He then became a place of reunion for those who had been saved through Him and within Him. The Church, therefore, as the body of Christ, reflects this union of the faithful through the Holy Spirit with the incarnate Lord. The formation of every local Church and parish has one goal: the deification of its members. This is the same goal which has existed unchanged and firm for two thousand years. Altering this goal would automatically mean the alienation of the church, and its falling into a collective grouping, like a club or association. The parish is built up and enlivened by the worship of the Church, the communal table and the common cup. The members of the parish, both priests and lay people, are required to lift each other’s burden and move ahead in the challenges of life using the prayer of their parish as consolation. When the members are unified then the parish can truly engage in Christian works, offering love and support to anyone who is in need. It is then that the vision of every parish comes true, which is to emulate the Kingdom of God, and become a culture overflowing with joy, peace and love, increasing in the Christian faith through the teachings of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. As long as the parish takes care of «any of these my brothers the least», then the Grace and the Blessing of God firms its people and multiplies its fruits. Then they hear the words of Christ: «Come you, the blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you...for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink....» (Matt. 25:34-35). The interest shown by the Lord to provide food for the people during the miracle of the multiplication of the five loaves, highlights His concern about our bodily needs. The responsibility that Christ delegated to His Disciples for the care of the bodily needs of His followers, is a responsibility that has trickled down through the centuries to all of us who comprise the members of Christ’s Church and are the successors of the Holy Disciples, both clergy and laity. Our Lord is asking us to provide spiritual food to satiate the spiritual hunger of those around us, spiritual food which can be given through the example of our own lives. However He also asks us to provide for their human needs through our Christian Stewardship, by donating our time and our talents to our Church and our community. Stewardship is caring for the needs of others, is offering one’s self to God, is what a per- son does after saying “I believe…” as proof of that belief. Stewardship is devotion and service to God and His Church as persons, as families, as a parish, as a Metropolis, as a National Orthodox Church, in exactly the same way that Christ offered Himself to us. My brothers and sisters in Christ, if we only ask ourselves the same way the Psalmist does: “What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me?” (Psalm. 116:12) then the answer should be: “I will offer Him my Talent, and my Time in the Ministry of His Church and His people”. Therefore, let us start from today to think how we will organize the feeding of the hungry, of those who have lost everything in life. This is the “way of the parish” through which the community of its members becomes sanctified. This is the “way” which I invite you all to walk together from now on, so that we attract upon us the Divine Grace, Mercy and the Blessings of the Lord. Ετσι, η Εκκλησία που είναι το «σώμα του Χριστού», αντικατοπτρίζει την διά του Αγίου Πνεύματος ένωση και ενότητα των πιστών με την θεωμένη ανθρωπότητα του Χριστού. Η συγκρότηση της κάθε τοπικής Εκκλησίας, της κάθε ενορίας, γίνεται με ένα και μοναδικό στόχο: την θέωση των μελών της. Αυτός ο στόχος παραμένει εδώ και δυό χιλιάδες χρόνια αμετάθετος και αμετάβλητος. Η μεταβολή του στόχου σημαίνει αυτόματα και αλλοτρίωση της ενορίας και έκπτωσή της σε μιά κοσμική ομαδοποίηση (σύλλογο, σωματείο κ.α.), που χάνει πιά τον χαρακτήρα της Εκκλησίας. Η ενορία οικοδομείται, ζωογονείται και κατευθύνεται από τη λατρεία της Εκκλησίας, την κοινή τράπεζα και το κοινό ποτήριο στον Ενοριακό Ναό. Και οι άνθρωποί της, κλήρος και λαός, οφείλοντας να βαστάζουν «αλλήλων τα βάρη», πορεύονται στα βάσανα και τους καημούς του κόσμου τούτου, έχοντας παρηγοριά και ελπίδα την ευχαριστιακή προσευχή της κοινότητας τους. Τότε η ενορία ποιεί πραγματικό έργο, με πορεία από τα πνευματικά στα πρακτικά-υλικά- προσφέροντας τη βοήθειά της στο πλήρωμά της, με χρέος και αγάπη από κάθε μέλος της εκκλησίας προς κάθε πρόσωπο που έχει ανάγκη. Τότε γίνεται πράξη και το κοινό όραμα κάθε ενοριακής συνάξεως που καλείται να μεταμορφωθεί σε εικόνα της Βασιλείας των Ουρανών, να γίνει μιά ενορία που ξεχυλίζει από χαρά, ειρήνη και αγάπη, και αυξάνεται στην Πίστη μέσα από τη διδασκαλία της Μίας, Αγίας, Καθολικής και Αποστολικής Εκκλησίας. Εφ’ όσον λοιπόν δίνεται βοήθεια σε «ενί τούτων των αδελφών μου των ελαχίστων», η χάρις και η ευλογία του Θεού στερεώνει τους ανθρώπους της και αυξάνει τους καρπούς της. Τότε ακούγονται τα λόγια του Χριστού: «δεύτε οι ευλογημένοι του Πατρός μου, κληρονομήσατε την ητοιμασμένην υμίν βασιλείαν από καταβολής κόσμου. Επείνασα γαρ και εδώκατέ μοι φαγείν, εδίψησα και εποτίσατέ με...» (Ματθ. 25:34). Το ενδιαφέρον του Χριστού για την διατροφή του όχλου στην περίπτωση του θαύματος του πολλαπλασιασμού των πέντε άρτων, αποδεικνύει το πόσο Εκείνος νοιάζεται για τα βιοτικά προβλήματα των ανθρώπων. Η εντολή που έδωσε στους μαθητές Του να διαθρέψουν τον κόσμο, συνιστά μία ευθύνη η οποία δια μέσου των αιώνων επεκτείνεται και σε μας που αποτελούμε τα σημερινά μέλη της εκκλησίας του Χριστού, που είμαστε οι διάδοχοι των μαθητών Του, λαός και κλήρος μαζί. Καλούμαστε από τον Κύριο να δώσουμε στις πεινασμένες μάζες της εποχής μας, πνευματική τροφή μέσα από το παράδειγμα της αγιασμένης μας ζωής, αλλά και σωματική τροφή και ενίσχυση μέσα από την διακονία μας, την προσφορά του χρόνου μας και του ιδιαίτερου «τάλαντου» που έχει ο καθένας μας στην ζωή της ενορίας μας. Διακονία είναι το να ενδιαφερόμαστε γιά τις ανάγκες των άλλων, το να προσφέρουμε τον εαυτό μας στην υπηρεσία του Θεού μέσα από την οικογένεια μας, την ενορία μας, την Μητρόπολη μας, την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία μας, έτσι όπως προσφέρεται και Εκείνος σε μας. Ας αναρωτηθούμε και εμείς όπως ο Ψαλμωδός: «Τι θα ανταποδώσω στον Κύριο έναντι όσων μου εχάρισε;» (Ψαλ. 115:3), και ας αρχίσουμε από σήμερα να σκεφτόμαστε πως θα οργανώσουμε το έργο της διατροφής των πεινασμένων, εκείνων που δεν έχουν να φάνε. Αυτός είναι ο «τρόπος» της Ενορίας, με τον οποίο αγιάζεται το ευσεβές άθροισμα των προσώπων της. Αυτός είναι ο «τρόπος» με τον οποίο σας καλώ από δω και πέρα να πορευθούμε μέσα στον αιώνιο χρόνο, γιά να επισύρουμε πάνω μας το Θείο έλεος, την Χάρη και τον ποθούμενο αγιασμό. Κωνσταντίνος Μανέτας A NOTE FROM OUR PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT My dearest Parishioners, I would like to welcome Father Konstantino, Presbytera Anna and all of you back. I hope you all had a healthy, very relaxing and enjoyable summer and you are returning with a lot of energy for the start of another ecclesiastical year. The summer went by very quickly. We celebrated our beloved church’s name day, which is the Feast of the Dormition of Theotokos on the eve of August 14th with a Great Vespers. The service was officiated by his Eminence, Metropolitan Methodios of Boston and assisted by many area priests, in a very crowded church filled with dignitaries and faithful. A wonderful reception was given by the Ladies of St. Catherine Philoptochos, in the Community Hall. On Thursday, August 15th after the Divine Liturgy a celebratory meal was hosted by the Parish Council. The preparations accepting the Icon of Axion Estin continues. The second stage has been completed and the Icon has been dressed with gold and silver and is currently venerated in the church in Protato, on Mt. Athos. Once it arrives at our church it will be placed on the front left next to the solea. This section was made ready thanks to our house chairperson. Father Konstantinos, Presbytera Anna and Andy spent a lot of time during their vacation in Greece visiting and examining several companies producing ecclesiastical woodcarvings in order to order a proskynitari (icon stand) for the icon. The Parish Council has chosen a Holy Mountain style, based on Father’s recommendation. A deposit has been sent to Oikonomidis Company in Thessaloniki, Greece and the proskinitary will arrive at the end of October. The 100th Anniversary committee is planning an official icon reception on Saturday, November 22nd and Sunday, November 23rd with the visit of his Eminence, Metropolitan Methodios. We are excited about the start of the second year of our New Greek School program, which starts on Tuesday, September 17th under our new school director Mrs. Elizabeth Hatzis and a new schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please inform all your friends with school age children about our Greek School program. Please let us know how to contact these potential students. This year we were pleased to be able to send ten of our children to the Diocese’s Summer Camp. We thank our St. Catherine’s Philoptochos for sponsoring two of them and the 95th Committee for sponsoring eight. Parents contributed only $100 per student. Our kids had a great time at the camp where they spent one week. The week of August 5-9 our community hosted the Metropolis vacation school where children from the Metropolis area advanced their faith through fun. The Parish Council is working on several fundraising events. A trivia night will take place on Saturday, October 19th. On November 9th we will present Basil the comedian on his third visit at our church with a very revised program and 90% new material. Our Bakaliaro dinner will be on Sunday, March 23, 2014 and our Palm Sunday dinner, on Sunday, April 13, 2014. A dinner honoring our parishioner of the year has been programmed for Sunday, April 24, 2014, following the Divine Liturgy. Our Gyro and Loukoumades Day is planned for Saturday, May 3, 2014. A Greek music night is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 17, 2014. The annual Appreciation Dinner is tentatively scheduled on Sunday, June 1st. Please mark your calendars! The success of these events highly depends on your participation and support. I would like to thank you all for your generosity, support, love and hard work. Την παραμονή 14ης Αυγούστου στον υποτροφίες και την Επιτροπή εορτασμου τής 95ης Μέγαλο Εσπερινό χοροστάτησε ο Σεβασμιώτατος επετείου για τη χορηγία οκτώ. Οι γονείς συνέβαλαν μόνο Μητροπολίτης Βοστώνης κ. Μεθόδιος και πολλοί ιερείς με $ 100 ανά μαθητή. Τα παιδιά μας πέρασαν παρα πολυ τής περιοχής σε μια πολύ γεμάτη εκκλησία με επισήμους ωραία στήν κατασκηνωση όπου διέμειναν μία εβδομάδα. και πιστούς. Είμαστε ενθουσιασμένοι γία την έναρξη του δεύτερου έτους του νέου προγράμματος του ελληνικού μας THE REAL MIXED MARRIAGE PROBLEM By Fr. Aris Metrakos Holy Trinity Church, SanFrancisco (paraphrased) Marrying someone who is not Orthodox threatens only the faith of the faithless…. "The Mixed-Marriage Problem." For literally as long as I can remember, there has not been a gathering of churchmen and women, wherein someone has not stood up to lament the "fact" that we are losing our young adults because they are entering into mixed-marriages. For those unacquainted with contemporary Orthodox Christian terminology , a mixed-marriage is the matrimonial union between an Orthodox Christian and a Christian from another tradition. For too many American Orthodox Christians, the mixed-marriage conventional wisdom follows this line of reasoning. In our pluralistic society, we cannot avoid the fact that most of our youth will choose spouses who have had a different religious upbringing. With these unions comes an inevitable dilution and disintegration of the practices of the Orthodox Faith. The Greek Orthodox version of the typical harangue sounds something like this: "My boy Costa married a xeni (stranger, outsider, foreigner) and now he doesn't come to Church!" I don't buy it….. My mother became Orthodox because of marriage. So did my father-in-law. So did my mother-in-law's mother-the first or one of the first converts in Jacksonville, Florida. Yia-Yia (Greek for "grandmother") could not have been more white-bread. She grew up as a Methodist. Her grandfather was a sergeant in the Confederate Army who fought under General Lee at Appomattox. All three embraced Orthodoxy at a time when the Liturgy was performed completely in the Greek language and there was no strategy for Church growth like small groups or Wednesday evening Bible studies. My family's witness confirms what I have seen in parish ministry. Whenever the Orthodox partner in a marriage is strong in his or her beliefs, the non-Orthodox spouse develops almost immediate admiration for the Orthodox Church. Very often this esteem leads to conversion and when it doesn't there is usually at least a sense of respect for the Orthodox way. Mixed-marriages in America expose a problem, and it's not that Vassilaki is engaged to a "non-orthodox. Protestant and Roman Catholic fiancés are not leading our young away from the Church. We are the source of the problem. We raise young people who are lukewarm in their faith. Are you worried that one day you may have grandchildren who think that icons violate the Second Commandment? Here is what you need to do: Take your child to as many services of the Church as possible from the time the child is forty days old. Keep the fasts. Pray together often, and at least before every meal. Participate together as a family in all of the sacraments -- including confession. Moreover, watch what you say. Every time you trash talk a priest or bishop as you sit around the Sunday table, your children become very confused. Psychologically, they see the clergy in their vestments as Jesus and you as God the Father. More often than not, the confusion you create is too difficult for young people to process and they will just drop out. If reading this article makes you wince, I apologize. But there is good news. It's never too late to change. If you are a young married Orthodox Christian not going to Church, get there next Sunday. Bring your spouse. See your priest. Get with the program. Your marriage can grow richer and stronger. If you're a parent that regrets not forcing the issue of living the life of the Church earlier in your own children's lives, then repent yourself. The change in your heart will affect everyone around you. Believe me, even if your kids are grown, they're still watching you. When all is said and done, marrying someone who is not Orthodox threatens only the faith of the faithless. Lived Orthodoxy is the pearl of great price that many seek but too few find. Could we please stop wringing our hands over the "mixed-marriage problem?" The Dormition PTO Committee would like to welcome back Father, Presbytera, Eleni, our Greek School and Sunday school teachers, students, parishioners, parents, children and friends back for the beginning of the new liturgical year 2013-2014. We hope that everyone had an enjoyable, safe and memorable summer. This year the PTO has organized another exciting series of events and celebrations to be enjoyed by all. Please look for these events in the weekly bulletin and in the next Koinotis. We ask that you plan ahead by marking your calendars so as to avoid conflicts with other competing activities. We challenge our families to attend all of our events this year and register our children for Greek and Sunday school classes. Can we reach 100% attendance this year? The liturgy and our events should be the priority as Christians. This will only be achieved by placing Christ first amidst the cacophony. Let’s hear His word. Let’s place Christ on top in our lives. Let’s make it happen. We are pleased to report that with your support, the PTO purchased two additional televisions for the first floor classrooms this summer which will be installed soon. We are certain that our New Greek School Director Elizabeth Hatzis and all of our ministries will make good use of them. Our Parish Making Pastries for the Festival For those of you who don’t know what a tsoureki is here is a little bit of history. Tsoureki is a type of braided bread which is traditionally served in Greece to celebrate Easter but can be eaten at any time during the year. Several neighboring nations also make a traditional Easter bread which is physically identical to tsoureki, such as choreg in Armenia and chorek in Turkey. This bread is traditionally served at the breaking of the Lenten fast, and loaves of tsoureki may also be exchanged on Easter Sunday as gifts of friendship and goodwill among Greeks. Godparents in particular tend to give tsoureki to their god-children. is tucked into a hollow in the bread's braid after it is baked. Red eggs are an important part of the Eastern Orthodox Easter tradition, symbolizing the blood of Christ, rebirth, and renewal. Tsoureki made during other times of the year for enjoyment don’t have the red egg in the middle, such as the ones made at our church for the festival. Numerous regional variations on tsoureki use an assortment of flavorings. Orange or vanilla essence can be mixed into the dough, for example, and some Greeks add mastic or mahlab to the dough for a distinctive flavor. Dried fruit and nuts can also be mixed into the bread or sprinkled on top. Mrs. Georgia Ververis and Mr. and Mrs. John Stefanou will be leading the ministry with guidance from Father and assistance from Eleni Raschi. Sessions will include activities from the HOPE and JOY Archdiocese curriculum. HOPE and JOY will meet on the last Friday of every month at 6pm, changes in dates and times can be found posted on the JOY/HOPE bulletin board outside the classrooms. Τα ξαναζυμώνουμε και τα βάζουμε στο ταψί. Προηγουμένως έχουμε καλύψει τον πάτο του ταψιού με parchment paper ή λίγο λάδι και αλεύρι γιά να μην κολλήσει. Το αφήνουμε περίπου 1 ώρα να διπλασιαστεί και το ψήνουμε σε προθερμασμένο φούρνο στους 325°F γιά 15 λεπτά και άλλα 10-15 λεπτά στους 350°F. Vacation Bible Camp MBC Camp Thank you to the Philoptochos and the 95th Anniversary Committee for sponsoring us and allowing us to attend the Metropolis summer camp. We had an unforgettable time, we met other campers from surrounding parishes and have hopefully made lifelong friendships. We attended daily services, chanted alongside our friends and the boys served in the altar. The younger kids went on a field trip to a dairy farm and the older kids went on a service mission helping at a local Indian reservation. We also learned how to “write” an icon and we will be displaying the icons once they have been blessed by Father. Please feel free to ask us about our trip we’d love to tell you all about it. Περάσαμε μια αξέχαστη εβδομάδα, στελέχη την Χριστίνα και την Angelika, η Άννα και συναντήσαμε άλλους κατασκηνωτές από γειτονικές Χριστίνα από την εκκλησία του Roslindale, η ενορίες και ελπίζουμε ότι έχουμε κάνει ισόβιες φιλίες. Τα μικρότερα παιδιά πήγαν μια εκδρομή σε και στα παιχνιδια έξω. Επίσης, εψαλαν και διάβασαν μια φάρμα γαλακτοκομικών προϊόντων και τα την Απστολική περικοπή κατά τη διάρκεια της μεγαλύτερα παιδιά πήγαν σε μια αποστολή υπηρεσίας Λειτουργίας τής Μεταμορφώσεως του Σωτήρος. Την βοηθώντας σε ένα ινδιάνικο καταυλισμό. Εμαθαμε Παρασκευή πήγαν μια εκδρομή στήν θερινή επίσης πώς να "αγιογραφούμε" ένα εικόνισμα και θα κατασκήνωση τής Mητρόπολης στο Contoocook, δείτε αυτές τις εικονίτσες τη στιγμή που έχουν NH. Mary Lynn of the Watertown church along with her daughter Nicole and staffers Christina, Angelika, Anna, and Christina from the Roslindale church, Katrina, Victoria, Keriann, Stavroula and Niko from our church led the children in Orthodox Life activities, arts and crafts as well as playing outside. They also chanted and read the epistle during the Transfiguration Liturgy. On Friday they went on a field trip to the Metropolis Camp in Contoocook, NH. It was a great experience and so many new friendships were started during camp. On Wednesday evening, August 14th, a Great Vespers took place in which his Eminence, Metropolitan Methodios of Boston officiated and assisted by twelve area priests. The panegyric speech was given by Protopresbyter Fr. George Dragas, Professor of the Theological School of the Holy Cross . Our church was filled with parishioners, faithful and officials who enjoyed a wonderful service. In attendance was the Consul General of Greece and Boston, Mrs. Ifigenia Kanara, the President and VP of the Federation of Hellenic American Societies of NE, Aldermen from Somerville and Representatives from the Greek media. The Philoptochos Ladies offered a very nice coffee hour after the service. On Thursday morning, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated with our church filled to capacity and after the Liturgy a festive luncheon hosted by the Parish Council took place at the Upper Community Hall. Over 160 people filled the Hall to enjoy a tasty meal that included baked lamb, roasted potatoes, gyro, salad and Galactoboureko for dessert. Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate and enjoy luncheon with us. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who helped to make this event a success. I would like to thank our priest, Fr. Konstantinos for his leadership, guidance, endless inspiration and hard work and our Presbytera Anna who worked for days preparing meals for the three full tables of dignitaries, officials and guests. Thank you, to our cooks, Kosta, Tashi S, and Danny K,. Thank you, Aphrodite, Diane, Maria G, Maria P., Lambrini, Peter, Sevi, and Teddy for your assistance in food preparation or serving. Thank you, Taso, Themis, Johnny and Demetri for assisting in various tasks. Thank you to Katina Maloutas for preparing and donating 4 trays of Galaktoboureko. I would also like to thank everyone who stayed late Wednesday evening to set and decorate the tables and the hall. This is another great community accomplishment showing that our community is gaining prominence in the minds of Greeks in the area. Vangelis Kechris ΤΟ ΠΑΝΗΓΥΡΙ ΤΗΣ ΠΑΝΑΓΙΑΣ Την Πέμπτη 15 Αυγούστου εορτάσαμε την Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου, προστάτιδος της εκκλησίας μας. Την Τετάρτη το βράδυ, 14 Αυγούστου έλαβε χώραν ο Μέγας Αρχιερατικός Εσπερινός στον οποίον χοροστάτησε ο Σεβασμιώτατος Μητροπολίτης Βοστώνης κ.κ. Μεθόδιος, συλλειτουργούντων δώδεκα ιερέων. Η πανηγυρική ομιλία της εορτής εκφωνήθηκε από τον Πρωτοπρεσβύτερο π. Γεώργιο Δράγα, Καθηγητή της Θεολογικής Σχολής του Τιμίου Σταυρού. Η εκκλησία μας ήταν ασφυκτικά γεμάτη από επισήμους, ενορίτες, και πιστούς. Μας τίμησαν με την παρουσία τους, η Γενική Πρόξενος της Ελλάδας στη Βοστώνη Κα Ιφιγένεια Kαναρά, ο πρόεδρος και ο αντιπρόεδρος της Ομοσπονδίας Ελληνοαμερικανικών Σωματείων της Νέας Αγγλίας, ο Καθηγητής της Θεολογίας κ. Ηλίας Πατσαβός, Δημοτικοί σύμβουλοι από το Somerville και εκπρόσωποι από τα ελληνικά μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης. Οι κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου μετά τον εσπερινό παρέθεσαν μια ωραία δεξίωση με νηστήσιμα γλυκά, φρούτα και ποτά. Την Τετάρτη το πρωί, η Θεία Λειτουργία εορτάστηκε σε μιά εκκλησία γεμάτη απο πιστούς, με την συμετοχή του Ιερομονάχου π. Ιακώβου Σιμωνοπετρίτου και την παρουσία του π. Patrick Tishel. Μετά τη Λειτουργία πραγματοποιήθηκε ένα ωραίο εορταστικό γεύμα στην επάνω Κοινοτική Αίθουσα. Πάνω από 160 άτομα γέμισαν τον χώρο για να απολαύσουν ένα νόστιμο πατροπαράδοτο γεύμα που περιλάμβανε ψητό αρνί, γύρο, πατάτες ψητές, σαλάτα, καφέ και γαλακτομπούρικο για επιδόρπιο. Ευχαριστώ όλους όσους ήρθαν γιά να γιορτάσουν την Παναγία και να απολαύσουν το γεύμα μαζί μας. Θα ήθελα επίσης να ευχαριστήσω όσους βοήθησαν για να γίνει αυτή η εκδήλωση επιτυχής. Ευχαριστώ τον ιερέα μας, π. Sunday School “A Teaching Ministry” We would like to welcome you all back to Sunday School on September 15th. It is so important that our children continue learning about our Orthodox faith, Jesus Christ, our saints. I have watched our kids grow so close over the summer. They attended the Metropolis summer camp in Contoocook, NH and then they worked as staff as our church hosted the vacation bible camp the first week in August. They have learned so much in those two weeks and even more importantly are thirsting to learn more alongside each other. I ask you all please bring your kids each Sunday, our faith is what will carry us through the good and bad times in our lives. I have children and I know how much they love sports and could play on a team on Sunday mornings. I know how easy it is to stay home on a Sunday morning relaxing, the only day most of us get to relax but coming to church each Sunday is so worth it! στιγμές στη ζωή μας. Έχω παιδιά και ξέρω πόσο πολύ αγαπούν τον αθλητισμό και θα μπορούσαν να παίξουν σε μια ομάδα την Κυριακή το πρωί. Ξέρω πόσο εύκολο είναι να μείνουν στο σπίτι την Κυριακή το πρωί και να χαλαρώσουν, τη μοναδική μέρα που οι περισσότεροι από μας ξεκουράζονται, αλλά αξίζει ο κόπος να ερχομαστε κάθε Κυριακή στην εκκλησία! Ελπίζω να σας βλέπω όλους κάθε εβδομάδα και αν θα θέλατε να βοηθήσετε με μια θρησκευτική δραστηριότητα στην τάξη ή εάν έχετε μια πρόταση μη διστάσετε να επικοινωνήσετε μαζί μου μέσω του γραφείου της εκκλησίας. Eleni Raschi Κατηχητικό Σχολείο Θα ήθελα να σας καλωσορίσω πίσω στο Κατηχητικό Σχολείο στις 15 Σεπτεμβρίου. Είναι τόσο σημαντικό να συνεχίσουν τα παιδιά μας μαθαίνουν για ορθόδοξη πίστη μας, τόν Ιησού Χριστό, τούς Αγίους μας. Έχω παρακολουθήσει τα παιδιά μας μεγαλώνουν από τόσο κοντά κατά τη διάρκεια του καλοκαιριού. Παρακολούθησαν τήν θερινή κατασκηνωση τής Mητροπολής στο Contoocook, NH και στη συνέχεια εργάστηκαν ως προσωπικό στήν εκκλησία μας πού φιλοξένησε το σχολείο διακοπών τής Mητρόπολης την πρώτη εβδομάδα του Αυγούστου. Έχουν μάθει τόσα πολλά σε αυτές τις δύο εβδομάδες και ακόμη πιο σημαντικό διψούν να μάθουν περισσότερα ο ένας δίπλα στον άλλο. I did, although it involved a lot of planning for the upcoming musical year at Dormition Church. Lots of things to look forward to in the fall: First choir Sunday is the week after the festival, September 15th, the Sunday of the Holy Cross. th National Church Music Sunday is the first Sunday of October, the 6 . Choir will host coffee hour and answer any questions you may have about joining us…aka Choir Recruitment Sunday. We also honor St. Romanos,* the patron saint of choirs. According to legend, Romanus was not at first considered to be either a talented reader or singer. He was, however, loved by the Patriarch of Constantinople because of his great humility. Once, around the year 518, while serving in the Church of the Panagia at Blachernae, during the All-Night Vigil for the Feast of the Nativity of Christ, he was assigned to read the kathisma verses from the Psalter. He read so poorly that another reader had to take his place. Some of the lesser clergy ridiculed Romanus for this, and being humiliated he sat down in one of the choir stalls. Overcome by weariness and sorrow, he soon fell asleep. As he slept, the Theotokos (Mother of God) appeared to him with a scroll in her hand. She commanded him to eat the scroll, and as soon as he did so, he awoke. He immediately received a blessing from the Patriarch, mounted the ambo (pulpit), and chanted extemporaneously his famous Kontakion of the Nativity, "Today the Virgin gives birth to Him Who is above all being…." The emperor, the patriarch, the clergy, and the entire congregation were amazed at both the profound theology of the hymn and Romanos' clear, sonorous voice as he sang. Saint Silouan, was born Simeon Ivanovich Antonov in 1866 to Russian Orthodox parents who came from the village of Sovsk in Russia's Tambov region. At the age of twenty-seven he left his native Russia and came to Mount Athos, where he became a monk at the Monastery of St. Panteleimon and was given the name Silouan, the Russian version of the Biblical name Silvanus. Mrs. Elizabeth Hatzis, Director—Mrs. Hatzis has studied Education, the History of Music in Thessaloniki, Greece and the French language in Montreal, Canada. Mrs. Hatzis has been a Greek school teacher for over thirty years having taught all class levels from Pre-K to the 9th grade level, along with adult conversational classes. During her thirty years of teaching, Mrs. Hatzis has been Head Teacher for five of those years and Principal for fifteen years. Mrs. Hatzis also has taught Greek dancing throughout her teaching career. In 2010, she was awarded “Teacher of the Year” award from the National Herald. Ms. Nikoleta Hatzis— Ms. Hatzis was born and raised in the Boston area. She finished her Greek school education with the highest grades, which earned her the AHEPA Medal. Ms. Hatzis has over ten years of Italian language tutelage and a basic grasp of the French language. She graduated from Boston College with a degree in History. While studying at Boston College, Ms. Hatzis furthered her Greek studies. She has worked as a teacher’s assistant for five years and for the last two years as a Greek school teacher for kindergarten, first and second grades. Ms. Anna Konstantinoglou— Ms. Konstantinoglou was born and raised in Thessaloniki, Greece. After completing two university degrees, one in Psychology (BS in Psychology from Lincoln University) and the second in French Language & Literature (Degree in French Language and Literature from Aristotle University) in Thessaloniki, she went to Montpellier, France to acquire a Master’s degree in Foreign Languages, Negotiations and Management of International Projects. She has several years of professional experience in teaching Greek, French and English to children and adults.
