάθε τελευταία Παρασκευή του μήνα, φαίνεται πως αρκετές
οικογένειες δεν μπορούν να παρευρίσκονται, για διαφόρους λόγους. Είμαι, όμως διαθετειμένη να
αλλάξουμε τις συναντήσεις, όταν μπορούν οι περισσότεροι. Κι ας μή γίνονται κάθε μήνα. Ελπίζω να
μπορέσουμε να συγκεντρωθουμε, εμείς και τα παιδιά μας, για να ετοιμαστούμε για το Σάββατο του
Λαζάρου, καθώς είναι ένα σπουδαίο καθήκον. Πρέπει όλοι να λάβουμε μέρος. Τα παιδιά διδάσκονται από
τους μεγάλους. Αντιγράφουν την συμπεριφορά των. Αν μπορούμε εμείς, οι γονείς, μπορούν και τα παιδιά
μας. ΠΑΡΑΚΑΛΩ ΝΑ ΘΥΜΑΣΤΕ ΟΤΙ ΤΑ ΠΑΙΔΙΑ ΜΑΣ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΤΟ ΜΕΛΛΟΝ ΤΗΣ ΕΝΟΡΙΑΣ ΜΑΣ.

Greetings from the GOYA!
We are halfway through the school year and our GOYA
continues to be a strong and cohesive group. We meet
every other Monday evening and consistently have eight
to 11 GOYAns attending and involved. At the meetings
GOYAns update each other on business, have a lesson
related to the life of St. Porphyrios, and share fellowship
with each other.

We continue to study the life and teachings of St. Porphyrios. Father Konstantinos recommended the
book, Wounded by Love, and it is exciting that he was elevated from Elder Porphyrios when we started reading the
book in the fall to Saint Porphyrios on Nov 27, 2013. We
are currently reading about how he made his way to
Mount Athos and his teen years there. Our most recent
assignment for the GOYAns was to look up
the apolytikion for their baptismal name. An apolytikion is

μεγάλη επιτυχία. Θα ήθελα να
ευχαριστήσω όλους τους μαγείρους
για το νόστιμο τραπέζι. Επίσης, θα
ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω όλους όσους
προσέφεραν χρήματα ή όμορφα
δώρα. Η φιλόπτωχος κι εγώ,
ευχαριστούμε όλους αυτούς που
ήταν μαζί μας, σάυτό το υπέροχο

Είμαστε στη μέση της
σχολικής χρονιάς, Η GOYA συνεχίζει
να είναι μία δυνατή κι ενωμένη
ομάδα. Οι συναντήσεις μας γίνονται
κάθε Δευτέρα βράδυ, και, 8-11
GOYAns, είναι παρόντες. Στις
συναντήσεις αυτές, γίνεται
ενημέρωση σχετικά με τις εργασίες
του καθενός, και, επίσης, μάθημα για

Μελετούμε πώς ανέβηκε το Άγιο
Όρος και τα εφηβικά του χρόνια, εκεί.
Μαθαίνουμε το ανάλογο απολυτίκιον
για το βαπτιστικό όνομα του καθενός.
Απολυτίκιον, είναι ύμνος για τη ζωή
του κάθε αγίου ή μιας εορτής. Ξέρετε
το δικό μας; Τηε εκκλησίας; Επίσης,
ονομάζεται και τροπάριον.
Η σκέψη μας είναι κοντά στον
Βασίλη Μαρίνο, που έχασε τον
πατέρα του Παναγιώτη, τον
περασμένο Ιανουάριο. Αιωνία του η
μνήμη.
Καθώς αρχίζει η Μ.
Τεσσαροκοστή, θα έχουμε
διδασκαλία της θ. λειτουργίας, από
τον π. Κωνσταντίνο. Σημειώστε στο
οικογενειακό σας ημερολόγιο, όλες
τις ακολουθίες που έρχονται.
Τον Δεκέμβριο, μαζέψαμε
$500.00 απ’τη λαχειοφόρο. Θα τα
χρησιμοποιήσουμε για
φιλανθρωπικούς σκοπούς και για τις
ανάγκες της ομάδας. Ευχαριστούμε
πολύ για την προσφορά σας!
Σημειώστε, επίσης, για την
καλοκαιρινή κατασκήνωση της

special celebrations. First we have
the Annunciation and secondly,
we have Greek Independence day,

year rule of the Ottoman Turks in Greece, Greece
saw unbearable, bitter years. The Ottomans wanted
to take away our language and religion from us, but
they failed! The secret evening schools taught the
children of the enslaved Greeks the history and religion of theιr forefathers under the threats of torture
and pain if they got caught by the Turks.

A NOTE FROM CHOIR
“Α Liturgical Music Ministry of our Parish”
We are now at the time of year,
March and April, when we enter the
period of Great Lent which leads up
to Easter. On a personal level, we
spend time reflecting on ourselves,
how we relate to others, what we eat,
what we can do to better ourselves,
all leading up to our own resurrection
of sorts on Easter, so we can fully embrace the resurrection of Christ. On a
community level and as choir members, we get to sing the music of each
Liturgical season along with Grigorus,
our Chanter. For Lent and Easter we
sing important hymns such as Soson
Kyrie, Ti ipermacho, Epi si cheri, and
finally Christos Anesti. In many ways
this gives us a more in-depth connection to the Liturgy, as well as being in
constant “conversation” with Father
through the litanies and responses. It
stirs many feelings within us that perhaps many of us wouldn’t realize sitting in the pews. This is why one of
the great saints of the Church said
that “singing is praying twice.”
In the last newsletter and with the
liturgical seasons of the Church in
mind, I started a series featuring choir
members so the parishioners can get
acquainted with the new members or
re-acquainted with those who have
been in choir for a number of years.
This time we are featuring Courtney
Rowe, our resident composer in the
choir. I asked Courtney to write a few
words about herself and her family,
and reflect on this upcoming Lent and
Easter season, and what it means to
her.
My name is Courtney Rowe,
and I have been attending Dormition of the Virgin Mary ever
since I moved to the Boston
area to attend graduate school
in 2000. After a year of sitting
in the pews and enjoying the
beautiful chanting, as well as
the resounding harmonies carried down from the loft, I was
moved to join the choir. I had
been singing with various
groups for many years, from
college choirs to local Boston
ensembles, but the chance to
sing about my love for and devotion to God was truly a blessing. The experience was so special to me that I frequently engaged other members of my
family to sing with our choir
when possible. My husband
Ethan and my sisters, Shannon
and Caitlyn, all spent plenty of
time up in the choir loft joining
us in our music-making. Both of
my daughters, Julia (7) and
Madeleine (4) spent their infancy up in the loft with me,
until they were old enough to
join the Sunday School program.
For me, as an Orthodox Christian, Lent and Easter have always been the most important
part of the year. I truly love the
period of Lent and appreciate
the chance for reflection on my
own actions, as well as the focus on my choices and decisions. This is something I have
tried to pass on to my children. Whereas my husband
and I spent many a Lent fasting
from meat and dairy, my children have truly enjoyed the
Lenten Tasks that Miss Eleni
and the other Sunday School
teachers passed out. For each
and every day of Lent, my girls
tried to accomplish their daily
task; everything from reading a
Bible passage to taking on an
extra chore around the house
to enacting a deliberate, unexpected act of kindness towards
someone in our lives. I love the
way that Lent feels like a time
for us all to constantly better
ourselves and constantly strive
to be more like Christ wants us
to be. With every day there is a
chance for reflection and
choice, and our thoughts are
forced away from the daily
grind towards deeper spiritual
matters. What kind act can I
do? What food can I do without
in order to feed my soul instead? Because of the deeply
reflective and abstemious nature of Lent, I find that when
Easter arrives, my mood is truly
exploding with joy, because
Christ is Risen, and because we
are all born anew; after so
much spiritual reflection, we
can start forward once again
with our soul cleansed and
fresh and ready to strive even
more to live according to God's
will.
I think Courtney summed it up beautifully. And of course, what would my
choir articles be without my invitation
to anyone who loves our music and
likes to sing, to join the choir. Join

worshiping through song. It truly is a
special feeling and one I’m very glad I

to visit our church and to see the holy icon of Axion Estin
placed in the “Proskinitari”, which he made with his own
hands along with the other pieces we purchased from him.
1.— The first Greek Orthodox Church in
Somerville first opened its doors
on 5 Bow St., in Union Square, on
August 6, 1916., in a rented hall.
3.— In 1947 it moved to it’s final destination as it
stands today, on the hill of the Elks Estate on
29 Central Street.
2.— In 1923 moved to a newly built
church on 217 Somerville Avenue
4.— Our membership grew by 7% in 2013

The Dormition Church has several Awards available for qualified High School Seniors who are graduating in June and have been accepted to college/university. Applications are available in the office. For

Submission is May 1, 2014. Awards will be given out on Sunday, June 15, 2014.
