Thoughts from our Parish Priest
Beloved in Christ,
Sometimes the Orthodox Church - and Christianity in general - is seen as antiquated,
struggling to hold on to the past and shunning progressive ideas and reformation. What
we must remember is, God does not change according to our whims, but is constant
throughout the ages. Therefore, the dogmas, the core of our Christian faith, cannot change.
The moment we change something, whether through addition or subtraction, we add
our own views and beliefs to the Truth. Instead of changing God and the dogma of our
Church, we are the ones called to change, to repent, and adopt a godly mindset, living a
Christ-centered life.
The Church has been, and continues to be, quite progressive throughout the centuries
through technological, architectural, administrative, and even theological changes - all
done in order to more efficiently and correctly promote and live a life in Christ. However,
in our progress we always look back to Christ, His Apostles, and the Fathers of Church for
guidance, in order not to stray from the faith of the Apostles, which was given to them by
Christ Himself. So as we progress throughout the centuries, we always look back to make
sure that our progress does not change our dogmas and we remain true to the Truth of
God.
In the spirit of always checking back to the source while we progress, we have decided
to revise and re-build this bulletin. There have been many requests from many of you to
return to this format of the bulletin, which contains more information and more details
regarding the monthly life of our Orthodox community. So, in progressing to meet the
needs and demands of the members, our bulletin committee has looked back at what most
of you enjoyed, and we have responded with this bulletin. I hope that you will enjoy this
change, and I hope to hear your constructive ideas as we continue to improve our bulletin.
With love in Christ
Fr. Kosta

Fellow members of the Hellenic family of Manitoba,
As the new President of the Greek Community, I would like to bring you greetings from the
Board of Directors.
As a Board, we continue to work in a voluntary and coordinated way for another year. Our
aim remains the same, to maintain and improve our religious and cultural programs.
We would also like to thank you in advance for your own contributions to the work that is
carried out. With the help of all our volunteers, we are managing our Hellenic Community
needs and hopefully making some progress.
We would like to assure you that your contribution, either in volunteer work or funding
support, or both, is needed to fulfill our goals, and it is always welcome and much
appreciated.
We thank you and let’s have a good year as a Community and as individuals.

Greetings from the Ladies of Philoptochos
Greetings,
It is with great joy that we are celebrating on the 15th of February the Feast day
of our Patron, Saint Philothei the Athenian, with Artoclasia and our famous,
delicious, melt-in-your-mouth loukoumathes. All proceeds are going to
organizations in our local community that help victims of domestic abuse,
a cause championed by our Patron Saint.
Saint Philothei was a Greek martyr and saint. She was born in Athens to a
wealthy family. Against her will, she was married to a cruel man. When he
died three years later, the Saint gave away her worldly belongings, took up
the monastic life and established a monastery, in which she became a mother
to her disciples. Many women enslaved and abused by the Muslim Ottoman Turks in harems also
ran to her for refuge. Because of this, in 1589, the Turkish rulers of Ottoman Greece became enraged
and came to her monastery and dragged her by force out of the church. They beat her cruelly and
after a few days, she died.
Troparion to St. Philothei (Tone 5) “The Faithful of Athens and all the world honor Philothei the
martyred nun and rejoice in her holy relics. For she has exchanged this passing life for the life that
knows no end through her struggle and martyrdom; and she begs the Savior to have mercy on us
all.”
We are so grateful for your support, so that we may continue our mission of Christian love to our
neighbors, near and far.
Philoptochos is largest philanthropic organization in the world. We warmly welcome new members
to join us.
Blessed Sarakosti!
Debby Vlahos,
Philoptochos President
“And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, He
said, It is more blessed to give than to receive”

Judgement Sunday (Meatfare Sunday)
The two parables we hear the Sundays before this day -- especially that of the Prodigal Son -- have
presented to us God’s extreme goodness and love for man. But lest certain persons, putting their
confidence in this alone, live carelessly, squandering upon sin the time given them to work out their
salvation, and death suddenly snatches them away, the most divine Fathers have appointed this
day’s feast commemorating Christ’s impartial Second Coming. Through this day we bring to mind
that God is not only the Friend of man, but also the most righteous Judge, Who recompenses to
each according to his deeds.
It is the aim of the holy Fathers, through bringing to mind that fearful day, to rouse us from the
slumber of carelessness unto the work of virtue, and to move us to love and compassion for our
brethren. Besides this, even as on the coming Sunday of Cheese-fare we commemorate Adam’s
exile from the Paradise of delight -- which exile is the beginning of life as we know it now -- it
is clear that today’s is reckoned the last of all feasts, because on the last day of judgment, truly,
everything of this world will come to an end.
In remembering the fate of this world, we are given ways of salvation, by Christ Himself.
Confession and repentance, along with all the Mysteries of the Church are the ways that we keep
our lives centered around Christ. The Mystery of Mysteries - the partaking of the Body and Blood
of God - is our physical and spiritual connection to God, our strength to enter through the narrow
door, and our safeguard against spiritual death. It is up to us to choose which of the two laws of this
world we will follow - the law of God, or the law of sin.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Welcome to the first edition of the newly redesigned Greek Community Bulletin. We hope
that this new design will provide easy to access information on our community events, news,
features, photos, and our membership. We hope that by providing this information it will
inspire you, our readers, to become involved and to understand our community spirit, and to
increase communications within our membership. If you have any questions or would like to
become part of the team, please contact us.
One of the most exciting events coming to Winnipeg in the
spring is the Winnipeg Art Gallery Olympus Exhibit. Four key
Greek organizations have come together to sponsor the major
marble statue, Aphrodite.
AHEPA, the Daughters of Penelope, Philiptochos and the
Greek Community Board will each contribute towards this
sponsorship. In return, each organization will be acknowledged
Aphrodite ca. 150 AD (WAG)
during the exhibit’s run. We are supporting this exhibit because
it promotes Greek culture and arts throughout all of Winnipeg. The
exhibit will also be included on many school trips, thus teaching children about Greek arts
and culture. In order to raise the funds to do this, we are hosting a brunch on February 8th
after liturgy. At the brunch Dr. Ernest Cholakis will speak about the entire Olympus exhibit.
The Winnipeg Art Gallery will also provide information. Come have a delicious brunch and
help us support Greek culture and arts in Winnipeg!
March is just around the corner and we are already planning for two major events: the Flag
Raising at City Hall on March 25th, and our party on Saturday March 21st. Like last
year, we are organizing transportation to take a group to City Hall after the liturgy service.
The flag raising and speeches will take place at around 1:00 pm. Last year a City Transit
bus took a large number of people downtown, we are hoping to do this again but this is not
yet confirmed. More details will be coming soon. Regarding the party on the 21st of March,
please contact Dino Chouzouris to buy tickets or to volunteer.
Tune into Odyssey every Tuesday at 4pm to hear updates and events from the Greek
community, with Stasa Veroukis reporting on the news from Winnipeg.
