Από τη στιγμή αυτή και μετά χρειάστηκαν μόνο 12 χρόνια στους Kερκυραίους για να μάθουν το παιχνίδι και να δημιουργήσουν δύο τοπικές ομάδες για να παίζουν με τους Βρετανούς. Η μία απαρτιζόταν από παίχτες κατώτερης και μέσης κοινωνικής στάθμης και ονομαζόταν Mικροί και η άλλη από άτομα υψηλής κοινωνικής στάθμης και λεγόταν Μεγάλοι. Μετά την αποχώρηση των Άγγλων το 1864 από την Κέρκυρα δημιουργήθηκαν δύο τοπικές ομάδες, η Εταιρία Γκογκάκης και το σωματείο Καμπίτσης. Το 1893 λόγω έλλειψης παικτών τα δύο αυτά σωματεία συγχωνεύτηκαν και δημιούργησαν τον Κερκυραϊκό Γυμναστικό Σύλλογο (Κ.Γ.Σ.), το τρίτο αρχαιότερο σωματείο στην Ελλάδα μετά τον Πανελλήνιο και τον Πανιώνιο. Ο Κ.Γ.Σ. ήταν ο μοναδικός αντίπαλος για τις ομάδες των πλοίων του Βασιλικού Ναυτικού που επισκέπτονταν την Κέρκυρα. Το 1923 ιδρύθηκε ο Εργατικός και το 1925 άνοιξε τις πύλες του στην αριστοκρατία και ιδρύθηκε ο Γ.Σ.Κ. Βύρωνας, στη μνήμη του μεγάλου ποιητή. Αποκορύφωμα στην εποχή πριν από τον Ά Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο ήταν το 1904 με 30-40 πλοία του Μεσογειακού στόλου να παρευρίσκονται στους αγώνες κρίκετ και το 1932 που ήταν παρούσα η πριγκίπισσα της Ουαλίας στο πολεμικό πλοίο Queen Elizabeth καθώς και 45 άλλα πλοία. Το 1997 ιδρύθηκε στην Κέρκυρα η Ελληνική Ομοσπονδία Κρίκετ (ΕΛ.Ο.Κ.) η οποία είναι μέλος του Διεθνούς Συμβουλίου Κρίκετ (Ι.C.C.) σαν affiliate member (ερασιτεχνικό μέλος). Η Ελληνική Ομοσπονδία Κρίκετ διοργανώνει το 3ο Διεθνές Σχολικό Τουρνουά Κρίκετ από τις 22 - 27 Απριλίου 2013. Στόχος αυτής της διοργάνωσης είναι ο εορτασμός του πνεύματος και ποικιλομορφίας του κρίκετ συγκεντρώνοντας κρικετίστες από διαφορετικές ηπείρους, χώρες και κοινότητες σε ένα ιστορικό και μαγευτικό μέρος. ΔΗΜΟΣ ΚΕΡΚΥΡΑΣ Cricket appears historically in Corfu, which was under the British domination, on the 23rd of April 1823 with a game between officers of the British Navy. From then on, only twelve years needed for the Corfiots to learn the game and form two local sides and start taking up the British. The one was consisted of players of minor and medium rang and named Small and the other one was consisted of players of a higher rang and named Large. On the departure of the British from Corfu in 1864 there evolved two local clubs, the Gongakis company and the Camvissis club. In 1893 however owing to a dearth of players these clubs merged to become the Gymnastikos club, the third eldest club in Greece after Panhellenic and Panionios, the sole opponents being frequent visiting ships of the Royal Navy. In 1923 the Ergatikos club was formed and in 1925 it opened its doors to members of the aristocracy and became known as the Byron C.C. in honor of the famous poet. High peaks in the period before the First World War were the 1904 season with the commander in chief of the Mediterranean fleet with 30 – 40 ships attending the cricket festival and the 1932 season when the Prince of Wales on the battleship Queen Elizabeth and a total of 45 ships were present. In 1997 in Corfu the Hellenic Cricket Federation (H.C.F.) was established which is a member of the International Cricket Council (I.C.C.) as an affiliate member. Hellenic Cricket Federation organises the 3rd International Schools Cricket Tournament from 22-27 April 2013. Its aim is the celebration of the spirit and diversity of cricket bringing together cricketers across continents, countries and communities in a historical and magical place. The organization of the 3rd International Cricket School Tournament in Corfu, involving schools from the UK, South Africa, Bulgaria, India and Greece, is a significant event for the promotion both of Corfu and Greece in the areas of the theme tourism, one of our immediate priorities. Actions like this will enrich the tourism product and expand the level of services offered. The initiative of ELOK (Hellenic cricket federation), for the organization of the 3d international school cricket tournament, is praiseworthy, as it unites, through sports, adolescents from countries with various civilization, culture and religion, different habits proving that there are more things that unite all these young people than the things which divide them. I salute this effort of the board of the Hellenic cricket federation, as I believe, should benefit from the utmost support by the Greek State. Residents of the inner city have their own cricket oval. Until now, we were a club in search of Home Ground which survived due to the goodwill of the education campus of the University of the Witwatersrand. At the beginning 2007 we were given our final notice to vacate these premises. At this point the Club’s Founding late Chairman’s persisting words rang loud for all of us to hear once again: “WITHOUT OUR OWN HOME GROUND OUR CLUB IS BUT A FIGMENT OF OUR IMAGINATION DESTINED TO DISAPPEAR LIKE SO MANY BEFORE IT” This was the spur we needed to open our old book in search of Home Ground. With fading realism and with a sense of desperation we approached the JDA. In March 2007.This gave the club a new lease of life and it was the perfect tonic to do what its founders always dreamt of, and that was to give back to others what this game had given us. Incredibly successful in local borough cricket on an annual basis, this squad has representatives from four teams all of whom have been borough champions on more than one occasion. Deputy Headteacher and a key figure in the psychological preparation made for each member of the squad both individually and collectively. Jai Khandelwal is usually the squad’s opening batsmen, regularly setting a strong platform for other batsmen. Jai is also an extremely talented bowler, usually most destructive at the opening of an innings. Jai has represented the Borough of Harrow in tournaments since 2010. Ashish Pattni is the main spinner in the squad. His leg spin has been extremely successful and was evident as our leading wicket taker of the 2012 season. Rikin Patel takes on the supporting role of vice captain. Rikin has established himself as a top paceman taking many wickets in the run-up to this tournament. A man in form, he is also capable of batting high in the order, often scoring vital runs. Hunish Patel is the squad’s only inswing bowler who can regularly take wickets early on with the new ball. He is also a middle order batsman, who is able to pick up the economy rate and potentially increase our final total. Hunish is also one of the squad’s most committed fielders and is willing to throw himself around in the field to save vital runs. Hasan Ahmad is a key all rounder in Park High’s squad, being useful with both ball and bat. He is able to take on the role of a middle order batsman well, regularly hitting double figures. He is also our other fast bowling option and is very economical. Hasan represents the GBCA side in Harrow Borough. Arjun Kerai is a strong fielder in the side but his main strengths lie in his bowling skills. Arjun has the ability to produce a variety of deliveries which regularly help him gain wickets. He is also a middle order batsman, regularly scoring runs towards the end of the innings. Mr Neil Darby. Manager of the tour and coach to the team, who have been local authority champions in two of the previous three years. - Front row (L-R) Akshar Patel is also one of the leading all rounders in the squad. His bowling has drastically improved and he is now able to offer an economical spell. His batting skills are extremely strong too, as he can fulfil the expectations of a top order batsman. He is strong in the field, and is also able to keep wicket. Rahul Kothari is a talented fast bowler, and always strikes at least once throughout his spell. Not only is Rahul a strong bowling option, he has the ability and technique to bat high in the order scoring with ease. Hatim Kanchwala is one of the strongest bowling options that the squad has. An all rounder who has the ability to bat with quality and precision. He is a strong fielder often covering the boundary well. Viraj Patel is Park High School’s captain representing Harrow at the tournament. Viraj is an ex-county cricketer, and has represented the county side of Middlesex. He is mainly known for his batting skills. He is also the wicketkeeper of the team but can also be used as a part time off spinner. Zain Hussain is a committed member of the team when it comes to fielding. Not only are his athletic skills exceptional, he offers a wide variety of options when it comes to bowling. He is able to take up the position of a top order batsmen. Zain has represented South Hertfordshire on several occasions, as well as playing for his local club, GB Cricket Club. Kunal Miyani is a medium pace bowler and is often crucial to the squad as his bowling can be extremely accurate towards the end of an innings. Kunal also represents GB Cricket Club in Harrow Borough. Last season we finished 3rd in the chance to shine national state school competition and as such have decided to tour this year. Cricket has always played a strong part in Southboroughs’ extra curricular timetable even though the weather in England often has a huge impact on the quality of pitches and performance!
