Were you there?
Dear fellow Cretans,
Another great Pancretan Association of America national
convention goes down in the history books! It was truly a
great time for all. I know it will be one that my family and
I will never forget, not only for the great honor bestowed
upon me for being elected as President of our great organization, but also because it was a very well organized, coordinated and run convention.
There are several beneficiaries of our conventions: the PAA as
an organization, our members and their families, and our youth.
President Manousakis’ report to the convention body
reflected the accomplishments and hard work he and his
Board have completed and programs that they have begun.
Committee reports from our board members mirrored more
positive steps being taken to strengthen our organization
with their recommendations and proposed resolutions.
Chapters attended the convention in full force and were
represented by delegates who actively participated in our
democratic process by asking questions, attending committee meetings, and ultimately casting their votes on people
and issues that will guide us in the years ahead.
It is with much pride to see so many Cretans represented
like this in one place. While there are many other Greek
American organizations in the US, none comes close to what
the PAA programs and benefits offer. I have attended several
other Greek organizations’ national conventions where attendance ranges between 45-65 people. We boast over 5600
members strong in over 75 chapters nationwide and continue to add new chapters every year! We are currently the
second largest Greek American organization in the United
States and are working our way to becoming Number One!
Our conventions mean so very much to our members
and their families! Delegates came with their families and
extended families, as did new and old officers, guests, and
chapter members across the country. Every two years, our
conventions provide each of us the opportunity to meet new
people, reunite with friends and relatives across the miles,
and bond over a shared heritage. My niece and nephew,
ages 13 and 9, attended their very first PAA convention this
summer. They had a wonderful time, they met several other
young children their age and can’t wait for the next convention. Isn’t this what this is all about anyway?
The PYA attended the convention in record numbers and
their chapters were very well represented. During the day,

the PYA met as a group, shared their reports, proposed and
passed resolutions, and held their elections. I saw Youth
members at all of the events where they danced, sang, and
played lyra and laouto for hours on end. The “after hours”
rooms were not used very much from what I understand
because most the young and old continued their “bonding”
on the beach with vrasto, kakavia and various other Cretan
delicacies while singing rizitika, dancing and playing lyra.
The PAA biennial convention sites are voted on at the
national conventions. The next one will take place in 2013 in
Washington, D.C. Planning has already begun and we know
the hosting chapter and its members will have an amazing
program. Congratulations to Salt Lake City for their selection
as the site of the 2015 convention! What a wonderful opportunity our conventions afford us to see our great country
and to continue to meet with our fellow Cretans.
I want to thank and congratulate this year’s hosting
chapter KPHTH of Clearwater, Florida, the convention Chair
Mr. Iakovo Boutzouka, the entire convention committee, and
the families and members of this chapter that all came together to truly make this a convention to remember. I would
also like to thank all of you again for the support and trust
in the newly elected Board and for electing me president of
this great organization. I commit and promise to you to do
the best that I can do. I will work tirelessly to enhance and
expand the PAA’s already existing programs and promote
new programs to revitalize our chapters and our youth.
Many thanks to outgoing President Theodore Manousaki
and his administration for a job well done over the past two
years. They raised our great organization to a new level and
have instituted new programs that promise to have a positive impact on our organization in the coming years.
I am very honored to have a great group of individuals
with whom to work over these next two years. The newly
elected 42nd PAA Board of Directors has begun identifying and working on the various projects and tasks for their
Board position. We have already held several conference
calls and meetings and are excited to get to work!
I thank you and ask for your assistance and continued support. I look forward to working with all of you and am always
available to you and welcome your ideas and suggestions.

Είσουν εκεί;
Αγαπητοί συμπολίτες Κρητικοί,
Ένα άλλο μεγάλο Πανεθνικό Συμβούλιο της Παγκρητικής
Ένωσης Αμερικής έφτασε στο τέλος του και πέρασε στην
ιστορία! Ήταν πραγματικά μια μεγάλη στιγμή για όλους.
Ήταν ένα συνέδριο το οποίο η οικογένειά μου και εγώ δεν
θα ξεχάσουμε ποτέ, όχι μόνο για τη μεγάλη τιμή που που
μου κάνατε με την εκλογή μου ως Προέδρος της μεγάλης
οργάνωσής μας, αλλά και επειδή ήταν ένα πολύ καλά
οργανωμένο και πολύ καλά συντονισμένο συνέδριο.
Υπάρχουν πολλοί που επωφελήθηκαν από αυτό
το συνέδριο: η ΠΕΑ ως οργάνωση, τα μέλη μας και οι
οικογένειές τους, και της νεολαίας μας.
Η αναφορά του Προέδρου στο συνέδριο, αντικατοπτρίζει
τα επιτεύγματα και τη σκληρή δουλειά που ο ίδιος και το
Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο ολοκληρωσαν κατά τη διάρκεια της
θητείας του και τα προγράμματα που έχουν ξεκινήσει.
Στις αναφορές των μελών του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου
αντανακλώνται η προόδος και τα θετικά βήματα που
γίνονται για την ενίσχυση της οργάνωσης μας με τις
συστάσεις τους και τις προτεινόμενες λύσεις. Οι Συλλόγοι
πήραν μέρος στο συνέδριο και εκπροσωπήθηκαν από τους
αντιπροσώπους τους, συμμετείχαν ενεργά στη δημοκρατική
μας διαδικασία με ερωτήσεις, συμμετέχαν σε συνεδριάσεις
των επιτροπών, και τέλος εμπιστεύτηκαν την ψήφο τους
στους ανθρώπους και τα θέματα που θα μας καθοδηγήσουν
στα επόμενα δύο χρόνια.
Με μεγάλη υπερηφάνεια είδαμε τόσους πολλούς Κρητικούς
σε ένα μέρος. Ενώ υπάρχουν πολλές άλλες Ελληνο-Αμερικανικές
οργανώσεις στις ΗΠΑ, καμία δεν έρχεται πλησιάζει τη δύναμη
και τα οφέλη που προσφέρουν τα προγράμματα της ΠΕΑ. Έχω
παρακολουθήσει αρκετά Παναμερικανικά Συνέδρια άλλων
οργανώσεων με τη συμετοχή τους να κυμαίνεται από 45-65
άτομα. Στην ΠΕΑ υπάρχουν εγγεγραμένα πάνω από 5.600 μέλη,
περισσότεροι από 75 ισχυροί συλλόγοι σε εθνικό επίπεδο και
συνεχίζουμε να προσθέτουμε καινούργιους συλλόγους στο
δυναμικό της οργάνωσης μας κάθε χρόνο.! Αυτή τη στιγμή
είμαστε η δεύτερη μεγαλύτερη Ελληνο-Αμερικανική οργάνωση
στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες και στόχος μας είναι να γίνουμε
νούμερο ‘ΕΝΑ!
Τα Συνέδρια μας σημαίνουν πολύ για τα μέλη μας
και τις οικογένειές τους! Οι αντιπρόσωποι των συλλόγων
ήρθαν με τις οικογένειές τους και τους φίλους τους, όπως
έκαναν παλιά και νέα στελέχη, επισκέπτες, και τα μέλη των
συλλόγων από όλη τη χώρα. Κάθε δύο χρόνια, το Συνέδριο
παρέχει στον καθένα από εμάς την ευκαιρία να συναντήσουν
και να γνωρίσουμε νέους ανθρώπους, να επανενωθούμε με
συγγενείς και φίλους και να ισχυροποιήσουμε το δεσμό με το
κοινό σημείο μας, την Κρητική κληρονομιά. Τα ανίψια μου,
ηλικίας 13 και 9, πήραν μέρος στο πρώτο τους συνέδριο αυτό
το καλοκαίρι. Είχαν μια υπέροχη εβδομάδα, συνάντησαν
πολλά άλλα παιδιά της ηλικίας τους και δεν μπορούν να
περιμένουν για το επόμενο συνέδριο. Αυτό δεν είναι και το
νόημα του συνεδρίου ούτως ή άλλως;
Μέλη της ΠΝΑ παρακολούθησαν αυτό το συνέδριο
σε αριθμούς ρεκόρ και οι συλλόγοι τους είχαν πολύ
καλή εκπροσώπηση. Κατά τη διάρκεια της ημέρας, η
ΠΝΑ συνεδρίασε ως ομάδα, εξέτασαν τις αναφορές τους,
πρότειναν και πέρασαν ψηφίσματα, και πραγματοποίησαν
τις εκλογές τους. Είδα τα μέλη της νεολαίας σε όλες
τις εκδηλώσεις, όπου χόρευαν, τραγουδούσαν, και
έπαιζαν λύρα και λαούτο για ώρες. Τα δωμάτια τους
δεν χρησιμοποιήθηκαν πολύ από ό, τι κατάλαβα γιατί οι
περισσότεροι, μικροί και μεγάλοι συνέχισαν στην παραλία
με βραστό, κακαβιά και διάφορα άλλα κρητικά εδέσματα,
τραγουδώντας ριζίτικα, χορεύοντας και παίζοντας λύρα.
Οι επόμενες πολιτείες που θα γίνουν τα συνέδρια
ψηφίστικαν και το επόμενο θα λάβει μέρος το 2013 στην Washington, DC. Ο σχεδιασμός και η οργάνωση έχει ήδη αρχίσει και
γνωρίζοντας τη φιλοξενία του συλλόγου και των μελών τους
θα έχουμε ένα καταπληκτικό πρόγραμμα. Συγχαρητήρια στο
Σαλτ Λέικ Σίτι για την επιλογή τους ως περιοχή του συνεδρίου
το 2015! Τι θαυμάσια ευκαιρία είναι τα συνέδρια μας. Μας
δίνουν την πολυτέλεια να δούμε τη μεγάλη χώρα μας και να
συνεχίζουμε να συναντιόμαστε με παλιούς φίλους μας.
Θέλω να ευχαριστήσω και να συγχαρώ το σύλλογο
που φιλοξένισε το φετινό συνέδριο «KPHTH» του Clearwater, Florida, τον υπεύθυνο του συνεδρίου κ. Ιάκωβο
Μπούτζουκα, ολόκληρη την επιτροπή του συνεδρίου, και
τις οικογένειες και τα μέλη του συλλόγου που όλοι ήρθαν
μαζί για να κάνουν αυτό το συνέδριο πραγματικά. Θα
ήθελα επίσης να ευχαριστήσω όλους εσάς και πάλι για την
υποστήριξη και την εμπιστοσύνη στο νεοεκλεγέν Διοικητικό
Συμβούλιο και για την εκλογή μου ως Προέδρος αυτού του
μεγάλου οργανισμού. Δεσμεύομαι και υπόσχομαι να κάνω
το καλύτερο που μπορώ. Θα εργαστώ ακούραστα για την
ενίσχυση και την επέκταση ήδη υφιστάμενων προγραμμάτων
της ΠΕΑ και την προώθηση νέων προγραμμάτων για την
αναζωογόνηση των συλλόγων μας και της νεολαίας μας.
Πολλές ευχαριστίες στον απερχόμενο πρόεδρο Θεόδωρο
Μανουσάκη και στο Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο του για το καλό
έργο που έκανε τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια. Έφεραν τη μεγάλη
οργάνωση μας σε ένα νέο επίπεδο και δημιούργησε νέα
προγράμματα που υπόσχονται ότι θα έχουν θετικό αντίκτυπο
για την οργάνωση μας τα επόμενα χρόνια.
Είναι μεγάλη μου τιμή να έχω μια μεγάλη και δυναμική
ομάδα ατόμων που θα εργαστούμε όλοι μαζί ενωμένοι
τα επόμενα δύο χρόνια. Το νέο 42ο Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο
της ΠΕΑ έχει ήδη αρχίσει τον εντοπισμό και την εργασία
για τα διάφορα έργα και προγράμματα. Έχουμε ήδη
πραγματοποιήσει αρκετές τηλεφωνικές συνδιαλέξεις και
συναντήσεων και είμαστε ενθουσιασμένοι και έτοιμοι για
δουλειά μας
Σας ευχαριστώ και ζητώ τη βοήθειά σας και την συνεχή
υποστήριξη. Ανυπομονώ να συνεργαστώ με όλους, χαιρετίζω
τις ιδέες και τις προτάσεις σας και είμαι πάντα στη διάθεσή σας.
Ευχές για ένα καλό καλοκαίρι.

Response to Mr. Fiotodimitrakis’ “Misinformed” Assertions
To the editor of KPHTH:
Mr. Fiotodimitrakis’ letter to the editor in the June issue of KPHTH is a perfect example of commentary that is based on misinformation, hearsay, innuendo and ill will. It is
destructive to the valiant efforts of many individuals who work tirelessly for the good of
the PAA. As a member of this fine association and as former president, I am compelled to
respond to his misinformed assertions.
Mr. Fiotodimitrakis states that the PAA president is attempting to spend PAA funds for
the renovation of the Maliotis Center for the PAA archives. Frankly, I don’t know where
Mr. Fiotodimitrakis obtained his information! In my proposal to the Maliotis board of
directors, reprinted in its entirety in the April issue of KPHTH, I specifically stated that
“Funds will be raised through contributions to the PAA from members and friends. We
currently have several pledges which total in excess of $100,000”. It has never been an
option to use PAA FUNDS nor was it ever stated as such! Furthermore, in my President’s
Report to the General Assembly at the Clearwater Convention, I again stated that “…we
have not yet determined the cost of the project, but I assure you that it will be entirely
funded through private donations…”
Mr. Fiotodimitrakis also states that he is surprised by the attempt of the PAA president
to squander $425,000 of PAA funds for the renovation of the Maliotis space, which, he says,
will be used by the PAA only after special permission is obtained each time the PAA wishes
to use the space. Again, I ask Mr. Fiotodimitrakis for the source of his information, or should
I say the source of his misinformation. In fact, my report clearly states that the PAA will start
negotiating for a long term lease with the Friends of the Maliotis Center, operator of the
facility, and the College at Holy Cross, owner of the property. When a negotiated lease is
ready, it will be subject to the approval of the PAA, and only then will the project go forward.
Mr. Fiotodimitrakis’ letter, whether intentionally or not, is confusing to the reader; he
is co-mingling the PAA Archives location with the PAA Headquarters. He should be aware
that the location of the PAA archives and that of the PAA headquarters are two entirely
different issues! His letter, again, misrepresents the facts when he implies that the PAA
president / board are attempting to change the location of the headquarters. On the first
issue, keeping the PAA Archives at the Maliotis Center was the decision of several PAA
national conventions, and those decisions are being honored. On the second issue, PAA
Headquarters; the PAA national convention voted that New York will be the venue for our
headquarters. According to our PAA Constitution, neither the PAA president nor the board
has the power to change the decisions of the PAA convention.
In conclusion, it is very frustrating and quite disappointing to say the least, that today,
with all the access to instant information, individuals, under the guise of “right to selfexpression” go on the attack without the facts, being ill-informed, and with eyes shut.
Exercising our right to self-expression requires having our facts straight. It serves nothing
to make baseless accusations and irresponsible remarks. Fraternity and brotherhood were
the hallmarks of our organization when it was established 80+ years ago and remain so
today. With that in mind, I ask Mr. Fiotodimitrakis, as I asked all individuals at the Clearwater convention, to become informed and stay informed on what our great association
strives to accomplish with the tireless effort, dedication and good will of so many hard
working individuals who believe in its mission. To do that requires active participation in
PAA activities, not the least of which is to attend PAA national conventions.

The Pancretan Association of America expresses its deepest sorrow for the death of
our member and Great Benefactor of the PAA, Mr. George Varouh (Varouhakis), on July 26,
2011. The deceased was a passionate supporter of our organization, an inspirational leader.
We would like to extend our sympathy to his beloved sons Ari and Ronald Varouh
and his immediate family and friends in the USA and Greece.

Aναφορά 42ου Συνεδρίου, Εκτελεστικής Διευθύντ
Αγαπητοί Συμπατριώτες και Συμπατριώτισσες,
Το 42 συνέδριο της ΠΕΑ, στο Clearwater Florida,
πέρασε στην ιστορία με αλησμόνητες
αναμνήσεις. Απολαύσαμε, μαζί με
παλιές και καινούργιες γνωριμίες, την
Κρητική φιλοξενία και τις εκδηλώσεις
πού είχαν διοργανώσει ό υπεύθυνος
κος Ιάκωβος Μπούτζουκας μαζί
με την επιτροπή τού συνεδρίου.
Συγχαρητήρια και στον κ. Λαμπαθάκη για την
διοργάνωση τού γεύματος προ τιμή των γυναικών της
ΠΕΑ και επίδειξη (μόδας) παραδοσιακών στολών από
διάφορα τμήματα της Ελλάδας.
Οι εργασίες τού συνεδρίου με πρόεδρο τον κ.
Δημήτρη Μαροπουλάκη( James Denny )διεξήχθησαν
κανονικά και στον καθορισμένο χρόνο.
Ψηφίστηκαν τα κάτωθι:
1)H πρόταση των γυναικών, σε κάθε συνέδριο ένα
βράδυ να είναι αφιερωμένο προς τιμή των γυναικών
της ΠΕΑ.
2) Κάθε μήνα στο περιοδικό Κρήτη δύο σελίδες θα
είναι στη διάθεση των γυναικών της ΠΕΑ.
Τα δύο τελευταία χρόνια και για πρώτη φορά
υπηρέτησα στο Διοικητικό συμβούλιο της ΠΕΑ, από
τη θέση της εκτελεστικής διευθύντριας. Eμεινα με τις
καλύτερες εντυπώσεις. Είμαι πράγματι υπερήφανη
για τούς πρωτοπόρους πού οραματίστηκαν και
διοργάνωσαν την ΠΕΑ, την δεύτερη σε μέγεθος
Ελληνική οργάνωση. Επισκέφθηκα τα 7 από τα 8
γυναικεία τμήματα και είχα επικοινωνία με την κάθε
πρόεδρο.
Διαπίστωσα ότι σε κάθε γωνιά της Αμερικής
υπάρχει μια μικρή Κρήτη.
Τα γυναικεία τμήματα ξεκίνησαν την ίδια περίπου

εποχή με την ΠΕΑ.
Οι γυναίκες είναι λιγότερες σε αριθμό, αλλά
πάντοτε δυναμικές, δραστήριες και αφοσιωμένες,
διδάσκουν τα παιδιά τους, ηθικές και χριστιανικές
αξίες, τον πολιτισμό και την παράδοση της Κρήτης.
Το βλέπομαι έμπρακτα σε κάθε συνέδριο και σε
όλες τις Κρητικές εκδηλώσεις.
Σε συνεργασία με τον τρίτο αντιπρόεδρο
υπεύθυνο για τα μέλη της ΠΕΑ και στην προσπάθεια
ν’ αυξηθούν τα μέλη, υιοθετήθηκε ή ιδέα να γίνει
τιμητική διάκριση στο σύλλογο με την μεγαλύτερη
αύξηση μελών για το διάστημα 2009 – 2011.
Σε όλα τα τμήματα ξεκίνησε η προσπάθεια για
την αύξηση μελών με διάφορους τρόπους. Σ’ ένα
σύλλογο έγινε ιδιαίτερη προσπάθεια. Πέρασε η
προεδρία από μητέρα σε κόρη, χρησιμοποίησαν
διάφορες ιδέες και την καινούργια τεχνολογία με
αποτέλεσμα, ν’ αυξήσουν τα μέλη τους 77% . Είναι o
σύλλογος Κρησσών “ΚΡΗΤΗ» Detroit MI. με πρόεδρο
την Μαρία Δήμος.
Από τούς μεικτούς και ανδρών διακρίθηκε ο
σύλλογος Κρητών,” St. Louis Missouri” και από τα
τμήματα της νεολαίας ο σύλλογος «ΜΙΝΩΣ» Clearwater Florida.
Συγχαρητήρια σε όλους για την προσπάθεια τους
κι’ εύχομαι να γίνουν παράδειγμα στους υπόλοιπους
συλλόγους, για το μέλλον.
Συγχαρητήρια στον απερχόμενο πρόεδρο κ. Θ.
Μανουσάκη για τή σωστή συνεργασία του με το
Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο, για τις προσπάθειες του και
τον χρόνο πού διέθεσε για να συνεχίσει η ΠΕΑ την
ανοδική της πορεία.
Στον νεοεκλεγέντα πρόεδρο κ. Γιάννη Μάνο και

Η νεολαία μας, έδωσε δυναμικό παρόν στο συνέδριο
με λύρα, λαούτο, χορό και τραγούδι, από το πρώτο μέχρι
και το τελευταίο βράδυ των εκδηλώσεων.
Δεν παρέλειψαν όμως και τις συναντήσεις τους
για να συζητήσουν τα διοικητικά θέματα πού τούς
απασχολούν και να θέσουν στόχους για το μέλλον.
Συγχαρητήρια στην απερχόμενη, δυναμικά και
δραστήρια πρόεδρο Ελένη Σωπασή και σε όλο το
Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο της νεολαίας.
Στον νεοεκλεγέντα πρόεδρο Χρήστο
Β.Μαραγκουδάκη και όλο το Δ.Συμβούλιο, εύχομαι καλή
δύναμη και συνεργασία για να συνεχίσουν τούς στόχους
τους.
Με νέους όπως εσάς είμαστε σίγουροι για το μέλλον
της ΠΕΑ.
Από τη θέση της εκτελεστικής Διευθύντριας των
γυναικείων τμημάτων, για τα επόμενα δύο χρόνια, θα
συνεχίσω την επικοινωνία και τις επισκέψεις μου με
τα γυναικεία τμήματα και όλες τις γυναίκες της ΠΕΑ.
Θα συνεργαστώ με τον πρόεδρο, όλο το Δ.Σ. και την
νεολαία, θα διαθέσω όσο χρόνο χρειάζεται για να
αντεπεξέλθω στις υποχρεώσεις του αξιώματος μου και
για την Πρόοδο της ΠΕΑ.

42nd PAA National Convention

Hugs, kisses, and squeals of joy
could be heard throughout the lobby of
the luxurious Tradewinds Resort in St.
Petersburg, Florida, as old friends reunited for the 42nd Biennial Convention
of the Pancretan Association of America on June 24, 2011. If you missed

this convention, you missed one of the
best. The week-long convention of the
second largest Greek American organization in the United States was hosted
by the Clearwater, Florida, Pancretan
Association chapter “KPHTH”. Over
60 chapters from around the United
States were represented with delegates, association members, family
and friends totaling approximately 600
attendees. The lobby was abuzz with
activities as guests arrived and registered in the massive flower-decorated
reception area. Each guest received
most-welcomed goodies, which included an insulated shopping bag for
the adults and a backpack for youth
filled with a tin of Cretan items including paximathakia, raki, and sesame
bars. Other gifts included Cretan olive
oil, authentic gazzoza, convention
pins, a shot glass and a T-shirt with the
convention logo. Cretan food products
were gifts from the Manos family.
Three days preceding the business
portion of the convention consisted of
social and cultural events. On Friday,
June 24, a Welcome Night was held
at the Tradewinds Resort. Guests
were greeted with kalitsounia and
raki followed by a buffet dinner. The
musicians from Crete featured worldfamous lyra artist Nikos Zoidakis, who
entertained throughout the convention. He wowed us all with his off-thecuff mandinades and unforgettable
music. New York and Clearwater dance
groups performed. Welcome remarks
were delivered by Convention Chairman James Boutzoukas. Chairpersons
for the evening were Dino Zombanakis
and Joanne Frangedis. Joanne also
provided Cretan mandinades and
the venue on Saturday evening for Cretan Night. The historic St. Petersburg
Coliseum was built in 1924, purchased
by the City of St. Petersburg in 1989
and restored to its original ambiance.
Over 850 persons attended the most
elegant catered sit-down dinner dance.
Table decorations this night and every
night were outstanding. Zoidakis was
in rare form once again, joined by
Cretan musicians George Psaroudakis,
Spyros Pataris, and Nikos Vrettos. We
danced, danced and danced the night
away this night and every night. A cultural presentation of dances by groups
from Florida, California (Minoans), New
York, Pittsburgh and Chicago highlighted the evening. Event chairpersons
were Tom and Maria Kostakis.
On Sunday morning everyone
gathered for Holy Liturgy at the beautiful outdoor St. Haralambos chapel on
the grounds of the Clearwater “Kritiko
Spiti.” An authentic Cretan atmosphere was in the air at the traditional
picnic held at the club. An all-you-caneat buffet of roast lamb, pilafi, salad,
and potatoes was outstanding. Everyone was excited as they viewed—and
style of cooking dates back to the times
of the Minoans with a huge fire pit and
pieces of lamb attached to sticks the
whole circumference of the pit. Cultural events were plentiful as Klydonas
were performed during the picnic. The
event also included dancing to the music of Zoidakis and dance exhibitions by
our remarkable youth from Clearwater
junior and senior groups. Chairpersons for the event were Tony Aloizakis
and Kostandinos Bikakis.
After returning from the picnic, the
events continued at the Tradewinds
with a disco party for the Cretan
Alumni Network. The night included
sharing of photo albums, a slide show,
and the renewal of old friendships with
a lot of laughter and pictures for the
next renunion. Stacy Marakis and her
committee did a great job of organizing
the CAN activities.
The youth went out to the beach
for an incredible game of glow-in-thedark volleyball. Would it surprise you
to know that many of them painted
Greek flags and the island of Crete on
their backs and arms as they listened
to the lastest techno music by DJ Mara-
coordinated volunteers to help prepare
2,000 kalitsounia.
“The South’s finest ballroom” was
many for the first time—the andicrysto
style cooking. If you hung around the
pit long enough, one of the chefs might
sneak you a delicious crisp rib. This
ki while they played on the beach?
On Monday morning the “business” of the PAA began. The delegates
were welcomed at the registration

table by General Secretary Erasmia
Novotny, General Supervisor (now 1st
Vice President) Tom Lantzourakis, and
Editorial Board member Tina Katsounakis. Within a few minutes, everyone
was registered and had their bar-coded
badges. The business sessions began
with a beautiful and moving opening,
which included a flag ceremony by
a color guard from MacDill Air Force
Base in Tampa, the national anthems
of both America and Greece sung by
Dr. Peggi Kokolakis of Clearwater, and
prayers given by Rev. Father Emmanuel
Gianoulis of Crete, Greece.
Monday night featured Theatro
Kritis, which presented “Oneiro Kritis”
(Cretan Dream), a comedy. Following
the theater performance, Pancretan
youth members showcased their talent on lyra, laouto, guitar and song.
We can only hope that a talent scout
was in the audience to tag one of our
home-grown musicians for stardom!

On Tuesday, reports continued,
new business was discussed, and nominations were held for officers, board
members, and district governors. With
few exceptions, all officers ran unopposed and were elected by acclimation. A tremendous show of support
was demonstrated for John Manos,
who was declared the president-elect
of the PAA for the next two years. A
spontaneous “congratulations” erupted
in the room as a line of delegates and
attendees snaked across the convention floor to personally offer their best
wishes to our new president.
Former President Stavros Semanderes presented plans for the Minoan Cultural Village in Crete. Several
delegates gave this project a boost by
pledging their purchase of time share
units at the conclusion of his presentation.
Tuesday’s social activities began
with a Ladies Tribute luncheon and
costume showcase. Women’s Executive Director Maria Stratoudakis
presented awards to the presidents
of women’s chapters of the PAA and
a special plaque to the Detroit Ladies
Chapter for the largest increase in
membership over the past two years.
Traditional Greek costumes were modeled fashion-show style and moderated
by Keith Mastorides of Hellas Dancers.
I haven’t seen that many coins (draped
across the women’s costumes) since
I hit a jackpot in Vegas at the 2005
convention!
Tuesday night was Margaritaville
Night, celebrating Florida’s sunsets and
spirit of fun. We hoped beyond hope
that Jimmy Buffet would be there, too,
but the rumor that he was Cretan and
was planning to perform was just that!
After a buffet dinner (Aha! That’s why
we assumed Jimmy would be there!
They were referring to the food, not
him), which featured whole spit-roasted baby pig, we all spent the rest of the
evening dancing the night away to music provided by Jimmy (and we thought
it was Buffet) Hinton and Debra Rivera.
CAN met and presented a slideshow
of photos from past conventions and
youth conferences. Hmmm…I can’t understand why we all looked 30 pounds
lighter, had so much more (and darker)
hair, and smiled all the time! The photos brought all those memories alive
once more. Chairperson for the night
was local Cretan dentist, Dr. Elefterios
Zervoudakis.
On Wednesday, the business of the
PAA continued. Nick Larigakis, president of the American Hellenic Institute,
addressed the delegation. His remarks
focused on the economic crisis facing
Greece and on the current conditions
in Cyprus. He urged the PAA and its
members to voice their concerns to
their legislators and make their feelings
known about the state of Greeks in
Cyprus.
After a stunning slide show on Salt
Lake City, the delegates unanimously
voted on making it the site of the 2015
PAA Convention.
The Grand Banquet took place
Wednesday evening in the ballroom at
the Tradewinds Resort. His Eminence,
Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta, delivered the invocation. Guest speakers included the Honorable George
Cretekos, vice mayor of Clearwater,
Florida, Theodore Spyropoulos,
president of SAE, Nick Larigakis, AHI
president, Washington, D.C., and James
Boutzoukas, convention chairperson
and KPHTH Chapter president, who
had the dubious honor of introducing
for the last time, Theodore Manousakis, our outgoing president. President
Manousakis addressed the participants
and presented wine, huge bouquets
of roses, and special gifts to the board
members of his administration. Dance
groups from California (Minoans),
Clearwater, and a mixed group from
Chicago, California, Pittsburgh and New
Jersey performed. As always, they
were amazing to watch. Mixed groups
were put together at the convention
to accommodate all dancers who had
costumes but lacked complete dance
groups from their chapters. The coordinated effort of Vasili and Effie Fourakis
and Helene Semanderes to create the
mixed groups proved highly successful
as evidenced during the performances.
It was a delightfully elegant evening, with wonderful food and lovely
decorations. Chairpersons for this
evening where Michael Boutzoukas
and Joseph Kokolakis, who where also
sponsors for the event.
Thursday marked the end of official
convention business with the presentation of a few more committee reports
and a variety of resolutions proposed
and voted on the floor. Ballots were
prepared and the delegates signed in
to cast their votes for the remaining
officers and changes recommended to
the constitution and bylaws.
Farewell Night was highlighted
by the introduction and swearing-
in of the new board. Newly elected
President John Manos introduced the
officers and presented a gift to outgoing President Manousakis. President Manos also presented the local
Clearwater Chapter with a gift from
Crete for their church, an Icon from
the Church of Four Martyrs, which is
located in Rethymno, Crete. Outgoing
PYA president, Eleni Sopasis, honored
former youth presidents, and the new
PYA president, Chris Marangoudakis,
spoke about his goals and introduced
his board. There were youth dance
presentations, music by Zoidakis, a theatre performance of Erotokritos, and
the much-anticipated drawing of the
raffle winners. The grand prize winner
was a long-time member of the KPHTH
Chapter of Clearwater, whose entire
family worked very hard on the first
convention Clearwater hosted 30 years
ago and donated most of the kitchen
appliances to the silogo over the years.
The evening ended with a moving
Rizitiko song tribute in memory of the
legendary Manolis Zervos and performed by Nikos Kastrinakis, Dimitris
Halivelakis, John Kontekakis, George
Marnelakis and Nikos Vamianakis.
Chairpersons for the event were Nick
and Vaso Anton.
In addition to the adult programs, in
which many youth participated, there
was also an array of activities for the
younger members. It was an inspiration to all that so many youth attended.
Approximately half of the convention
population was youth. Their activities
included beach parties, a club night,
pool parties and musical events.
Oh, those fabulous late nights on
the beach. There was music, dancing, lots of wine, raki and food—yes,
food, wine and raki served by the
Marnelakises ‘til it ran dry. We are
still wondering how he got all that raki
and wine to Florida. But the James
Boutzoukas family was right there to
provide endless homemade raki and
wine throughout the convention and
into the wee hours of the morning.
The convention committee and the
people from the Clearwater chapter
were incredible. They thought of everything to make our stay fun, interesting and informative. Organizers of the
convention were: chairman, James
Boutzoukas; co-chairman, Violet Kokolakis; co-chairman, George Mantzaris;
secretary, Mia Boutzoukas; treasurer/
finance co-chair, Michael Boutzoukas;
treasurer/finance co-chair, Michael
Kastrenakes. President Manos summed
it all up: “We cannot thank them
enough. This will truly be another PAA
Convention that will be remembered!”

(Π.Ε.Α.) συνεδρίασε στο πολυτελές

στο Σαιντ Πήτερσμπεργκ στη Φλόριδα
(St. Petersburg, Florida), στις 24
Ιουνίου. Το διαρκείας μιας εβδομάδας,
Συνέδριο της δεύτερης σε δυναμικό
Ελληνοαμερικανικής οργάνωσης στις
Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, διοργανώθηκε
από τον σύλλογο ΚΡΗΤΗ, μέλος της
Πανκρητικής Ένωσης, στην πόλη
Κλιαργουότερ της Φλόριδας (Clearwater, Florida). Εκπροσωπήθηκαν πάνω
από 60 σύλλογοι από όλα τα μέρη των
Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών. Παρευρέθηκαν
συνολικά περίπου 550 άτομα,

Ένωσης, συγγενείς και φίλοι.

Π.Ε.Α. εξελέγη 27ος Πρόεδρος της
οργάνωσης κατόπιν ψηφοφορίας.
Είναι Πρόεδρος της Μπανκ Φαϊνάνσιαλ
(BankFinancial), του μεγαλύτερου σε
μέγεθος Τραπεζικού Οργανισμού του
Ιλλινόι με εξειδίκευση σε εμπορικά
και κτηματομεσιτικά δανειοδοτικά
θέματα στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες.
Είναι επίσης συνιδιοκτήτης αλυσίδας
καταστημάτων διατροφής η οποία
ειδικεύεται, ανάμεσα σε πολλά άλλα
προϊόντα, σε προϊόντα από την Κρήτη.
Ο Κος. Μάνος γεννήθηκε στην Κρήτη,
στο Βιλάνδρεδο Ρεθύμνου, και ήλθε
στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες το 1967.
Είναι απόφοιτος της Αρχιτεκτονικής
Σχολής του Πανεπιστημίου του
Ιλλινόι και δούλεψε στον τομέα της
αρχιτεκτονικής προτού αποφασίσει
να ασχοληθεί με την αγοραπωλησία
εμπορικών και επαγγελματικών
χώρων. Είναι επίσης ενεργό μέλος
της Κοινότητας του Αγ. Δημητρίου
στο Σικάγο έχοντας υπηρετήσει ως
μέλος του Κοινοτικού Συμβουλίου. Έχει
διατελέσει Πρόεδρος της Οργάνωσης
«United Hellenic Voters of America»
στις Η.Π.Α. και μέλος του Συλλόγου
«Bloomingdale Planning and Zoning Board». Ως μέλος της Π.Ε.Α., έχει
υπηρετήσει ως μέλος του Συμβουλίου
του Τμήματος Δωρεών, Αντιπρόεδρος
του «Minoan Village Board», Δεύτερος
Αντιπρόεδρος για δυο περιόδους και
Πρώτος Αντιπρόεδρος για μια περίοδο.
Στο λόγο του για την αποδοχή του
αξιώματος του, ο Κος. Μάνος εστίασε
την προσοχή του σε δυο κύριους
στόχους: « Ο πρώτος στόχος της

Το επιχειρηματικό τμήμα του 42ου
Συνεδρίου της Πανκρητικής Ένωσης
Αμερικής ξεκίνησε τις εργασίες του
την Δευτέρα, 27η Ιουνίου, με την
εναρκτήρια τελετή, η οποία περιέλαβε
αρχικά την τελετή της σημαίας από
ειδικά απεσταλμένο Φρουρό της
Αεροπορικής Βάσης ΜακΝτίλλ στην
Τάμπα (Macdill Air Force Base, Tampa),
στη συνέχεια η Δρ. Πέγκυ Κοκολάκη
από το Κλιαργουότερ απέδωσε τους
εθνικούς ύμνους Αμερικής και Ελλάδας
και κατόπιν την εναρκτήρια προσευχή
απέδωσε η Πατήρ Εμμανουήλ
Γιανούλης από την Κρήτη. Ο Κος.
Τζιμ Ντέννυ εξελέγη ως Πρόεδρος
του Συνεδρίου, ο Κος. Σταύρος
Αντωνακάκης ως Αντιπρόεδρος και η
Κα. Μαρία Σεραφίδη ως Γραμματέας
του Συνεδρίου.
Ο Κος. Θεόδωρος Μανουσάκης,
ο Αποχωρών Πρόεδρος, παρουσίασε
την αναφορά του η οποία κάλυπτε τον
Διοικητικό Τομέα. Έκανε δηλώσεις για
την τρέχουσα κατάσταση της Π.Ε.Α.
υπογράμμισε όσα επιτεύχθηκαν κατά
την διάρκεια της θητείας του στην
Διοίκηση και ευχαρίστησε ιδιαίτερα τα
μέλη του Συμβουλίου του για όλη την
συμπαράσταση και την υποστήριξη
τους.
Οι τέσσερεις ημέρες του
επιχειρηματικού τομέα του
Συνεδρίου περιέλαβαν αναφορές
από τους επικεφαλής των επιτροπών,
καθώς επίσης και προτάσεις για
αποφάσεις και τροποποιήσεις του
καταστατικού. Ο επαγγελματικός
τομέας ολοκληρώθηκε με τις εκλογές
των αξιωματούχων, των μελών του
Συμβουλίου και των Περιφερειακών
Κυβερνητών για την περίοδο 20112013. Εξελέγησαν οι ακόλουθοι:

εκδηλώσεις. Την Παρασκευή, 24
Ιουνίου, έγινε «Η Βραδιά Υποδοχής»
στο Tradewinds Resort. Οι μουσικοί
που προσκλήθηκαν από την Κρήτη
ειδικά για το Συνέδριο, περιελάμβαναν
τον παγκοσμίου φήμης καλλιτέχνη
της λύρας, Νίκο Ζωιδάκη, ο οποίος
διασκέδασε τους προσκεκλημένους
σε όλη την διάρκεια του Συνεδρίου.
Παρουσιάστηκαν παραδοσιακοί χοροί
από την Κρητική Νεολαία του Σικάγο,
τουςι χορευτές «Minoans of Marin
County, California» την χορευτική
ομάδα «KPHTH’s Minos Youth» από
το Σαν Φρανσίσκο και την χορευτική
νεολαία της Νέας Υόρκης. Πάνω
από 850 άτομα παρακολούθησαν το
Κρητική Βράδυ στην ιστορική αίθουσα
«Coliseum Ballroom» στο κέντρο
της πόλης Σαιντ Πήτερσμπεργκ της
Φλόριδας (St. Petersburg, Florida).
Την Κυριακή διοργανώθηκε ένα
παραδοσιακό Κρητικό πίκνικ στο
«Clearwater Cretan Club». Στο πίκνικ
οι παρευρισκόμενοι απέλαυσαν
αντικρυστό αρνί, κλύδωνα και τις
χορευτικες ομάδες της νεολαίας.
Το βράδυ της Δευτέρας το «Θέατρο
Κρήτης» παρουσίασε την κωμωδία
«Όνειρο Κρήτης» (Cretan Dream).
Μετά τη θεατρική παράσταση μέλη της
Πανκρητικής Νεολαίας επέδειξαν το
ταλέντο τους στη λύρα, το λαούτο και
την κιθάρα. Την Τρίτη, οι εκδηλώσεις
περιέλαβαν γεύμα αφιερωμένο στις
Γυναίκες (Ladies Tribute Luncheon)
και έκθεση παραδοσιακών στολών. Η
Διευθύνουσα Σύμβουλος Γυναικείου
Τμήματος επέδωσε βραβεία στα
σωματεία γυναικών της Πανκρητικής
Ένωσης Αμερικής. Στην εκδήλωση αυτή
παρουσιάστηκε εκδήλωση μόδας με
παραδοσιακές Ελληνικές στολές, την
οποία διοργάνωσε η χορευτική ομάδα
«Hellas Dancers» του Κηθ Μαστορίδη.
Το βράδυ της Τρίτης ήταν «Βραδιά
στο Μαργκαρίταβιλλ» (Margaritaville
Night) κατά την οποία απολαύσαμε
το ηλιοβασίλεμα της Φλόριδας. Μετά
από το δείπνο το οποίο περιέλαβε
ενημερωθείτε

όλοι τελείωσαν το βράδυ τους
απολαμβάνοντας την παραλία και
το ηλιοβασίλεμα. Τη χορευτική
μουσική επιμελήθηκαν ο Τζίμμυ
Χίντον και η Ντέμπρα Ριβέρα. Έγινε
συνάντηση της οργάνωσης «Κρητικό
Δίκτυο Αποφοίτων Πανεπιστημίων
(Cretan Alumni Network) κατά την
οποία τα μέλη της παρουσίασαν
σειρά φωτογραφιών από παλαιότερα
Συνέδρια και Συναντήσεις Νεολαίας.
Η Επίσημη Δεξίωση του Συνεδρίου
(The Grand Banquet) έλαβε
χώρα το βράδυ της Τετάρτης στο
Tradewinds Resort. Ο Σεβασμιώτατος
Μητροπολίτης Αλέξιος της Ατλάντα,
εκφώνησε την εναρκτήρια προσευχή.
Σύντομες ομιλίες έγιναν από
διάφορους καλεσμένους, οι οποίοι
περιέλαβαν τον Αξιότιμο Κύριο
Γιώργο Κρητικό, Αντιδήμαρχο της
πόλης Κλιαργουότερ της Φλόριδας,
τον Κο. Νικ Λαριγκάκη, Πρόεδρο του
Αμερικανο-Ελληνικού Ινστιτούτου της
Γουάσινγκτον (AHI, Wash. DC) και τον
Κο. Θεόδωρο Μανουσάκη, Πρόεδρο
της Π.Ε.Α. για την περίοδο 20092011, ο οποίος αφού απευθύνθηκε
στους παρευρισκομένους, απένειμε
αναμνηστικά βραβεία και δώρα στα
μέλη του Συμβουλίου του. Χορευτικές
ομάδες από το Σαν Φρανσίσκο, το
Πίτσμπεργκ και άλλες περιοχές της
Βορείου Αμερικής διασκέδασαν τους
καλεσμένους μαζί με το χορευτικό
συγκρότημα «Δροσουλίτες» της πόλης
Κλιαργουότερ.
Η βραδιά της Πέμπτης, η
Αποχαιρετιστήρια Βραδιά (Farewell
Night), περιέλαβε την παρουσίαση
και ορκωμοσία του καινούργιου
Συμβουλίου. Ο Πρόεδρος Κος.
Ιωάννης Μάνος παρουσίασε
τους Αξιωματούχους και το μέλη
του Συμβουλίου του και επίσης
επέδωσε αποχαιρετιστήριο δώρο
στον αποχωρόντα Πρόεδρο Κο.
Μανουσάκη. Επίσης ο Πρόεδρος
Κος. Μάνος, επέδωσε στο τοπικό
Σωματείο της πόλης Κλιαργουότερ
ένα δώρο από την Κρήτη, μια εικόνα
από την Εκκλησία των Τεσσάρων
Μαρτύρων που βρίσκεται στο
Ρέθυμνο της Κρήτης για την Εκκλησία
τους. Η αποχωρούσα Πρόεδρος της
Πανκρητικής Νεολαίας Αμερικής,
Ελένη Σόπαση, ετίμησε Παλαιότερους
Προέδρους της Νεολαίας και ο νέος
Πρόεδρος της Πανκρητικής Νεολαίας
Αμερικής, Χρήστος Μαρανγκουδάκης
αφού αρχικά μίλησε για τους στόχους
του, παρουσίασε το Συμβούλιό
του. Νεανικές χορευτικές ομάδες
παραλία, μουσικοχορευτική βραδιά,
πάρτυ στην πισίνα και μουσικά
γεγονότα.
Πολιτιστικές εκδηλωσεις
διοργανώθηκαν καθόλη την
διάρκεια του Συνεδρίου και
περιέλαβαν διαλέξεις καθώς επίσης
παρουσίασαν παραδοσιακούς
χορούς, απολαύσαμε μουσική από τον
Ζωιδάκη και η βραδιά ολοκληρώθηκε
με την ανακοίνωση των νικητών της
λαχειοφόρου.
Εκτός από τις εκδηλώσεις για
τους ενήλικες, τις οποίες φυσικά
παρακολούθησαν και πολλοί
νέοι, υπήρξε μια ποικιλία από
δραστηριότητες για τα νεώτερα
σε ηλικία μέλη. Όλες αυτές
οι διοργανώσεις αποτέλεσαν
έμπνευση για όλους τους νέους που
συμμετείχαν. Περίπου οι μισοί από
τους συμμετέχοντες στο Συνέδριο
ήταν νέοι σε ηλικία. Οι εκδηλώσεις
τους περιελάμβαναν πάρτυ στην
μουσικοχορευτικές και θεατρικές
παραστάσεις.
Οι υπεύθυνοι της διοργάνωσης
του Συνεδρίου ήταν: Επικεφαλής της
Διοργάνωσης του Συνεδρίου, Τζέιμς
Μπούτζουκας, Βοηθός Διοργανωτής,
Βάιολετ Κοκολάκη, Βοηθός
Διοργανωτής, Γιώργος Μάντζαρης,
Γραμματέας Μία Μπούτζουκα,
Ταμίας/Υπεύθυνος Οικονομικών,
Μιχαήλ Μπούτζουκας, Ταμίας/

Καστρινάκης. Δεν υπάρχουν λόγια για
να τους ευχαριστήσουμε! Αυτό είναι
πραγματικά ένα Συνέδριο της Π.Ε.Α.
που θα μείνει χαραγμένο στη μνήμη

Western PA Golden Gloves Champion
I witnessed my first boxing
match two years ago. It was the
2009 winter golden gloves semi
finals at the Royal Place restaurant in Pittsburgh. I was watching my great friend and boxing
mentor Andreas Yiannis Kamouyerou hand out the most vicious
beating to an opponent of greater
age and experience. I remember
thinking to myself, “What the hell
did this guy steal from Andreas?”
At the conclusion of the match,
Andreas won a decision victory
and I witnessed him congratulating and hugging his opponent
as if they had been long-time
friends. I thought to myself, “A
minute ago he was battering this
guy and now he is hugging him!”
Many People misjudge boxing
as a blood thirsty, barbaric sport
filled with anger and hatred with
the ultimate goal of eating your
opponent for breakfast. This is a
common perception of the sport which
couldn’t be further from the truth. It
is one of the most disciplined sports in
existence. My initial intentions were
to train for the sole purpose of fitness.
I began going to South Park boxing
gym which is thirty minutes from my
home and where Andreas trained. I
trained steadily four days a week. As
time progressed (after about 7 months)
trainers started to notice my quick
learning capabilities, consistence, and
persistence. They tried to convince
me day after day to enter the golden
gloves and fight. I replied each day that
I was in it just for the training. Eventually their persistence paid off; but my
father, who has a negative opinion of
the sport, strongly objected. I decided
that some choices are best left up to
me and waited for my 18th birthday
to sign the various registrations and
waivers for my fighting papers. Up until
that point, I’ve had a handful of light
sparring matches. After that point, they
became more frequent and intense.
I normally sparred with guys of much
greater experience because I knew that
if I could get used to them, the guys
in my division would seem like nothing. I eventually learned after getting
punched enough times in the face to
keep my hands up and move around
punches. The first time I knocked a
guy out, I felt an adrenaline rush. I
was not so much excited that I had
knocked him out, but more excited that
my hard work was paying off. Eventually I was entered into the sub novice
super heavyweight division, which is
for fighters with under ten fights. I was
the lightest guy in my division weighing
in at 215 pounds. In the weeks coming up to my very first fight, I felt more
nervous and part of me wanted to back
out. But another part of me was saying,
“You’ve been training like hell for
over a year, suck it up and just
win.” I would not let myself lose in
front of my friends and trainers. In
the weeks approaching the fight,
I sparred with Andreas almost
every day. He turned up the heat
every single day, but I fought back
with everything I had each time.
Two days before the fight, the kid
pulled out so I was rescheduled
to fight another kid the following
week. I was relieved to have more
time until my fight because the
closer it came time to fight, the
more nervous I became. Every
second of the whole week, I had
nothing on my mind but the fight.
I found out that I was fighting a
kid that outweighed me by 30
pounds. On fight night I was waiting in the room at the downtown
Sheraton hotel where all the
fighters prepared. I was nervous,
but at the same time I would
under no circumstances accept defeat.
When I stepped into the ring, I couldn’t
believe, after watching so many fights,
that I was the one who was finally up
here. I was scared to death but confident. As soon as the bell rang I forgot
almost everything I practiced during
sparring and basically started brawling
with him. I got hit with hard punches
but I couldn’t feel a thing because of
the adrenaline rushing through me.
After three rounds, I was so winded I
thought that I was going to collapse on
my way back to my corner. When the
referee raised my hand and announced
my name as the victor, I remember
thinking, “Why do they always butcher
my name like that!” What won me the
match was not my conditioning, nor
my power, it was the mentality which
wouldn’t accept defeat. I plan to keep
that mentality with me in any and all
future matches.

District I Conference
The District I conference was held on Saturday, May 28,
at the Minos-Crete club in Springfield, Massachusetts, hosted by the Minos-Crete Youth. The conference opened with
Christos Anesti and a welcome by Governor Demitris Hatzis
followed by a review of conference rules. Votes were cast in
accordance with the PAA Constitution and were verified by
Maria Stratoudakis. Manolis Sifakis was elected chairperson
of the meeting.
A moment of silence was observed in memory of James
Votzakis.
Maria Stratoudakis, PAA women’s executive director, was
introduced and asked to address the assembly. Her message included greetings as well as informing the group that
recognition at the convention will be given to the women’s
chapter that had the greatest percentage of increase in
membership.
Eleni Sopasis, PYA president, was introduced. Her message was that the youth of the PAA look to adults for support. She asked for everyone to support youth dances and
the national raffle which will be giving 10% of the proceeds
to the Leukemia Lymphoma society.
The minutes of the June 6, 2009, District Conference were read and accepted with corrections. The minutes

of the September 29, 2009, Special District Conference
were read and accepted with corrections. Governor Hatzis
presented his report followed by reports from Lt. Governor
Hope Foudoulakis, Treasurer Evangelia Papamarkakis, and
Secretary Tina Katsounakis. Committee reports were given
as follows: Auditing Committee, Kostas Pitarides; Scholarship Committee, George Geraniotis, Parade Committee,
Manolis Sifakis; Governor’s Ball Committee, Demitris Hatzis.
Chapter presidents’ reports consisting of activities and
membership during the past two years were presented as
follows: Cretan Ladies Society, “Proodos,” Springfield, MA,
Evangelia Papamarkakis; “Minos-Crete Youth,” Springfield,
MA, Alex Hatzis: Cretans of Connecticut, “Eleftherios
Venizelos,” Christina Smith; “Minos-Crete”, Springfield, MA,
Kostas Pitaridis; “Akrotiri”, Lowell, MA, Dimitrios Matheos;
“Rathamanthus Ide,” Boston, MA, Lefteris Travayiakis.
District bylaws were discussed. It was voted on and
passed that the District Bylaws Committee is to draft a
document. This document will then be sent to the district
board and to each chapter for a general assembly for review.
Modifications from each chapter will then be sent back to
the district. The district will compile and create a new document. The revised document will then be sent back to the

chapters for approval by the boards. If the document is
ratified by a two-thirds majority of the district chapters,
it will ultimately be sent to the PAA board for approval.
The Election Committee consisted of Christina Smith,
Alex Hatzis and Maria Binieris.
Elections for district officers was held with the following results: Demitris Hatzis, District I governor; George
Geraniotis, lieutenant governor; Evangelia Papamarkakis, treasurer; Tina Katsounakis, secretary; Scholarship
Committee, George Geraniotis, Dimitrios Matheos,
Jon Binieris and Besi Mavredakis; Auditing Committee,
Dimitrios Matheos, Kostas Pitaridis, and Christina Smith;

A discussion of the Maliotis Center archives took
place. The next district conference will be hosted by
“Megalonisos” of Boston, MA.
Minos-Crete Youth was thanked for their hospitality,
which continued with a luncheon prepared by members
and served to the delegation. The youth, in short time,
prepared for their very successful dance that evening
featuring the Pandermakia band from Crete.
District V Conference
District V of the Pancretan Association of America
held its annual conference
at St. Demetrios Church in
Seattle in late May, hosted
by the local Kritikos Pelagos
Chapter. Events included
meetings, a glendi with
musicians direct from Hania,
a memorial service for those
who lost their lives in the
Battle of Crete 70 years ago,
and an open lecture on the
genetic make-up of Cretans.

‘Opa!’
We Are
All Greek!

We bet most readers recall the
2002 sleeper hit film, “My Big Fat
Greek Wedding,” written by and starring Nia Vardalos. The movie centered
on Fotoula “Toula” Portokalou, a
middle-class Greek American woman
going through an early mid-life crisis
because she had not yet married. As
the story goes, Toula then falls in love
with a non-Greek, (e.g., White AngloSaxon Protestant) by the name of Ian
Miller. Although the movie was set in
Chicago it was shot largely in Toronto,
where we were living at the time, so
the scenes of Greektown on Danforth
Avenue hold special meaning for us.
In a very memorable scene near
the end of the film, when Toula and Ian
celebrate their big fat Greek wedding
with their respective families, Toula’s

father, Gus, finally comes around to accept the “mixed” marriage. He shares
the following ageless and very touching
Greek wisdom with all of the guests at
the reception:
“You know, the root of the word
Miller is a Greek word. Miller comes
from the Greek word, ‘milo,’ which is
mean ‘apple,’ so there you go. As many
of you know, our name, Portokalos, is
come from the Greek word ‘portokali,’
which mean ‘orange.’ So, okay? Here
tonight, we have apple and orange. We
all different, but in the end, we all fruit.”
How simple-sounding, yet so profound and true: we are all different, but
in the end, we are all fruit. Of course,
you don’t have to be of Greek heritage
to appreciate this bit of philosophy. Nor
do you have to be of Greek heritage
to appreciate -- and resonate with -the meaningful story depicted in the
movie. In fact, it is because the movie
reflects so many of our own families
and personal lives, Greek or not, that
makes its story arc so compelling and
memorable. We can relate to Toula, to
her entire family, and to her situation
precisely because it mirrors so much of
us and our lives.
Against this backdrop, of course,
still lies the very obvious and hard-toforget “Greek” theme. To the Windex
bottle-toting Gus, for example, all English words can be traced to their Greek
roots. While humorous when considered in a movie script, the implications
of this part of the storyline are not as
far-fetched as some may think. In this
regard, the loan given by the Greeks to

the English language is enormous. The
expression, “It’s all Greek to me,” is not
really that far off the mark, since there
are more than 40,000 Greek words in
use today in the English language.
The vast contributions of Greece
to Western civilization don’t stop with
language by any means. Indeed, it was
the famous English Romantic poet,
Percy Bysshe Shelley, regarded as one
of the finest lyric poets in the English
language, who keenly observed: “We
are all Greeks. Our laws, our literature,
our religion, our arts have their root in
Greece.” Moreover, it has been recognized through the ages that to be Greek
is not necessarily the result of heritage,
birthright or birthplace. For example,
the Athenian speechwriter, Isocrates,
who was a contemporary of Socrates,
espoused that “the word ‘Greek’ is not
so much a term of birth as it is of mentality, and is applied to a common culture rather than of common descent.”
Likewise, the modern Greek poet and
winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature
in 1979, Odysseas Elytis, said that, “To
be Greek means to feel and react in a
certain way, nothing else; whether one
is young or old, born here or there.”
By implication, to be Greek or
to manifest one’s “Greekness” is a
potentiality that exists in all of us. We
believe this human capacity is inherent in everyone, even if it appears to
be dormant, waiting to be unleashed
in some way. In other words, there is
an inner “Zorba the Greek” in each and
every one of us, waiting to dance on
the beach of life, eager to embrace the
“full catastrophe” of living, and determined to experience all of life to the
fullest, with enthusiasm and meaning.
Like the Zorba character, The Huffington Post’s own Arianna Huffington,
who we all know is of Greek heritage,
has always embraced life with unparalleled enthusiasm and meaning. When
the going gets tough, she accepts the
challenge before her as if the mighty
Zeus himself had instructed her to do
so. To be sure, she is much more than a
self-described ordinary “Greek peasant
girl,” and she believes that she is part
Cassandra, the archetypal character
from Greek mythology of someone
with prophetic insight. In a way, be-

ing Cassandra is just another way for
Huffington to manifest or realize her
inner “Greekness.” Indeed, by her own
admission, she has referred with great
pride to her “Greekness” as an asset
on numerous occasions and has relied
upon this valuable asset frequently in
her personal and professional life.
It is partly because we believe so
strongly that we are all Greek that we
developed The OPA! Waylifestyle. This
new paradigm or mental model offers
the antidote to the stressful, unhappy,
unhealthy, disconnected lives many
people around the world are experiencing today. The wisdom and practical
advice that are the foundation of this
philosophy of living can be applied both
to our personal lives and our work lives.
Thousands of years ago, philosophers like Heraclitus, Hippocrates,
Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and others
had grappled with the existential question: “How do we live the good life?”
Fast-forward to the present day, and
we find the Greeks living in so-called
postmodern society, along with those
of us living in similar circumstances,
asking the very same question. It is as if
we have “progressed” and “regressed”
at the same time.
Today the tiny country Greece and
her citizens are faced with formidable
challenges and, once again, find themselves rocking the cradle of Western
civilization and leading the way out of
the abyss as they seek to reinvent our
common notions of democracy. Likewise, Greece and her citizens are now
being forced to reassess what really
matters in life. Not unlike other nations in the contemporary era, today’s
Greece and Greeks must reengage with
some traditional values and customs
from which they had become estranged in their hurried quest to “modernize” at any and all costs. According
to traditional Greek village wisdom,
“The truth and the olive oil always
come to the top.” To quote again the
Greek philosopher from “My Big Fat
Greek Wedding,” Gus: “We all different,
but in the end, we all fruit.”
And to that we add, we are all
Greek. OPA!

Chris Vasilios Marangoudakis, son of Vasili and Athena
Marangoudakis, graduated
in May 2011 from Illinois Institute of Technology with a
bachelor degree in industrial
technology. He will be pursuing a career in construction management. After
graduating from Manhasset
High School, Chris was accepted to Queens College
and later transferred to IIT.
He has been a dedicated
member of his youth group
“Labrys” where he held the
positions of board member, vice President, and
president for two terms. He has also been a member of the
“Labrys” dance group for 11 years. While away at college,
he was a volunteer dance teacher for 1 1/2 years. For the
past 2 years Chris held the position of PYA cultural chair and
was elected PYA president at the 2011 convention in Clearwater, Florida.

of Helen Ranney. Plans were
finalized for our
2nd annual Tiger
game fundraiser.

PAA convention in
Florida and elected Helen Ranney
as our delegate
with all 3 of our
allocated votes.
We began brainstorming philanthropic projects
for the upcoming holidays and
several possible
events for our members to gather in the coming months.
After the conclusion of our meeting, our hostess, Helen,
arranged for nationally renown chef, George Vutetakis, to
join us. He shared his insights on the health benefits of a
Cretan vegetarian diet and stories of his food and cooking
experiences with his family in Crete. He then proceeded to
demonstrate his skills by preparing two delicious dishes for
our members to sample.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Diana Verykokakis,
Erasmia Novotny, and Helen Ranney on the recent passing of
their son and brother, and our dear friend, Michael Vlastos.
He will be missed by everyone in our organization and by all
in the Detroit Cretan community.
Congratulations to all of the new officers elected at the
recent Pancretan National Convention, especially all those
from our 4th District including National President, John
Manos, 3rd Vice President, Niko Verikakis, , District Governor, George Stefanakis, PEF Chair, George Papadantonakis,
PAA Foundation, Inc Chair, John Marakis, IT Chair, Stacy
Marakis, and PYA Fundraising Chair Andreanna Masters, as
well as several committee members. Even more congratulations to our own Ladies Society members General Secretary,

Νέο Διετές Συμβούλιο Του Συλλόγου ‘Ψηλορείτης’
Τη Παρασκευή της 6ης Μαΐου, και στο χώρο του
Συλλόγου «Ψηλορείτης», τελέστηκε έκτακτα η εκλογή του
νέου Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου, το οποίο θα διευθύνει τα
καθήκοντά του για τη συνέχιση της διετίας.
Με την ενεργή παρουσία της ολομέλειας του Συλλόγου
ψηφίστηκε ως νέος πρόεδρος του Συλλόγου ο Ιωάννης
Μαράκης, ο οποίος και δέχτηκε με μεγάλη του τιμή
και ευχαρίστηση. Ακολούθως, για την εκπλήρωση των
καθηκόντων των υπολοίπων θέσεων του πενταμελές
συμβουλίου, ψηφίστηκαν τα παρακάτω ονόματα: ο
Κωνσταντίνος Μανουσακάκης ως αντιπρόεδρος του
Συλλόγου, η κα. Βαρβάρα Πατεράκη ως παραμένων
ταμίας, ο Σταύρος Μελαμπιώτης ως γραμματέας, ενώ
ο Πολυχρόνης Αποστολάκης ως βοηθός γραμματέα.

for him. He loved everyone at the Cretan Club, and looked
forward to going on Friday nights when he could to help out
and visit with everyone there. He loved them as much as
they loved him.
He was devoted to his mother, Diana, and she to him.
There is no one that will miss him more than his mom. We
wish his mother, Diana Verykokakis and his sisters; Helen
Ranney and Erasmia Novotny our deepest condolences.
May his memory and smile be eternal.

On May 7th the Miami Chapter hosted its annual Kritiko
Horo and Glendi and what a glendi it was! In the spirit
of Cretan
hospitality, our dance
committee,
volunteers
and dance
chair, silogo
VP, Dr. George
Georgakakis ensured
that the event maintained the essence of a homecoming,
and with that purpose in mind, the silogo, as one family,
opened their arms to a full house of family and friends as
they arrived at the St. Demetrios Community Center in Ft.

ladies…it was Mother’s Day weekend after all and the ladies
were honored all evening long.
Thanks to the successful efforts of George Georgakakis, Billy
Skoundridakis,
Anastasia
KastrenakesMerkel,
Antonis
Tomadakis
and George
Stefanakis
in managing reservations and guest seating. Our ticket table
team, Chrisa Tatakis, Helen Stefanakis and Emmy Louvaris
were ready to assist guests as they arrived. Guests were
swiftly escorted to their table by one of our fine Cretan gentlemen - Billy Skoundridakis, George Stratoudakis or George
Stefanakis. We thank them all for a job well done!.
As guests were escorted to their parea they could not
help but
notice the
beautiful
decorations.
Emmy Louvaris designed
brilliant Minoan murals,
which hung
on either side
of the stage
and dressed
the tables with assorted trinkets reminiscent of our beautiful island. There was a lovely Orchid centerpiece, which
was the prize for the highest bidder at each table. The funds
collected from this auction will be donated to a charity. In
addition to the Orchid Auction, Dimitra Karachalias and her
daughter Sophia offered our guests the opportunity to win
some wonderful raffle prizes. Lucky winners went home with
baskets of Cretan treats, tsikoudia, premium olive oil and
an iPod Touch. We thank Emmy and her decorating team:
Anna Maria Stefanakis, Arielle & Elenie Louvaris and Sophia
Karachalias. We also thank Dimitra & Sophia Karachalias for
their successful raffle selling efforts. We happily recognize
the Kagiadakis family from Villa Rose, the Loupasakis family
from KretAdelphia and all of our donors for their generous
support and contributions.
Our own up and coming lyra talent and new board
member, Michael Stefanakis (pictured) joined in with
Christos Fasarakis on the lyra and Grigoris Maouselis on
the lauto accompanied by Jordan Elrod on the ntaouli and

toumpeleki to lure guests to
the dance floor with their
beautiful Cretan music. DJ
Jimmy Phenomena offered a
variety of entertaining Greek
music for everyone to enjoy.
The excitement intensified
when our dance group came
out to perform their Cretan
suite directed by their dance
teacher, Demitra Protopapadakis.
Our talented
Cretan dancers
in the senior
group are: Arielle
Louvaris, Yiorgos
and Kyriakos Tomadakis, George
Protopapadakis
and Nicholas
Stratoudakis.
In the junior
group we have
Dimitri Stratoudakis, Paco &
Yiorgo Montamarta, Sophia
& Victoria Roussakis, George &
Sotiri Vasilakis
and Dimitri Halivelakis. We thank
Demitra, the children and their families for helping preserve the beauty of
our dance history.
There was a whirlwind of activity
in the kitchen during our dance directed by George Zachariadis and assisted
by Antonis Tomadakis, Teddy Karachalias, (pictured here with George
Stratoudakis) Jr., Alex Sofianos and
Dimitra Karachalias, which produced a
delicious menu.
We started with tyropitakia,
loukaniko and keftedakia and a Greek
salad. This was followed by savory
pork and chicken souvlakia, grilled by
Ken Merkelakis and George Stylianoudakis (pictured here), served with
roasted Greek potatoes with gourmet
Greek fasolakia.
To top off the meal we had
delicious karidopita made by Cleo
Georgakakis and crisp kserotygana
made by Maria Kastrenakes. But
there was more…. to welcome the
morning hours, Dimitra Karachalias lead the kitchen team and
prepared a delicious vrasto…it was
heaven! What a blessing to have
such talent in our kitchen! Thank
you!
When the parea was taking
a break from all of the dancing they would move to the bar
where they filled
their glasses
and engaged in
lively conversation. They were
greeted and well
tended to by the
bar chairperson
Mano Vasilakis
and his assistant
Manny Halivelakis. A thank you
to Mano for donating all of the
water to us for the dance and thanks also to all of the other
fellas we caught back there helping serve that night…at least
that’s what they said they were doing!

Get Well Wishes
Hospitality and Welfare Chair, Mrs. Maria Kastrenakes
presented a thank you note she received from John Cheretis
for the silogo. He and his family thanked the silogo for the
donation we made to St. George for a prayer on his behalf
during his recent hospitalization and recovery. Mr. Cheretis
is happy to report that he is recovering nicely.
Condolences
It is with a heavy heart that we post the passing of the
following friends and loved ones. We extend our deepest
sympathies, love and prayers to their families. May the
memory of their loved ones be eternal:
Kostas Kagiadakis, former vice president, board member, long time silogo member and supporter passed away
this past May. Mr. Kagiadakis, his wife Marika and family
supported all silogo projects and made generous donations
toward all of our projects and causes from their restaurant
and grocery store, Villa Rose. He and his family were also
faithful and dedicated members of the St George Greek
Orthodox Community. It is with great sadness we make this
announcement. A donation was made in Kostas’s memory
to St. George in lieu of flowers.
In May, Sophia Pendarakis passed away in Pembroke
Pines, Florida. She and her late husband were long time
members of the silogo. The Pendarakis family was active
in the silogo, their church and community. A donation in
Sophia’s memory was sent to St. George in lieu of flowers.
Manolis Keffaloyiannis, brother-in-law to long time silogo
member John Cheretis recently passed away in Greece. A
card on behalf of our silogo was sent to the Cheretis family.
In May Christos Revelakis, Sophia Saridakis’ sister’s husband passed away in Canada. A card on behalf of the silogo
was sent the Revelakis and Saridakis family.
We are sad to report the passing of our beloved member
in Crete this past June, Reverend Father Michael Kamaritis. Mrs. Kastrenakes called the family in Crete and offered
condolences on behalf of the silogo. A memorial for Father
Michael was held at St George Greek Orthodox Church on
24 July.
General Assembly
On June 5th the silogo held its last general assembly

for the year. Lead by president Katerina Theodorou, the
silogo discussed the success of the dance and the plans for
the new silogo year. President Theodorou gave a heartfelt
farewell to her role as president and as a board member to
prepare for the birth of her first child in the fall, a little boy!
We rejoice with Katerina in this good news and we are sad
to see her take her leave of the board but she promises to
remain active and supportive of the silogo all the same. We
are honored to announce the newly elected officers and
board for 2011 - 2013: President: George Georgakakis. Vice
President: Anastasia Kastrenakes-Merkel. Treasurer: George
Stratoudakis. General Secretary: Antonis Tomadakis. Board
Members: Alekos Sofianos, Andreas Tzanakakis, Antonis

του κ. Κώστα και Σούζης Περράκη. Των ευχόμεθα να τους
ζήσουν οι νεόνυφοι και στα άλλα κορίτσια με το καλό.
