During Autumn of the Year...
...reasons to remember,
reasons to celebrate and give thanks
Dear fellow Cretans,
Autumn is a significant period of time for the PAA and
the Cretan community. We commemorate the Arkadi Holocaust and the ultimate sacrifice that our Cretan forefathers
made on November 8, 1866, when they chose to set fire to
the munitions’ storage at Arkadi rather than give up their
freedom to the Ottoman occupiers who subjected Crete to
more than 250 years of enslavement. Nearly 850 individuals lost their lives in the explosion of the Arkadi Monastery.
The Arkadi Holocaust is the ultimate symbol of the Cretan
struggle against the Turkish occupation and of the spirit of
fundamental freedoms of all Cretans.
On October 28, we celebrate Greece’s “OXI” day. On that
day in 1940, the defiant one-word “OXI” was Greece’s response to Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini’s ultimatum that
Greece allow the Axis forces to enter and occupy Greece or
face war. The response to the Italians by Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas marked Greece’s entry and participation in WWII. When the Italian forces attacked our northern
border with Albania within two hours, the Greek army, with
Cretan soldiers at every step, fought valiantly, defeating
Mussolini’s forces, pushing them back, and denying them
occupation of Greek soil.
Closer to our Cretan community in the U.S., and each
October since its formation, the PAA celebrates its anniversary as an organized fraternal body. This year we proudly
celebrate 81 years of history in philanthropy, charity, education and culture. We continue our mission with the same
enthusiasm and dedication as our forefathers. The PAA does
not rest on past accomplishments. It continuously seeks to
improve and to face new challenges.

During the weekend of October 8 – 10, District 6th chapter leaders met with members of the PAA board at the beautiful monastic setting of St. Nicholas Ranch, Dunlap, California. Our agenda was simple; to address issues common to
the chapters or that are unique to individual chapters. The
discussion was energetic and amazingly productive. Perhaps
the most important element of the Leadership Conference
was the fact that chapters are beginning to feel that they are
not alone, that they are a part of the larger whole, a part
of a strong national Cretan community. They understand
that they belong to an energetic, viable national fraternity,
relevant in every way, with a passionate membership, clear
vision, and dedicated individuals. I wish to thank all participants and organizers for the most incredible weekend.
As the holidays approach, we find ourselves embracing reflections of the season; thinking about family and
loved ones, concerned about those less fortunate than
ourselves, and the meaning of giving. We think about our
own blessings and give thanks for our material and immaterial fortunes. For my part, I feel blessed for my family - my
immediate family and my extended PAA family. I wish to take
this opportunity to thank all of you for enriching my life during the past year that I have served as PAA president. It has
been such an honor and privilege for me and an experience
truly hard to describe, filled with emotions, good will, fraternity, warm expressions of friendship, and the genuine Cretan
bond. You have given me so many reasons to celebrate and
give thanks and, for that, I thank you.

Κατά τη διάρκεια του Φθινοπώρου...
...λόγοι να θυμηθουμε,
λόγοι για να γιορτάσουμε και να πούμε ευχαριστώ
Αγαπητοί φίλοι,
Το φθινόπωρο είναι μια σημαντική χρονική περίοδο
για την ΠΕΑ και την Κρητική κοινότητα. Τιμάμε την μνήμη
του Ολοκαυτώματος Αρκαδίου, την υπέρτατη θυσία που οι
Κρήτες πρόγονοί μας έκαναν στις 8 Νοεμβρίου 1866, όταν
επέλεξαν να βάλουν φωτιά στην αποθήκη των πυρομαχικών
στο Αρκάδι, και όχι να παραδώσουν την ελευθερία τους
στους Οθωμανούς κατακτητές που κρατούσαν τη Κρήτη
υπόδουλη για περισσότερα από 250 χρόνια. Σχεδόν
850 άτομα έχασαν τη ζωή τους στην έκρηξη της Μονής
Αρκαδίου. Το Ολοκαύτωμα του Αρκάδιου είναι το απόλυτο
σύμβολο του Κρητικού αγώνα ενάντια στην τουρκική
κατοχή και συμβολίζει το πνεύμα της Ελευθερίας όλων των
Κρητικών.
Στις 28 Οκτωβρίου, γιορτάζουμε στην Ελλάδα την
επέτειο του ιστορικού «ΟΧΙ». Την ημέρα αυτή το 1940, μία
λέξη, «ΟΧΙ», ήταν η απάντηση τελεσίγραφο της Ελλάδας
στον Ιταλό δικτάτορα Μπενίτο Μουσολίνι, όταν ζήτησε
από την Ελλάδα να επιτρέψει στις δυνάμεις του Άξονα να
εισέλθουν στη χώρα και να τη καταλάβει, ή τον πόλεμο.
Η απάντηση αυτή από τον Έλληνα Πρωθυπουργό Ιωάννη
Μεταξά, ήταν η είσοδο και συμμετοχή της Ελλάδας στο
Β‘ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο. Όταν οι Ιταλικές δυνάμεις επιτέθηκαν
στα βόρεια σύνορα μας με την Αλβανία εντός δύο ωρών,
ο Ελληνικός στρατός, με Κρήτες στρατιώτες σε κάθε βήμα,
πολέμησαν γενναία, νικώντας τις δυνάμεις του Μουσολίνι,
ωθώντας τους πίσω, και στερώντας τους την κατάληψη
Ελληνικού εδάφους.
Πιο κοντά στην Κρητική κοινότητα μας στις ΗΠΑ, κάθε
Οκτώβριο, η ΠΕΑ γιορτάζει την επέτειό της ιδρύσεως της
ως οργανωμένο αδελφικό σώμα. Φέτος γιορτάζουμε με
περηφάνια 81 χρόνια φιλανθρωπίας, εκπαίδευσης και
πολιτισμού. Συνεχίζουμε την αποστολή μας με τον ίδιο
ενθουσιασμό και την ίδια αφοσίωση των προγόνων μας.
Η ΠΕΑ δεν στηρίζεται μόνο στις προηγούμενες επιτυχίες.
Επιδιώκει συνεχώς να βελτιωθεί και να αντιμετωπίσει τις
νέες προκλήσεις.
Κατά τη διάρκεια του Σαββατοκύριακου 8 έως 10
Οκτωβρίου, τοπικά σωματεία της 6ης Περιφέρειας
συναντήθηκαν με μέλη του διοικητικού συμβουλίου
της ΠΕΑ στο όμορφο ράντσο του Αγίου Νικολάου, στο
Ντάνλαπ της Καλιφόρνια. Το πρόγραμμά μας ήταν απλό- η
αντιμετώπιση θεμάτων που είναι κοινά για όλους τους
συλλόγους μας ή που είναι μοναδικά σε συγκεκριμένους
συλλόγους. Η συζήτηση ήταν γεμάτη ενέργεια και
εκπληκτικά παραγωγική. Ίσως το πιο σημαντικό στοιχείο
της Διάσκεψης Ηγεσίας ήταν το γεγονός ότι οι σύλλογοι
έχουν αρχίσει να αισθάνονται ότι δεν είναι μόνοι τους,
ότι αποτελούν μέρος του ευρύτερου συνόλου, μέρος
μιας ισχυρής παναμερικανικής Κρητικής κοινότητας.
Καταλαβαίνουν ότι ανήκουν σε μια ενεργητική, βιώσιμη
αδελφότητα, σχετική με κάθε τρόπο, με παθιασμένη
συμμετοχή μελών, σαφές όραμα και αφοσιωμένα μέλη. Θα
ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω όλους τους συμμετέχοντες και τους
διοργανωτές για ένα απίστευτο Σαββατοκύριακο.
Καθώς πλησιάζουν οι γιορτές, περικλείουμε τους
εαυτούς μας στο πνεύμα των ημερών αυτών. Σκεφτόμαστε
την οικογένεια και τους αγαπημένους μας, ανησυχούμε
για τους λιγότερο τυχερούς από εμάς, και την νόημα της
φιλανθρωπίας. Σκεφτόμαστε για το πόσο ευλογημένοι
είμαστε και ευχαριστούμε για τα δικά μας υλικά και άυλα
αγαθά. Από την πλευρά μου, αισθάνομαι ευλογημένος
για την οικογένειά μου - την άμεση οικογένειά μου και την
ευρύτερη οικογένεια μου, τη ΠΕΑ. Θα ήθελα να επωφεληθώ
αυτής της ευκαιρίας για να ευχαριστήσω όλους εσάς που
εμπλουτίσατε τη ζωή μου κατά τη διάρκεια του περασμένου
έτους που υπηρετώ ως πρόεδρος της ΠΕΑ. Είναι μία
μεγάλη τιμή και προνόμιο για μένα και μια εμπειρία
που πραγματικά δύσκολα μπορώ να περιγράψω, γεμάτη
συγκινήσεις, καλή θέληση, αδελφοσύνη, πραγματικής
φιλίας, και γνήσιου Κρητική δεσμού. Μου έχετε δώσει
τόσο πολλούς λόγους για να γιορτάσω και να δώσω τις
ευχαριστίες και γι ‘αυτό, ΣΑΣ ΕΥΧΑΡΙΣΤΩ.

Dear Mr. Katsanevakis,
Dear Velivasakis Family,
As you may know, KPHTH magazine serves as the
only contemporary “record” of the Pancretan Association of
America (PAA), therefore, it has a duty to be factual. I would
like to draw your attention to some of your magazine’s misrepresentations and omissions that make this “record” both
inaccurate and incomplete.
The following is the opening sentence for the article,
entitled The Pancretan Endowment Fund, found on page 14
of your June 2010 issue:
“The Pancretan Endowment fund (PEF) was established
during the 1974 PAA Convention in Pittsburgh, PA.”
To be factual, in 1974 the PAA Convention was held
in San Francisco, California; but, a much more important
correction is that the Pancretan Endowment Fund WAS
NOT established until 1978 at the Salt Lake City, Utah PAA
Convention.
In the past, there have been a variety of articles that
mention, or are completely about, the PEF, and many of
them have misled your readers. The example I will point to
is from your October 2006 obituary for Byron Ieronymidis in
which the following statement was made:
“Mr. Stamatakis was a key figure in assuring the establishment of the Pancretan Endowment Fund (PEF) for the
University of Crete.”
In actuality, the events that made the PEF viable happened at the 1978 PAA Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah.
At that time, Mr. Kostas Stamatakis was the chairman for
the fundraiser that had collected $150,000 for the University library. Both, he and the late Mr. Tsourounis (who was
the PAA President), were ready to hand over this entire
amount to the Greek Government Representative when
Professor John Stavroulakis informed everyone that the
Greek Government had all the costs for the library included
in the University’s construction budget. It was then, that
the Convention Chairman, the late Manousos Stathoudakis,
created a committee (the biggest committee of the convention, incidentally) to study the issue and make a report to
the convention floor. The study committee was headed by
PAA Past President – the late Mr. Emmanuel Pavlakis. I was
part of this large committee, as were Stavros Semanderes,
Emmanuel Tsikoudakis, Prof. John Stavroulakis, Nick Kanis,
Harry Kidonakis , and many others.
We evaluated the facts and unanimously recommended
to the 1978 Convention to keep the money - in the PAA – in
a restricted fund, named “The University of Crete Fund”,
and support programs that were not funded by the Greek
Government. Emmanuel Pavlakis presented our resolution
to the Convention, but was stiffly opposed by Mr. Stamatakis, Mr. Tsourounis, and others who believed the money
should be handed over immediately. Mr. Pavlakis stuck to his
guns and demanded a vote on the resolution as presented;
the resolution carried overwhelmingly and Pavlakis was
immediately elected as the Fund’s first Chairman. Under his
able leadership and that of Mr. Sfouggatakis (who succeeded
Pavlakis in 1982) the University Press was adapted and

funded with about $50,000. Sfouggatakis turned in $575,000
to the next elected Chairman, the late Mr. Svourakis, at the
1986 Convention. Svourakis died in 1987; then, the board
elected Mr. Stamatakis as Chairman (he retained it for over
twelve years).
Had the money been sent to the Greek Government in
1978, there would be no Endowment to support worthy
university projects. Credit for the Pancretan Endowment
Fund’s establishment belongs to Mr. Emmanuel Pavlakis and
many recognitions awarded to PEF members are really his
work’s fruits.
As an additional comment, I would like to object to the
term “Patriarch of the Cretans abroad” also used in the
obituary. Such terms misrepresent the fact and have no
place in our beloved PAA which has been forge with the toil
of many Cretans working as volunteers within the democratic principles which are the very essence of the Cretan soul
and the foundation of the PAA.
I would like to return to The Pancretan Endowment
Fund article (from your June 2010 issue) for my concluding remarks. The article ends on pages 15 and 16 with
lists of donors. I believe that the responsible criteria your
magazine must be held to is that a list of contributors be
fully researched before it is publicized, in other words, you
are obligated to have ALL names. During the Fund’s money
raising campaign 1976 – 1978, the Utah members of Minos
have been recognized as the second largest contributors
(surpassed only by the Chicago Cretans), yet, your recent article’s list includes only a few individuals of the Utah Cretans.
I can name over 100 people from Utah that donated more
than $20,000 to the University Library, 30 names can also
be found in the following issues of KPHTH: November 1977
- page 12, December 1977 - page 12, February 1978 - pages
13 and 14, September 1978 - page 16.
With as many omissions as I’ve found above, I can’t
imagine how many are missing nationwide!

Διάβασα προσεκτικά πολλές
δημοσιεύσεις για το θέμα της
πυρπόλησης της Εβραϊκής Συναγωγής
στα Χανιά συμπεριλαμβανομένης
και της δικής σας ανακοίνωσης στο
περιοδικό Κρήτη.
Διαπιστώνω μετά λύπης μου ενώ
ήταν έντονη και ακαριαία η αντίδραση
πολλών φορέων και μέσων να
σπιλώσουν την κοινωνία των Χανίων
με πρόφαση το αυτονόητο δικαίωμα
της ανεξιθρησκίας λίγοι μπήκαν στον
κόπο να μας πληροφορήσουν αν
τελικά βρέθηκαν οι δράστες, αν ήταν
Χανιώτες ή τι προελεύσεως ήταν τα
διαβατήρια τους.
Άλλες οργανώσεις μπορεί να έχουν
θεμιτούς ή αθέμιτους λόγους να
αποφεύγουν να μας πληροφορήσουν
αλλά για την Παγκρητική και το
περιοδικό Κρήτη είναι χρέος να
προβάλει όλη την αλήθεια.
Θα θέλαμε να μας πληροφορήσετε
κύριε Πρόεδρε αν γνωρίζεται και τι
πράξατε για να προβληθεί η αλήθεια
με την ίδια ένταση και ακαριαία
αντίδραση που προβλήθηκε το
γεγονός.
Σας ευχαριστώ εκ των προτέρων
και ελπίζω να έχετε την καλοσύνη να
μου απαντήσετε δημόσια με τον ίδιο
τρόπο που δημόσια θέσατε το θέμα
μέσα από τις σελίδες του περιοδικού

Update… Arson at Etz Hayyim Synagogue

Many of our members have been inquiring on the latest developments
of the arson at the historic Etz Hayyim Synagogue in Chania, January of this
year. I am saddened and disturbed at the apparent apathy prevalent in Greece
regarding these types of barbaric acts and injustices.
On January 7 of this year, arsonists attacked the Synagogue in Chania. Although considerable damage was done to the recently restored building (one
of the most historic places in Crete), the perpetrators did not accomplish their
objective of complete destruction. One week later, a second attack followed
with disastrous consequences. This time, the Chania Synagogue was almost
completely destroyed, its numerous treasures of artifacts and manuscripts lost
forever.
A noteworthy observation here is that the first attack went by almost unnoticed by police authorities, the national or local press, the politicians, and
the local population. The PAA sent a letter to the Greek press and government
representatives expressing our community’s dismay at the events at the Synagogue. The world community mobilized in expressing its disgust in mass media
headlines. International pressure forced the Greek police to proceed with
investigations into the crime. The result was the arrests of one Greek national,
two individuals from the U.S., and two British citizens. The arrests triggered a
wave of anti-Semitism.
In August, the local newspaper, Chaniotika Nea reported that all charges
against the suspects were being dropped due to insufficient evidence. The
Magistrate Court and the Public Prosecutor had agreed to stop the process
because of “weak indications of guilt”. The suspects were freed.
What is disturbing here is not that the suspects were freed. Greece abides
by the notion of “innocent until proven guilty” and, in the opinion of the legal
authorities, there was insufficient evidence for trial. We accept and respect
the authorities’ opinion. However, an appalling attack did take place, not once
but twice against the Synagogue, resulting in mass destruction. That much we
know. Shouldn’t the police, the press, the political representatives, the common folk and yes, the entire Cretan people who should be appalled by such
barbaric acts, raise their voice and express their disapproval? Why the complacency, the apathy, the turning of heads the other way? Cretans throughout
history raised their arms against tyranny in support of freedom of religious
choice and basic human rights. Where are they now?

Held at St. Nicholas Ranch

There was music and dancing, there
was an abundance of food, there were
sunshine and breathtaking vistas, but,
most of all, there was fellowship and a
desire to share ideas to elevate the PAA
to greater heights. Chapters from the
wine country to the desert, from the
mountains to the ocean gathered as
they normally do every year at the St.
Nicholas Ranch in central California.
This year, the District 6 retreat
weekend was enhanced with the addition of a Leadership Conference. President Ted Manousakis and 10 members
of his board held their second District
Leadership Conference. Twelve district
chapters were represented and their
leaders, along with the Board members, discussed issues ranging from local membership, youth participation, to
what should drive the focus of the PAA
at a national level.
During breakout sessions and ensuing discussions, dozens of ideas surfaced that will form the foundation of
action plans for both the local chapters
as well as the Board to implement over
the next several weeks. The feedback
received at the end of the session was
overwhelmingly positive and everyone
welcomed the opportunity to have a
meaningful forum to address issues that
impact all of our chapters. The remaining Districts will be holding similar Leadership Conferences over the next several months. As dates are confirmed, they
will be posted on the eNewsletter and
in future issues of KPHTH.

Report on
District 6 Leadership Conference

On a crisp October weekend, Cretans from the 6th District of the PAA
gathered for their annual ritual - to
relax and enjoy each other’s company
at St. Nicholas Ranch, Dunlap, California. The usual glendi did take place like
other years, with food, wine, tsikoudia
and Cretan music and dance. But this
year the PAA took advantage of the
gathering of our California members
and held its Leadership Conference at
the ranch amidst an atmosphere of serenity and spirituality. The ranch holds
a special meaning to Cretans of the 6th
District as it was His Eminence the late
Metropolitan Antonios (a Cretan) who,
with the help of our California and
Southwest PAA members, established
St. Nicholas Ranch in the 1970s. His
final resting place is among the majestic gardens of fruit trees and flowers
on the grounds of the monastery and
cloisters.
The presidents and other leaders of
the 6th District attended the conference. The discussion centered on the
issues pertinent to their chapters and
district and, after nearly four hours
of meetings and workshops, most
participants wanted to continue. I am
happy to report that our Leadership
Conferences are going well and yielding
results. Thank you to all attendees from
District 6 and the PAA board and to
the presenters and organizers, Stamati
Zoumberakis, Lefteri Dramitinos, Helen
Ranney, and John Manos. And thank
you to John and Dimitra Kordazaki and
to so many other Californian Cretans
for their unbelievable hospitality, love
and goodwill.

πίσω γιά μιά σύντομη αναφορά
στό διάστημα πού πέρασε.

Αγαπητά μέλη της ΠΕΑ
Σας εύχομαι καλό χειμώνα, με υγεία και
πρόοδο στη ζωή όλων μας . Όλο αυτό το
διάστημα προσπάθησα ανταπεξέλθω στα
καθήκοντα και τις υποχρεώσεις μου από την
θέση της εκτελεστικής διευθύντριας των γυναικείων συλλόγων.
Παραβρέθηκα στις ετήσιες χοροεσπερίδες των γυναικείων
συλλόγων . Proodos, Springfield MA, Pasiphae N.Y. , «Amalthea»
Chicago, ενώ επισκέφτηκα το Detroit για την χοροεσπερίδα τού
συλλόγου Ψηλορείτης και συγχρόνως συναντήθηκα με τις κυρίες
τού συλλόγου Κρήτη.
Τον Μάϊο παραβρέθηκα στη χοροεσπερίδα τού συλλόγου της
νεολαίας Μινώταυρος, Salt Lake City. Σε συνάντηση πού είχαμε, με
τον Πρόεδρο της ΠΕΑ κ. Μανουσάκη, την πρόεδρο της PYA, Ελένη
Σωπασή, τον κυβερνήτη της περιφέρειας κ. Γιώργο Τσουτσουνάκη,
τους προέδρους και μέλη των τοπικών συλλόγων , επικοινώνησα
με τις κυρίες τού συλλόγου, οι κόρες τού Μίνωα.
Παρακολούθησα όλες τις συνεδριάσεις τού Διοικητικού
συμβουλίου της ΠΕΑ, παραβρέθηκα σε όλες τις εκδηλώσεις της Β’
Περιφέρειας, στην Ελληνική παρέλαση στη ΝΥ και Βοστόνη.
Σε όλα τα γυναικεία τμήματα υπάρχει αγάπη και αρμονική
συνεργασία.
Είναι πολύ θετικό για την Π.Ε. Αμερικής όταν βλέπεις νέες
κυρίες να έχουν αναλάβει την διοίκηση των συλλόγων.
Η διοίκηση των συλλόγων περνά ομαλά από την μία γενιά στην
άλλη και με την βοήθεια της νέας τεχνολογίας συνεχίζουν το έργο
των προκατόχων τους.
Κατά το διάστημα των καλοκαιρινών μου διακοπών στην
Κρήτη, παραβρέθηκα στα αποκαλυπτήρια της προτομής τού Dr.
Κ. Παπαδάκη στα Μεσκλά Χανίων , παρακολούθησα την θεατρική
παράσταση για τον Δασκαλογιάννη ( Debut ) στην Ανώπολη
Σφακίων, και παραβρέθηκα στην κατάθεση στεφάνου στο
Μνημείο των πεσόντων στην Κάντανο Χανίων. Στο τέλος Ιουλίου
και 1η Αυγούστου παρακολούθησα τις εργασίες τού Παγκοσμίου
Συνεδρίου Κρητών στον Αγ. Νικόλαο Λασιθίου.
Το υπόλοιπο διάστημα της θητείας μου θα συνεχίσω, με πολύ
χαρά, τις επισκέψεις μου στα γυναικεία τμήματα και ότι άλλο
προκύψει.
Σάς υπενθυμίζω ότι στο επόμενο συνέδριο στο Clear Water FL,
θα βράβευση ο γυναικείος σύλλογος με την μεγαλύτερη αύξηση
μελών , επί τις % , για το διάστημα Ιούνιος 2009 με Ιούνιο 2011.
Σάς ευχαριστώ όλους για την συνεργασία σας.

144 Χρόνια από το Ολοκαύτωμα
της Ιεράς Μονής Αρκαδίου
Toυ Ἀρχιμανδρίτη Μύρωνος Καλαϊτζῆ
Ἡγουμένου τῆς Ἱερᾶς Μονῆς Ἀρκαδίου.
Ὀχτὼ αἰῶνες ἔχουν περάσει ἀπὸ τὴν ἵδρυση τῆς
περίφημης Μονῆς τοῦ Ἀρκαδίου καὶ αὐτὴ ἐξακολουθεῖ
νὰ στέκεται ἀκλόνητη ὄρθια σὲ πεῖσμα τῶν καιρῶν. Ἐνῶ
ἑκατὸ σαράντα τέσσερα χρόνια ἔχουν παρέλθει ἀπὸ τὴ
δραματικὴ ἐκείνη νύχτα τῆς Ὁλοκαυτώσεως τοῦ ΑΡΚΑΔΙΟΥ,
ἀλλὰ καὶ 144 αἰῶνες καὶ ἂν περάσουν ἡ εἰκόνα τῆς ἑκούσιας
ἐκείνης προσφορᾶς θὰ μένει ὁλοζώντανη στὴ σκέψη τῶν
ἐλεύθερων ἀνθρώπων καὶ προκαλεῖ τὸ θαυμασμὸ τῆς
ἀνθρωπότητας, στὸ διάβα τῶν αἰώνων.
Μετὰ τὴν παρακμὴ τοῦ Βυζαντινοῦ Κράτους τὸ Ἀρκάδι,
καὶ γενικὰ ἡ Κρήτη, στοὺς δίσεκτους αἰῶνες καὶ τοὺς
μαύρους καιροὺς ποὺ ἀκολούθησαν, δὲν ἀλλοτριώθηκαν
ἀπὸ τὰ ἱερὰ καὶ ὅσια τοῦ γένους καὶ τῆς φυλῆς, ἀλλὰ
διατήρησαν τὴν ἑλληνορθόδοξη φυσιογνωμία τους καὶ
δραστηριοποιήθηκαν καὶ ἔδρασαν ὡς ἐπαναστατικὰ κέντρα
καὶ ἐργαστήρια ἐνάντια στοὺς διάφορους κατακτητὲς καὶ
ἐπιβουλῆς τῆς πατρίδας μας.
Ἡ Ἱερὰ Μονή μας βρίσκεται σὲ ἀπόσταση 23 χιλιομέτρων
βορειοδυτικὰ τοῦ Ρεθύμνου καὶ στὸ σημεῖο ποὺ ἑνώνονται
οἱ ἐπαρχίες Ρεθύμνου, Μυλοποτάμου καὶ Ἀμαρίου, καὶ σὲ
ὑψόμετρο 550 μέτρων ἀπὸ τὴν ἐπιφάνεια τῆς θάλασσας.
Ἡ καταστροφικὴ μανία κατὰ τῆς Ὀρθοδοξίας τῶν
διαφόρων βαρβάρων κατακτητῶν τῆς Κρήτης καὶ τῶν

ληστρικῶν συμμορίων τῶν κουρσάρων, ἐξαφάνισαν κάθε
γραπτὸ κείμενο ἢ στοιχεῖο σχετικὰ μὲ τὴν ἱστορία τῆς
Μονῆς.
Ἔτσι, λοιπόν, πότε ἀκριβῶς ἱδρύθηκε τὸ μοναστήρι τοῦ
Ἀρκαδίου δὲν εἶναι σαφῶς τεκμηριωμένο. Μᾶλλον ἡ ἄποψη
ὅτι ἱδρύθηκε τὸν 13ο αἰώνα ἀπὸ κάποιον μοναχὸ Ἀρκάδιο,
γι’ αὐτὸ καὶ ὀνομάστηκε Μονὴ «Ἀρκαδίου», εἶναι καὶ ἡ πιὸ
πιθανή.
Στοὺς 8 αἰῶνες ζωῆς τῆς Μονῆς ἐπισυνέβησαν
ἀλλεπάλληλες, μερικὲς καὶ ὁλοκληρωμένες, καταστροφὲς
ἀπὸ φυσικὰ αἴτια καὶ διάφορες ἐπιδρομὲς τῶν κατακτητῶν
τῆς Κρήτης. Ἀπὸ τοὺς Ἄραβες Σαρακηνοὺς 9ος – 10ος αἰ.
(833-961 μ.Χ.), ἀπὸ τοὺς Ἐνετοὺς 13ος – 17ος αἰ. (12041669 μ.Χ.), ἀπὸ τοὺς Τούρκους 17ος -19ος αἰ. (1669-1897
μ.Χ.) καὶ τοὺς Αἰγυπτίους (1830-1840).
Τὸ μοναστήρι ἀποτελεῖται ἀπὸ ἕνα ἐντυπωσιακὸ
φρουριακὸ συγκρότημα. Στὴν καρδιὰ τοῦ φρουριακοῦ
συγκροτήματος κυριαρχεῖ τὸ δίκλιτο καθολικό. Τὸ βόρειο
κλίτος εἶναι ἀφιερωμένο στὴ Μεταμόρφωση τοῦ Σωτήρα
Χριστοῦ καὶ τὸ νότιο κλίτος στοὺς ἰσαποστόλους Ἁγίους
Κωνσταντῖνο καὶ Ἑλένη.
Πέριξ βρίσκονται τὸ ἱ. παρεκκλήσιο τοῦ Ἁγίου Ἀρκαδίου,
τὸ ἡγουμενεῖο, ἡ πυριτιδαποθήκη – παλαιὰ οἰνοθήκη, ὁ
χῶρος ὅπου ξετυλίχτηκε στὶς 9 Νοεμβρίου τοῦ 1866 ἕνα
ἀπὸ τὰ μεγαλύτερα δράματα τῆς κρητικῆς ἱστορίας, ποὺ
συντάραξε κυριολεκτικὰ ὄχι μόνο τὴ μεγαλόνησο, ἀλλὰ καὶ

ὁλόκληρο τὸν κόσμο, ἐπίσης ἡ ἱστορικὴ
τράπεζα ὅπου ὁλοκληρώθηκε τὸ Ἀρκαδικὸ
Δράμα, τὸ μουσεῖο, τὸ ἐκθετήριο, τὰ
κελαρικὰ καὶ τὰ κελιὰ τῶν μοναχῶν. Ἐκτὸς
τῆς Μονῆς βρίσκονται τὸ ὀστεοφυλάκιο
– παλαιὸς ἀνεμόμυλος τῆς Μονῆς καὶ ἕνα
ἐπιβλητικό κτίσμα, οἱ παλαιοὶ στάβλοι,
οἱ ὁποῖοι μετὰ τὴν ἀναστήλωσή τους
χρησιμοποιοῦνται ὡς χῶροι πολλαπλῶν
χρήσεων.
Στὴν Ἱερὰ Μονὴ Ἀρκαδίου γιὰ 8 αἰῶνες
τώρα καίει ἀδιάκοπα τὸ κανδήλι τῆς
πίστεως καὶ καλλιεργοῦνται οἱ μοναχικὲς
ἀρετές.
Παράλληλα τὸ μοναστήρι μας, ὅλα
αὐτὰ τὰ χρόνια τοῦ βίου του, καλλιέργησε
καὶ ἐξυπηρέτησε κυρίως φιλανθρωπικοὺς
καὶ ἐκπαιδευτικοὺς σκοπούς, τὴν
περίθαλψη ἀσθενῶν, τὴ διδασκαλία
παιδιῶν καὶ τὴ φιλοξενία ταξιδιωτῶν.
Στὸ σημεῖο αὐτὸ θὰ ἤθελα νὰ κάνω
μία ἐπισήμανση, συχνὰ λησμονεῖται γιὰ
νὰ μὴν πῶ ἀπεμπολεῖται ἡ ἑπτὰ αἰώνων
ζωὴ, θρησκευτικὴ καὶ κοινωνικὴ προσφορὰ
τῆς Μονῆς καὶ ἐπικεντρώνεται ἡ προσοχὴ
στὰ γεγονότα τοῦ 19ου αἰώνα. Τὰ κατὰ
τὰ ἄλλα ὑψίστης σημασίας γεγονότα
τοῦ 19ου αἰώνα μὲ ἀποκορύφωμα τὸ
φθινόπωρο τοῦ 1866 δὲν πρέπει νὰ
ἐπισκιάζουν τὸν πρότερο βίο της.
Ἀναμφισβήτητα, ἡ Μονὴ Ἀρκαδίου
γίνεται πασίγνωστη ἀνὰ τὴν ὑφήλιον καὶ
καθιερώνεται ὡς σύμβολο αὐτοθυσίας,
ἐλευθερίας καὶ ἡρωισμοῦ στὴν περίοδο
τῆς Κρητικῆς Ἐπαναστάσεως τοῦ 1866
κατὰ τοῦ τουρκικοῦ ζυγοῦ. Τὸ «Ἀρκαδικὸ
Δράμα», τὸ «Ὁλοκαύτωμα», γίνεται
ὁρόσημο στὴν ἑλληνικὴ καὶ παγκόσμια
ἱστορία, ποὺ ἀλλάζει τὴ ροή της καὶ
τὴν τύχη τῆς νήσου Κρήτης. Ὁ φιλικά
προσκείμενος πρός τήν ἐλευθερία
ἀμερικανικός λαός, εἶδε μέ πολύ
ἐνδιαφέρον καί συμπόνια τήν αὐτοθέλητη
θυσία τοῦ Ἀρκαδίου καί τόν διέγειρε
ψυχικά σέ ὑπέρτατο βαθμό. Οἱ Ἀμερικανοί
Μάξγουελ, Μπίτσερ, ὁ δήμαρχος
τῆς Νέας Ὑόρκης Χόφφμαν καί ὁ
γνωστός ἀπό τό 1821 ἀγωνιστής –
γιατρός Σάμουελ Χάου ἀσχολήθηκαν
ἐπισταμένως μέ τό θέμα.
Μετὰ τὸ Ὁλοκαύτωμα τοῦ
Ἀρκαδίου καὶ τὴν καταστροφὴ τῆς
Μονῆς, παρουσιάστηκαν στὴ μετέπειτα
ζωὴ της κάποιες ἀναλαμπές, ἀλλὰ
δὲν κατάφερε νὰ μὴν ἀγγίξει καὶ
τὸ τελευταῖο σκαλὶ τῆς παρακμῆς,
ἀφοῦ στὸ χρονικὸ αὐτὸ διάστημα
πολλὰ ἄλλαξαν στὴ μοίρα της,
νέες ἐλπιδοφόρες προοπτικὲς
δημιουργήθηκαν γιὰ τὸ μέλλον της,
μὲ τὴν ἔναρξη πρὸ δωδεκαετίας τῆς
διαποίμανσης τῆς Ἱερᾶς Μητροπόλεως
Ρεθύμνης καὶ Αὐλοποτάμου ἀπὸ τὸν
μακαριστό Σεβασμιώτατο Μητροπολίτη
κ. κ. Ἄνθιμο, ἀλλά καί ἕνα νέο
κεφάλαιο ἀγαθῶν ἐλπίδων διανοίγεται
μέ τήν ἀνάληψη τῆς πηδαλιουχίας
τῆς Ἱερᾶς Μητροπόλεως Ρεθύμνης καἰ
Αὐλοποτάμου ἀπό τόν ἄρτι ἐκλεγμένο
Σεβασμιώτατο Μητροπολίτη μας κ. κ.
Εὐγένιον. Ἔχουμε τήν τιμή καί εὐλογία
ἡ Μονή μας νά ἀποτελεῖ Πατριαρχική
καί Σταυροπηγιακή.
Τὸ μέλλον τῆς Μονῆς ἐξαρτᾶται
ἀπὸ τὴν πνευματικότητα καὶ ἀπὸ αὐτὸ
ποὺ θὰ μπορέσει νὰ προσφέρει στοὺς
πιστούς, στοὺς προσκυνητές, στοὺς
τουρίστες, στοὺς ἐν γένει ἐπισκέπτες
του.
Τὸ Ἀρκάδι εἶναι πανελλήνιο
προσκύνημα, ἕνα ἐθνικὸ μνημεῖο
Ὀρθοδοξίας καὶ ἐλευθερίας
παγκοσμίου ἐμβελείας.
Κάθε χρόνο γινόμαστε ἀποδέκτες
χιλιάδων ἐπισκεπτῶν. Σύμφωνα μὲ
τὶς στατιστικὲς εἴμαστε ὁ τρίτος σὲ
ἐπισκεψιμότητα χῶρος στὴν Κρήτη,
μετὰ τὴν Κνωσὸ καὶ τὴν Φαιστό.
Εἶναι αὐτὸ πειρασμός; Εἶναι αὐτὸ
πρόκληση; Εἶναι αὐτὸ πρόβλημα; ἢ

εἶναι αὐτὸ εὐλογία;
Ἐπιλέγω τὸ τελευταῖο. Εἶναι εὐλογία ποὺ ἀπορρέει μία εὐθύνη πρὸς τὸ
Θεὸ καὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἀνθρώπους πού μᾶς ἐπισκέπτονται.
Οἱ ἀλλοδαποὶ ἐπισκέπτες τῆς Μονῆς προέρχονται ἀπὸ ὅλες τὶς
χῶρες τοῦ κόσμου. Ἑπομένως τὸ μοναστήρι μας εἶναι ἕνα κέντρο ποὺ
συναντῶνται διαφορετικὲς θρησκεῖες, παραδόσεις καὶ πολιτισμοί.
Οἱ ἡμεδαποὶ εἶναι ὀργανωμένες ὁμάδες, Δημοτικὰ σχολεῖα, Γυμνάσια,
Λύκεια, Πανεπιστημιακές καί Στρατιωτικὲς Σχολὲς, στρατὸς ἀπ’ ὅλα τὰ
σώματα, συνέδρια καὶ πάρα πολὺ ἁπλοὶ ἄνθρωποι.
Μετά ἀπό τά παραπάνω, πρωταρχικό μέλημα καί ἀντικείμενο
φροντίδος τῆς Μονῆς μας εἶναι νά στελεχωθεῖ μέ κατάλληλα πρόσωπα
πού θά διαπνέονται ἀπό ὀρθόδοξο πνεῦμα καί μοναχικό φρόνημα, θά
διακατέχονται ἀπό τό αἴσθημα τῆς αὐτοθυσίας καί τῆς προσφορᾶς,
ὥστε νά μπορέσει νά ἀνταποκριθεῖ ἐπάξια καί σύμφωνα μέ τό βάρος
τοῦ ἐνδόξου ἱστορικοῦ παρελθόντος της στίς ἀνάγκες τῶν καιρῶν, νά
καταφέρει νά συνεχίσει μέ μεγαλύτερο ζῆλο καί προθυμία τό σπουδαῖο
πνευματικό, κοινωνικό καί φιλανθρωπικό ἔργο της. Ἔργο ἀπό τό ὁποῖο θά
ἐπωφελεῖται κάθε ἄνθρωπος παγκοσμίως, ἀνεξαρτήτου φυλῆς, χρώματος,
κοινωνικῆς τάξεως καί θρησκείας στή νέα ἐποχή τῆς παγκοσμιοποίησης,
τῆς πολυπολιτισμικότητας καί τῆς Ἑνωμένης Εὐρώπης. Ἐδῶ μᾶς δίνετε ἡ
εὐκαιρία νά προβάλλουμε τήν Ὀρθοδοξία μας, τήν Παράδοσή μας, τόν
Πολιτισμό μας καί τήν γλώσσα μας, χωρίς φόβο ὅτι θά μᾶς ὑποσκελίσουν
κάποιοι ἄλλοι πού ἦλθαν ἀπ΄ ἔξω, ἤ θά μᾶς ἀναγκάσουν νά προδώσουμε
τήν πίστη μας καί ὅ,τι ἄλλο ἱερό ἔχουμε. Νά διατηρήσουμε τό ὀρθόδοξο
φρόνημά μας ἀλώβητο καί καθαρό, ἀπό τήν τέλεση μιᾶς σωστῆς ἱερῆς
ἀκολουθίας μέχρι μία ἁπλή χειραψία καί ἕναν εὐγενικό χαιρετισμό.
Κέντρα καί προπύργια μέ ἕνα πολύπτυχο λαμπρό ἱστορικό παρελθόν,
ὅπως τῆς Μονῆς Ἀρκαδίου, εἶναι καθηκόντως ὑποχρεωμένα νά
ἐξωτερικέψουν καί νά ἐκφράσουν μέ τό συνολικό ἐν γένει ἔργο τους,
πέραν ἀπό τήν κοσμική οἰκονομική συνεργασία, τίς παρανοημένες

Lost or Damaged Shipments,
and Your Rights

This holiday season,
whether you are a business
owner who uses a common
carrier such as FedEx or UPS
to deliver your product to
consumers, or someone
like my sweet mother, who
sends a box filled with home
made cookies, wine, and
gifts to her elder aunts who
live in another state, it is important to know under what
circumstances a common
carrier, such as FedEx, UPS,
or another private company,
will be liable for the loss
or damage caused to your
goods during transportation.
The liability of a carrier for
damage to an interstate shipment is a matter of federal
law. Specifically, the Carmack
Amendment to the Interstate
Commerce Act imposes liability on a carrier for loss or
damage to goods transported
by it. In an action to recover
from a carrier for damage
to a shipment, the shipper
must show: 1) delivery to the
carrier in good condition; 2)
arrival in damaged condition,
or lost shipment; and 3) the
amount of damages caused
by the loss. Below are some
points a shipper should keep
in mind.
First, make sure to secure
a clean bill of lading. A bill of
lading creates an automatic
presumption that the goods
were delivered to the carrier
in good condition, which is
the first element a plaintiff
must prove if the goods are
damaged or lost. However,
be careful when shipping
goods in sealed containers,
since the favorable presumption created by a bill of lading
does not apply. The courts
have explained that with
sealed containers the carrier
is prevented from observing
the damaged condition had it
existed when the goods were
delivered, and without observing the goods the carrier
cannot issue a bill of lading
which notes any pre-existing
defects. To avoid this trap,
make sure the employee of
the carrier is able to observe
the good condition of the
goods and note this on the
bill of lading.
Second, whoever is
receiving the goods should
immediately inspect them in
front of the person delivering them. Make sure any
and all defects and items
not delivered are noted and
objected to immediately.
Although the law does not
require that you file a claim
against the carrier for the
loss or damage to the goods
immediately, your objections must be made within
a reasonable period of time
following delivery, or within
the time agreed upon in the
shipping contract. Accordingly, it is better to examine
the items and object, if
needed, sooner rather than
later. Additionally, do not
sign any document which
states that you have ex-
amined the shipment and
acknowledge the good condition of the shipped goods.
Third, if you are shipping items of value, make
sure to declare the value
to the shipper at the time
of shipment, and purchase
any additional insurance
if necessary. Under the
Carmack Amendment a
common carrier is liable
“for the actual loss or injury
to the property.” However,
under the Amendment a
carrier may limit its liability
for loss, damage or injury to
goods entrusted to it to an
agreed-upon declared value
of the property, such as by
insuring the goods for a
specified amount. If you fail
to declare the value, your
damages or recovery from
the carrier will be limited to
an amount set by the carrier
in its shipping terms and
conditions, which may very
well be an amount much
less than the actual value of
the goods.
Finally, note that the
defendant can avoid liability
only if he or she is able to
show: 1) it was not negligent
in transporting the shipment; and 2) the shipment
was actually damaged
because of either (a) the
act of God; (b) the public
enemy; (c) the act of the
shipper himself; (d) public
authority; or (e) the inherent
vice or nature of the goods.
The one most commonly
asserted is “the act of the
shipper” exception, whereby
the carrier blames the shipper for failing to pack and/
or prepare the package
for shipment according to
methods required by the
carrier. Although many
people prefer to prepare the
shipment themselves, in the
privacy of their business or
home, asking an employee
of the carrier to package
the goods makes the above
defense of the carrier much
more difficult to assert and
less likely to succeed.
Although the Carmack
Amendment was signed into
law in 1906, shippers and
common carriers continue to
push the limits of the law in
order to recover damages or
avoid liability. Keep in mind
the recommended actions
discussed in this article, and
if you experience issues as a
shipper make sure to contact
an attorney who can evaluate your right to recover
against the carrier.

Venezelos, paid a visit to the Brotherhood of Omonia Club in New York.

Δύο Κρητικοί αναμετριούνται
με το σύμπαν
Δυο αδέλφια που γεννήθηκαν στην «Ελλάδα του
πολέμου», μεγάλωσαν στην «Ελλάδα της φτώχειας και
της φυγής», πήραν τον δρόμο της ξενιτιάς, όπως τόσοι και
τόσοι άλλοι, και σήμερα «επιστρέφουν» στην «Ελλάδα
της κρίσης», ως σπουδαίοι, αναγνωρισμένοι παγκοσμίως
επιστήμονες, για να μας πουν την ιστορία τους.
Ο Φώτης (αριστερά) και ο Μηνάς (δεξιά) γίνονται ένας
άνθρωπος όταν αναφέρονται στον πατέρα τους. Ο Φώτης

εδώ. Ο μεγαλύτερος αδερφός, Αντώνης, και πολλοί
συγγενείς. Υπάρχει ο επιστημονικός κόσμος, με τον οποίο
δεν έκοψαν ποτέ επαφή και συνεργασία. Και υπάρχει,
πάντα, η Κρήτη.
Ο πατέρας τους, Κώστας, γεννήθηκε σε ένα μικρό
χωριό της περιοχής Αμάρι, στη νοτιοδυτική πλευρά του
Ψηλορείτη, στο νομό Ρεθύμνου. Εφυγε από εκεί το 1920,
στα 14 του, και πήγε στην Αμερική, να μάθει τον κόσμο,
όπως έλεγε, και να γυρίσει σπουδασμένος στη πατρίδα του.
Τα δύο του αγόρια, «οι επιστήμονες του εξωτερικού»,
γίνονται ένας άνθρωπος όταν αναφέρονται στον πατέρα
τους. Ο ένας (δεν έχει σημασία ποιος) μιλάει, και ακούγεται
η φωνή του. Ταυτόχρονα, ο άλλος ανοιγοκλείνει το στόμα
σαν να λέει τα ίδια ακριβώς λόγια, άσχετα εάν αυτά δεν
ακούγονται.
«Ηταν άνθρωπος διορατικός, φιλόδοξος, αυστηρός,
πεισματάρης, εργατικός και οραματιστής», μας λένε.
Είχε, δηλαδή, εκείνην τη γρανιτένια προσωπικότητα
που σμίλεψε γενιές επί γενεών Ελλήνων, που έφυγαν από
την πατρίδα με τα βαπόρια της ξενιτιάς προς προορισμούς
άγνωστους. Ηξεραν όμως πολύ καλά πού πήγαιναν και τι
ήθελαν να πετύχουν.

Λίγα λεφτά, πλούσια ζωή
Ο Κώστας Καφάτος, με «μηδενικά» αγγλικά, πήγε
σχολείο στη Νέα Υόρκη, όπου δεν είχε πια την πολυτέλεια
να είναι παιδί. «Αποστολή του ήταν μόνο το διάβασμα.
Η μάθηση», μας λένε, πάλι με ένα στόμα, οι δύο του,
ξενιτεμένοι και αυτοί σήμερα, γιοι.
Καθώς ακούω την ταυτόσημη αφήγησή τους, μπροστά
μου σχηματίζεται η εικόνα πολλών παιδιών μεταναστών
που σήμερα φοιτούν στα δικά μας σχολεία και που,
μια παράξενη δύναμη (ίσως εκείνη της μοίρας κάθε
ξενιτεμένου), τα υποχρεώνει να επιτύχουν.
Οταν οι άλλοι έπαιζαν, ο «κύριος Κώστας» μελετούσε.
Οταν οι άλλοι αναπαύονταν, εκείνος εργαζόταν σκληρά.
Σπούδασε γεωπόνος στο φημισμένο Πανεπιστήμιο
του Κορνέλ. Γύρισε στη πατρίδα του 30 χρόνων και έγινε
επιθεωρητής Γεωργίας. Το όνειρό του ήταν να φτιάξει Σχολή
Γεωπονικής για τα αγροτόπαιδα, και να αναδασώσει όλο το
νησί.
«Αυτό το τελευταίο δεν το ολοκλήρωσε», μας λέει ο
Μηνάς Καφάτος. «Και έτσι μένει σε μας, που η προστασία
του περιβάλλοντος είναι ένας τομέας στον οποίο έχουμε
αφοσιωθεί πολύ τα τελευταία χρόνια, να υλοποιήσουμε
αυτό το όραμα, ιδίως τώρα μετά την καταστροφή τόσων
δασικών εκτάσεων».
Στο Ηράκλειο φοίτησαν στο Λύκειο «Κοραής». Ο
Φώτης είχε κατασταλάξει από τα 14 του ότι θα σπουδάσει
βιολογία, και μόλις αποφοίτησε έφυγε για Αμέρικα.
Η Κρήτη που άφησε πίσω ήταν σαν μία υπόσχεση που
κρατάς σφιγμένη μέσα σου, με αγάπη, και περιμένεις να
‘ρθει η μέρα να την δεις να εκπληρώνεται.
Ηταν δύσκολη, αλλά και ωραία, η ζωή τους τότε στο
Ηράκλειο, όπου οι γονείς τους είχαν αναπτύξει έναν κύκλο
ανθρώπων των γραμμάτων και των τεχνών. Η μητέρα
τους ήταν δασκάλα. Ο πατέρας είχε, μέσα στις τόσες
άλλες δραστηριότητές του, και μεγάλη αφοσίωση στην
αρχαιολογία. Κάθε Κυριακή, μετά τη Θεία Λειτουργία,
επισκέπτονταν οικογενειακώς το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο του
Ηρακλείου.
Γνωρίστηκαν με όλους τους αρχαιολόγους που έκαναν
ανασκαφές στην Κνωσό, και στον κύκλο των φίλων τους
προστέθηκαν ο Νίκος Καζαντζάκης και η γυναίκα του
Γαλάτεια.
Πιστεύουν στην Ελλάδα
«Εχοντας ζήσει τη φρίκη του πολέμου, γίναμε όλοι
αντιπολεμιστές. Ποτέ δεν συμφιλιωθήκαμε με την ιδέα
ότι οι διαφορές μεταξύ ανθρώπων και λαών πρέπει να
λύνονται με τα όπλα. Μέσα μας βεβαίως, η αγάπη για
τη πατρίδα ήταν πάντοτε ανθισμένη. Ημασταν, όλη η
οικογένεια, βενιζελικοί. Κεντρώοι. Ποτέ δεξιοί, ποτέ
αριστεροί. Πιστεύαμε και πιστεύουμε βαθιά στην ιδέα της
Ελλάδας, και στην παράδοση του πολιτισμού της. Ολα αυτά
έφτιαξαν το νοητικό περιβάλλον στο οποίο μεγαλώσαμε, τα
τρία αγόρια», λέει ο Φώτης, που τον είχαμε «αφήσει» να
σπουδάζει βιολογία στο Κορνέλ.
Εκεί τον ακολούθησε ύστερα από λίγα χρόνια ο Μηνάς,

που άφησε κατά μέρος τις πρώτες καλλιτεχνικές του
ανησυχίες και τις πιθανές σπουδές στο Παρίσι, και διάλεξε
να ακολουθήσει τη φυσική και, ειδικώς, την αστροφυσική.
«Τον Φώτη τον τραβούσε πάντα το γήινο. Γι’ αυτό
και κατέληξε στη βιολογία, να κάθεται με τις ώρες στα
εργαστήρια και να μελετά έντομα και σκουλήκια. Εγώ,
πάλι, στράφηκα προς τον ουρανό. Πάντα με τραβούσε ο
γαλαξίας. Οταν πήγε ο Φώτης στην Αμερική, μου έστειλε
δώρο ένα κατοπτρικό τηλεσκόπιο και άρχισα να κοιτώ και
να μελετώ τα άστρα».
Ο Φώτης ήταν κοντύτερα, επιστημονικά, στον πατέρα
του. Γεωπόνος εκείνος, κοίταζε ό,τι ήταν ζωντανό. Τα
δέντρα, το δάσος, τα φυτά, το χώμα.
«Αρχικά, ήθελα να γίνω αρχαιολόγος. Κάθε Κυριακή
που πηγαίναμε στο μουσείο, παρατηρούσα τους
σφραγιδόλιθους και τα αγγεία. Μέσω της αρχαιολογίας
στράφηκα και προς την τέχνη. Η βιολογία, που επέλεξα
τελικά, δεν ήταν αποκομμένη απ’ όλα αυτά. Πάντα με
ενδιέφερε, μελετώντας την Αρχαία Ελλάδα, να δω τις
αλλαγές των γενεών και πώς, μέσω αυτών, εξελισσόταν ο
κόσμος στον οποίο σήμερα ζούμε. Από εκεί, στα άγουρά
μου χρόνια, έφτασα σήμερα, στα πιο ώριμά μου, να
ασχολούμαι με την ιδέα της εξέλιξης. Την εξέλιξη του
σύμπαντος».
Εδώ, τώρα, η επιστήμη έρχεται να συναντήσει την πίστη.
Οι αδελφοί Καφάτοι είναι αφοσιωμένοι υπηρέτες της
πρώτης. Δεν θεωρούν τίποτα δεδομένο εάν δεν αποδειχθεί
ότι είναι. Το «πίστευε και μη ερεύνα» δεν είναι δόγμα που
αποδέχονται.
Από την άλλη, όμως, «η πίστη μας στον Θεό έχει να
κάνει με την παράδοσή μας, και έχει πλέον γίνει προσωπικό
βίωμα, εντελώς ανεξάρτητο από την επιστήμη μας», λένε
Η θρησκεία είναι συναίσθημα
Η «απολογία» τους αρχίζει από αυτό που ο εξελικτικός
βιολόγος (δηλαδή συνάδελφος του Φώτη Καφάτου), Τσαρλς
Ντόκινς, ονόμασε «περί Θεού αυταπάτη».
«Η θρησκεία είναι προσωπική υπόθεση του καθενός.
Δεν χρειάζεται να αποδείξεις τίποτα. Αφορά το τι
αισθάνεσαι. Τι σε παρακινεί. Τι σου δίνει δύναμη. Εγώ,
συγκινούμαι, κλαίω, προσεύχομαι, ψάλλω. Λειτουργίες που
δεν μπορώ να εκδηλώσω στην επιστήμη μου, όπου άλλα
συναισθήματα κυριαρχούν», μας λέει ο Φώτης Καφάτος, ο
βιολόγος.
Και συνεχίζει ο Μηνάς, ο αστροφυσικός.
Ο πιο... ουράνιος:
«Επιστήμη και θρησκεία έχουν ένα κοινό σημείο: την
αγάπη και τη συμπόνια για τον κόσμο. Να κάνουμε το
καλύτερο που μπορούμε για τον συνάνθρωπό μας και τον
πλανήτη στον οποίο ζούμε. Να αφήσουμε κάτι πίσω μας ως
θετική προσφορά στην Ιστορία της ανθρωπότητας. Οπως
λέει ο ποιητής, να σηκώσουμε τον ήλιο λίγο ψηλότερα».
Κυκλοφόρησε πρόσφατα το βιβλίο «The Grand Design»,
στο οποίο ο φημισμένος άγγλος φυσικός Στίβεν Χόκινγκ

ισχυρίζεται ότι «Θεός δεν υπάρχει» και ότι «ο κόσμος μας
δεν χρειάζεται κανέναν Θεό για να ζήσει».
«Είναι αδιανόητο», συμπληρώνει, «πριν ξεκινήσει
κάποιος το πρωί για τη δουλειά, να ζητά πρώτα την ευλογία
του Θεού».
Αρθρο-απάντηση στον Χόκινγκ έγραψαν ο Μηνάς
Καφάτος με τον Ντίπακ Τσόπρα, Ινδοαμερικανό, που
ξεκίνησε ως ενδοκρινολόγος, και τελικά στράφηκε στην
εναλλακτική ιατρική και σ’ αυτό που ο ίδιος ονομάζει
«ιατρική του σώματος και του νου».
Στο άρθρο τους, που αναδημοσιεύεται στην ηλεκτρονική

Χόκινγκ «μας οδηγεί σε ένα ταξίδι στην άκρη του “τίποτα”».
«Και εάν αυτό το “τίποτα”», συνεχίζουν, «τροφοδοτεί
την ανθρώπινη επιθυμία να αναζητεί κάποιος νόημα στη
ζωή του, πώς μπορεί τότε αυτή η επιθυμία, όπως λέει ο
Χόκινγκ, να είναι δίχως νόημα; Επίσης, εάν το σύμπαν,
όπως διατείνεται, λειτουργεί τυχαία, απρογραμμάτιστα,
και εάν αυτό το τυχαίο και απρογραμμάτιστο δημιούργησε
τον ανθρώπινο εγκέφαλο που κάνει ένα σωρό από μη
τυχαία και καθόλου απρογραμμάτιστα πράγματα (όπως
π.χ. να συγγράφει ένας Σέξπιρ, και να λέει «σ’αγαπώ»), πώς
γίνεται τότε το “δίχως σκοπό” να γεννά το “έχων σκοπό και
νόημα”;».
Η κρίση
Είχαμε «σχεδιάσει» να μιλήσουμε και για την κρίση,
αλλά δεν χρειάστηκε. Οσα ακούσαμε από τα δύο αδέλφια
«κάλυψαν» και αυτό το θέμα, χωρίς να αναφερθούν σε
σπρεντ, ελλείμματα, μνημόνια, μέτρα, επενδύσεις και
ανάπτυξη.
Τους στενοχωρεί η εικόνα «του εξυπνάκια Ελληνα,
που νομίζει ότι τα ξέρει όλα». Τους αποτρέπει όποιο
μεταρρυθμιστικό σχέδιο περιοριστεί ξανά στην «αναζήτηση
στέγης του ασύλου», ή σε τρόπους να αποφασίζουν και οι
φοιτητές για το ποιοι θα τους διδάσκουν. Τους ανησυχεί
«μια χώρα που αποκόπηκε από το διάβασμα, και έμεινε
στην αποστήθιση». Τους προβληματίζει που «κανείς δεν
έχει σκεφτεί ότι τα παιδιά που γεννιούνται τώρα, θα
αλλάξουν επαγγελματική καριέρα έξι φορές σε όλη τους τη
ζωή». Και τους εκπλήττει που δεν έχουμε ακόμα καταλάβει
«ότι είμαστε απλώς homo sapiens. Ούτε θεοί, ούτε
τίποτα. Απλώς σκεφτόμαστε. Εχουμε μόνο τον νου μας, το
μεγαλύτερό μας όπλο σ’ αυτόν τον κόσμο», τον μικρό τον
μέγα...

Εχει ασχοληθεί ιδιαιτέρως με την ανάπτυξη της
ελονοσίας, που ακόμα σκοτώνει 1-3 εκατομμύρια
ανθρώπους κάθε χρόνο, κυρίως μικρά παιδιά
στην υπο-σαχάρια Αφρική. Πήρε το πρώτο του
πτυχίο στο Cornell, και έκανε το διδακτορικό του
στο Harvard. Εχει διδάξει στα Πανεπιστήμια της
Αθήνας και της Κρήτης, και θεωρείται «ο πατέρας
της βιολογίας στην Ελλάδα».

Cretan Association
of the Carolinas “Psiloritis”
Established in March of 2001 by a determined John
Datseris (Currently District 7 Governor), our Cretan association of the Carolinas Psiloritis” had a membership of 61. Our
association was created with the vision of Mr. John Datseris.
When he moved to North Carolina, he immediately went
into action to establish a Cretan association. He was at the
Naples, Florida board meeting in January 2001, where he
met with past PAA President George Vardakis. Mr. Vardakis
encouraged him to talk with Kostas Tsiskakis, the then District 7 Governor. After processing all the necessary paperwork and red tape, the Chapter “Psiloritis” of the Carolinas,
was born.
With Mr. Datseris’ return from Florida, he composed
a letter and an application form for membership. He sent
these documents to all the local Greek Orthodox Churches
in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Not receiving
many results, he decided to personally visit numerous Greek
Orthodox Churches. During their “coffee hour”, fellowship

was made with the participants at the Church. He obtained
a church directory in order to try to identify Cretan families. After doing so and with the available information,
he contacted many of the individuals personally. With his
perseverance in growing the membership, “PSILORITIS” of
the Carolinas was coming to life.
The initial membership was 61 members. Currently, our
association includes 41 Families (82 people), 20 Singles, 7
students and one associate member, totaling 110 members.
Our membership drive never ceases, continuing to reach
out in trying to recruit and distribute information regarding
the PAA and its nationwide chapters.
Our first function as a chapter was a meeting at Mr.
Evgenitakis’ restaurant. Present at that meeting were Mr.
Evgenitakis, Mr. Datseris, Mr. Kanelakis, Roula Zaharakis
and Ritsa Neary, all Charlotte, N.C., Cretans. They held an
election and voted Mr. Datseris as President, Nick Evenitakis, Vice President, and Ritsa Neary as Secretary. During

that meeting, our mission, business and By-laws were
discussed along with the need to establish a concrete
organization. We also chose the name “PSILORITIS” as
the chapter name. In their view, it was chosen to fairly
represent all Cretans who are with us. True born Cretans
can visualize the “Majestic Mountain” in our homeland,
KPHTH (Crete).
June 2001, a General Assembly meeting was held at
Mr. and Mrs. Zaharakis’ home, where other board members were appointed and elected. A vote by the General
Assembly confirmed the name “PSILORITIS” of the Carolinas as our official name. Mr. Kokolakis, District Seven
Governor was present and offered his complete support,
along with the PAA’s.
Our first dinner dance was planned and became a reality on September 8th, 2001. Many Cretan-Americans,
Greek-Americans and our American friends attended. Cretan food (katsiki with rice and other delicacies) provided
by our local chefs, Roula Zaharakis and Nick Evgenitakis,
continues to this day, to be the best Cretan food available
anywhere. Not only did our Syllogo prepare the food, but
it also provided the home-made desserts, including kaltsounakia, kserotigana, and other Cretan delicacies. Along
with Tsikoudia and Cretan wine, our dinner dance held
to the true Cretan traditions. The music was provided by
Kostas Filippakis on Lyra and Niko Mastrokalo and Mr.
Manouselis on laouto, as well as the DJ for the evening,
DJ Stathakis from Florida.
Throughout the years, professionals from the island
of Crete have graced our presence. Dance troupes from
Pennsylvania were the first dancers who came to perform
at our inaugural dance in September 2001 and the Florida
dance group, Drosoulites has been performing at our dinner dances every year since then. Over the past 10 years,
our annual dinner dance events have become a landmark
in the local Greek-American community as parishioners
throughout the Charlotte area’s Greek Orthodox Churches
have joined us to celebrate our Cretan traditions of song and
dance.
Our philanthropic efforts are never-ending. Thanks to
the hard work of our past and present board members and
all our members with their hard work in planning our dinner
dance year after year. Their commitment and dedication
in helping Philoptochos, the handicap school in Iraklion,
AHEPA, Velouchi, fire and flood relief efforts in Greece and,
of course, our local churches, Holy Trinity and St. Nektarios.
Our support to St. Nektarios was promulgated with the installation of St. Minas and St. Titos medallions in the church.
On our 10th anniversary, we continue our traditions.
Chapter “Psiloritis” of the Carolinas has been an inspiration
to all Greek-Americans in the Carolinas. Anyone can identify
a Cretan in the way we talk and act.
This year, our annual dinner dance will be held on the
second week of November. We expect this year’s dinner
dance to be a very special one, since, not only will we be
celebrating our 10th year of existence, but, also, are hosting the PAA’s national board meeting. May God give us the
strength and insight to continue for the next ten years.
A special appreciation and thank you goes out to the fellow board members and associate members who work very
hard and diligently every year to make sure that we continue
our progress and remain successful.

Σωματεία. Στο μεγάλο πλήθος των παρευρισκομένων
μεγάλη κατάπληξη έκαναν τα τρία χορευτικά που με μεγάλη
δεξιοτεχνία και χάρη παρουσίασαν αυθεντικούς Κρητικούς
χορούς κάτω από την μουσική του Μανώλη Κονταρού και
του συγκροτήματος του πού ήρθαν για το σκοπό αυτό από
την Κρήτη. Το κέφι ήταν πολύ και η διασκέδαση κράτησε
μέχρι της πρωινές ώρες.
Ο σύλλογος μας ανακοινώνει ότι η προθεσμία υποβολής
αιτήσεων για στην Επιτροπή Υποτροφιών λήγει την 1
Δεκεμβρίου 2010.
Ο σκοπός της Επιτροπής Υποτροφιών είναι η ανάπτυξη
του πολιτιστικού και επιστημονικού ενδιαφέροντος των
Ελληνοαμερικανών φοιτητών πάνω στην Κρητική ιστορία,
πολιτισμό καθώς και στα επιτεύγματα των προγόνων τους.
Οι προϋποθέσεις που πρέπει να τηρούν οι υποψήφιοι
φοιτητές είναι οι εξής: (1) Να είναι εγγεγραμμένοι σε
αναγνωρισμένο εκπαιδευτικό ίδρυμα σε προπτυχιακό
ή μεταπτυχιακό (ΜΒA. MS, MBA. PHD, DDS, MD, JD)
πρόγραμμα, (2) Να είναι το πολύ 26 ετών την ημερομηνία
προθεσμίας υποβολής αιτήσεων 1 Δεκεμβρίου 2010),
( 3) Να είναι ενεργά μέλη των Συλλόγων μας (Ομόνοια,
Πασιφάη, Λάβρης) τακτοποιημένα για τουλάχιστον τα
δύο προηγούμενα έτη, (4) Αν φοιτούν σε προπτυχιακό
πρόγραμμα να έχουν ελάχιστο μέσο όρο σημείου βαθμού
((GPA) 3.3 (Β+) σε όλους τους τομείς εκπαίδευσης,
(5) πρέπει να συμπληρώνουν πλήρως τις κατωτέρω
πληροφορίες της αίτησης που μπορούν να προμηθευτούν
επικοινωνώντας με τον σύλλογο μας, (6) Κάθε υποψήφιος
πρέπει να ερευνήσει, μελετήσει και να γράψει ένα δοκίμιο
τουλάχιστον 500 λέξεων με θέμα την πολιτιστική και
ιστορική σημασία ενός από τα παρακάτω προτεινόμενα
θέματα: Νίκος Καζαντζάκης, Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος,
Μάχη της Κρήτης (WWII), Μίκης Θεοδωράκης, Δομίνικος
Θεοτοκόπουλος (EL Greco), Αρχαία Κρήτη.
Άλλα θέματα σχετικά με την Κρήτη θα γίνονται
αποδεκτά μόνο αν έχουν προ-εγκριθεί από την Επιτροπή
Υποτροφιών.
Μέχρι δέκα σπουδαστές που καλύπτουν όλες τις
απαιτήσεις και που έχουν το υψηλότερο CGPA θα λάβουν
από $ 1.000.

This event
was a pleasant
experience as Mums, Wine, and Cretan aprons were raffled
off as gifts to our seniors. Lastly, a relevant greek movie, The
Brides, was enjoyed.
Members of our Knossos Chapter worked together to
shop, cook, decorate, welcome, assist and serve the guests.
This charitable event was well worth the effort and time,
as we honored the seniors who have given so much to our
community. The event was greatly appreciated by all of us.

Sunday June 27th a SURPRISE Gala party was held
in their honor, hosted by
Julie Maskow, (Eleni’s sister) and Mr. & Mrs. Peter
Gugliotta at our very own
Leshi, the Cretan Party Center. Along with their children,
Nathan, Alissa and Sophia, there were over 100 friends and
relatives in attendance to celebrate this milestone in their
lives. Nathan is in his third year at Wright State University
in Dayton, OH and Alissa in her first year at the University
of Dayton. Needless to say this was quite a surprise for John
and Eleni, even though their children knew. John and Eleni
would like to thank John’s uncles and their wives who traveled from Washington DC to celebrate with them. Many
thanks to Eleni’s cousins, Maria Doukakis and her children
Stavroula, Sophia and Antonia from Katonah, New York
and George and Michelle Marnelakis and their children,
Eftihi, Mihali and Xristina, from Danbury, Connecticut. Their

the traditional Greek wedding dance and everyone joined in
the fun. The surprise of the night was when Jim played the
Maleveziotiko and George Marnelakis and his sons, Eftihi
and Mihali gave quite a presentation of their dancing skills.
Eftihi and Mihali are in the dance group in the Springfield,
MA area. To John and Eleni and their children we wish them
many more years of good health and happiness and may
God continue to bestow His blessings upon them.
PICNIC
Our traditional July 4th picnic was changed to July 3rd
this year, due to many conflicting events on the fourth. Even
though the date was changed, it was so nice to see so many
people attend. Our caterers, Steve and John, prepared the
Gyro, Souvlaki, Pastitsio, and Greek Salad in excellent fashion.
The Karizma Orchestra played continuously throughout the
day providing traditional Greek and some Cretan dance songs.
Mary Regan, chair of the Pastry Department, would like to
thank all the ladies who baked the delectable pastries sold at
her booth and for all who helped. Currency from the pastry is
all profit, so these women deserve a big thank you. On behalf
of the Officers, Board Members and the entire membership
thanks to all who attended making this event a success.

A very long time member of our Cretan Association, Mrs.
Sophia Kopasakis, beloved wife of Andreas, entered into
eternal rest after a short illness. She is the loving mother
of George and Popi Kopasakis, John and Lynn Kopasakis
and Cathy and Spero Paterakis. Sophia was the treasured
YiaYia of Manolis, Sophia, Andreas, Yannis, Nicholas,
Sophia, Kristina and Avgero, and dear sister of Paul Kantos
of Cleveland and Katina and Aspasia of Greece, aunt and
great aunt of many. Her funeral service was sung at the
Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Friday, September
17, Father Dean Dimon officiating. Mrs. Kopasakis will be
greatly missed by all members, as she was always willing to
bake time after time for all the events we had and attending
all meetings before her illness. Her smiling face and giving
heart shall always be remembered. MEMORY ETERNAL.
GET WELL WISHES
We wish a speedy recovery to George Elliott, Gus Corpas
and Liz Hohlakis who were recently hospitalized and are now
home convalescing. Our prayers are with George, Gus, and
Liz. May God restore them back to good health.

γενέθλια του Εμμανουήλ. Η πρόταση έλαβε μέρος προτού
ξεκινήσει ο δείπνος, αφήνοντας φυσικά έκπληκτη τη
Χρυσοβαλάντου καθώς επίσης και τους γονείς. Εντός όλης
αυτής της χαράς και της έκπληξης, το ζεύγος συμφώνησε
στη τέλεση του γάμου τους στις 7 Μαΐου, 2011. Ο
Εμμανουήλ και η Χρυσοβαλάντου γνωρίστηκαν το 2008, σε
εορτασμό γάμου ενός φίλου, και από τότε ήσαν αχώριστο
ζευγάρι. Τους ευχόμαστε να ζήσουν πάντα ευτυχισμένοι και
καλά τους στέφανα!

She has also done a Missionary Service trip to Guyana doing
dental examination and surgical procedures on underserved
children. Currently, she is an adjunct Professor at Old Dominion University.
Dr. Maria Bredologos Mendrinos was born in Chania,
Crete. Her parents are Alexandros and Evangelia Bredologos from Askifou and Loutro, Sfakia, Crete. Her husband is
Dr Savvas Mendrinos from Santorini Greece and she has
three children Eleftherios, Antonia and Alexandros. She is
an active member of the “Omalos” chapter and is the Youth
Advisor of the Norfolk “Sfakia” Youth.

Light the Night Walk
Rio, Marina and
Marcus Maropis
participated in
the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society’s annual Light
the Night Walk
at Heinz Field on
Tuesday September 28, 2010. They
walk annually in memory of their mother, Melanie, who was
diagnosed with leukemia in October of 2005 and succumbed
to the disease in December of 2006. Rio captains the team
of walkers and has been recognized annually as a “Bright
Light” for having raised over $1,000 each of the past four
years. All told, Melanie’s Team has raised just over $8,000
for current and future blood cancer research.

Station Restaurant. The buffet
was enjoyed by
adults and chil-
dren alike. Andrew & Liberty Pyros organized the smooth

train ride social to perhaps a further destination. We also
thank our President Faith Trillis Williard who kept us on
“track” and did not leave anyone behind.
The Arkadi-Maleme Chapter is

one of our active members, Helen
Kouklakis Kairys. Helen passed
away on September 19, 2010. She
was born on February 19,1928 in
Canonsburg, PA and was preceeded in death by her husband James
Kairys. Her parents, Petros and
Maria (Stavroulakis) Kouklakis were
from Kefala,Crete. Deceased also
are sister Katherine Kouklakis and
brothers Manuel and George. Surviving is her sister Stella
(John) Tsinetakis of the White Mountain Chapter, sister Elizabeth and brothers John & Steve, all of the Arkadi-Maleme
Chapter and brother Petros (Janet) Kouklakis. She is also
survived by Pat Kouklakis, sister-in-law and several nieces

Νικολάου και της Μαρίας, με καταγωγή από το Παϊδοχώρι

Χανίων, νικημένος από την επάρατη ασθένεια.
Ο εκλιπών είχε γεννηθεί στο Helper της Γιούτα των
ΗΠΑ, το 1920, από γονείς οικονομικούς μετανάστες,
επέστρεψε στην Ελλάδα το 1923, μαζί με τους γονείς του
και τον ηλικίας ενός έτους αδερφό του, Σταύρο. Ήταν το
μεγαλύτερο παιδί φτωχής και πολυμελούς οικογένειας
(πέντε παιδιά) - Νίκος, Σταύρος, Αναστασία, Γεωργία,
Γιώργης. Τη μεγαλύτερη αδερφή του Αναστασία, που της
έτρεφε ιδιαίτερη αγάπη και που πέθανε πριν από ένα
χρόνο, είχα την τύχη και την ευλογία να έχω μάνα, γι’ αυτό
και είμαι σε θέση να γνωρίζω λεπτομέρειες της διαδρομής
του.
Κατά τη διάρκεια της κατοχής έλαβε ενεργό μέρος στην
Εθνική Αντίσταση, κυρίως στις περιοχές του Αποκόρωνα
και της oρεινής Κυδωνιάς, οργανώθηκε στις τάξεις του
ΕΛΑΣ και υπηρέτησε στο 14ο Σύνταγμα Πεζικού από
τις 20 Φεβρουαρίου 1941 έως 16 Μαΐου 1945, ενώ το
απολυτήριο του, για το οποίο υπερηφανευόταν στους
ομογενείς της δεύτερης και τρίτης γενιάς, υπογράφεται
από τον αντισυνταγματάρχη
Στυλιανό Σφακιωτάκη και έχει
ημερομηνία; «Θέρισσο, 15-51945».
Το 1946 μαζί με τον
αδερφό του Σταύρο, έχοντας
την αμερικανική ιθαγένεια,
επέστρεψαν εύκολα στις ΗΠΑ,
για αναζήτηση καλύτερης
τύχης, όπου εγκαταστάθηκαν
στο Σαν Φραντσίσκο, κοντά
στον αδερφό της μητέρας
τους Ιωάννη Μυλωνάκη (John
Milon), ο οποίος τους είχε υπό
την προσταία του.
«Με πέτρες Μαδαρίτικες, χώμα απ’ τον Ψηλορείτη,
στο Σαν Φραντσίσκο σκόρπισε και το ‘κανε όλο Κρήτη».
Συνέδεσε τη ζωή του με μια εξαίρετη σύζυγο, την
αφοσιωμένη του Τερψιχόρη, κόρη της γνωστής οικογένειας
του Δημήτρη Νικολουζάκη, από το Νιο Χωριό Αποκορώνου,
με την οποία έζησε χρόνια ευτυχισμένα. Απέκτησε δύο
παιδιά, το Νίκο, συνταξιούχο υπάλληλο σήμερα παντρεμένο
με τη Ludy και τη Μαρία, οικονομολόγο, απόφοιτη του
Πανεπιστημίου του Berkley, σύζυγο του Δημητρίου
Βαβουράκη, από την Κρύα Βρύση Ρεθύμνου, από την οποία
ο εκλιπών αξιώθηκε και μεγάλωσε δύο εγγόνια, τον Andrews και το Nickolas, που τα υπεραγαπούσε.
Εργάστηκε σκληρά ως ιδιωτικός υπάλληλος αλλά και
στην προσωπική του επιχείρηση, αποκατέστησε τα παιδιά
του, ενώ πρόσφερε και σημαντική οικονομική βοήθεια στα
αδέρφια και τα ανίψια του στα Χανιά, και γι’ αυτό πιστεύω
ότι όλοι μας θα τον ευγνωμονούμε.
Υπήρξε δραστήριο μέλος συλλόγων της ομογένειας

και ιδιαίτερα της «Παγκρητικής Αμερικής», στα συνέδρια
της οποίας, όπου και όποτε αυτά διεξάγονταν, συμμετείχε
ενεργά και ανελλιπώς.
Υπεραγαπούσε την Κρήτη και ιδιαίτερα τα Χανιά, τα
οποία επισκεπτόταν πολύ συχνά με τη σύζυγο του και τα
παιδιά τους, όταν ήταν μικρά, για να βρεθούν με συγγενείς
και φίλους τους, με τελευταίο του ταξίδι στα τέλη του
περασμένου Ιουλίου, όπου κατά τη διάρκεια της παραμονής
του ασθένησε. Νοσηλεύτηκε στο Γενικό Νοσοκομείο Χανίων
και αναγκάστηκε να επιστρέψει πιο σύντομα στην Αμερική,
απ’ όπου δύο μήνες μετά διέσχισε τα ήρεμα νερά της
Αχερουσίας λίμνης, χωρίς να έχει ανάγκη πορθμείων και
πραγματοποίησε το τελευταίο του ταξίδι στην αιωνιότητα.
Προικισμένος με σπάνιες αρετές, ήταν χωρίς υπερβολή
η προσωποποίηση της καλοσύνης, της φιλίας και της
φιλοξενίας, καθώς στο σπίτι του είχαν φιλοξενηθεί πάρα
πολλοί συγγενείς αλλά και φίλοι - επισκέπτες από την
Ελλάδα, καθώς και καλλιτέχνες της κρητικής μουσικής.
Ήταν ευγενέστατος και συγκέντρωνε όλα τα χαρακτηριστικά
που συνι¬στούν τον τέλειο άνθρωπο. Είχε καρδιά μικρού
παιδιού, γεμάτη απλότητα, καλοσύνη, αλτρουισμό,
ανιδιοτέλεια, διάθεση προσφοράς χωρίς ανταπόδοση,
ψυχή λεβέντη Κρητικού γεμάτη ευθύτητα και ντομπροσύνη.
Ο Μεγαλοδύναμος θα τον αναπαύσει μετά των δικαίων
και θα χαρίσει στους δικούς του ζωή και υγεία για να τον
θυμούνται χρόνους πολλούς.
Οι συγγενείς, οι επιζώντες συναγωνιστές του στο ΕΛΑΣ
και οι αναρίθμητοι φίλοι του είναι βέβαιο πως δεν θα τον
ξεχάσουμε ποτέ, όπως λέει και μια κρητική μαντινάδα:
«Σαν αποθάνει ο άνθρωπος, αν είχε και χατίρι
οι φίλοι του δεν τον ξεχνούν κι ο χρόνος δεν τον φθείρει».
Ας είναι αιωνία του η μνήμη.

Annual Picnic/ Golf Tournament
Last August, The Minos Chapter of Salt Lake City held
its second annual Golf Tournament at Mountain Dell Golf
Course. There
were 96 participants who woke
up bright and
early to compete
in an 18-hole tournament. Prizes
were awarded
for the top three

teams as well as
individuals with
the longest drive
and closest to the
hole. Proceeds
from the golf tournament went to
the Minos Chapter
scholarship fund.
Afterwards,
the golfers and
members from the community enjoyed an afternoon at
Washington State Park for our annual picnic. Over 300
people enjoyed lunch, tavli, volleyball, and great parea. A
special thanks goes out to the hole sponsors, volunteers,
and the companies and families who donated to help make
our picnic/golf tournament a success.

“MINOS CRETE”
On March 31, 2010, Eleftherios Menelaos Hamilakis
fell into eternal sleep at his
home surrounded by his
loved ones; his wife and two
children. Eleftherios was born
in Pyrgos, Delianon Kissamou.
He was one of six siblings
born to Menelaos and Eleni
(Koutsourellis) Hamilakis. At
a very young age, Eleftherios
lost his mother during WWII.
His uncle later adopted him
and his sister in 1952 where they subsequently settled in
Springfield, Massachusetts. At that time, he worked for
his uncle and simultaneously attended school. In 1959, he
returned back to Greece to marry Maria Kartakis and, together, they established a new home in Springfield. Several
years later they began a family and had two children, George
and Elaine. Eleftherios was a beloved husband, outstanding
father, and a treasured grandfather to his four grandchildren: Eleftherios (Teddy), Christos, Julia and Troy. Eleftherios
was a life long member of the Minos-Crete association and
actively volunteered for numerous club activities. He also
was an active member of St. George Cathedral and, throughout the years, supported church functions. He was very
proud of his Cretan heritage and enjoyed partaking in Cretan
festivities with friends. He was loved and respected by many.
He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He was
an individual who could light up a room with his kindness,
generosity and care. May his memory be eternal.

the Harbor Hills Yacht
Club in Davidsonville,
Maryland. The view
of the Severna River
was magnificent but the Cretan hospitality was even greater.
The event, which was a resounding success attended by

more than 120 Cretans and friends of Crete, was made possible by the generous contributions of many members. The
Chairpersons of the committee and hosts were James and
Rosalia Saklas.

Coutoulakis, Artemis and Maria Dagalakis, Constantine,

6:00-9:00 PM at the Embassy of Greece, 2217 Massachusetts Ave., Washington DC. Admission is free.
Irene also announced the recent purchase of a building
by the Hellenic Center Inc. and the significance of this purchase to the Greek Community of Washington. The Cretan
Association of Washington is one of the seven members of
the Hellenic Center. Our PAA President Mr. Ted Manousakis expressed his immediate support and pledged $2,000
toward the renovation of the Center. Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel
and Hermione Fthenakis followed with very generous pledge
of $10,000 in memory of Mr. Fthenakis’ father. Many other
members of our Association have previously donated or plan
to offer their contributions to the building fund.
Mr. Manousakis addressed the gathering, praised the
accomplishments of the Association, and expressed his continuing support to the efforts of the Association to promote
the Cretan culture and customs .
The Cretan Association of Washington DC and the Hellenic Center
A thirty year dream of seven Greek organizations of the
Washington DC area, organized under the name “Hellenic
Center Inc.”, has finally come true. After extensive efforts, a
properly zoned building that will house the needs of these
seven organizations has been found, purchased and paid for
in full. The Building is located in the prestigious Washington

suburb of Bethesda,
Maryland. The building, however, needs to
be renovated to create
seven office spaces, one
for each organization, a
thirty person conference
room that may also be
used as a library, and an
open space that would
accommodate approximately one hundred people for social gatherings, lectures,
art exhibits and other events.
The Cretan Association is one of the seven organizations
of the Hellenic Center Inc. and is well represented by Irene
Drimi Konstantopoulos, President of the Cretan Association,
Artemis Dagalakis, HC Treasurer, Constantine Rodousakis
and George Konstantopoulos. These representatives have
assumed great responsibilities within the Hellenic Center Organization by heading the Building Committee, the Fundraising Committee and various event committees.
Many leading members of the Cretan Community of
Washington have come forth unsolicited to contribute
generously to the fund to renovate the Hellenic Center
Building. The first contributor is our PAA President Theodore
(Ted) Manousakis who pledged $2,000. This contribution
was followed by the substantial pledge of $10,000 made
by Emanuel and Hermione Fthenakis. Mr. Fthenakis is the
former Chairman of Fairchild Industries and this pledge was
made in memory of his father. Irene and George Konstantopoulos have undertaken the cost of the engineering design
of the facility. It is almost certain that many more donors will
come forth when they are made aware of the significance of
the Hellenic Center.
The Center will bring together most of the Greek community of the Washington DC area and will provide events
that will propagate our culture and Greek heritage. Also,
many events are being planned that will actively involve the
youth and the young professionals of the area.
If anyone would like to contribute to the Building Fund
of the Hellenic Center, please get in touch with Irene Drimi

deductible. The name of the contributors of $1,000 or more
will be included in the dedication plaque of the Center.

the new couple-to-be a
life full of love, happiness and children. Friday, the pre-wedding
celebration - apart from each other for “one last time.” Saturday, the pre-wedding dinner party hosted by the groom at
Brutole Restaurant in Danvers, Mass. Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009
was the wedding ceremony in the chapel at Holy Cross in
Brookline, Mass. The koumbari were Demetrios Dalianis and
Antonia Metaskaki. The beautiful wedding dinner reception
was at the Nightingale Inn in Wenham, Mass. with Cretan
musicians entertaining everyone into the early morning
hours. A wonderful weekend was enjoyed by families and
