Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is with great humility that I greet you in this New Year 2012. I feel very blessed to have been elected President of St.
Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral’s Parish Council and I look forward to the year ahead, serving St. Nicholas Cathedral and our parish family.
St. Nicholas’ Parish Council is made up of fourteen men and women who love God and along with our clergy, are here to
serve you, our parish family. All Parish Council members look forward to meeting and interacting with you, to greet,
welcome and assist you.
St. Nicholas needs your help this year as we continue growing our ministries. We are in need of active volunteers on
ministries and committees, including office volunteers for mailings, helping to reach out to all our parishioners, with love
and compassion.
Our Faith in Action Ministry- Dome Renovation Committee has been blessed as through their talents and hard work and
above all, your love and donations, this project is in its last phase. If you have not purchased a St. Nicholas copper icon,
please purchase one soon! Another blessing is our Bookstore ministry. We are so fortunate to have dedicated parishioners, under Fr. Michael’s love and guidance, who give of their time to keep our Bookstore open. There are religious books
on many topics in English and Greek, DVD’s, icons, as well as various religious gifts for children and adults. Come, visit
and make a purchase, you will be amazed at what you will find!
At St. Nicholas we are blessed to have a very talented group of men and women who serve our parish as youth ministry
and committee leaders; Catechism teachers, pre-school teachers, choir members, cantors, Greek Dance Ministry instructors, youth advisors for all ages; all men and women who give of their time and talents on a daily or weekly basis. What
we need now is you, each and every one of you, to volunteer, to ask what can I do to help my parish family?
St. Nicholas needs the “gift of you” in 2012! As you fill out your 2012 Commitment Card, please turn it over to the last
page, where you can start making a difference. Check off where you can help out and I feel certain that by each of us giving our commitment of time and talent, we can all grow closer to God and His Church. Our wonderful office staff will
generate a “talents list” for all chairmen who will then contact you.
As you read through the articles and enjoy the pictures in this issue of the VINE, I pray that you will find something that
will inspire you to come forward and join the St. Nicholas TEAM, as “Together Everyone Achieves More”! I look forward

Dear Parishioners:
We started the process of inputting information for your Commitment Cards for 2012. This month I am asking for your help in making
sure our records are correct and verifying that you have returned your
Commitment Card for 2012. You will see in this edition of the Vine a list
of all of those parishioners who have returned their Commitment Cards
as of January 31, 2012. This list is the official list of the current members
of our church.

If you returned a completed Commitment Card and your name is not on the list, please contact the
church office at 937-3540 or me at 461-1818. We will immediately check your inquiry and correct any error that resulted in not including you on the list. If you do not see your name on the list, I would encourage you to contact the church office or me and we will immediately send you a Commitment Card for
2012 to complete and return. We plan on updating the list in each edition of the Vine so everyone can
see if their name is on our list and help us make sure our records are complete.
As you can see from the list, a large number of parishioners have not returned their completed
Commitment Card. Our cathedral survives off of the donation of time, talent and your treasure. As always, the operations of the cathedral, and the ministries being provided, need your financial support and
the support of your time and talents.
If you know of someone that is not on the list, please contact that person and ask them if they have
any questions regarding Orthodox Christian Living/Stewardship and have them contact Fr. Michael, Fr.
Vasilios or me and we will try and answer their questions. If they do not have any questions, then we are
asking your assistance in helping to sustain and grow our church by encouraging them to return a completed Commitment Card.
By helping encourage family and friends to complete and return their Commitment Cards, you are
performing an act of Orthodox Christian Living/Stewardship. Your church needs you to help continue the
mission of the church by making sure that every Greek Orthodox in our community participates in our Orthodox Christian Living/Stewardship program. This process begins when they return their completed

What happened to “STEWARDSHIP”? And What is O.C.L.M.?
Have you ever played the word association game? You say a
word and ask another person to respond as quickly as they
can with the first thing that comes into their mind. Try it. Book
– read, black –white, stewardship – money. That’s right, stewardship – money. But that’s wrong because stewardship does
not = money. Its meaning is much more holistic and of greater
essence than merely money.
The word “stewardship” is a translation of the Greek term, oikonomia (οικονομία) a focal point for the Fathers of the Church.
In biblical texts “oikonomia” denotes God’s plan of salvation
which is realized in the Incarnation of His Son.
St. Paul uses the term “oikonomia” to indicate God’s management or dispensation of world history to prepare for the coming
of His Son, Jesus Christ, through whose Incarnation the riches
of God have been poured out upon all men for the purpose of
restoring them to communion with God through the forgiveness of sin.
“Stewardship” properly understood has to do with the mystery
of salvation which the Father has accomplished in the coming
of His Son, Jesus Christ. He has entrusted this mystery to the
Church. The Church has been appointed as the “steward” of
the mystery of salvation in Christ. The church has been called
to make this known to all men. So far I have not heard one
reference directly to money.
Let’s read various definitions from dictionaries defining the
term “stewardship”.
 The conducting, supervising, or managing of something;
especially: the careful and responsible management of
something entrusted to one's care
 The moral and ethical responsibility for caretaking on behalf of others
 Taking responsibility for the survival and well-being of
something that is valued
 Taking responsibility and caring
 One who administers anything as the agent of another or
others.
Sounds more palatable than stewardship = $$$$$$.
Taking all of this into consideration, that possibly we have corrupted the definition of this beautiful term and have connected
an inappropriately limited definition to something that means
so much more, I have taken the liberty to approach this Heavenly Management Directive of God to something much simpler
but of great essence; living an Orthodox Christian life.
Other synonyms that we might use are: manage, custodian, keeper, overseer, επιτροπος or οικονομος. The
point is becoming clearer as to why I have chosen a different approach to this vital part of our lives; our awesome responsibility and key to our salvation.
Therefore, if we realize that the term “stewardship” has been
mis-introduced decades ago as a means of fundraising in our
church, not faith raising, then why not re-define and present
this integral part of our life in Christ in a new, fresh manner.
We are living in the Obamian era which is synonymous with
“change” anyway.
It is all about living an Orthodox Christian Life. A true life in
Christ. Easier said then understood. In following issues of The
Vine, The Weekly Bulletin, Sermons from the Amvon (pulpit)
and during Faith Enrichment (Bible Studies) for both youth and
adults, we will examine and learn what it really means to live
our Orthodox Christianity. This is a time of renewal, of being
“born again”.
Is this mind shift going to take place overnight? No, I don’t
think so. It will take a concerted effort on the part of all of us to
truly thirst for the true meaning of life and to want to learn what
is The Truth, who is God and what does He want from me
(us)? With this issue of The Vine we begin.
St. Ignatius admonishes the community: “Labour together,
fight, run, suffer, sleep, watch with one another as God’s stewards, companions and servants” (ως θεου οικονομοι και
πάρεδροι και υπηρέται).
Τι συνέβη «στη ΔΙΑΧΕΙΡΙΣΗ»; Και τι είναι O.C.L.M.;
Έχετε ποτέ παίξει το παιγνίδι των λέξεων; Λέτε μια λέξη και ζητάτε
από τον άλλο παίκτη να πεί όσο πιό γρήγορα μπορεί το πρώτο
πράγμα που έρχεται στο μυαλό του. Π.χ. δοκιμάστε: Βιβλίο διάβασμα, Μαύρο - άσπρο, Διαχείριση - χρήματα. Ετσι ακριβώς,
διαχείριση - χρήματα. Αλλά αυτό είναι λάθος γιατί διαχείρηση δεν
είναι = χρήματα. Η έννοιά της είναι πιό σφαιρική και μεγαλύτερης
ουσίας από μόνο χρήματα.
Η λέξη «διαχείριση» είναι μετάφραση του Ελληνικού όρου,
οικονομία, ένα επίκεντρο σημείο για τους πατέρες της εκκλησίας.
Στα βιβλικά κείμενα «η οικονομία» δηλώνει το σχέδιο του Θεού
γιά την σωτηρία που πραγματοποιείται με την ενσάρκωση του
Υιού Του.
Ο Αγιος Παύλος χρησιμοποιεί τον όρο «οικονομία» για να δείξει τη
διαχείριση ή την διανομή του Θεού ως προς την προετοιμασία της
παγκόσμιας ιστορίας για τον ερχομό του Υιού Του, Ιησού Χριστού,
με την Ενσάρκωση του οποίου τα αγαθά του Θεού έχουν δοθεί εν
αφθονία επί της ανθρωπότητος με σκοπό την αποκατάσταση της
επικοινωνίας τους με το Θεό διά μέσω της άφεσης αμαρτιών.
«Η διαχείριση», πλήρως κατανοητή, έχει να κάνει με το μυστήριο
της σωτηρίας που ο Πατέρας έχει επιτύχει με τον ερχομό του Υιού
Του, Ιησού Χριστού. Έχει εμπιστευτεί αυτό το μυστήριο στην
Εκκλησία. Η Εκκλησία έχει διοριστεί ως «διαχειριστής» του
μυστηρίου της εν Χριστώ σωτηρίας. Η εκκλησία έχει κληθεί να το
γνωστοποιήσει σε όλους τους ανθρώπους. Μέχρι τώρα δεν έχω

Ας διαβάσουμε τους διάφορους ορισμούς που τα λεξικά δίνουν γιά
τον όρο «διαχείριση».
 Η διεύθυνση, η εποπτεία, ή διαχείριση από κάτι, ειδικά: η
προσεκτική και αρμόδια διαχείριση από κάτι εμπιστευόμενο
στην εποπτεία κάποιου
 την ηθική ευθύνη της διαχείρησης εξ ονόματος άλλων
 ανάληψη της ευθύνης για την επιβίωση και την ευημερία από
κάτι πολύτιμο
 αναλαμβάνοντας την ευθύνη και φροντίδα
 αυτός που διαχειρίζεται κάτι ως αντιπρόσωπος άλλων.
Ακούγονται πιό ευχάριστα από το διαχείριση = χρήματα.
Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη ότι ενδεχομένως έχουμε αλλοιώσει την
σημασία αυτού του όμορφου όρου και έχουμε συνδέσει έναν
ανάρμοστα περιορισμένο ορισμό σε κάτι που σημαίνει τόσο πολύ
περισσότερα, πήρα το θάρρος να προσεγγίσω αυτήν την Θεϊκή
Διαχειριστική Κατευθυντήρια γραμμή του Θεού με κάτι πολύ
απλούστερο αλλά μεγάλης ουσίας, βιώνοντας μία Ορθόδοξη
Χριστιανική ζωή.
Άλλα συνώνυμα που μπορούμε να χρησιμοποιήσουμε είναι:
διαχειριστής, επιστάτης, φύλακας, επόπτης, επίτροπος ή
οικονόμος. Γίνεται σαφέστερο ως προς το γιατί έχω επιλέξει
διαφορετική προσέγγιση σε αυτό το τόσο ζωτικής σημασίας
μέρος της ζωής μας η τρομερή μας ευθύνη και το κλειδί της
σωτηρίας μας.

Επομένως, εάν συνειδητοποιούμε ότι ο όρος «διαχείριση» -έχει
εισαχθεί κατά λάθος πριν από δεκαετίες με την σημασία της
συλλογής κεφαλαίων στην εκκλησία μας, όχι ως ανάπτυξη της
πίστης, τότε γιατί να μην επαναπροσδιορίσουμε και να μην
παρουσιάσουμε αυτό το αναπόσπαστο μέρος της εν Χριστώ ζωής
μας με τρόπο νέο, φρέσκο; Ετσι κι αλλιώς ζούμε στην Obamian
εποχή που είναι συνώνυμη με «την αλλαγή».
Έχει να κάνει με το να ζούμε μιά Ορθόδοξη Χριστιανική ζωή. Μιά
αληθινή εν Χριστώ ζωή. Είναι ευκολότερο να το λέμε παρά να το
καταλαβαίνουμε. Στις επόμενες εκδόσεις της Αμπέλου, του
Εβδομαδιαίου Δελτίου, των Κηρυγμάτων από τον Αμβωνα και κατά
τη διάρκεια του Εμπλουτισμού της Πίστης (Μελέτες της Βίβλου) για
τη νεολαία και τους ενηλίκους, θα εξετάσουμε και θα μάθουμε τι
σημαίνει πραγματικά να ζούμε τον Ορθόδοξο Χριστιανισμό μας.
Αυτός είναι ο καιρός της ανανέωσης, της «επαναγέννησης».
Θα γίνει αυτή η μετατόπιση του νού σε ένα βράδυ; Δεν νομίζω. Θα
χρειαστεί μεγάλη προσπάθεια εκ μέρους όλων μας γιά να
διψάσουμε για την αληθινή έννοια της ζωής και να θελήσουμε να
μάθουμε τι είναι Η Αλήθεια, η οποία είναι Θεός και τι θέλει από
μένα (μας);
Αυτή η έκδοση της Αμπέλου είναι η αρχή.
Ο Αγιος Ιγνάτιος προειδοποιεί την κοινότητα: «Εργαστείτε μαζί,
παλέψτε, τρέξτε, υποφέρετε, κοιμηθήτε, προσέξτε ο ένας τον άλλο
ως διαχειριστές, σύντροφοι και υπηρέτες του Θεού» (ως Θεού
οικονόμοι και πάρεδροι και υπηρέται).

Outreach & Evangelism
Outreach & Evangelism Ministry is under the spiritual guidance of Fr. Michael, and includes Daphne Austin, George Chambers, Theodora Genduso, George Kallas, Renee Katsaris, Jim Korfias, and Georgia Tsangaris. We also enjoy plentiful support
from the Parish Council and the Philoptochos, all working together to help us “Reach Out”.
Outreach and Evangelism can mean different things to different people, and if you asked around to see what people think this
ministry is responsible for you’d be sure to get quite a few different answers. What exactly is our mission?
1. Revitalize the faith of active Orthodox Christians
2. Reach out to inactive Orthodox Christians
3. Meet the needs of those inquiring about the Orthodox faith
4. Offer the tools for ministry renewal
5. Offer guidance in the establishment of new ministries
This is somewhat of a broad mission, and you can see how the Outreach & Evangelism Ministry can sometimes be viewed as
a “catch all” for items that otherwise may not have a clear area to be assigned. Here is what we’ve been working on in 2011:
Phone Broadcasting System
Many of our elder members do not use email, and although we are already sending announcements to our church
members via e-mail, not all members are getting these messages. We have installed a new system that allow Father
Michael and Father Vasileios to send out messages to all 900 of our families at the touch of a button – as compared to
having a group of people making 900 phone calls – and the messages will go out in Greek and English. This will allow
us to instantly remind people about important church services, holidays, events, last minute schedule changes, and
even weather, safety, and evacuation conditions. In the coming months you will begin getting phone messages from
our church, and we ask that you please contact the church office and keep your contact information current as it
changes.
Spirited Speaker Series
We will be scheduling speakers to present various topics periodically in Father Tryfon Hall on Sundays at 1:PM. Admission will vary depending on the speaker, and may include a complimentary glass of wine, snacks, and other refreshments. Topics will range from serious religious to light humor, and speakers may include authors of books, including those available at our bookstore. Our intent is to bring people to our church, and expose them to our members,
our facilities, and our community. Keep an eye out in the bulletin for announcements featuring the “Spirited Speaker
Series” and please plan to come – and bring a friend – the series are open to all, members and non-members.

Support Group for New Moms
We are currently looking for leaders and volunteers to assist in the implementation of these programs, and the development of

Reverend Clergy and the Faithful of the Holy and God-protected Metropolis of Atlanta
My dearly beloved in the Lord,
“For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.”
Psalm 139:13
My brothers and sisters, as children of God and people living in the fear of God, we can see that we are living in troubled times. Our forefathers, out of reverence for God, respected religious beliefs and the freedom given to us by God. That is why the First Amendment to our Constitution protects the right to freedom of religion and freedom of expression from government interference: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” This principle is unique and connects us with God and God
with us. Unfortunately, it today’s society, and under current leadership, we are dealing with a society that is not merely ignorant about God, or
neutral toward Christianity, but in many ways actively opposes Christ and His teachings and Christian believers.
For this, permit me to remind you of the teachings of our Faith, and share some thoughts on the sanctity of life with you, faithful Orthodox
Christians of the Metropolis of Atlanta. I would like to inform you and ask you for your participation in the political arena by contacting your
elected representatives regarding our commitment to the sanctity of life, and of course, reserving your support and your vote for the place
identified with faith and Christian teachings.
In our country, we have witnessed a tragic and relentless assault on the life and dignity of human beings, who are created in the image and
likeness of God. As our Creator, God knows us even before we are born. As the Psalmist says, even while we were still in our mother's
womb, God loved and had plans for us. In the Gospel of Luke, the Virgin Mary visited her cousin, St. Elizabeth, who was also pregnant, and
St. Elizabeth exclaimed “Why do I deserve such honor, that the mother of my Lord would come to me? For when the sound of your greeting
reached my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy.” (Luke 1:39-45) The unborn St. John the Forerunner recognized and rejoiced in the
presence of Christ in His mother’s womb. In all of the Gospels and the Fathers, we find that the sanctity of human life is not ‘optional’ or an
‘opinion’ of the Church, but rather is the Truth of God, revealed to us by the Incarnation, by the life and ministry of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ.
How then can we be true to the commandments of our Lord in a society that dismisses or ignores our traditional Christian values of the sanctity and dignity of each individual human life? How can we witness to the sanctity of life in a consistent and meaningful way? After all, freedom of religion, which we as Americans are so proud of, means nothing without respect for the rights of everyone to follow the moral principles of their faith, and not to be forced to violate their conscience and religious beliefs.
Each of us is called by God to do something. Each of us has been given gifts by God to serve our fellow man. My brothers and sisters, at this
critical time, as we battle against evil and indifference and the powers of this world, we must join together, come together, as leaders, as spiritual fathers and as Faithful to witness and affirm our commitment to the sanctity of all life, because we are all followers of the One who said.
“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10).
My beloved ones, do not forget that we live in a time when we must do battle with the Antichrist, as St. John says, “And this is the spirit of
the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.” (1 John 4:3). Of course, we know that the Antichrist will
not come with a face or an image but rather with an ideology, presented to us in such a way that it will lead us out of the true Faith, as St. John
reminds us, “For many deceivers have gone out into the world.”(2 John 1:7) I believe that this is the time when we must be careful, and not
open the doors of our hearts to everything we hear, but rather be critical and discerning the truth. For my part, I have already informed you of
what our Faith teaches, now you, as followers of Christ, must act accordingly. “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (Matthew 11:15)

Epiphany Committee
Epiphany - January 6, 2012
This year’s Epiphany celebration was full of surprises, excitement and a great opportunity for reflection. It was the scene of
a first time occurrence regarding the recognition of 4 official cross retrievers. It was also a wonderful reminder of how our traditions are in constant battle with the changing times. Let us briefly reflect on the day’s events and where we are going from here
as a parish.
First we had a very unique situation in which the first cross thrown was not retrieved and could not be found for a significant
period of time. The decision was then made to toss a second cross in the waters in hopes of a speedy retrieval and the commencement of the blessing of a sole retriever. The second cross was brought forth from the waters but soon after that, the first
cross was discovered as well and hoisted in the air to the delight of all onlookers. It was decided soon after, that a larger number of boys would rightfully deemed retrievers and those 4 young men have all now been enshrined in history. These events,
rare as they may be, still provided us all the opportunity to receive a most glorious blessing and to share in this wonderful occasion as Greek Orthodox Christians and members of St Nicholas cathedral.
Let us also take a moment to thank God for the strength to continue our battle with the passions and temptations within us
and the guidance we seek to navigate our journey through this life. It is with our Lord Jesus Christ’s love for us, that we are
given yet another chance to receive this blessing from our God the father and the Holy Spirit. These blessings will only bear
fruit if we recognize we are in a constant struggle and the world we live in is
filled with pitfalls and detours. The significance of this year’s event was not
the number of cross retrievers. It is the realization that the celebration of Jesus Christ’s baptism and his ministry on earth must be cherished every day
we have breath in our souls.
Now in the coming weeks and months, we prepare for another Epiphany
celebration in the year 2013. As always, we will proceed from the church, to
waters surrounded by thousands, in an event televised to millions, in the
hopes of receiving yet more blessings. But let us not forget the most important
thing is to conduct ourselves as orthodox Christians and pray for God’s grace
in all that we do.

Healing Our Hearts Through Forgiveness
How can we forgive those who do not want to be forgiven? Our deepest desire is that the
forgiveness we offer will be received. This mutuality between giving and receiving is what
creates peace and harmony. But if our condition for giving forgiveness is that it will be received, we seldom will forgive! Forgiving the other is first and foremost an inner movement. It is an
act that removes anger, bitterness, and the desire for revenge from our hearts and helps us to reclaim
our human dignity. We cannot force those we want to forgive into accepting our forgiveness. They
might not be able or willing do so. They may not even know or feel that they have wounded us.
The only people we can really change are ourselves. Forgiving others is first and foremost healing our own
hearts.

Faith in Action Committee
The Faith in Action committee would like to thank the community for the support we
have received to date on the Dome Renovation/Repair project. We have made significant progress since the first of the 2011. Current status of the project follows:



















 The copper on the dome, and steps leading to the dome were removed.
 We found minimum damage to the infrastructure of the dome and all of it was repaired.
Two layers of waterproofing material were installed on the dome and steps.
A thicker layer of new copper was installed on top of the waterproofing material using state of the art standing seam
technology
The Cross at the top of the dome was removed and replaced with a new Cross which contains a time capsule with the
names of hundreds of our parishioners.
The copper in the troughs that catch the rainwater on each side of the Cathedral were removed and replaced with two
layers of waterproofing material. Much of the damage in the Nave of the Cathedral was caused by water intrusion from
these troughs.
All the sealants on the exterior of the Cathedral were removed and replaced.
The entire exterior of the Cathedral was power washed and a sealer was applied to make the exterior of the Cathedral
waterproof.
All the clear protective panels covering the stained glass windows have been replaced.
The roof on the bell tower has been re-roofed
The ridge cap on the roof was replaced, as we deemed it to be a source of potential leaks in the future
The small dome in the front of the Cathedral has been encased in copper and a new Cross has been installed.
All plaster damage in the Solea, Nave and Narthex of the Cathedral has been repaired.
The entire inside of the Cathedral has been repainted.
Water damage in the dormers at the top of the dome required a special lift to reach these areas have been repaired.
The water damaged icons in the interior of the Cathedral have been repaired.
The external doors of the Cathedral have been refinished.
The granite steps on all entries to the Cathedral have been cleaned and re-grouted.
Lighting in the dome has been replaced.
The electrical panel in the Cathedral has been replaced.
The exterior lighting and speakers have been repaired
All of the work on the exterior of the Cathedral has been completed and much of the interior work has been completed. To
date we have received $450,000 in pledges and contributions. Although we have taken out a $200,000 line-of-credit we have
been able to complete the work to date without using any of the line of credit, we have since closed the line-of-credit. We are
redoubling our fundraising efforts and would like to ask each parishioner to donate additional funds so we can complete this
very successful project. Please make your tax deductible contribution to the St. Nicholas Cathedral Building Fund.
The Faith in Action Committee has developed an Icon of St. Nicholas that is manufactured from the copper that was removed
from the Cathedral dome during the dome renovation/repair project. The St. Nicholas Icon is crafted from the original copper
that has been on the Cathedral dome. The Icon of St. Nicholas was pressed from engraved plates produced by Greek born,
Master Engraver, Peter Kambouris. The finished Icons are a reliefed (3D) image of St. Nicholas in the copper. The copper
Icon is placed in a beautifully crafted wooden frame. There are two sizes of frames, 5 inches by 7 inches or 7 inches by 10
inches. The frames can be ordered any of four colors: copper, black, silver or gold. The framed Icon is delivered in a presentation box with a certificate of authenticity making it suitable for giving as a gift or graduation present.
We have sold almost 420 icons, and have more available. The cost of each the Icon in the 5 inch by 7 inch frame is a $100
donation. The cost of each the Icon in the 7 inch by 10 inch frame is a $150 donation. If you are interested in purchasing an
Icon please contact the Cathedral office or Michael Kouremetis at 727-267-3298.
The Faith in Action committee has recently been assigned the task of repairing the fire security alarm system in the Cathedral
and in Father Tryphon hall. The systems have been recently struck by lightning and are dire need of updating. We have also
assumed responsibility for repairing the air conditioning systems for the Cathedral. Both projects will require significant additional funding. Please consider contributing to the repair of these necessary systems by donating to the St. Nicholas Cathedral
Building Fund.

An Orthodox Experience of the Dinner Table

Perhaps I am mistaken, but I suspect one of the problems
involved in the pursuit of Wisdom is that some folks fancy
they are further along than they really are. I am thinking of
those who read the Upanishads and Plato when they have
yet to master Mother Goose.
Normally the simpler things come first: Grammar before logic.
We crawl first, then walk. We take the pen in hand after we
are competent with the pencil, and maybe the pencil should
wait until we are sufficiently skilled with the crayon.
And we don’t begin alone. The aforementioned implements of
learning, in fact---all of them normally employed in private--depend on our competence with the one human implement
we learned to use in a social setting. I mean that most basic
utensil: the spoon.
Let me state my thesis outright: The quest of Wisdom commences with learning how to eat. The most basic steps towards virtue are mastered at the family table. Character begins with etiquette. Teach a child how to dine like a human
being, and you have gone wonderfully far in his education.
If I had not known this fact before, I would have learned it
from Sirach (especially 31:12-32:13). This aspect of Sirach's
theory flows from his conviction that the quest of Wisdom is a
social enterprise. This is a proposition on which he insists
repeatedly: The wise man is one who knows how to live
wisely in society and spends his life in pursuit of its greater
good. And where does a wise man acquire the rudiments of
this calling? When he first learns to eat with his family.
It is at home (domus) that human beings are---literally--"domesticated." It is during meals that they increase, not only
"in stature," but also "in wisdom" (Luke 2:52). Here they acquire those patterns of affability, restraint, courtesy, and cultivated joy that prepare them for a wise life in a larger world.
In acquiring table discipline---which pertains to language and
posture as well as eating---young human beings are instructed in the simple pleasures of what is called
"conviviality." This literally means "living in common."
Indeed, it is arguable that the lessons learned at the family
table are more fundamental to the pursuit of Wisdom than
those learned in the classroom. It is at meals that souls are
nourished, as well as bodies. It is largely from eating with the
family that helpful information is conveyed and the foundational lines of character are formed.
In this setting, one gradually learns the art of the "inner
check," as Irving Babbitt calls it. Restraint is in order. There
are things that may not be done at table---and certain subjects never spoken of---and certain other things must be said
or done at table.
Without this inner check of discipline, there is no chance of
conviviality. The eater "conforms" to a standard, adopting as
his own a "form" common to those who share the blessings of
the meal.
First, a person learns to pray at table, to thank God for His
blessings, some of which the family shares at mealtime. He
thus acquires the habit of gratitude, which is essential to a
soul pleasing to God. A man that does not pray at meals is no
better than a dog.
Second, because he has just thanked God for his food, one
cannot logically complain of it. This would contradict his
prayer of thanksgiving. On the contrary, he eats gratefully
what is put in front of him, and a child is correctly given no
choice in this matter. He thus learns to receive what life offers
and does not entertain the fancy that experience must conform to his preferences. This simple lesson is indispensable
to the formation of character.
Third, a person learns elementary self-control. He is discouraged from gorging himself like a mule. He thus acquires the
habit of restricting his passions and appetites, a lesson fundamental to the moral formation of character.
Fourth, at the family table one becomes versed in the formalities of speech common in a polite society. Under the gentle
discipline of his elders, he acquires the ability to communicate with others kindly, a trait also vital to the contouring of
character.
Mastered at the family table, these simple disciplines are essential to the social growth of the human being. He will learn
to think of himself as---and feel himself to be---an integral
member of the larger social reality, gradually gaining an
awareness of his place and duties in that society. Becoming
what Henri Bergson calls un moi social, he will learn that
strong and pleasant conviviality essential to a wise life.
Forgiving does not mean forgetting.
When we forgive a person, the memory of the wound might
stay with us for a long time, even throughout our lives.
Sometimes we carry the memory in our bodies as a visible
sign. But forgiveness changes the way we remember.
It converts the curse into a blessing. When we forgive our
parents for their divorce, our children for their lack of
attention, our friends for their unfaithfulness in crisis, our
doctors for their ill advice, we no longer have to experience
ourselves as the victims of events we had no control over.
Forgiveness allows us to claim our own power and not
let these events destroy us; it enables them to become
events that deepen the wisdom of our hearts.
Forgiveness indeed heals memories.

Stepping over Our Wounds
Sometimes we have to "step over" our anger, our jealousy, or
our feelings of rejection and move on. The temptation is to get
stuck in our negative emotions, poking around in them as if we
belong there. Then we become the "offended one," "the forgotten one," or the
"discarded one." Yes,
we can get attached to
these negative identities
and even take morbid
pleasure in them. It
might be good to have
a look at these dark
feelings and explore
where they come from,
but there comes a moment to step over them,
leave them behind and
travel on.

‘Let’s Make Stewardship Our Way of Life’

“WHEW, I’m certainly glad that’s
over. Now I can get back to normal.”
This sentiment is perhaps one of
the most widely
felt emotions, generally in the fall, in
most Greek Orthodox parishes in
America. It follows the two “Main
Events” we frequently dread in our
church lives, namely our Stewardship Sunday and Greek Festival.
Somehow, people we never see
during the year magically get their
GPS navigation systems to again
find their church solely during the
day they will attend (and maybe work) the Greek Festival. And
then, as if Harry Houdini and David Copperfield attended our
parishes, these “part-timers” become like groundhogs that
show us their shadows as they disappear until next year.
On the other hand, Stewardship Sunday strikes fear in the
hearts and minds of many parishioners even more than having
to go to confession. Someone might actually ask us to account
for what we have done with the gifts God gave us. But thankfully for most, the traveling magic show comes into
the pews on only one Sunday, with much fanfare, new slick
banners, brochures and slogans, and then disappears just as
quickly.
Imagine if God only showed up and gave us His gifts one Sunday, or weekend, a year and then He disappeared and left us
completely on our own with no food, nothing to drink, no sunshine, etc. Our Lord gives us unconditional love and gifts
every second of every day of our lives. Without His gifts we
could not exist. The breath of oxygen you just inhaled and the
lungs you used to process it to stay alive were both
gifts from your Father.
And yet we somehow think our stewardship can be relegated
to one Stewardship Sunday or weekend of gyro–making
and baklava–slinging. My simple definition is: “Stewardship is
what you do with the gifts God gave you.” Nothing more complicated than that.
Everything we have is a gift from our Father. And these gifts
are ours for only the limited time we are here on this earth.
And yet we sometimes forget that what we do with those gifts
is one of the measures of whether or not our souls are prepared for salvation and the hoped-for eternal life of theosis
and oneness with our Lord and Savior.
Stewardship is a way of life. It is what we do every second,
minute, hour and day of our life. It isn’t just about writing a
check once a year. It is about demonstrating every day that we
understand what our responsibility is with respect to ALL of
the gifts we have received.
We teach our children to say
“thank you” when they receive
gifts, but do we do the same to
our Father who blesses us
every moment of our lives?
Thankfully, it’s not too late to
walk the talk.
The book Oriented Leadership
says “Stewardship is what a person does, after saying, ‘I believe’
as proof of that belief.”
We all like to talk and tell folks
what “we believe.” But what have
we done lately with the gifts God
gave us? Not just your talents, but including your talents. Not
just your time, but including your time. Not just your money,
but including your money.
What have you done with the amazing thing that you do so
spectacularly? Who in your parish have you taught that thing
that only you can do so well? When was the last time you
brought your wit, wisdom, philosophy, coaching, fix-it skills or
just loving care to one of your Parishioners (or a total stranger)
who was afraid, confused, lost, sick, suffering, hungry, thirsty,
in prison, or just in need?
There is only one thing keeping you from being the incredible
steward you are capable of becoming. And that one thing is
You. I know you are busy. So is everyone else. But every day
of your life, among the trillions of gifts God gives you each
nanosecond, are two very big ones. The first, is the gift of 24
hours. And the second, is the gift of free will to decide what
you will do with the first gift. It is up to you. As we all told our
children at one time or the other: “You are the boss of you.”
What have you done today with the gifts God gave you? In
which ministries of your parish, Metropolis, Archdiocese or
Patriarchate have you assisted this week or month or year?
This is what you are called to do every day, not just the weekend of the Festival or Stewardship Sunday.
You can’t change how you got to where you are, but you can
change where you’re going. You don’t know when you will
meet your Maker and be asked to account for your life.
Perhaps you may not want to wait and hope you’ll get a “Hail
Mary” shot like the thief next to our Lord on the day of His
crucifixion. Ask to be remembered in His kingdom every day,
and in every way you act, and with what you do with the gifts
God gave you.
Don’t wait for the Main Event(s). It might just be too late. Do
something today! And God bless you as you pursue your own

St. Nicholas Dance Ministry Mission Statement:
I. To preserve, perpetuate and promote Greek culture through
the introduction, education and performance of its dance, song
and history within a Christian environment.
II. To foster responsibility and commitment; to nurture and to
support talents and potential in
order to develop productive members of society and thus a productive Christian society.
The St. Nicholas Dance Ministry is completely self-sufficient. With the need of purchasing costumes, attending learning workshops and attending the Hellenic Dance Festival, the Dance Ministry relies solely on its own fundraising. And as good stewards
of our church, we tithe our share of 10% after every event we host. This year we were happy to donate $500 in Bibles to our
Catechetical School.
There are currently about 120 registered dancers, divided into four dance groups ranging from grades one through college. In
addition we have a Choral Group consisting of many of our dancers. We
participate in church and community events, for example, festivals, celebrations, dances, and other special occasions.
Having many children of different ages gives us the opportunity to provide
Christian fellowship within each group and as a whole. Most of our dancers are also involved in other St. Nicholas Youth Ministries such as Cate-

Choir Membership Committee
The Epiphany Youth Choir of St. Nicholas is a unique group of children
between the ages of 4 to 11. They rehearse weekly on Thursdays in Tryfon Hall from 6:30-7:15 pm in preparation for programs and special church
celebrations. Directed by Sandy Chambers and Antonia Harvey, who became friends as young girls in the choir, they work together as a
team. Children are taught the techniques for using the voice properly and
methods for breathing and projecting. Phonetics and learning games are
used to learn the hymns which are sung in Greek and English.
The musical youth program of our church is also designed to perpetuate future choir members for our church and other Greek
Orthodox choirs they may attend. The group is on a temporary break until March 1st.

ΕΙΣΑΓΩΓΗ
Βασικό δόγμα της Χριστιανικής πίστεως γενικώς είναι η
Θεότητα του Ιησού Χριστού. Ο Χριστός είναι το δεύτερο Πρόσωπο
της Μίας Αγίας Ομοοσίου και Αδιαιρέτου Τριάδος. Δηλαδή του
Ενός Θεού, του Μόνου Αληθινού, ο Οποίος είναι Τρισυπόστατος
(Τρεις Υποστάσεις – Τρία Πρόσωπα)· Πατήρ, Υιος και Άγιο
Πνεύμα.
Ο Χριστιανισμός αναγνωρίζει ως ιδρυτή της πίστεώς του τον Ιησού
Χριστό, τον Μονογενή Υιό και Λόγο του Θεού Πατρός, τον
γεννηθέντα εξ Αυτού προ πάντων των αιώνων. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός,
Θεός όντας, εσαρκώθη εκ Πνεύματος Αγίου και Μαρίας της
Παρθένου, της Θεοτόκου, προ 2006 ετών. Κατήλθε δε στη γη ως
τέλειος Θεός και τέλειος άνθρωπος (χωρίς αμαρτία), για να μας
σώσει. Εσταυρώθη αδίκως ο Δίκαιος και την Τρίτη ημέρα
ανεστήθη εκ των νεκρών, αναληφθείς μετά 40νθήμερο στους
Ουρανούς.
Αναμένεται δε η Δευτέρα Έλευσή Του για να κρίνει ζώντας και

Άγιο Πνεύμα, αλλά και Θεάνθρωπος, ταπείνωση και αγάπη και
συγχώρησε τους σταυρωτές Του. Ας Τον μιμηθούμε, πιστεύοντας
σ’ Αυτόν ως Σωτήρα μας και τηρώντας το Ευαγγέλιό Του.
Συναφώς, κρίνουμε σκόπιμο ν’ αναφέρουμε ότι, σύμφωνα με το
Σύμβολο της πίστεώς μας (Ορθόδοξο Δόγμα), το Άγιο Πνεύμα, το
Οποίο είναι το Τρίτο Πρόσωπο του Τριαδικού μας Θεού,
εκπορεύεται ΜΟΝΟΝ από τον Θεό – Πατέρα και είναι Ομοούσιο
προς Αυτόν, αλλά και προς Υιό και Λόγο Του. Είναι δε Κύριο και
Ζωοποιό. Είναι Θεός και συμπροσκυνείται και συνδοξάζεται με τον
Πατέρα και τον Υιό.
Οι Μάρτυρες του Ιεχωβά δεν δέχονται τον Χριστό ως Θεό (Υιό και
Λόγο του Θεού), αλλ’ ως έναν απλό άνθρωπο, ούτε πιστεύουν στην
Ανάστασή Του (Χιλιαστικό Περιοδικό «ΞΥΠΝΑ» της 22.12.1984).
Η Θεότητα του Χριστού, ως γνωστόν, αποδεικνύεται πλήρως από
την Αγία Γραφή (Παλαιά και Καινή Διαθήκη). Επίσης, δεν
δέχονται ότι η ψυχή είναι αθάνατη, πιστεύουν όμως, ότι θα σωθούν
μόνον 144.000 ψυχές, ενώ οι υπόλοιπες θα καταστραφούν.
Περισσότερα στοιχεία, σχετικά με τον ιδρυτή, τη σύσταση, τις
επωνυμίες της Οργάνωσης των Μαρτύρων του Ιεχωβά και τις εν
γένει δοξασίες τους, κατά καιρούς, ως και τους σκοπούς τους, πολύ
συνοπτικά, βέβαια, μπορεί κανείς να αναγνώσει στην από 3.9.2001
Γνωμοδότηση του αξιοτίμου Εισαγγελέως Πλημμελειοδικών
Σερρών κ. Ηλία Νικ. Σεφερίδη, η οποία καταχωρείται κατωτέρω.
Στις διατάξεις αυτής, την οποία ανεύραμε στο Επίσημο Δελτίο της
Εκκλησίας της Ελλάδος ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑ (τεύχος 5ο, Μάϊος 2002),
καταχωρισμένη, αναφέρονται μεταξύ άλλων και τα εξής:
1. Οι Χιλιαστές η Μάρτυρες του Ιεχωβά δεν μπορούν να
αυτοαποκαλούνται ως Χριστιανοί Μάρτυρες του Ιεχωβά, καθ’
όσον δεν δέχονται τον Χριστό ως Θεό και οι δοξασίες τους
συνιστούν βλασφημία κατά του προσώπου του Ιησού Χριστού.
Τόσο από την Ορθοδοξία όσο και από τον Καθολικισμό
χαρακτηρίζονται ως πολέμιες του Χριστιανισμού. Ορθότερο και
δίκαιο θα ήταν να ονομάζονται ως Αντίχριστοι Μάρτυρες του
Ιεχωβά.
2. Ο Χιλιασμός συνιστά παναίρεση και όχι Χριστιανική αίρεση, γι’
αυτό δεν έχει αναγνωριστεί από την αλλοδαπή νομολογία ως
γνωστή θρησκεία, αφού δεν είναι γνωστό το ακολουθούμενο
τυπικό τους και η λατρεία τους.
Τόσον το Γαλλικό Συμβούλιο Επικρατείας όσον και το
Ομοσπονδιακό Διοικητικό Ακυρωτικό Δικαστήριο Γερμανίας δεν
δέχονται τον Χιλιασμό ως γνωστή θρησκεία, διότι η συμπεριφορά
των Μαρτύρων του Ιεχωβά αντίκειται στους δημοκρατικούς
θεσμούς, δηλ. είναι αντίθετη προς τα χρηστά ήθη και την έννομη
τάξη.
3. Οι αυτοαποκαλούμενοι Χριστιανοί Μάρτυρες του Ιεχωβά,
σκοπόν έχουν με τις δηλώσεις τους να παραπλανήσουν και να
προσηλυτίσουν αφελείς, αδιαφόρους προς την Χριστιανική πίστη
και ολιγογραμμάτους ανθρώπους.
Με τις χρησιμοποιούμενες μεθόδους παραβιάζουν τη θρησκευτική
ελευθερία του ατόμου και με πειθώ, άσκηση ψυχολογικών πιέσεων,
προς δε και τη χρησιμοποίηση χωρίων της Αγίας Γραφής, τα οποία
παρερμηνεύουν, επιτυγχάνουν του σκοπού τους, καθιστώντας
αυτούς οπαδούς των δοξασιών τους.
Επισημαίνεται δε ιδιαιτέρως, ότι ο πολίτης υποχρεούται να δηλώνει
ειλικρινά, όσον τούτο ζητείται από τις Αρχές, το θρήσκευμα η το
δόγμα του.
4. Οι ληξίαρχοι υποχρεούνται να καταχωρούν στα ληξιαρχεικά
τους βιβλία ως θρήσκευμα των Μαρτύρων του Ιεχωβά τον αληθή
τίτλο της πίστεώς τους «Μάρτυρες του Ιεχωβά», ανεξάρτητα από
τη δήλωσή τους ως Χριστιανών Μαρτύρων του Ιεχωβά, γιατί τούτο
είναι αντίθετο προς τις δοξασίες τους.
Εξ άλλου, σύμφωνα με τα προεκτεθέντα δεν πιστεύουν ότι ο
Χριστός είναι ιδρυτής και αρχηγός της πίστεώς τους. Επομένως, η
καταχώρηση ψευδών, αναληθών και παραπλανητικών δηλώσεων
των Χιλιαστών στα βιβλία των Ληξιαρχείων δημιουργεί σύγχυση
και συμβάλλει στον προσηλυτισμό αδαών, γιατί οι δηλώσεις τους
αυτές δεν έχουν σχέση με τις θρησκευτικές τους πεποιθήσεις, οι
οποίες – είναι βέβαιο – ότι είναι κατά του Χριστιανισμού,
γενικώτερα.
Κατόπιν των ανωτέρω, παρακαλούμε θερμώς, όλους τους

αναγνώστες – του μικρού αυτού τευχιδίου – εν Χριστώ αδελφούς
μας, όπως το μελετήσουν με ιδιαίτερη προσοχή για να
ενημερωθούν, για ποιούς λόγους πρέπει ν’ αποφεύγουν τους
Αντιχρίστους Μάρτυρες του Ιεχωβά (Χιλιαστές).
Στο απόρρητο Χιλιαστικό Βιβλίο «Λύχνος»αναγράφονται συγκεκριμένα- οι σκοποί των δολίων και επικινδύνων αυτών
εχθρών της Πατρίδας μας και της Ορθοδόξου πίστεώς μας.
Ιδιαιτέρως, μνημονεύεται σε τούτο πως πρέπει να μεταδίδουν τις
δοξασίες τους σε απλοϊκούς ανθρώπους με τις κατ’ επανάληψη
επισκέψεις τους, αλλά και τις οικονομικές βοήθειες σ’ αυτούς.
Κανείς Έλληνας και Ορθόδοξος Χριστιανός να μην πλανηθεί με τα
δολλάριά τους και προδώσει την πίστη του. Οι καιροί μας είναι
χαλεποί. Να μην φοβούμεθα να ομολογούμε τον Κύριό μας Ιησού
Χριστό. Να μη γενεί κανείς προδότης και αντίχριστος. Ζη Κύριος ο
Θεός.
Τέλος, θα πρέπει να επισημάνουμε ότι, βασικό τους δόγμα είναι
πως θα έλθει η χιλιετής βασιλεία στη γη, όπου θα κυβερνήσουν οι
προπάτορες Αβραάμ, Ισαάκ κ.λπ., όταν θα συμπληρωθεί ο αριθμός
των εκλεκτών 144.000. Η επωνυμία τους -ως εκ τούτου-Χιλιαστές

(η Μάρτυρες του Ιεχωβά) είναι ψευδής, απατηλή και
παραπλανητική, διότι υπούλως θέλουν να προσηλυτίσουν τους
αδυνάτους στην πίστη, πως τάχα και αυτοί πιστεύουν στο Χριστό,
ενώ τούτο είναι αναληθές (Χιλιαστικό Περιοδικό της 24.12.1984
υπό τίτλο «ΞΥΠΝΑ»). Ας μην είμαστε αφελείς. Αναντίρρητα,
αιρετικοί (Παπικοί – Φραγκολατίνοι, Προτεστάντες, Μονοφυσίτες
κ.λπ.), αλλά και όσοι άλλοι ανήκουν στην Παναίρεση του
Οικουμενισμού και του Χιλιασμού επιτίθενται συνεχώς και
μεθοδευμένα κατά της Ορθοδοξίας μας για να την εξαφανίσουν.
Όμως ματαιοπονούν. Η Ορθοδοξία είναι η ΜΙΑ και ΜΟΝΗ, Αγία,
Καθολική και Αποστολική Εκκλησία, με Κεφαλή και Αρχηγό τον
Ιησού Χριστό. Ο Ρωμαιοκαθολικισμός δεν αποτελεί Εκκλησία,
γιατί αρχηγό της δεν έχει το Χριστό, αλλά τον «αλάθητο»,
«ισόθεο» και «ανθρωπόθεο» Πάπα.
Γενικώς, οι αιρετικοί πιστεύουμε, ότι γνωρίζουν την Αλήθεια, ότι
δηλ. ο Χριστός είναι ο Υιος του Θεού, αλλά και η Οδός και η
Αλήθεια και η Ζωή. Ας μετανοήσουν, αν θέλουν ειλικρινά, και να
επιστρέψουν συνειδητά στην Ορθοδοξία. Καλό είναι, να
παρακολουθούμε όλους τους Αντιχρίστους δολίους εχθρούς της
Πίστεώς μας και της Πατρίδος μας. Ο Χριστός μεθ’ ημών. Αμήν.

The St. Nicholas YAL is a League of Young Adults between
the ages of 18 & 35. These young adults join together for
Worship, Outreach, Fellowship, and overall interaction with
the Orthodox Church community.
A successful Young Adult League creates a setting where
Young Adults grow spiritually through experiencing the four
characteristics which symbolize the YAL movement. Namely,
Worship (Liturgia), Witness (Martyria), Service (Diakonia),
and Fellowship (Koinonia). Using these four characteristics,
we will live a balanced Orthodox Christian life, growing in His
likeness.
In the year 2011 we were very active as a youth league. YAL
had a very balanced agenda of events, between community
service, our Christian faith, and social fellowship.
YAL hosted several church coffee hours on Sundays along
with occasional bake sales. Whenever there is an opportunity
to lend a helping hand, our Young Adults are quick to get involved with the community. A few months ago YAL members
helped Father Vasilios spread mulch at the preschool. More
community events where YAL has been involved include:

 Collecting Toys for Tots for the less fortunate during the

holidays
Donate turkeys & hams & deliver dinners to homes for St.
Nicholas Christmas Dinner for the homeless
Visiting the nursing homes and singing kalanda with Fr.
Vasilios for Christmas
Help Philoptohos host their annual Christmas Party for
the Abused woman’s shelter & provide gifts for the children
YAL host Open Gym at the St. Nicholas community hall
every Friday night 7-9pm

events where young adults can meet
similar aged peers with mutual moral
values, faith, and culture.
This past year YAL member’s gathered
at the local coffee shop “@ Cafe”
Wednesday nights for socials. Some
other YAL outings include bowling, karaoke, skating and more.

We enjoy participating in local community
gatherings and glendi’s such as “Night on
the Islands” down on the Sponge Docks,
hosted by the city of Tarpon Springs, the

The Young Adult League, along with Father Vasilios also went on a retreat to St.
Augustine in Late October to visit the
Orthodox shrine of St. Photios, and the
OCMC (Orthodox Christian Mission Center).
We believe using these four characteristics, (Worship, Witness, Service, and
Fellowship). We will live a balanced Orthodox Christian life, growing in His likeness. YAL plans on continuing it’s enthusiastic, involvement with the Orthodox
community again in 2012!

Forgiveness, the Cement of Community Life
Community is not possible without the willingness to
forgive one another "seventy-seven times" (see Matthew 18:22). Forgiveness is the cement of community
life. Forgiveness holds us together through good and
bad times, and it allows us to grow in mutual love.
But what is there to forgive or to ask forgiveness for?
As people who have hearts that long for perfect love,
we have to forgive one another for not being able to
give or receive that perfect love in our everyday lives.
Our many needs constantly interfere with our desire
to be there for the other unconditionally. Our love is
always limited by spoken or unspoken conditions.
What needs to be forgiven? We need to forgive one
another for not being God!

Στις 7 Ιανουαρίου του 2012, ο Καλυμνιακός Σύλλογος του
Τάρπον Σπρινκς “Άγιος Παντελεήμων”, είχε την τιμή να
διοργανώσει το 2ο Πανκαλυμνιακό Συνέδριο.
Στο συνέδριο συμμετείχαν Καλύμνιοι από διάφορα μέρη των
ΗΠΑ, οι οποίοι είχαν την ευκαιρία να παραστούν και στον
εορτασμό των Θεοφανίων της κοινότητάς μας. Ευχαριστούμε
τον Καλυμνιακής καταγωγής σεβασμιότατο κκ Νικήτα, τον
θεοφιλέστατο επίσκοπο κκ Σεβαστιανό, καθώς και του δύο μας
ιερείς, τον πατέρα Μιχαήλ και τον πατέρα Βασίλειο, και ΟΛΟΥς όσους μας τίμησαν με την παρουσία τους.
Κατά τη χοροσπερίδα της διοργάνωσεις, χόρεψαν συγκροτήματα από το Οχάιο, τη Νέα Υόρκη και το Τάρπον Σπρινκς και όλα τα έσοδα
της βραδιάς δωρήθηκαν στην εκκλησία μας, τον Άγιο Νικόλαο, ποσό που ανήλθε στις $13,164!
Ευχόμαστε σε όλους Χρόνια Πολλά και Καλή Χρονιά! Εκ μέρους του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου των Καλυμνίων.

On January 7, 2012, the Kalymnian Society of Tarpon Springs “Agios Panteleimon”, had the
honor to host the 2nd Pankalymnian Convention.
During the convention numerious Kalymnians participated from all over the United States, who
also had the opportunity to be present at the Epiphany celebrations of our community. We
would like to thank our fellow Kalymnian his Eminence Bishop Nikita, His Eminence Bishop
Sebastian, as well as both of our priests, Fr. Michael and Fr. Vasilios, and ALL of those who
honored us with their presence.
Dance groups from Ohio, New York and Tarpon Springs performed at the convention's Gala,
whose proceeds all were donated to our church, St. Nicholas Cathedral and came to $13,164!

Receiving Forgiveness
There are two sides to forgiveness: giving and receiving. Although at first
sight giving seems to be harder, it often appears that we are not able to offer
forgiveness to others because we have not been able fully to receive it. Only
as people who have accepted forgiveness can we find the inner freedom to
give it. Why is receiving forgiveness so difficult? It is very hard to say,
"Without your forgiveness I am still bound to what happened between us.
Only you can set me free." That requires not only a confession that we have
hurt somebody but also the humility to acknowledge our dependency on others. Only when we can receive forgiveness can we give it.

Εἶναι ἀπαραίτητο νά νηστεύουμε…;
Πρώτα θα κάνω λόγο για την εγκράτεια στα φαγητά, η οποία
είναι αντίθετη της γαστριμαργίας, και για τον τρόπο των
νηστειών και την ποσότητα των φαγητών. Και αυτά, όχι από
τον εαυτό μου, αλλά καθώς παραλάβαμε από τους αγίους
Πατέρες. Εκείνοι λοιπόν, δεν έχουν παραδώσει έναν κανόνα
νηστείας, ούτε έναν τρόπο της διατροφής, ούτε το ίδιο μέτρο,
γιατί δεν έχουν όλοι την ίδια δύναμη, είτε λόγω ηλικίας, είτε
ασθενείας, είτε καλύτερης συνήθειας του σώματος.Έχουν
όμως παραδώσει σε όλους έναν σκοπό, να
αποφεύγουμε την αφθονία και να αποστρεφόμαστε
το χορτασμό της κοιλιάς.Έχουν δει στην πράξη ότι είναι
ωφελιμότερο και βοηθά στην καθαρότητα το να τρώει κανείς
μια φορά την ημέρα από το να τρώει κάθε τρείς ή τέσσερις ή
εφτά ώρες. Γιατί λένε, εκείνος που επεκτείνεται υπέρμετρα
στην νηστεία, υπέρμετρα κατόπιν τρώει.
Και από αυτό, άλλοτε εξαιτίας της υπερβολής της
αποχής από την τροφή ατονεί το σώμα και γίνεται πιο
απρόθυμο για τις πνευματικές εργασίες, και άλλοτε
όταν γεμίσει από το βάρος των τροφών προκαλεί
αμέλεια και εξασθένηση της ψυχής.
Και πάλι οι άγιοι Πατέρες δοκίμασαν και είδαν ότι δεν είναι
για όλους κατάλληλη η διατροφή με χόρτα, ούτε με όσπρια,
ούτε όλοι μπορούν να τρέφονται μόνο με ξερό ψωμί. Και
άλλος, καθώς είπαν, ενώ τρώει δύο λίτρες ψωμί, πεινά ακόμη,
ενώ άλλος τρώει μία λίτρα ή έξ ουγγιές και χορταίνει. Σε
όλους λοιπόν, όπως είπα, ένα κανόνα εγκράτειας έχουν
παραδώσει, το να μην ξεγελιούνται με το χορτασμό της
κοιλίας, ούτε να παρασύρονται από την ηδονή του
λάρυγγα. Γιατί δεν είναι μόνο η διαφορά της ποιότητας
των τροφών, αλλά και η ποσότητα που ανάβει τα
πυρωμένα βέλη της πορνείας. Γιατί με οποιαδήποτε
τροφή όταν γεμίσει η κοιλιά, γεννά το σπόρο της διαφθοράς.
Και πάλι δεν είναι μόνο η κραιπάλη του κρασιού που φέρνει
μέθη στη διάνοια, αλλά και η αφθονία του νερού και κάθε
τροφής η υπερβολική χρήση, τη ζαλίζει και φέρνει νύστα
σ’αυτήν. Αιτία της καταστροφής των Σοδομιτών δεν
ήταν η κραιπάλη του κρασιού και των διαφόρων
φαγητών, αλλά η αφθονία του άρτου, κατά τον
προφήτη.
Τις τροφές τις
χρησιμοποιούμε
τόσο ώστε να
ζήσουμε, όχι για
να
σκλαβωθούμε
στις ορμές της
επιθυμίας. Η
μετρημένη και
μέσα σε λογικά
όρια τροφή
βοηθά στην
υγεία του
σώματος, δεν
αφαιρεί την
αγιότητα.
Ακριβής
κανόνας
εγκράτειας όπως
παρέδωσαν οι
Πατέρες είναι να σταματούμε να τρώμε πρίν
χορτάσουμε. Και ο Απόστολος που είπε: «Μη
φροντίζετε για τη σάρκα, πώς να ικανοποιήσετε τις
επιθυμίες της», δεν εμπόδισε την αναγκαία κυβέρνηση της
ζωής, αλλά απαγόρευσε την φιλήδονη φροντίδα.
Άλλωστε, για την τέλεια καθαρότητα της ψυχής, δεν
αρκεί μόνη η εγκράτεια στα φαγητά αν δεν συντρέχουν και
οι υπόλοιπες αρετές. Τη μερική καθαρότητα της ψυχής,
μέσω της σωφροσύνης, ιδιαίτερα κατορθώνουν η
νηστεία και η εγκράτεια. Γιατί είναι αδύνατον εκείνος που
έχει γεμάτη την κοιλιά του, να κάνει νοερό πόλεμο εναντίον
του πνεύματος της πορνείας.
Ώστε λοιπόν πρώτος αγώνας μας ας είναι να
συγκρατούμε την κοιλιά μας και να υποδουλώνουμε το
σώμα. Όχι μόνο με νηστεία, αλλά και με αγρυπνία και κόπο
και πνευματικά αναγνώσματα και με το να μαζεύουμε την
καρδιά μας πάνω στο φόβο της κολάσεως και στον πόθο της
βασιλείας των Ουρανών.

Forgiveness, the Way to Freedom
To forgive another person from the heart is an act of liberation. We set that person free from the negative bonds that
exist between us. We say, "I no longer hold your offense against you" But there is more. We also free ourselves from the
burden of being the "offended one." As long as we do not forgive those who have wounded us, we carry them with us
or, worse, pull them as a heavy load. The great temptation is to cling in anger to our enemies and then define ourselves
as being offended and wounded by them. Forgiveness, therefore, liberates not only the other but also ourselves. It is the
way to the freedom of the children of God.

Ή νηστεία τής Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής
Μεταξύ τών μακρών νηστειών τού έτους ή νηστεία τής
Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής είναι ή αρχαιότερη καί
αϋστηρότερη περίοδος νη­στείας. Μαζί μέ τή νηστεία τής
Τετάρτης καί τής Παρασκευής ανάγει τήν αρχή της σ' αϋ­τή
τήν αποστολική έποχή, όπως μπορούμε νά συμπεράνουμε
άπό αδιαμφισβήτητες Ιστορι­κές μαρτυρίες που έχουμε.
1. 'Αφετηρία καί πυρήνα αϋτής τhς νη­στείας θά πρέπει νά
θεωρήσουμε τήν αρχαιό­τατη νηστεία πρό τον Πάσχα, ή
όποία καθιε­ρώθηκε εϊς ανάμνησιν τών παθών τού Κυρίου
καί ώς περίοδος προπαρασκευής τών πιστών γιά τήν έορτή
τού Πάσχα καί τών κατηχουμέ­νων γιά τό Βάπτισμα. Οί
Άποστολικές Δια­ταγές συνδέουν τήν καθιέρωση τής
νηστείας τού Πάσχα μέ τά λόγια τού Κυρίου «όταν άπαρθη
απ' αϋτων ό νυμφίος, τότε νηστεύ­σουσιν έν έκείναις ταϊς
ήμέραις» (Μάρκ. 2,20' Ματθ. 9,15' Λουκ. 5,35). «'Εκεϊναι αί
ήμέραι» είναι κατά τίς Διαταγές αυτές κατά τίς όποίες ό
Κύριος καί Νυμφίος «ήρθη άφ' ημών ϋπό τών ψευδωνύμων
'Ιουδαίων και σταυρω προσεπάγη καί με­τά άνόμων
έλογίσθη'. Διό παραινουμεν καί
«Είναι αληθινά μακάριος καί τρισμακά­ριος εκεϊνος που
τηρεί έγκράτεια, διότι πρα­γματικά ή έγκράτεια είναι μεγάλη
αρετή...
Είναι εγκράτεια στις τροφές τό νά όρίζει κανείς τόν εαυτό τον
καί νά μήν επιδιώκει τροφές υπερβολικές ή φαγητά
πανάκριβα, τό νά μήν τρώγει κανείς πρίν άπό τόν κατάλλη­λο
καιρό ή πρίν άπό τήν ώρα, τό νά μήν εί­ναι αχόρταγος στα
ώραϊα φαγητά, τό νά μήν επιθυμεϊ τό ένα φαγητό ύστερα άπό
τό άλλο.
Είναι εγκράτεια στό ποτό τό νά όριζει κανείς τόν εαυτό τον
καί νά μήν κάθεται μα­ζί μέ άλλους σέ οινοποσίες ή σέ
απολαύσεις οίνων, τό νά μήν πίνει οίνο άφοβα, τό νά μήν
επιδιώκει τίς ποικιλίες τών ποτών καί τις άπολανσεις τών
παρασκευασμένων κραμά­των, τό νά μήν πίνει χωρίς μέτρο,
όχι μόνο τό κρασί άλλά, άν είναι δυνατό, ακόμη καί τό νερό.
Είναι έγκράτεια στήν πονηρή επιθυμία καί ήδονή, τό νά
όριζει κανείς τες αισθήσεις τον καί νά μήν συμπαρασύρεται
άπό τίς έπι­Θυμίες που παρουσιάζονται, τό νά μή συγκα­
τατίθεται στούς λογισμούς που υποκινούν τό πάθος τής
φιληδονίας, τό νά μήν χάνει τό θέλημα τής σαρχός, άλλά
αντίθετα νά χαλι­ναγωγεί τά πάθη μέ τό φόβο τον Οεον»h8.
ΕΦΡΑΙΜ Ο ΣΥΡΟΣ
ύμϊν νηστεύειν ταύτας, ώς καί ήμεϊς ένηστεύ­σαμεν έν τώ
ληφθήναι αυτόν αφ' ημών άχρις έσπέρας».
2. `Ο χρόνος τής νηστείας πρό του Πάσχα αρχικά δέν ήταν
ούτε μεγάλος ούτε καί ο ίδιος σέ όλες τίς τοπικές 'Εκκλησίες.
`Υπήρχε δηλαδή στήν πρώτη 'Εκκλησία έλευθερία καί όχι
απόλυτη όμοιομορφία. Ποικιλία ακόμη παρατηρούμε καί
στόν τρόπο, μέ τόν όποίο νήστεύαν οί χριστιανοί αυτήν τήν
περίοδο.
Πότε ακριβώς έμφανίζεται ή Τεσσαρακο­στή ώς περίοδος
νηστείας πρό τής έορτής τον Πάσχα, είναι δύσκολο νά
καθορισθεί μέ ακρίβεια. Μία αναφορά στήν Τεσσαρακοστή
τού 5ον Κανόνος τής Α' οϊκουμενικής Συνό­δου, που συνήλθε
στή Νίκαια τής Βιθυνίας, μάς όδηγεϊ στό συμπέρασμα ότι
κατά τήν έποχή πού συγκλήθηκε ή Σύνοδος (325 μ.Χ.) ή
Τεσσαρακοστή αποτελούσε καθιερωμένο Θεσμό σ' όλόκληρη
τήν 'Εκκλησία.
'Αλλες Ιστορικές μαρτυρίες, όπως αυτή τού Ιστορικού
Εύσεβίου Καισαρείας, αναφέρον­ται ακόμη σαφέστερα στήν
ύπαρξη τής Τεσ­σαρακοστής καί συνδέουν τήν καθιέρωσή
της ώς περιόδου νηστείας καί πνευματικής προ­παρασκευής
γιά τό Πάσχα μέ τήν τεσσαρα­κονθήμερη νηστεία τού Κυρίου
καί τών προ­φητών Μωύσή καί 'Ηλία.
3. "Οπως στήν αρχική νηστεία πρό τού Πάσχα, έτσι καί στη
νηστεία τής Τεσσαρακο­στής υπήρχε μεγάλη ποικιλία από
τόπο σέ τόπο μέχρι τήν όριστική διαμόρφωσή της. Διαφορές
υπήρχαν καί στόν υπολογισμό τής χρονικής διάρκειάς της καί
στόν τρόπο, μέ τόν όποϊο οί χριστιανοί τηρούσαν τή νηστεία.
Αύτό όμως πού μέ ασφάλεια μπορούμε νά υποστηρίξουμε
είναι ότι ανέκαθεν ή νηστεία τής Τεσσαρακοστής ήταν πολυ
αυστηρή νη­στεία. `Ο 69ος Κανών των αγίων 'Αποστόλων
απειλεϊ μέ καθαίρεση τούς κληρικούς καί μέ αφορισμό τούς
λαϊκούς, πού δέν νηστεύουν ατην άγίαν Τεσσαρακοστήν τού
Πάσχα». Κατά τόν 50ό Κανόνα τής τοπικής Συνόδου τής Λαο
­δικείας (συγκλήθηκε γύρω στό 360 μ.Χ.) «δεϊ πάσαν τήν
Τεσσαρακοστήν νηστεύειν ξηροφα­γούντες».
`Ως πρός τά είδη τροφών καί ποτών, από τά όποϊα έπρεπε οί
χριστιανοί νά απέχουν, ή αρ­χή πού άπό ένωρίς έπικράτησε
ήταν ότι οί νη­στεύοντες απέχουν άπό τροφές έξ αϊματος
(κρέας - ψάρια), από τροφές ζωϊκής προελεύ­σεως
(γαλακτοκομικά προϊόντα καί αύγά) καί από τόν οίνο. `Ο
τύπος νησεείας γιά όλη τήν Τεσσαρακοστή ήταν νά
παραμένουν οί χρι­στιανοί άσιτοι μέχρι τήν ένάτη ώρα (3
μ.μ) καί νά απέχουν άπό τίς τροφές πού αναφέραμε κατά τό
γεύμα.
4. Τό όνομα Τεσσαρακοστή πού προσέλαβε ή πρό τον Πάσχα
μακρά περίοδος νηστείας, συνδέεται σίγουρα μέ τόν άριθμό
τών σαράν­τα ήμερών νηστείας που ή περίοδος περιλαμ­
βάνει. Οί Άποστολικές Διαταγές συνιστών­τας τόν εορτασμό
διαφόρων χριστιανικών εορτών, προσθέτουν: «Μεθ' άς ύμϊν
φυλα­κτέα ή νηστεία τής Τεσσαρακοστής, μνήμην
περιέχουσα τής του Κυρίου πολιτείας τε καί νομοθεσίας».
'Οτι τό όνομα Τεσσαρακοστή σχετίζεται μέ τόν άριθμό τών
σαράντα ήμερών νηστείας, φαίνεται καί άπό τά όσα μάς λένε
οί 'Απο
σcολικές Διαταγές στή συνέχεια:
«'Επιτελείσθω δέ ή νηστεία αύτη πρό τής νηστείας τον
Πάσχα (προφανώς έννοουν τή νηστεία τής Μεγάλης
`Εβδομάδας), άρ­χομένη μέν από Δευτέρας (τής Καθαράς
δηλαδή), πληρούμένη δέ είς Παρασκευήν (τήν παραμονή τον
Σαββάτού τον Λαζά­ρου). Μεθ' άς (τίς σαράντα ήμέρες τής
Τεσσαρακοστής) άπονηστευσαντες άρξα­σθε τής άγίας τον
Πάσχα εβδομάδος, νη­στενοντες αυτήν πάντες μετά φόβού
καί τρόμού».

Η Τεσσαρακοστή πολυ ενωρίς ονομάστη­κε Μεγάλη. `Ο
χαρακτηρισμός αυτός τής άποδόθηκε όχι μόνο γιά νά
διακρίνεται άπό τίς άλλες μακρές νηστεϊες του έτους, άλλά
καί γιά νά έξαρθεϊ ή σημασία της: ή αυστη­ρότητα της
νηστείας καί γενικότερα της ασκήσεως που προϋποθέτει καί
ό σκοπός χά­ριν τον όποίον καθιερώθηκε, ή πνευματική
Κατά τήν έβδομάδα αυτή απαγορεύεται ή κρεοφαγία καί
επιτρέ­πεται -όλες τις ήμέρες- νά καταλύουμε ψάρια, τυρί
(καί όλα τά άλλα γαλακτοκομικά είδη) καί αυγά. Μέ τήν
Κυριακή τής Τυρινής κλείνει ή προπαρασκευαστική περίοδος
τών τριών εβδομάδων καί άπό τήν επομένη εισ­ερχόμαστε
στή Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή.
ΧΡΕΟΣ ΤΩΝ ΧΡΙΣΤΙΑΝΩΝ
Η ΝΗΣΤΕΙΑ
6. Πώς πρέπει νά νηστεύούμε σήμερα τή Μεγάλη
Τεσσαρακοστή; Οπως είπαμε ήδη, ή νηστεία τής Μεγάλης
Τεσσαρακοστής ήταν άπαρχής Ιδιαίτερα αύστηρή. Μέ
ανάλογη άγωνιστική διάθεση επιδιώκουμε οί 'Ορθόδο­ξοι νά
τήν τηρούμε καί σήμερα.
«Πρέπει καί ήμείς, αδελφοί μου, οί ευσε­βείς χριστιανοί νά
νηστεύωμεν πάντοτε, μά περισσότερον τήν Τετράδη, διατί
έπουλήθη­χε ό Κύριος καί τήν Παρασκευή, διατί εσταυρώθη.
`Ομοίως έχομε χρέος νά νη­στεύωμεν καί τές άλλες
Τεσσαρακοστές, κα­θώς εφώτισε τό άγιον Πνεύμα τούς
άγίους Πατέρας τής 'Εκκλησίας μας καί μάς έγρα­ψαν διά νά
νηστεύωμεν, νά νεκρώνωμεν τά πάθη, νά ταπεινώνωμεν τήν
σάρκα, τό σώμα, όπού είναι ένας λύκος, ένα γουρούνι, ένα
θηρίον, ένα λεοντάρι. Καί μάλιστα μέ τά όλίγα ζούμεν μέ
ευκολία καί όταν τρώγωμεν πολλά, θέλομεν καί έξοδα πολλά.
'Εγώ τώρα ήμπορώ νά ζήσω μέ εκατό δράμια ψωμί 'Εκείνα τά
ευλογεί ό Θεός, διατί είναι αναγκαία καί όχι νά τρώγωμεν
εκατόν δέκα. 'Εκείνα τά δέκα τά καταραται, διατί είναι
χαράμι, είναι εκεινού τού πεινασμένου. Φυ­λάγετε αυτές τές
τέσσαρες Τεσσαρακοστές, χριστιανοί μου; 'Εδώ πώς
πηγαίνετε; Άν είστε χριστιανοί, πρέπει νά τές φυλάγετε,
μάλιστα τήν Μεyάλην Σαρακοστή»
προετοιμασία μας δηλαδή γιά τήν κορυφαία εορτή τον
Πάσχα.
5. `Η μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή όπως είναι γνωστό, αρχίζει άπό
τήν Καθαρά Δευτέρα. Τό διάστημα τριών εβδομάδων άπό τήν
Κυ­ριακή τον Τελώνου καί Φαρισαίου, μέ τήν όποία αρχίζει ή
περίοδος του Τριωδίου («ανοίγει τό Τριώδιο», λέει ό λαός
μας), μέ­χρι τήν Κυριακή τής Τυρινής που προηγεϊται,
άποτελεϊ ένα προπαρασκευαστικό στάδιο, τό όποίο μάς
προετοιμάζει γιά νά εϊσέλθουμε στήν Τεσσαρακοστή. Τά
άγιογραφικά ανα­γνώσματα καί ή Θαυμάσια υμνογραφία
που πάλλει άπό κατάνυξη καί συντριβή μάς ύπο­γραμμίζουν
τή σημασία τής αληθους προσευ­χης, τής ειλικρινής
μετανοίας, τής νηστείας καί τής εγκράτειας.`
Η πρώτη εβδομάδα -που όνομάζεται καί προσφωνήσιμος
επειδή άποτελεϊ τήν εϊσ­αγωγή τής όλης περιόδου- είναι
άπολυτή, δηλαδή καταλύουμε εϊς πάντα όλες τις ήμέ­
ρες καί κατά τήν Τετάρτη καί τήν Παρα­σκευή.
Τή δεύτερη εβδομάδα (άπό τήν Κυριακή τον 'Ασώτου μέχρι
τών 'Απόκρεω) γίνεται κατάλυση εϊς πάντα όλες τις ήμέρες,
έκτός άπό τήν Τετάρτη καί τήν Παρασκευή. Τίς δύο
αυτές ήμέρες υπάρχει πλήρης νηστεία, όπως κατά τις ήμέρες
τής Τεσσαρακοστής. `Η έβδομάδα αυτή -καί κυρίως ή τρίτη
Κυρια­κή - όνομάζεται των 'Απόκρεω, προφανως διότι τότε
σταματούμε νά καταλύουμε κρέας• κατά κάποιον τρόπο
δηλαδή τό άποχαιρετού­με, προκειμένου σέ λίγο νά
αρχίσουμε τή νη­στεία .
Η τρίτη έβδομάδα αρχίζει άπό τή Δευτέ­ρα (μετά τήν
Κυριακή τών 'Απόκρεω) καί λή­γει τήν Κυριακή τής
Τυροφάγου. Τήν έβδο­μάδα αυτή -γνωστή εύρύτερα τής
Τυροφά­γου- ό άγιος Θεόδωρος ό Στουδίτης τήν όνομάζει
«προνήστιμον» καί ή υμνογραφία «προχαθάρσιον»
έβδομάδα, επειδή κατ' έξ­οχήν αυτή μάς προετοιμάζει γιά νά
εϊσέλθου­με στήν Τεσσαρακοστή.
Μέ ιδιαίτερη αύστηρότητα νηστεύουμε τήν πρώτη ή άλλιώς
Καθαρά Εβδομάδα. Πολλοί —καί όχι μόνο μοναχοί— τηρούν
τό λεγόμενο τριήμερο απέχουν δηλαδή από κάθε είδος τρο­
φής κατά τίς τρεϊς πρώτες ήμέρες καί κοινω­νούν κατά τήν
πρώτη λειτουργία των Προηγια­σμένων. Αλλοι παραμένουν
ασιτοι μέχρι τήν ώρα τού Μεγάλου 'Απόδειπνου. Λάδι (καί οί
­νο) καταλύουμε μόνο τό Σάββατο καί τήν Κυ­ριακή.
Μέ τόν ίδιο περίπου τρόπο όφείλουμε νά νηστεύουμε καί τό
άλλο διάστημα τής Τεσσα­ρακοστής. Άν Θέλουμε νά είμαστε
άκριβεϊς, άπό λάδι απέχουμε όλες τίς ήμέρες τής εβδο­
μάδας καί όχι μόνο τήν Τετάρτη καί τήν Παρα­σκευή. Κατά
τή Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή, σύμ­φωνα μέ τούς Κανόνες, λάδι
καταλύουμε μόνο τό Σάββατο καί τήν Κυριακή. Άν
όρισμένοι τώρα καταλύουν λάδι καί άλλες ήμέρες (Δευ­τέρα,
Τρίτη, Πέμπτη), αυτό Θά πρέπει νά γίνε­ται μόνο γιά
λόγους αδυναμίας («δι' άσθέ­νειαν σωματικήν», όπως λέει
ό 69ος 'Αποστο­λικός Κανών) καί μετά από έγκριση τού
Πνευ­ματικού τους.
7. "Οπως είπαμε, κατά τή Μεγάλη Τεσσα­ρακοστή
ανεμπόδιστα καί υποχρεωτικά κατά­λυση οίνου καί έλαίου
έχουμε μόνο τά Σάββα­τα καί τίς Κυριακές. 'Εξαίρεση επίσης
γίνεται γιά τήν εορτή των άγίων Τεσσαράκοντα Μαρ­
τύρων, κατά τήν όποία επιτρέπεται ή κατάλυση οίνου καί
έλαίου καί γιά τήν εορτή του Ευαγ­γελισμου τής
Θεοτόκου κατά τήν όποία κατα­λύουμε ψάρι.
Σέ ό,τι άφορά τήν κατάλυση ιχθύων κατά τήν Κυριακή τών
Βαΐων υπάρχει διχογνωμία. Μερικά μοναστηριακά Τυπικά,
τό Τριώδιο καί ό άγιος Θεόδωρος ό Στουδίτης συνιστουν τήν
κατάλυση ιχθύων, άφ' ενός γιά τή λήξη τής νηστείας (ή
νηστεία τής Μ. Τεσσαρακο­στής λήγει τό εσπέρας τής
Παρασκευής πρό τού Σαββάτου τού Λαζάρου) καί άφ' έτέρον
γιά νά τιμηθει ό θρίαμβος τού Χριστού επί του Θανάτου μέ
τήν άνάσταση του Λαζάρου. Έτσι ή Κυριακή τών Βαϊων
λογίζεται ώς Δε­σποτική εορτή. 'Αντίθετα, ό άγιος Νικόδημος
ό `Αγιορείτης θεωρεί ώς νεώτερη προσθήκη τήν αναγραφή
του Τριωδίου, που συνιστά κα­τάλυση ιχθύων, καί τήν
αποκλείει.
Τί πρέπει νά γίνεται; Έχουμε τή γνώμη ότι, λόγω καί τής
γενικευμένης συνήθειας, γιά τους χριστιανούς του κόσμου
μπορεί νά ισχυει ή επιεικέστερη εκδοχή, δηλαδή ή κατάλυση
ιχθύων. Αν αρχαία μοναστηριακά Τυπικά κι ένας Θεόδωρος
Στουδίτης συνιστουν τήν κα­τάλυση γιά τους μοναχούς, είναι
νοητό εμείς νά τήν άπαγορεύουμε στους λαϊκούς;
8. Ο ιδιαίτερος τόνος αυστηρότητας που χαρακτηρίζει τή
νηστεία τής Καθαράς 'Εβδο­μάδας διακρίνει καί τή νηστεία
τής Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας. Μεγάλη όνομάζεται, καθώς έ­
ξηγεϊό άγιος 'Ιωάννης ό Χρυσόστομος, όχι γιατί διαφέρει

χρονικά σέ κάτι άπό τίς άλλες εβδομάδες τού χρόνον («οϋκ
έπειδή πλέον έχει τό μήκος τών ωρων, οϋδέ έπειδή πλείους
ημέρας έχει»), άλλά λόγω τών μεγάλων γεγο­νότων τής
πίστεως που εορτάζουμε κατ' αϋ­τήν καί των ϋπερφυων
αγαθων που μάς χαρί­στηκαν («έπειδή μεγάλα τινά καί
απόρρητα τυγχάνει τά ϋπάρξαντα ήμϊν έν αϋτή αγαθά. 'Εν
γάρ ταύτη ό χρόνιος έλύθη πόλεμος, θά­νατος έσβέσθη,
κατάρα άνηρέθη..., Θεού κα­ταλλαγή πρός ανθρώπους
γέγονεν, οϋρανός βάσιμος γέγονεν»).
Η νηστεία τής Μεγάλης `Εβδομάδας -τό είπαμε ήδη- είναι
αρχαιότατη. 'Αποτελεί, θά λέγαμε, ιδιαίτερο τμημα της όλης
νηστείας τής Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής, έξω άπό τόν αριθμό
τών σαράντα νηστήσιμων ήμερων, καί οί χριστιανοί
ανέκαθεν τήν σέβονταν βαθιά καί τήν νήστευαν μέ πολλή
αϋστηρότητα.
Είναι πολυ χαρακτηριστικά τά όσα μάς λένε γιά τή νηστεία
τής Μεγάλης `Εβδομάδας οί Αποστολικές Διαταγές:
«'Εν ταϊς ήμέραις ουν του Πάσχα νη­στεύετε, άρχόμενοι άπό
Δευτέρας μέχρι τής Παρασκευής καί Σαββάτου, έξ ημέρας,
μόνω χρώμενοι άρτω καί άλί καί λαχάνοις καί ποτω υδατι,
οίνου δέ καί κρεων άπέ­χεσθε εν ταύταις ήμέραι γάρ εϊσι πέν­
θους, άλλ' ούχ εορτης. Τήν μέντοι Παρα­σκενήν καί τό
Σάββατον όλόκληρον νη­στεύσατε, ος δύναμις πρόσεστιν
τοιαύτη, μηδενός γευόμενοι μέχρις άλεκτοροφωνίας νυκτός'
εϊ δέ τις άδννατεϊ τάς δύο σννά­πτειν όμου, φυλασσέσθω κάν
τό Σάββατον. Λέγει γάρ που αυτός ό Κύριος περί εαυ­του
φάσκων' "'Οταν άπαρθη άπ' αυτών ό νυμφίος, νηστεύσουσιν
έν εκείναις ταϊς ήμέραις».
9. "Ολες τις ήμέρες, λοιπόν, άπό τή Μ. Δευτέρα ώς τό Μ.
Σάββατο απέχουμε άπό λάδι καί τηρούμε ξηροφαγία. Γιά
τή Μ. Πέμ­πτη υπάρχει κάποια σύγχυση. Τό Τριώδιο,
όρισμένα μοναστηριακά Τυπικά καί μιά εϋ­ρυτατα
διαδεδομένη συνήθεια μεταξύ των χριστιανων επιτρέπουν
τήν κατάλυση οίνου καί έλαίου προφανώς πρός τιμήν του
μυστη­ρίου τής Θείας Ευχαριστίας πού μάς παρέδω­σε ό
Κύριος κατά τήν ήμέρα αυτή καί λόγω της προσελεύσεως
πολλων πιστων στή Θεία Μετάληψη. 'Αντίθετα, ό άγιος
Νικόδημος ό `Αγιορείτης είναι επιφυλακτικός. Φρονουμε
ταπεινά ότι γιά τούς χριστιανούς του κόσμου μπορεϊ νά γίνει
ανεκτή ή κατάλυση ελαίού. 'Απεναντίας, οί μοναχοί στίς
Μονές, πού ακολουθούν γενικότερα αυστηρότερο τύπο
νηστείας, άς απέχουν.
'Ιδιαίτερη προσοχή θά πρέπει νά έπιδει­χθεϊ γιά τό Μέγα
Σάββατο. Είναι ήμέρα αυ­στηρής νηστείας, τό μόνο
Σάββατο του έτους πού νηστεύεται. `Επομένως ατιμάζουν
τήν ϊερότητα τής ημέρας καί ασεβούν βαρύτατα όσοι, μέ τό
αϊτιολογικό δηθεν ότι «έγινε ή πρώτη ανάσταση» (!),
σπεύδουν νά καταπα­τήσουν τή νηστεία.
Icaros had good intentions when he ignored his father’s
warnings about the sun and sea. He wanted to see more
of the beautiful island. Little did the daring lad with wax
wings know that the Island would bear his name someday.
I, on the other hand did listen to my mother most of the time
about being an Icarian.
During my childhood my Greek
Heritage was always reinforced, as documented in the
popular movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. My Papou used
to make me circle words in the newspaper that were of
Greek derivatives. Thus, early on I began to see what
made us unique as my family forged a life in the United
States yet clung to the Icarian way of life. I wasn’t just a
Greek, I was an Icarian. For example, if I met someone at
a church dance the first question always asked…..what part
of Greece are you from …..Or where were your parents
born?
Oh how my cousins and I looked forward to the Icarian conventions! None of my American friends had an experience
like this……talk about a family reunion! I realized in my late
teens that the convention was the one event that insured
an Icarian would meet and marry an Icarian. My mother
would view any young man interested in me that was not
Icarian as un acceptable. If he was American …..God forbid!
My mother and grandmother taught me much about life
and my heritage. Our Icarian roots were firmly planted as
members of a local chapter of the Icarian organization.
I recently attended a Helios Chapter Dance and I watched
as people came in and greeted each other warmly with
hugs and kisses. Young and old displayed joy and a sense
of anticipation for dinner and the glendi to begin. As the
music began I closed my eyes briefly to listen. It was as
though I was a teenager again. The music was the same.
The people were different and yet all was the same. A
middle aged man held his granddaughter’s hand and
walked to the dance floor and joined the line dancing. He
moved with such passion and grace .The little girl followed
her grandfather’s steps perfectly. Obviously it was not her
first time on the dance floor. I couldn’t help remembering
my family and cousins teaching me the various line
dances many years ago.
In many ways the Icarian chapters have perpetuated our
heritage and traditions. Icaros would not have flown away if
he had landed safely. He would have stayed on the island
and made a wonderful life for himself. Icaros did not get to
see and learn about the Island and its people. My siblings
and I are very fortunate to have lived with a front row seat
observing and learning how to be Icarian.

Αγαπητοί Γονείς και Κηδεμόνες
Σ τις 15 Σεπτεμβρίου, το απογευματινό σχολείο του Αγίου Νικολάου καλωσόρισε τους μαθητές και τους γονείς από τις
καλοκαιρινές τους διακοπές, με τον παραδοσιακό τρόπο του Αγιασμού και της Ευλογίας.Ο Πατέρας Μιχαήλ ευλόγησε τους
μαθητές, δασκάλους και γονείς και ευχήθηκε μία υγιής και παραγωγική χρονιά.
Οι στόχοι μας για μία καινούργια σχολική χρονιά με ελπίδα και συνέχεια της διδασκαλίας που περιέχει την Ελληνική γλώσσα,
Θρησκεία, Ιστορία και Γεωγραφία.

An Obituary printed in the Miami Herald........ Interesting and sadly rather true.
'Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one
knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:



Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
Why the early bird gets the worm;
Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies
(adults, not children,are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-yearold boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch;
and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
Common Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin
to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could
sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled
a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust his wife, Discretion his daughter, Responsibility his son,
Reason
He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame and I'm A Victim. Not many
attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

Όταν βρίσκεσαι πληγωμένος, επειδή έπεσες σε κάποιο
αμάρτημα λόγω αδυναμίας σου ή καμιά φορά με τη θέλησή
σου μη δειλιάσεις· ούτε να ταραχθείς γι’ αυτό, αλλά αφού
επιστρέψεις αμέσως στον Θεό, μίλησε έτσι: «Βλέπε, Κύριέ
μου· έκανα τέτοια πράγματα, σαν τέτοιος που είμαι·
ούτε ήταν δυνατό να περίμενες και τίποτε άλλο από
εμένα τον τόσο κακοπροαίρετο και αδύνατο, παρά
ξεπεσμό και γκρέμισμα».
Και ευχαρίστησέ τον και αγάπησέ τον περισσότερο παρά
ποτέ, θαυμάζοντας την τόσο μεγάλη ευσπλαχνία του, διότι
μολονότι λυπήθηκε από σένα, πάλι σου δίνει το δεξί του χέρι
και σε βοηθάει, για να μη ξαναπέσεις στην αμαρτία·
τελευταία, πες με μεγάλο θάρρος στη μεγάλη ευσπλαχνία
του: «Εσύ, Κύριέ μου, συγχώρησέ με και μην
επιτρέψεις στο εξής να ζω χωρισμένος από σένα, ούτε
να απομακρυνθώ ποτέ, ούτε να σε λυπήσω πλέον».
Και κάνοντας έτσι, μη σκεφτείς αν σε συγχώρεσε, διότι αυτό
δεν είναι τίποτε άλλο, παρά υπερηφάνεια, ενόχληση του νου,
χάσιμο του καιρού και απάτη του διαβόλου, χρωματισμένη με
διάφορες καλές προφάσεις. Γι’ αυτό, αφήνοντας τον εαυτό
σου ελεύθερο στα ελεήμονα χέρια του Θεού, ακολούθησε την
άσκησή σου, σαν να μην είχες πέσει.
Και αν συμβεί εξ’ αιτίας της αδυναμίας σου να αμαρτήσεις
πολλές φορές την ημέρα, κάνε αυτό που σου είπα όλες τις
φορές, όχι με μικρότερη ελπίδα στον Θεό. Και κατηγορώντας
περισσότερο τον εαυτό σου και μισώντας την αμαρτία
περισσότερο, αγωνίσου να ζεις με μεγαλύτερη προφύλαξη.
Αυτή η εκγύμναση δεν αρέσει στον διάβολο· γιατί βλέπει πως
αρέσει πολύ στον Θεό, επειδή και μένει ντροπιασμένος ο
αντίπαλος, βλέποντας ότι νικήθηκε από εκείνον, που αυτός
είχε πριν νικήσει. Γι’ αυτό και χρησιμοποιεί διαφορετικούς
τρόπους για να μας εμποδίσει, να μην το κάνουμε. Και πολλές
φορές πετυχαίνει το σκοπό του εξ’ αιτίας της αμέλειάς μας
και της μικρής φροντίδας που έχουμε στον εαυτό μας.[…]
Ο τρόπος λοιπόν, για να αποκτήσεις την ειρήνη, είναι ο εξής·
να ξεχάσεις τελείως την πτώση και την αμαρτία σου και να
παραδοθείς στη σκέψη της μεγάλης αγαθότητας του Θεού·
και ότι, αυτός μένει πολύ πρόθυμος και επιθυμεί να
συγχωρέσει κάθε αμαρτία, όσο και αν είναι βαριά,
προσκαλώντας τον αμαρτωλό με διάφορους τρόπους και
μέσα από διάφορους δρόμους, για να έλθει σε συναίσθηση
και να ενωθεί μαζί του σε αυτήν τη ζωή με την χάρι του· στην
δε άλλη να τον αγιάσει με τη δόξα του και να τον κάνει
αιώνια μακάριο. Κατόπιν, όταν έλθει η ώρα της
εξομολογήσεως, την οποία σε προτρέπω να κάνεις πολύ
συχνά, θυμήσου όλες σου τις αμαρτίες, και με νέο πόνο και
λύπη, φανέρωσέ τες όλες στον Πνευματικό σου και κάνε με
προθυμία τον κανόνα που θα σου ορίσει.

Against the Infringement
of Religious Liberty
by the
Department of Health
and Human Services
The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North
and Central America, which is comprised of the 65 canonical Orthodox bishops in the United States, Canada
and Mexico, join their voices with the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops and all those who adamantly protest the recent decision by the United States
Department of Health and Human Services, and call
upon all the Orthodox Christian faithful to contact their
elected representatives today to voice their concern in
the face of this threat to the sanctity of the Church’s
conscience.
In this ruling by HHS, religious hospitals, educational
institutions, and other organizations will be required to
pay for the full cost of contraceptives (including some
abortion-inducing drugs) and sterilizations for their employees, regardless of the religious convictions of the
employers.
The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees the free exercise of religion. This freedom is transgressed when a religious institution is required to pay
for “contraceptive services” including abortion-inducing
drugs and sterilization services that directly violate their
religious convictions. Providing such services should
not be regarded as mandated medical care. We, the
Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops, call upon
HHS Secretary Sebelius and the Obama Administration
to rescind this unjust ruling and to respect the religious
freedom guaranteed all Americans by the First Amendment.
